I have VirtualBox 4.2.6_OSE r82870. I assume the OSE is OpenSuSE Edition.
I think I can get some help installing an older version(4.1.24) on the
OpenSuse forums.
Thanks all.

I read in the plan9 google groups archive that plan9-20120703.iso was
known to work with vbox... I thought at the time I had the right version of
vbox, but the minor version number may have been different. I also wasn't
aware that qemu could work with out the support from the proc. Is that
version dependent also, or only on a Microsquish OS version of qemu?

Cheers,
Terry.

I've never been able to get plan9, 9atom, or 9front to install under
virtualbox. I've had to install plan9 on a dual-boot machine, which
sucks. I can't use qemu or the linux kvm with my proc, it doesn't do
virtualization. I'd really like to get one of the above to work with
virtualbox. Just my two cent's.

[9fans] Newbie questions

2013-09-17 Thread Terry Wendt
After installing plan9 I managed to delete the plan9.ini file. I also made
a mistake while installing, I chose to let plan9 have all the free space
remaining - about 25Gig.

This machine has winxp on the first partition and I'd like to install grub2
as a boot loader to choose between winxp, plan9, and a varying flavor of
linux or bsd.

Query 1: Will plan9 play nice with grub2?

Query 2: Can I "safely" use gparted on the plan9 partition and shrink it
down, or will it complain, vomit, and generally refuse to be budged?

Query 3: Should I just reinstall plan9, fixing the partition problem and
the plan9.ini problem? I'll learn less that way, but then again I can
install 9atom instead...

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Terry.

Re: [9fans] How useful is a scroll wheel?

My vote would be for the scroll wheel. I don't like to reach for the
mouse if I don't have to, but when you're already using the mouse the
scroll wheel is extremely handy. Also, just because the mouse has a
scroll wheel it doesn't mean you have to use it. And of course the
wheel doubles as a middle button, so no loss of functionality. Just
my two cents.

[9fans] Install Advice Requested.

2013-06-30 Thread Terry Wendt
tlaronde - Thank you for the abstract you sent. It sent me to the
manual pages, which is almost always a good thing. In the prep(8)
online manual page, I found the following listed as a bug:

"If prep –p doesn't find a Plan 9 partition table, it will emit
commands to delete all extant partitions. Similarly, fdisk –p will
delete all partitions, including data, if there are no partitions
defined in the MBR."

Could this be what has been whacking my extended partitions?

Anyway, I'm going to do a lot more reading before a third attempt at
installing. I want to make sure everything is ready before jumping in
again.

Thanks,
Terry.

Re: [9fans] Install Advice requested

2013-06-29 Thread Terry Wendt
I'm a glutton for pain. First, it wasn't the plan9.iso, but the
9athom.iso. I think the original problem occured by
exiting(Ctrl+Alt+Del) before the install was done. I guess I should
have used Ctrl-d to stop the process I was in. Anyway, after exiting
the install program and rebooting I discovered that 3 of my partitions
got whacked. I used a live knoppix disc to boot up, get online and
get a tool to repair the borked partitions(testdisk). Well, that
worked well. Next, used my openSuS rescue dvd to reinstall grub2, and
got everything back up.

I copied the plan9.iso over to the plan9 partition, and even copied
all the files and directories as well. Remember though, I actually
was installing from the 9atom.iso... genius. I finally figured out
how to setup grub2 for plan 9. Then I kept getting the same error
over and over trying to boot into that partition: "error: invalid
signature". Went into fdisk and toggled the partition TYPE flag to
0x39, done. At this point, I could boot from grub2 into plan9, but of
course the install wasn't complete.

This is where the pain begins again.

Insert 9atom.iso. Reboot. The install picked up where it left off.
Got all the to [copydist]. It was in the middle of this that it ran
out of room! Oh yeah, that copy of plan9.iso sitting there and it was
only a 1.1GB partition. Control-D my way out, go back into openSuSE
and try to go into the plan9 partition to delete the iso file - nope,
that wasn't gonna happen, there were only 3 or 4 files there??? I
guess the rest of the filesystem couldn't be seen... ok, no problem.
Delete the partition, double the size to 2.2GB. Reboot using the
9atom.iso, and start the install. Now, for some reason, 9atom doesn't
like the partition? Do I control-d my way out I ask? Of course not -
control-alt-delete. Reboot. Grub can't find a bootable partition...
Yep, whacked my system again. The real strange thing is its all the
linux partitions on the extend partition? Very strange.

So here I am again in knoppix, doing it all over again. But I must
admit, I learn a lot via these sessions of self-abuse. 8^0

It would be nice if it wouldn't do that by exiting the install in a
way it doesn't like. Maybe it could intercept that trio of
keys(control-alt-del) and produce the control-d itself??

Ok, wish me luck, I'm going in.
Terry.

[9fans] Install Advice requested

I created a partition and started the plan9 install using plan9.iso.
It was an incomplete install, and I had some other problems from which
I've recovered. 8^)

I created a directory on the plan9 partition named iso, then copied
plan9.iso to that dir.

Can anyone provide some guidance regarding completing the install
without allowing plan9 to mark its partition as the boot partition?

Once the install is complete, if I need to reinstall grub2 I know how
now. What do I tell grub2 to point to on the plan9 partition to add
it to my grub2 menu? And can anyone recommend any boot options I may
need to set?

Thank you in advance,

Re: [9fans] plan9 iso image cont.

2013-06-29 Thread Terry Wendt
When I tried booting 9front, it didn't give me any options until it
got to the bootargs line, where it froze.
I'll get back to 9front later. I am interested, but my system is
completly borked right now.

