Re: [313] now Caberet + Detroit/ UR at DEMF
cabarets are private parties, not strip clibs, usually in a hall, like a low rent version of a private club. suually very dressy and with themes, thrown by various party promoter crews, like in Detroit, DJ Polo. in fact, aux's dj dijital makes a living playing them (and skating rinks). power to the people. RE: [313] now Caberet + Detroit/ UR at DEMF
I think Sean nailed the definition on the head a few posts ago. Cabarets are popular among the older crowd in Detroit. Rather than having to spend their Friday and Saturday nights dancing with 18 year old kids at the club, they rent out spaces throughout the city and create their own party. Like Sean said getting all dressed up and B.Y.O.B'n it. Dancing all night long to old school and house, and most recently booty. So, UR having their own cabaret doesnt seem that far fetched, they are just providing a place for the "older crowd" ( not necessarily age-wise, but maybe widsom-wise, i.e. not raver kids) to do their thing Friday night. Re: [313] now Caberet + Detroit/ UR at DEMF
I've always thought a Caberet, in the Detroit tense, was an all night party at a rental hall that doesnt have a license to sell liquor, so they get around this by other means. Usually charging a huge cover and "giving away" the booze or having patrons "B.Y.O.B" (bring your own bottle). It was a given that everyone would be extremely dressed up for these events. The term "ghettofabulous" comes to mind :^) sean Fred Heutte wrote: > I'll let the Detroiters set it straight, but as I understand it, > cabarets evolved out of speakeasies after Prohibition. RE: [313] now Caberet + Detroit/ UR at DEMF
It just means a dance party...or a party where dancing is the main focus. So UR doing a cabaret should not be surreal but great. It will give the out of towners and others a chance to see a different part of Detroit as well which is a good thing. Cabaret, as I'm sure any 212 313er will tell you, is an evil word in NYC. The lack of a cabaret license was used by the Giulani administration to shut down bars if the patrons were found dancing in the establishment. These licenses were more difficult to acquire than liquor licenses. Crazy.. Re: [313] now Caberet + Detroit/ UR at DEMF
I'll let the Detroiters set it straight, but as I understand it, cabarets evolved out of speakeasies after Prohibition. When alcohol was legalized again, they went legit but kept up the jazz band tradition that had grown up in that environment. As the decades have gone on, eventually DJs supplemented the bands. I gather a cabaret these days *could* mean a strip club, but not exclusively. http://detnews.com/2001/entertainment/0109/30/c01-304935.htm http://www.ipl.org/exhibit/detjazz/Stompin.html http://www.lilytomlin.com/reviews/time_mag_1977.htm http://www.submerge.com/electrofunkjoinssubmerge.htm By the way, nightclub laws are often known as "cabaret laws," and not just in Detroit: http://www.mml.org/pdf/detadul.pdf - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
