mmm, I got confused. it _is a collaboration song with holger
hiller on his
lp oben im eck and I should know cause I loved holger hiller too...

Ah...Holger...Dorau...and the band from which they sprang, Palais
Schuamberg - and to make it a bit more 313 relevant, didn't M. Von Oswald
play drums with them as well (also produced some of Mackenzie's
later stuff)?
Holger is another highly unsung hero of the period. Amazing stuff!!!

Probably via his Holger Hiller connection. The MacKenzie ep he produced was
Colours Will Come around 90-91.

Sorry, no British number one smashes for Associates -- they barely even hit
the Top Ten (once with Party Fears Two from early '82). Two others in the
Top 40: Club Country (mid-'82) and Love Hangover/18 Carat Love Affair (late
'82).

Some of the lyrics would help! If it was '82, it was probably Party Fears
Two or Club Country. If it was a bit later (say 1- 2 years) it might
have been Waiting for the Love Boat Those First Impressions or
Perhaps. If it was earlier it could have been White Car In Germany,
Kitchen Person, Q-Quarters...and that's not taking anything into
account from The Affectionate Punch (their 1st lp).

My frame of reference was more of what was making waves then in terms of
the UK music press and what my circle of friends (other music nerds)
commonly acknowledged as stellar during the period.

well, perhaps. but shortly before dying he released a solo LP

He did one called Beyond the Sun in 1997 on Nude records. Other than
Outernational and some eps (Colours Will Come - produced by M. Von
Oritz), I know of nothing entitled Whippets. If you have some more info
on this please forward it - I'd love to own it.

Mackenzie also did a collaboration with Paul Haig (there's another
one!) released not all that long ago on Paul's label.

what's the name of that label ? is he still releasing music ?!

The label is called Rol (Rhythm of Life) records and the collab (recorded
between '93-'95 and released in '99) is called Memory Palace. There's a
link to ROL as well as a complete discog here http://www.billymackenzie.com/
Apparently ROL has dug up some other eps which they have for sale also. I
know I had to order Memory Palace online via them. Not up to the old
Associates' standards imo, though.
Note also that WB is supposedly going to release the ultra-rare promo only
Glamour Chase.

Of course you know it's a pseudonym for Heaven 17 right? Recorded tracks
with Tina Turner long before her comeback (whihc they played a large part
in - Martyn Ware produced Let's Stay Together ... I believe they had 2
well recieved LPs (I seem to remember). Also did, I think These Boots Are
Made For Walking can't remember the vocalist - somebody arch, idiosyncratic
and Northern (they were from Sheffield.) One of those outfits you have in
the back of your mind to buy and then suddenly, you're 30 years old and
they've become an obscure early electronic outfit ... :o)

Slightly poppier than I'd like to hear, but I still think they were very

BEF was the production company or affilliation used/ran by Heaven 17 -
shortly after they split off from the original Human League, I believe. I'm

Allan Rankine will be most upset to hear of his untimely demise as he is
still alive and well and lecturing in Music Business at Stow College in my

spotted looking a bit grey on a Monday morning now and again when I was
