Bar lines would be nice.
You can use / as a shortcut for /2, which makes the tune more readable.
Also it helps to insert spaces between all the notes which aren't
beamed,
as this also improves readability.

I'll have to ask my teacher what those are. :-)

I'm not just a newbie to ABC music I'm a newbie to music. I went blind a
few years ago and decided to learn how to play the violin. Bach Minuet 1 is
on the first Suzuki violin CD. That's how far I've gotten so far. In fact,
I'm kind of iffy on the concept of a key, and very iffy on meter. we just
haven't covered thos concepts yet.

But I couldn't find Minuet 1 anywhere else so I figured I'd give it a shot.

Well good luck to you. The things I pointed out will all make the abc
easier for a sighted person to read, but I'm not sure whether or not
they would matter to you.

And why not.

Some ABC processing programs emit warnings/errors if the bars do not
have the correct number of beats in them according to the key signature.

It looks like the site is down for a few days...its a Norweigian site, I think.

I hate to admit it, but you're wrong. Webmaster Atté is one of our
Danish brothers from the south.

Anyway, since there seems to be big band musicians on the list, here's a
little belated christmas gift:
http://home.online.no/~frnordbe/bb-blackbird-bb/

(Sorry about the messy fonts, I never intended my big band arrangements
to be distributed digitally at all.)

And, oh yes, a challenge:
Can anybody come up with a good abc transcription of this arrangement?

Re: [abcusers] Newbie Questions

2002-12-26 Thread Ed Skinner
The advice on how to handle automatic measure numbering by *NOT* putting
it into the abc file is particularly valuable. I'm interested in long-term
viability of my abc files. I manage my wife's vocal songbook (in her keys, my
arrangements) as well as my own arrangements of instrumentals of various
other standards. Currently the printouts are generated by Band-In-A-Box but
I'm moving to abc. (I'm using 3.1.9 of abcm2ps on Linux at the moment.
Gorgeous output!) Suggestions for longevity and portability are particularly
helpful.
I presume that the absence of a collection of jazz/pop/country standards
in abc format on the net is because of copyright issues. If such an archive
exists, however, I'd appreciate a pointer.
Again, thank you for the excellent advice.

  1) Is there a FAQ?

If you mean on abc notation itself, please check John Chambers'
Frequently Asked Questions about ABC Music Notation url:
 http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/music/abc/ABC-FAQ.html.

  2) Is there a way to get automatic measure numbering?

Yes, but it is package dependent. J.F. Moine's abcm2ps, for instance,
lets you specify that either of three ways: in the command line, in a
format file or in the tune itself; please check files 'New.Features' and
'format.txt' for details (in abcm2ps's doc directory, e.g.,
/usr/share/doc/abcm2ps-version/). For portability, it would be
advisable not to code this information in the abc file you intend to
store tunes on a permanent basis.

Lots of abc software references may be found at the Abc Home Page url:
http://www.gre.ac.uk/~c.walshaw/abc/ sorted by operating system and
 other criteria.

 Best regards.

No. For Traditional music anyway See:

wonderful, wonderful facility (thanks a lot John)

[abcusers] Newbie.

2002-11-14 Thread Christopher Myers
I tried emailing the list owner, but to no avail.
Does anyone know how to access an archive of postings to this list, or
an FAQ, or a web-accessible version? I don't want to ask questions that
have been posed dozens of times, to the frustration of frequent haunters
of this list.

Thanks,
