I found Renamer from http://incrediblebee.com to be
very useful.

Price was right… able to use it on the fly. Good experience. Did exactly what
I needed.

Might be useful inside a 4D app.

That's a huge subject, and there are services out there for it. A couple of
quick links if you want to start from scratch:

https://support.twilio.com/hc/en-us/articles/223183008-Formatting-International-Phone-Numbers
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_conventions_for_writing_telephone_numbers

Note that local custom varies. For example, Australia has two digit area
codes, like 02, 03, 04 and so on. But 04 is special...all mobile phones
start with 04. Land lines are normally written like this:

02 3456 7899

Mobiles are normally (but not invariably) written like this:

0434 567 899

So, 2-4-4 versus 4-3-3.Or not.

Re: Triggers and modified by fields in roll-your-own user

2017-07-05 Thread Kirk Brooks via 4D_Tech
Chuck,
Always an option. But managing IP arrays require local semaphores to manage
read/write. On a local machine that's not too bad but on a busy server it
could get to be a noticeable issue where you could conceivably have dozens
if not hundreds of records being affected in a very close period of time.
I'm thinking about several users importing records or executing some method
that loops through a bunch of records.

Plus I'm really trying to get away from IP vars as much as possible.

In the original db the best solution has worked out to be my initial idea:
I split out the updating of the date & user fields and run that within the
Save Record wrapper. I tend to prefer triggers for this sort of thing
because it catches changes due to stuff like importing, apply to selection,
etc. Save Record is great for While Loops and user inputs but not so much
those other cases.

It's actually this sort of stuff, custom user info not being readily
available, that lead me to work out syncing my user accounts with 4D users.
It's a whole 'nuther level of complexity but lets me get out of the
password and logon management business along with solid user identification
in any native 4D situation. I'm not necessarily promoting that as a
solution - just saying it's working for me in one installation.

Re: Corrupted index and likely record - which Record(s)

2017-07-05 Thread Chip Scheide via 4D_Tech
it would seem to me that the problem is not the data file, rather the
structure.

because:

if the data file9s) in backup were not open(assumed), and they used to
open correctly... then regardless of what tools is saying maybe the
damage is actually in the structure, as it would have been open when
the power failure bit it.

I would try repairing and compacting the structure to see if that
resolves the issue.

Corrupted index and likely record - which Record(s)

2017-07-05 Thread Jody Bevan via 4D_Tech
I think the terrible power where I live got my data file. It has been corrupted
in a way that crashes the application 100% of the time. I have gone to backups,
but even old backups seem to have the same problem - strange they ran fine for
months.

Deleting the Index file and recreating does not resolve the issue.
Repairing the file does not resolve the issue, and in fact 10 errors are
reported.

The index pages on Index 105 on Preference.Object_Prefs has the errors.
Problem on page #2 in Index 105 on Preferences.Object_Prefs index: Subpagage
reference is invalid (24;212) in 9 out 10 case.

Fortunately this is all data I created initially via code so with a few hours
work I could write a nice little method to rewrite it all (after deleting it,
and then just modify as I need to. A pain - a lots day’s worth of work likely
(but easier next time).

What would be really nice is if I can know what records are causing the
problem. Deleting and recreating (say 10 records) would be far easier to get
back to the state I want them in.

Maybe this is also a sign to move from our custom built Object Tool, to the
16R4 Preview Object tools… It is not a production system right now, an under
development shell. We will want to move it to the production version anyway at
some point. I do really like what Adam wrote for us though.

Anyway. Any ideas?

You can simply check field length for phone. I would assume it had something to
do with data inconsistency. perhaps insert length too long, or blank for a non

Re: SQL

2017-07-05 Thread Robert McKeever via 4D_Tech
The site is running v11, and communicates with the other system by SQL. Been
working this way for over 5 years.

All SQL activity happens on a Mac Server via the triggers.

The error:

SQL Error 9900
USE Medflow; UPDATE [dbo].[MF_DOCTORS] SET [DOCTOR_NAME] = 'Grada, Atel ',
[DOCTOR_ADDRESS1] = 'Po Box 2005', [DOCTOR_ADDRESS2] = '', [DOCTOR_CITY] =
'Corner Brook', [DOCTOR_STATE] = 'NL', [DOCTOR_ZIP] = 'A2H 6J7', [DOCTOR_PHONE]
= ' 709 637-5000 ext 5524', [DOCTOR_TYPE] = '', [DOCTOR_PRINT_NAME] = 'Atel
Grada, MD', [DOCTOR_FAXNO] = ' 709 637-5124', [DOCTOR_EMAIL] = '',
[DOCTOR_SPECIALTY] = '', [STATUS] = 'A'  WHERE [DOCTOR_CODE] = '10289’;

I’m wondering if it is the phone number with ‘ext’ in it.

I’ll login later tonight and remove it and see what happens.

another field with the User connection ID. From then on, you just load this
record in the On server open connection (you know the User connection ID)

I am looking for ideas/code for text utilities that you might be using.

Areas I have covered:
- Conversion to/from text
- Counting Occurrences of a character(string)
- parsing a text (Start on the left, or on the right)
- capitalization
- text matching
- padding/fill
- stripping from either end
- removing characters from anywhere
- unique characters in a text
- random text generation with weighting options)

Things I know I need :
- Phone # formatting, to include various (non-US) formats -- most of
which I do not know

Anything, ideas or outlines, or actual code, you might have that I
haven't thought of, or that you think might be 'the most efficient'

Thanks
Chip

Re: SQL

2017-07-05 Thread Pat Bensky via 4D_Tech
Robert,
I remember seeing that when I was working on a SQL project a while back,
but can't remember the details :) If you can describe what you are doing
when you get the error, perhaps that will jog my memory ...
