 so any suggestions for good fusion jazz/rock with enough funk in it to
keep
 it steering clear of smooth jazz?

you could also check out pat metheny, tracks like:-

proof
tears inside
full circle
red sky
third wind

some of it is a bit weird though.

i'm getting in to some really driving modern post bop jazz. so any
suggestions there would be good.
