You could have at a look at 'Théorie de la musique' by A. DANHAUSER
(Revised edition, 1996, Editions Henri Lemoine, Paris).

As I understand it:
- !open! is the symbol for (in French) 'harmoniques' on string
instruments, and is a circle, see page 175
- !snap! is for (in French) 'pizz Bartok' on string instruments and is
a circle with a vertical line crossing the circle and continuing up (if
below the staff) or down (if above the staff) on about a half of the
radius of the circle, see page 174
- I don't know anything about !thumb!, but I am a fiddler, not a
cellist...

Don't forget that 'R' is (if not redefined by a 'U' statement) for the
'roll' symbol.

Thanks a lot for your work on abcm2ps!

Amitiés.

Reformulated is an understatement. That section of the draft standard
is total mess. It confuses and conflates the ideas of redefinable
symbols and macros, while introducing the totally unnecessary !text!
construction. I've had both things working in BarFly for several
years, using the syntax which was formulated back in the old abc
developers group. It works beautifully and I have no intention of
replacing it with something which is clearly inferior.

Yes, if you want a program to be fast enough to let you do live editing,
and run on 8-year old machines you have to draw the line somewhere, and
scanning every note to see if it conflicts with any other in any voice
is a little beyond that line. (Mind you, so is antialiassing, unless
you've got a fast PowerMac, so it might come in as an option at some point.)

>and that "y" is a hack that shouldn't be needed).

Same applies. The 'y' gets you where you want to be without using a lot
of processor cycles.
