Re: Is there a 4D View User Manual?

2016-10-12 Thread Chris Patterson
Hi Bill,

Yes, there is a 4D View User Manual, I have a PDF one that I appear to have
downloaded as part of 4D v14.
However, it does not seem to have been updated since 4D 2004!
Both the v14 and v2004 copies I have are 186 pages and Copyright 2005.
I just checked the 4D DocCenter and it is not there.
They must have it, but I am not sure how one accesses the archives.

Hope this helps.

Yup, Alt-double click is the standard Windows shortcut. No question -

Spencer,
Thanks for the tips. That's kinda my point though - I don't want to have to
muck around with configuring variables for button icons. Plus I keep
striving for forms that look and behave the same on Mac, Windoz and web

Re: How to resize PNG images for button icons

2016-10-12 Thread Spencer Hinsdale
Hi Kirk,

You can scale the image used in a 3-D Button by using a Variable and Transform
Picture. This works well and works for Retina.

We used Picture Buttons previously and also with a Variable in order to support
background, mask, and multi-state.

3-D Buttons handle these automatically and with OS-specific flare. Here's a
visual:
https://www.bigbusiness.com/solutions/6453

same buttons with different icons and different Set Format "Styles" have
different background, highlight, bevel, offset...automatically.

For command documentation and opening a method, option-click works as well. I
am assuming alt-click works the same on a PC. I find this easier and quicker

Easy Key Combination to Open the Explorer

2016-10-12 Thread Douglas von Roeder
This could be old news but I discovered this late yesterday -

In 4D's method editor, Ctrl-k is the keyboard shortcut for "Goto
definition" for the item that's highlighted. If a 4D command is
highlighted, pressing Ctrl-k will open the documentation web page for that
command. If it's a method that's highlighted, 4D will open that method.

In contrast to the simplicity of "Goto definition", the keyboard "shortcut"
for opening the Explorer is Ctrl+Shift+Alt+e which requires some dexterity
compared to a simple Ctrl-k. Further, working on different system
configurations means that some key commands are different - 4D
2004+Parallels+Win7 uses different commands from V13+Parallels+Win7 which
are, in turn, different from a V15 app accessed via Citrix on the Mac to
Citrix on Win 2008 Server

There *is* a very easy way to open the Explorer using Ctrl-k - place the
insertion point on an empty row of text in the method editor, press Ctrl-k,
and 4D opens the Explorer.

Re: How to resize PNG images for button icons

2016-10-12 Thread Kirk Brooks
Sujit,
I use those multi-image files for buttons sometimes. They are nice for but
require a complicated setup. I mean, you have to generate those very
specific image files with the multiple versions of the base image. That's a
lot of prep to set it up and change later on. Evidence the fact 4D hasn't
changed their default button images in years now.

A few years ago I started using a set of icon images for buttons. It looks
nice and gives my apps a cohesive look. That set came with a series of
sizes (18x18, 24x24, 32x32, 64x64, 128x128). Those different sizes allow me
to use them in bevel style 3D buttons and as icons on hLists. It's a bit of
waste, though, having the full set (about 125) of each image in each size
in the Resources folder. Recently I've been working with a icon set (~300
images) drawn at one size (512x512 in this case) and sizing them down.

Who needs ~300 images for icons? It's true I use a fraction of them but
it's nice to have lots of stylistically similar choices available to work
with. It allows better consistency in building the user interface.

Picture buttons do this nicely. But there are some limitations; the border
choices aren't good and you can't include a text label, for instance. 3D
buttons offer better configurability as an interface object but the linked
image won't scale.

I think it would be nice if there was basically 1 button object that you
can configure as necessary. Sort of like a javascript button where the
button functions and the display attributes are separate.

Re: 4D v12.5 and Mac Sierra

2016-10-12 Thread Jim Hays
FWIW, v12.5 has had random "the application has unexpectedly quit" errors
during development with El Capitan and still with Sierra. It usually
happens when saving a Method. Often, the application does NOT actually
quit though!
I've just upgraded to Sierra, and when typing in 4D dialogs, the cursor
appears to be a few "spaces" to the right of what I'm typing. This is on a
Retina iMac, so may be display related.

We have very few customers using Macs, so not a big issue. We're also
moving to v15 or 16 as soon as we can get there.

HTH,

Jim

Hi Arnaud

Yes, thats what I found also.

The IMPORT STRUCTURE command that Miyako recommended is great - it does the
whole lot with high fidelity. Even gets the table colours right. The only
problem I had is that I always get an error message at the end, saying
something like “incompatible definition”, even though it seems to import
everything perfectly. I didn’t investigate further but I’m going to use that
option later so will return to it.

To me, SQL is really a runtime, not design time tool and I prefer not to use it
when 4D has all these design-time specific options that are native. For
example, one huge benefit of the pasteboard approach is that you can start a
table off with a few basic fields. Then organise another 100 or so fields in a
spreadsheet, evolving the names, fieldgroups and types till it’s perfect, then
just paste them straight into the table (after parsing the pasteboard contents
with the XML conversion). That is an extremely powerful design technique for
front-loading a lot of the structure and business logic thinking into the
analysis phase IMO.

Peter

4D Chart for 4Dv15

2016-10-12 Thread Miguel Gonzalez
Hi All,

Does anyone know if there is a plugin or component of 4D Chart for 4Dv15?

I'll appreciate any comment.

Thank you in advance.

Re: Data Dictionary to Structure via XML ?

Miyako -

Your answer gave me the confidence to go back and look harder at the solution.
Turns out 4D had a problem with the formatting in the document header: . I had version=“1” instead of version=“1.0”
and that was enough to break it.

Another thing - I couldn’t find any documentation at all for the “type”
attribute (which doesn’t correspond to 4D’s data type constants). Even the DTD
doesn’t decode them so I just copied each field type in turn and inspected 4D’s
XML dump to build a mapping table. (Listed below in case they’re useful to
anyone else).

Everything works great now and I can lift a structure definition straight from
a spreadsheet data dictionary, paste into an empty table and **kerboom**. Table
implemented !

Yes - SQL could have been possible. I don’t like using SQL for making permanent
structure changes though, ever since I noticed that relations made with SQL are
somehow “different” from ones made in the structure editor. I think the XML is
more native to 4D.

Thanks for the responses !

Peter

Why not SQL instead?

Re: How to resize PNG images for button icons

2016-10-12 Thread Sujit Shah
I had to create a new button and forgot about the toolbar button type. All
you need is to create a 4row x 1 col image for the normal, mouse over,
clicked and disabled states and 4D does the rest very cool
