What name does he use for his garage stuff? I'd be interested to hear
some...

The new Fat Cat 12" is great - I've been mixing the B1 pitched down with
some broken beat stuff and it sounds awesome...

Cheers,

2002-01-28 Thread Toby Frith
Grain, who features on the DE 909 mix cd, is a garage producer by trade. He
also goes under the monikers of Santos Rodriguez and Morgan Reno... in fact
the latest Grain single is very "speed garage" influenced - but still full
of that rhythmic force that defines techno.

MJ Cole is pretty ace. Did you hear "Attitude" last year? You're right about
the Detroit/Chicago being in there, but then that's not surprising, given
he's a former Drum & Bass head, turned Garage producer which I know
someone around these parts finds to be the worst of all worlds ... :o).
Incidentally, have you heard the As One album? There is a track on there
called 'Contours' which sounds suspsiciously like Speed Garage!... But more
like the MJ Cole style of Garage ... I used to be quite blanket negative on
that scene, but as it matures, I'm very reluctant to just dismiss it
wholesale ... I keep hearing stuff in it that I find subtle, soulful and
deep ...

influence in his material and Wookie's album was nice, cool Stevie Wonder
influence in parts and with one track kinda Hawtin-esque strange
techno-meets-two-step track. Gotta say just played So Solid album and am

seems like youre a bit narrow minded bout that,,,drum n bass
is music in deed, you might not like itz but you really cant say that
there are only some producers that cut it,,,you should really go and look
how people like optical, ed rush or bad company have pushed music
and also mastering,,,just have a listen to some of their plates
on your system and then play some of your own records,,,you will
see what i talk about
another tihng,,,you should go to a garage/2.step,,anyway called party
and enjoy it,,,dont say its all crap,,be a bit more open-minded and
enjoy music..

Re: [313] string 'n' pad

2002-01-25 Thread Ron
hey alex...
youre from the uk so you really should know it ,,,
seems like youre a bit narrow minded bout that,,,drum n bass
is music in deed, you might not like itz but you really cant say that
there are only some producers that cut it,,,you should really go and look
how people like optical, ed rush or bad company have pushed music
and also mastering,,,just have a listen to some of their plates
on your system and then play some of your own records,,,you will
see what i talk about
another tihng,,,you should go to a garage/2.step,,anyway called party
and enjoy it,,,dont say its all crap,,be a bit more open-minded and
enjoy music..
thats what i mean..

No offense, Alex, but it sounds like you have more of a hatred for the people
and not the music...

Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

Point taken Ken,

Sorry, just was on a bit of a rant. Of course people should come here
ignorant, it's a good resource for people.

I just can't stand a lot of that sort of music - the boundaries between
that and techno, I admit ,are blurred.
It's a lot of the jokers associated with that sort of music that I have a
pet hate for as well (of course, NOT ALL of them).

For the record I hate Student, Puffa-Jacket wearing wanna-be bad boys as
well (You know the sort, were dead into rave/happy hardcore, then found
some 'credibility' with 'Jungle' and now are speed garage
producers/know-it-alls)

RE: [313] string 'n' pad

2002-01-25 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Careful about asking 'Is it music?' almost any dance music afficionada has
to ask themselves the same question in a dark night of the soul ... But for
me personally, it IS music. Perhaps a new kind of music which takes the
aesthetic principles of modern art and applies them to sound - CF: The Art
of Noise (the name itself is a kind of manifesto, non?). Their early records
could be seen as early techno, in which the potentional of Kraftwerk, Devo,
etc were finally fused into as much a new way of appreciating sound as a new
kind of music(That's my stock answer to 'Is it Music' anyway!).

Also, I'm happy for people to come here ignorant - to educate on modern
detroit dance music is what the site's meant to do, after all.

Finally, sorry for preaching to those who know more than me. Peace.