When I had tried the vanilla plan9.iso, I was trying the "boot from
cd" option, and it was freezing right away. So... I figured I had two
primary partitions unused, one of which I planned to install plan9 to
anyway, why not see if the "install to hard drive" option would work?
My everyday system is openSuSE 12.3 as such:

/dev/sda1 - fat16 - A fat partition containing Dell stuff.
/dev/sda2 - ext2 - Set aside for plan9.
/dev/sda3 - ext2 - Empty.
/dev/sda4 - The extended part.
/dev/sda5 - linux-swap
/dev/sda6 - ext3 - An old, unused distro, has a lot of backup files I
need to save.
/dev/sda7 - (was ext4) - '/' my system partition.
/dev/sda8 - (was ext4) - '/home'
/dev/sda9 - (was ext3) - '/music'
 - - - - - - - 89.35 GiB unallocated

You'll note the three partitions that say "was ext4" or "ext3"!!
Also, I was using grub2 as the boot loader. You'll note again the use
of "was".

Prior to openSuSE 12.3, I'd never used grub2. I can swear there is a
way to use grub2 to install a new system. Grub2 was not installed to
the mbr, but actually on the extended part. Maybe it actually uses
the mbr to point to it's location on the extended part, I'm not sure.
Also, the / and /home parts were/are ext4.

I figured, "what the heck" I'll try the install of plan9, and if it
whacks grub2, so be it. I'll reinstall grub2, and all will be good.

The install to hard drive option seemed to work great. Until I got to
the "mountdist" portion. It didn't seem to want to use
/dev/sdD0/data. I figured I'd point it at the plan9.iso image on
/dev/sda8/ partition. Due to the unfamiliar naming scheme, I wasn't
positive which partition I wanted, so I tried LINUX4, LINUX5, and
LINUX6. The install program told me they were all empty. No problem,
I thought, I'll go back to openSuSE and move a copy of plan9.iso to
/dev/sda3 and while I'm at it copy the contents out of the iso image
to /dev/sda3 as well.

Reboot.

No bootable partitions... uh oh. Ok, no problem, I'll reinstall
grub2. Two hours go by. Can't figure out how to reinstall grub2.
Alright, guess I'll have to reinstall openSuSE. Oh no! The DVD is
slightly damaged, the so called rescue portion boots, but there are
about 50 errors trying to install... give up for the night.

This is great stuff, right? lol.

This morning I break out my trusty knoppix 5.3.1 dvd. Boot up.
Connect to the net, and here I am. Too bad knoppix 5.3.1 does not
speak ext4. Darn.

So, my mission for today(or this weekend) is to recover the three
whacked partitions, recover grub2, then figure out the best way to
complete the plan9 install and get grub2 to play nice with plan9.

Also, I'd planned to add a cd drive to this mach, but I had forgotten
that it's sata and all the cd or dvd drives I have are ata. Curses!
Foiled again!!

Terry.

[9fans] plan9 iso image cont.

2013-06-28 Thread Terry Wendt
K3b actually said 721.7 GB. As in Gigabytes.

So, I've downloaded, burned, and tried to install the following iso images:

9front-2688.28a9914426a3.iso (I used Brasero to burn the cd, no size complaints)
+9atom.iso
9atom.iso
9atom.nboot.iso
plan9.iso

None actually booted, but some got farther then others.

Results:

plan9.iso - "PBSR...EI" < as far as it got and froze
9atom.nboot.iso - circular reboot
+9atom.iso - circular reboot
9atom.iso - booted from cd, got to choose option 2(boot from cd),
these are the last few lines:

ehci 0xe0001000: port3 didn't reset within 500ms; status 0x1101
ehci 0xe0001000: port4 didn't reset within 500ms; status 0x1101
usb/kb... usb/kb... root is from(il, tcp, local)[local!#S/sdD0/data]:
cpu0: spurious interupt 39, last 11

I hit enter after about 3 minutes of no action...
kfs...version...time...
init: starting /bin/rc

Nothing else ever happened, even after lots of key-presses.

9front.iso - never gave me an option to run from cd or install, it
just started launching itself.
Several screens of info and it stop on this line:
bootargs is (tcp, il, local!device)[local!dev/sdD0/data] _

Thank you for your response erik. The machine I'm trying to boot this
on is an "old" dell inspiron 530.

Processor - Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2140 @ 1.60 GHz
Ram - 1 GB

I just thought of something... The HD is on the primary cable, and a
DVD and CD are on the secondary. The DVD drive is the device setup as
a boot device in the BIOS. Anything? Not really, right?

Can I use any of the 9atom images on this PC? Are they only for
install, or can I use them as live CDs?
I'm downloading:
http://ftp.9atom.org/other/9atom.iso.bz2
http://ftp.9atom.org/other/9atom.nboot.iso.bz2
http://ftp.9atom.org/other/+9atom.nboot.iso.bz2

You included 2 links to that last one. I'll try burning one of each of
these and let you know how the process goes. I might not get back to
you until later... but I will get back. If you meant to include a
forth link, resend and I'll grab a copy of that and do the same.

I've downloaded the plan9.iso image twice from
http://plan9.bell-labs.com/plan9/download.html

Once about two weeks ago, once today. Both times I extracted the
plan9.iso.bz2 file to plan9.iso. Both times I burned the image to a
cd, and both times the program(k3b) told me the image wasn't the same
size as the header suggests??

Upon trying to boot off the cd I get this:

boot from cd :
PBSR...EI

I've waited, nothing else happens
I hit enter, and my machine reboots back to the above "boot from cd : " message.

Any ideas? Different download site? Any advice?
Thanks in advance,
