[AI] Local Identity not found
Dear Friends, For some unknown reason, my computer displayed a message today morning that the Local Identity could not be found. It set me up in a temperary identity but all the changes would disappear when I shut down. I would like some assistance on the following. 1. What could be the possible causes for this behaviour? I have already ruled out forced shutdown, incomplete shutdown, power fluctuations and had done a virus scan with both AVG and Norton yesterday. 2. Can the Local identity be recovered without reinstalling Windows? 3. In case the local identity cannot be recovered without reinstalling Windows, can I create another identity and have it work as the Local Identity without reinstalling Windows. My operating system is Windows XP. Thanks in advance for any and all assistance. Regards Sameer __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Hai Friends. i have started using FineReader 8.0. well, it gives better scanning result, but takes a lot more time than K1000. can i do something about it by changing any settings? are there some Jaws scripts for FineReader? thangs and regards. One needs to navigate word by word to find out whether the image has been recognised properly or not. I've tried changing some settings in the view menu which gave me some better, although not completely satisfactory results. As for fine reader 8, I don't think this particular problem, at least, will be solved. Jaws works the same with the both versions. [AI] speech synthisizer talking in your own voice?
The following comes from Steve Pattison, which came from the Blindtech list. Hi, I just found a very interesting website and thought I'd pass it on as it can or since it's sapi5, this software, can be used with window-eyes and or jaws. Ok. I'll explain a little first. Suppose you wanted to add your own voice to the library or portfoleo of voices or voice fonts in the ATNT natural voices speech synthesizer. Well you'd have to pay thousands of dollars. But thanks to the website: http://www.asel.udel.edu/speech/ModelTalker.html you can now do it, at least temporarily, for free! The speech synthesizer is called model talker. And you can create new voices with it by using your very own voice, a microphone, and your very own computer. There's good documentation with it that explains what to read and how to read it. If you spend the time. You can make a voice that sounds as good or better than the cepstral voices, or, you can create a voice that sounds as bad or a little worse than microsoft text to speech mary mike and sam voices. But with a little effort. Window-eyes and jaws, since this speech is sapi5 compatible. window-eyes and jaws can now talk in your own voice! or whose-ever voice you decide to record and turn into a voice font. windows messenger/msn [EMAIL PROTECTED] skype ashishrohtagi mobile +919896258072, website, http://members.lycos.co.uk/ashishrohtagi/ To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Laptop battery recall may affect makers other than Dell too
Laptop battery recall may affect makers other than Dell too Anand Parthasarathy Currently used Lithium-ion cells may be prone to explosions - if they are defective CAUTIONARY TALE: A Dell laptop exploding during a conference in Japan in June 2006. The suspected culprit, the lithium-ion battery, is on the screen at right. Bangalore: "The Case of the Exploding Laptop" - that sounds like a Perry Mason mystery. But this is one that has been solved, before anyone was singed. Dell Computers' recall on Tuesday of Sony batteries that went into four million of its laptop computers, may not be the end of the story - merely the end of Episode One. Over one million of these have been sold outside the U.S. All four brands with the suspect batteries - Latitude, Inspiron, XPS and Precision - are marketed in India, where Dell is the fifth largest vendor of laptops. It shipped over 42,000 units in 2005-06, according to Dataquest. However, not all the batteries sold with the four models may be defective. Dell has set up a website to help customers identify returnable batteries by their serial number: www.dellbatteryprogram.com/Default.aspx Same technology In June, the U.K. technology website TheInquirer.net carried dramatic photos sent in by a delegate at a conference in Japan, where a Dell laptop spontaneously burst into flames with a bang. Since then, many portable PC makers are known to be grappling with the potential problem. Almost all manufacturers use the same technology today for both laptops and mobile phone batteries: Lithium-ion. This process perfected in 1991 by Sony, which supplies Dell as well as others, uses carbon as one electrode and a metal oxide as the other. The electrolyte or liquid that sets off the reaction is a salt of Lithium. This is an efficient process to deliver a big current in a small battery size. But as hundreds of blogs will testify, the industry has known for at least three years now that it is a rather unsafe process: If there are tiny impurities in the electrolyte, and the battery heats up owing to continuous use, Lithium metal tends to form - and this can `short' the positive and negative terminals, causing a spark. Other laptop vendors may have to face up to the problem of quality control in lithium battery manufacturing processes, because Dell is not the only one selling these products. While the same Lithium ion technology