RE: [EXTERNAL] Re: [9fans] Jim McKie

2020-06-25 Thread Williams , Mitch via 9fans
I had the privilege of interacting with Jim on many occasions in the company of
Ron Minnich while work was done to port Plan 9 to some of our minicluster
machines which came into existence during the years 2001-2013. Jim was a funny
guy, and I always knew I was in the company of Great Minds on those trips. God
Bless & rest in peace.

I feel privileged to have met Jim and to have learned from him in person and
from the work he left us. His passing is a great loss to 9fans and all those
who had the chance to meet him. My deepest condolences to his family and
friends.

The first time I met Jim was at a (mostly) 9fans event one evening during
Supercomputing in 2005. The second time was enroute to Madrid for IWP9 2006.
On that occasion, out of nervousness and fandom and to the point of annoyance,
I talked and asked him questions incessantly. He was very patient with me. I
had hoped that we might convince him to attend the next IWP9. He will be
missed.

I've attached a picture from the SC|05 meetup at Pike Place Brewery. I believe
Audrey (nee Andrey :) ) took the picture.

Damn. Condolences to his nearest & dearest.

My favourite jmk-ism was when he described C++ as "the flavour of the
weak" within a certain organisation.

Another random memory:
he re-used the V6 kernel initialisation code as clist blocks for the tty
driver to eke out the limited kernel address space on non-sep-I PDP-11s.

You are not expected to understand this.

Dave

Ouch. It was a great loss to 9fans when Jim decided to stop posting.
In the most heated discussion, he would bring us back to earth with
common sense, kindness and just the right touch of wry humour.

Now an even greater loss that there won't be another chance to have
a beer with him at IWP9.

Re: [9fans] Jim McKie

2020-06-24 Thread Don A. Bailey
So sorry to learn this. My favorite memory of jmk, though I never knew him
personally, was from 2003, when I was still learning how to engineer and hack
operating system kernels. He and I exchanged emails regarding the best way to
audit a kernel’s networking stack, as I had found some bugs in the Plan 9
TCP/IP stack that were remotely exploitable. His point was that I was way over
thinking how to implement a working product, and I should focus more on being a
*good engineer* rather than being a *perfect engineer*, and not worry so much
about how perfect every line I wrote was. I’ll never forget how much that blew
my mind at the time, an idea so simple, that even in a place as “elite” (to me)
as Bell Labs, perfect was the enemy of good, even if innovation was the goal. A
lesson I have carried with me from that day, which may have contributed greatly
to the success I’ve had since then.

Rest in peace, my friend.
