Re: Techno 2017

2018-01-04 Thread Sjoerd
Fellow Hyperrealers,

I sent you a telegram yesterday, but it was grossly incomplete. 2017 has
been a wonderful year for music. I've mostly been exploring electronic &
experimental landscapes, so don't know how well this matches with the
detroit crowd. In my opinion though, anyone who has the set of ears to
listen to detroit techno, has the set of ears to appreciate music from all
the walks of life.

*Versalife - Soul of the Automaton part 1. *
Genre: Techno/Electro.
Label: Transcendent
Release date: October 29th, 2017
Short review: This 4-track EP from Rotterdam based producer Boris Bunnink
(aka Conforce) is a true jewel. Distress call from Pasadena is a soft track
which to me is reminiscent of Andreaen Sand Dunes, while the undertones of
danger in Versalife's track are more present. This manifests itself in 3
killer electro tracks, where mind control is the slayer, QU/AD the space
drifter and Chaos Quasar that one track at 04:30 that sends you beyond the
star.

*VA - #002 *
Genre: Future Techno/Robot Groove
Label: Progressive Future
Release date: 17th july, 2017
Short review: I am raving about this label. Has got UR written all over it.
A fantastic showcase of the raw, Ukranian talent. 7 tracks which range from
Vocoder electro, Bass heavy electro pumpers, interdimensional plutonium
tracks (Альф пропал) and even some Jazzy home electro. Big fan. Will keep
my eye out on this label. https://progressive-future.bandcamp.com/album/002

*Aleksi Perälä - Simulation*
Genre: Techno
Label: Clone Basement Series.
https://clonebasementseries.bandcamp.com/album/simulation
Release Date: August 25, 2017
Short review: If you aren't aware of it yet, some of Rephlex's (RIP) finest
started exploring new sound ventures around 3 years ago, which they call
the Colundi melodies. Basically, a note is a frequency and most western
contemporary music follows the standard A,B,C,D,E,F,G ladder, which is set
(i.e. an A# will always have a frequency of 1437 hz). This means that music
is made within a set range of frequencies. This is boring and also limiting
to humans. Colundi melodies try and explore harmonies between the set
frequencies. The results are quite spectacular.

*Danny Wolfers - Unfolding the Future with Amateur Space Jazz*Genre:
Amateur Space Jazz
Label: Legowelt self-released
Release date: April, 2017
Short review: Fun and adventurous, perfect for any day to chill to.
Inspires me to make music.

*UR Skully*
Genre: Streetwear
Label: Underground Resistance
Release date: Last february
Short review: Keeps my head warm and apparel tight.

These were some of my personal highlights of 2017.
All the best to you and Detroit in 2018!!

Most of my good shit this year was all re-issues of older stuff, and I
somehow skipped most of the club oriented material and got a lot of
soundscape/ambient/mood type of business. Pregnant wife and new babies
meant not a lot of time for being out...

I'll second the Vatican Shadow; for my money just about everything Dominick
Fernow and the entire Hospital Productions label touch has been gold for
me, if usually a bit // wrists 'im dark and moody every day all day drone
noise' for some tastes. I'd strongly recommend any of his 'Rainforest
Spiritual Enslavement' releases as well if you are more into the more
soundscape side of things.

Some of my favs this year:
Deathprod - Treetop Drive (finally pressed)
Vatican Shadow - Luxor Necropolitics
Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement - bunch of reissues
Sarah Davachi - All My Circles Run
Akira Rabelais - Spellewauerynsherde
Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe - Levitation Praxis Pt 4
Midori Takada ‎– Through The Looking Glass (Finally got repressed!)

-Arturo

BTW we are getting the mix site back into production mode so if anyone out
there looking to work with us and share/make some mixes for new episodes
drop me a line! http://www.art-and-artifice.com/