also fuels almost all the world's nearly two billion mobile phones, it is less likely to pose a danger to their users. Because, the current drawn by phones is a fraction of what laptops demand. The chances of overheating are, therefore, less. Inevitably, this will lay open the entire issue of Lithium-ion battery technology. There has been a lot of research in Lithium-polymer and other possibly safer variants including some super-small nanotechnology materials. Recent incidents of incendiary laptops may help accelerate such developments. This may also force some rethinking on laptop use by passengers on civilian aircraft - or at least the use of built-in batteries. Many airlines provide power outlets in business and first class and this may be the only safe way to use laptops in flight - until the IT industry comes up with fool-proof battery technology to fuel portable computing. But in `Internet time' everything shrinks — and a bouncing baby of two years, can be saluted for its maturity. Earlier this month, the global Storage Networking Industry Association, accorded full-self governing regional status to its unit here — SNIA-India — recognising that this is one of the fastest growing markets anywhere for the computer storage industry. A high-powered delegation from SNIA's San Francisco (U.S.) base was in Bangalore to make the recognition formal. "India has gained the confidence of the storage networking community," says Association President Wayne Adams. Established in May 2004, SNIA-India, today has 63 members covering almost all the storage `biggies' operating in India as well as academics and research institutions. Galloping growth Disk storage in this country which totalled just 4 peta bytes in 2003, is growing at a galloping 68.8 per cent and is expected to become 8 PB by 2008, says SNIA-India Chairman P.K. Gupta. (A peta byte is one quadrillion bytes or a million-billion bytes or chunks of data). The new requirements of video surveillance, as well as oil-and-gas, healthcare and e-governance are emerging as the most storage-hungry sectors in India. This sector is targeted by enterprise-level providers like EMC, NetApp, Hitachi and others. EMC, a member of SNIA-India created the world's largest and fastest single storage solution — the 1-petabyte Symmetrix DM-X3, earlier this year. The mammoth costs $ 4 million and as yet there are no takers in India (the entire storage of Google is estimated to be between 2 and 5 petabytes). Sometimes a long tail can wag the dog: Vincent Franceschini, Chairman of SNIA's Strategic Alliances group told this correspondent that while the association elsewhere tended to be dominated by the large enterprise players, it recognises the unique features of its Indian presence: a very large market at the consumer end, where individual users accounted for a few gigabytes per head. Tantalising choices In recent weeks lay users have been offered some tantalising choices to help store, backup or securely carry their digital data, pictures or other memorabilia with them. Seagate, a respected name in hard drives, has unveiled 10 new products for any-time, any-where storage from a pocketable gigabyte or two, all the way to the world's smallest 750 GB push-button back-up drive, in a 3.5 inch diameter hard disk. Last year Seagate had launched what was then the world's smallest pocket hard drive — 5 GB in a palm-sized disk with a clever retractable cable, where the actual hard drive was just over 3 cms in diameter. Now, the company has upped the storage in the same form factor to 8 GB and it is expected to sell in India, close to its international pricing of $ 150 — around Rs 7,000. The `hot pluggable' Universal Serial Bus (USB 2.0) interface allows protected data to be securely exchanged with a PC or laptop at 480 mega bits per second. Eight GB is roughly equivalent to 8 hours of video or 133 hours of music. Western Digital, one of the oldest hard disk players has brought some of its latest disk-based portable storage solutions to India. The ultra thin WD Passport Pocket Drive, fits snugly in a purse or shirt pocket, weighs just 50 gms and stores 6 GB. The flip-up USB plug sits inside a rubberised sleeve — just in case you drop it and the data transfer speeds are comparable to the Seagate pocket drive. For those who want to carry a copy of their entire PC or laptop disk storage with them, Western Digital has the WD Passport Portable USB drive which uses a rugged 2.5 inch hard drive to store 120 GB in a flat case that looks and feels like an over-sized cigarette case. It costs Rs 11,000. Free with both WD devices is one of the coolest pieces of software that comes within a whisker of satisfying every user's dream of actually carrying one's PC in the pocket. It is called WD Sync and it comes on a CD with the hard disk. It allows you to synchronise and carry all the files and utilities from your parent PC on the portable device. You access and work on them, even browsing securely, using the Advanced Encryption Standard 128-bit encryption, when the WD device is plugged into any other PC — say a machine in a cyber café. It leaves no files behind on the system you are using and erases your history o

[AI] Hackers target latest Windows fix
