Re: (313) My take on Yussel

2004-05-01 Thread Phonopsia
This whole argument is moot. I've seen Mills spin like six times in the last
year and a half, and he certainly hasn't played the same set every time, or
anything even close. The only commonality has been that he's played lots of
his own material, and lots of those tracks are similar set-to-set. Fair
play, it's his music. If he played the same set while on one tour, that's
one thing (and understandable for reasons already cited), but tour-to-tour
it just doesn't hold water. Late last year he played Fabric and was throwing
in house and disco, as he was when he played The End earlier that Autumn. It
was different stuff each time as well. Since then I haven't heard him do
that as much, but each set has still been substantially different. Perhaps
this argument held water a few years ago - I don't know. It certainly
doesn't now though. Reading tracklists of online mixes does not equate to
seeing him perform regularly first-hand.

i kinda agree about the limitations of your set when you're a dj on tour but
it's not as bad as what you guys are saying. a record crate holds a lot of
records, enough for 3 completely different sets at least, mix and match and
you have i dunno 6 or 7 pretty different sets.

also a fun thing to do is go record shopping before your gig if you have
time, en play those records that night. guess you gotta have room to carry
them to your next gig tho. i was recently in atlanta for a show and me and
the other guys i was with hit a recordstore beforehand and found a bunch of
dancemania and trax for $1 each. that stuff was almost all that got played
that night...fun...guess you don't do that so much when you're a bigshot
with a big paycheck tho and people are paying $25 to get in or whatever, but
i dont think that applies to most dj's or most occasions..whatever...

i dont know, im just saying that it seems like most deejays who
tour can only bring along so many records at once. i mean i guess
you could go home and repack your records after every gig but i
bet the people paying your flight shares might be unhappy. it also
seems like theres a pretty high pressure on deejays to play things
people know. so i wouldnt say that they play exactly the same set,
but i bet it gets pretty repititious after a while. i mean why do
you really need to play different records if people arent going to
like them? theres a finite number of records to play, and only a
very small percentage of them is going to fall into the kind of
music you want to play, and an even smaller number are going to be
the ones to really get a reaction out of a crowd. i can think of
many records that i own that i love that i would probably never
play at a gig unless it was like a lounge type atmosphere where
getting people to dance wasnt the primary concern. i like playing
different settings so i can play different kinds of records in
different ways. i imagine jeff mills isnt getting asked to play
the chill room too often.

Ok everyone, this statement is obviously another attempt by Yussel to
force us into giving him our collective attention. So lets all fill
each others mailboxes with the obvious refutes to this terribly over
simplified and unjust statement and give our little drama prince the
attention he deserves.
