Re: (313) Metro Area Live- Detroit - January 24
Just to clarify: 1. Yes, Metro Area is playing in Detroit 2. They are NOT doing a live set. Anyone who has told you otherwise is misinformed 3. You should go. Because me and Gillespie will be holding it down that night as well. And to paraphrase the immortal words of Frank Zappa, I'd like to wish you all a very figgy bungus and a happy new year. rt -- Original Message -- From: "Pryor, Ryan N" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Wed, 25 Dec 2002 19:35:37 -0500 >City People Music presents: Heavy #2 w/Metro Area. >www.citypeoplemusic.com > > > > > > >

I've read quotes in the past from Dixon, one of Jazzanova's Sonar Kollektiv crew, that he really just wants to be Metro Area... (or words to that effect). Check some of his recent remixes for proof of that - the Wahoo mix of Jazzanova's "That Night" (on Dixon's latest mix CD Off Limits 3), and his contribution to the Fauna Flash remix album are both excellent productions. please- to set the record straight it's the _skin_flute. the kelley polar quartet is rocking the strings. and refuting claims of a laptop live set- yes, it is run by a laptop. but MA certainly isn't sitting down! the choice has to be made between portability/convenience or not doing shows at all. it's really studio-based musicwho is going to pay for the show plus transport and upkeep of live musicians? we're a bunch of animals! -zanfir Date: Wed, 1 May 2002 10:19:32 -0500 To: <313@hyperreal.org> From: "Matthew MacQueen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, "Dan Sicko" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RE: [313] Metro Area live Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > >There's also some live violin strings (Ana) > I thought that was someone else? RE: [313] Metro Area live
> Ok, got some Morgan Geist records, so I imagine it will be a very warm > sound than... Well Metro Area is that warm, but tends to be slower in tempo than Morgan's solo work, longer cuts, really "arranged" proper, the long sides of the 12"s have really long, varied percussion intros so they're great in the mix. The basslines are thick as your grandmothers turkey gravy. More live instrumentation and definitely a nod to electronic disco, but not in a cheesey way, in the electronic deep house groove way. Darshan is all about the NY classics and dance music history, so that sound comes through, but it's a really warm, funky combination that sounds like homage to the past, but not unabashedly retro -- there's futuristic and atmospheric sounds that make it still it's own kind of sound that has real techno/future elements. There's also some live violin strings (Ana) and on some tracks a pinch of funky guitar or trumpet (!)... but just a little (just the right amount IMHO). Was that metro area live ;) I was at the show as well and really dug what they played, if felt 'live' as well, and they were constantly doing something up there. -Original Message- From: Matthew MacQueen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, May 01, 2002 11:01 AM To: 313 Mailing List Cc: Jongsma, K.J. Their live set at that 7th City afterparty (Serenghetti Ballroom on Woodward, classic) was just spectacular, deep as hell. That Dan system rented so loud, but it was CLEAN with seemingly bottomless low end. Morgan and Darshan working the dials lock tight and people really got down, tripping through most of the Metro Area favorites. One of the deepeset and best executed live PAs of deep house/techno I've ever heard live, pure funk. Where else are they playing in Europe? I can't recommend them enough. Last year at the 7th city party (DEMF 2001) they played one of the best livesets i have ever heard. They are right up there together with Octave One/RNG and Inner City. If you are able to see them live, go thre you will enjoy it! trust me, i love MA - but dont they just perform with a laptop and keyboard controller? sitting down? (not that there's anything wrong with that at all!) its GREAT music but i definitely wouldnt put it up there with real all-out performances like inner city, rng, ur (strange comparisons..!). of course stupid me, i missed them live last year. there were some pictures of MA live in toronto at http://www.milkevents.com but i cant find them there now.. j _ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