Hackers target latest Windows fix Spamm subject lines in e-mail inbox, BBC The worm tries to use hijacked machines to send spam Hi-tech hackers have started to produce malicious programs that target the latest bugs in Microsoft's Windows. A worm has been spotted in the wild that tries to use vulnerabilities to hijack home computers. Any computer compromised by the worm will become part of a large botnet set up to send out junk mail. At the same time Microsoft is re-issuing a recent security patch which has made the Internet Explorer browser crash on some computers. Spam sender On 8 August Microsoft released a bumper collection of security patches for 23 separate flaws in Windows and programs in the Office software suite. One of the problems identified in the August update was deemed so serious that the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a warning urging users to download the patch and apply it as soon as possible. The DHS has a role in securing America's critical infrastructure which includes the internet. Now security companies have caught copies of a worm travelling the net that tries to infect Windows machines via this loophole. The Mocbot worm attacks machines running Windows 2000 or XP that only have Service Pack 1 installed. "As Microsoft only issued a patch against this vulnerability last week, many Windows computers probably remain unpatched and vulnerable to these threats," said Carole Theriault, senior security consultant at Sophos in a statement. Computer security firms have seen two variants of this worm circulating online. Analysis by Joe Stewart at security firm Lurhq show that, once installed, it tries to download a trojan known to act as a spam proxy. These are networks of compromised machines that junk mailers have been forced to use because so few net service firms will host companies that send out millions of unwanted messages. Microsoft said it would be re-issuing one of the security patches because, in certain circumstances, it can cause the Internet Explorer browser to crash. The problem occurs with the MS06-42 update which tried to fix eight separate vulnerabilities in the IE browser. Relatively few users are thought to be suffering from the clash between IE and the security patches. Microsoft said it affected IE with Service Pack 1 installed but only if visiting websites that use data compression and the widely used version 1.1 of the HTTP web protocols. Microsoft said it expected to have the new version of the MS06-42 update ready by 22 August. However, a "hotfix" has been made available but Microsoft said this should only be installed on those computers crashing because of the update. [AI] Low Modem Speed.
Hello, I recently changed almost all my pc components except the floppy drive and the hard drive. I notice that the new modem speed is miserably low as compared with my previous modem. It is hardly 20% of the previous speed. I am using windows xp sp2 on a 2.8 ghz celeron procesor with 256 mb RAM whereas I previously used windows 98 s.e. on a 633 mhz celeron processor with 128 mb RAM. I have tried several things including disabling automatic windows update feature and installing tata web acelerator. It has not yielded any noticeable improvement. Please help. Best regards, Amiyo. Re: [AI] require some info
Infact, one doesn't need to read the recognized text in FineReader. There are options to save the recognized text to a Word file or other formats. This feature works very well. When saving the text to Word, hiphens at line endings are also removed automatically. Re: [AI] ADOBE UPDATE
I do not know whether there is a solution for this problem, but I had this problem too. I used to get an Adobe update prompt practically every time I restarted my machine. The most recent one was for installing Chinese fonts, which I never used and did not need in the first place. I finally removed the entire Adobe software from my machine. I now use Jamal's Textpal to read PDF files. - Original Message - From: "Vikas Kapoor" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Access India" Sent: Wednesday, August 16, 2006 9:57 AM Subject: [AI] ADOBE UPDATE > Hello List, > I have adobe 7.0 installed on my machine at this time, I'm getting a > prompt for at least five updates; adobe Photoshop for starter edition, > adobe 7.5, adobe 7.7, adobe 7.8 and tools for additional language. Re: [AI] require some info
Jaws works well with fine reader 7, apart from the fact that it does not read the scanned text properly. But, anyway, other functions are manageable with jaws. - Original Message - From: "Mahesh Panicker" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Wednesday, August 16, 2006 5:19 PM Subject: Re: [AI] require some info > does FineReader work well with jaws? i have FineReader 7 with me. what about > that? where can i get version 8.0? > thanks and regards. > > > On 8/16/06, Kiran Kaja <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > > FineReader Professional 8.0 seems to give far superior recognition > > accuracy > > than Kurzweil 8.0. Re: [AI] require some info regarding scanner
Yes, Epson is still my preferred choice of scanners. They are extremely fast and offer very good scan quality. But I couldn't find one in India when I was looking to buy it a couple of years ago. I had to import it from Singapore. Unfortunately, I am not aware of the low end models available these days and their performance. For my scanning needs, I am now using an HP Scanjet 8200 which is a legal sized scanner and scans a full page (legal) in less than 6 seconds. But this thing costs upwards of 27000.
