[AI] Reading a .txt file using Talks
Friends, As part of my experimentation with my new Nokia 6681 cell phone with the Talks screen reader, I tried reading a .txt file. While the continuous reading mode seems to be working fine, I am not able to do simple cursor navigations like skipping paragraphs, pages, starting from the last point of halt etc. Can someone kindly guide me through the intricacies of the application (QuickWord) ? Can we cut, copy and paste text onto other files ? Thanks in advance and regards RS M: 98 472 76 126 To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] ATMs for Visually Impaired
Hi Rakesh, It pains me to learn that this gentleman has been rejected by ICICI bank. If you could furnish details; I could write to Chairman through my CII colleague. I have been using ICICI account for over 4 years without a problem. I also use HSBC account and not much problem their either. asif - Original Message - From: "Dr Rakesh Jain" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Thursday, September 14, 2006 1:01 AM Subject: Re: [AI] ATMs for Visually Impaired > Don't you think that it is sheer hippocricy on the part of the bank! [AI] Planning to upgrade your hardware ?
>From rediff.com Things to watch out for... For those buying or upgrading a computer, here's what you ought to know about its most important component: the CPU. The Central Processing Unit, sometimes simply called the processor, is your computer's brain. It manipulates information within the computer and co-ordinates its flow around the different devices that make up the computer. Intel and AMD manufacturer the bulk of CPUs seen in personal computers. Other manufacturers with a small share of the market include VIA and Transmeta. Processors may be classified into four categories: . Server processors . Budget desktop processors . Performance desktop processors . Mobile processors Server processors Intel Xeon processors and AMD Opteron processors fall into this category. These CPUs are used in corporate servers and will generally never be used in the desktop computers most individuals have. Budget desktop processors In this category we have the Celeron series from Intel and the Sempron series from AMD. These processors are more than adequate for normal office work like typing letters, working with accounts, checking email or browsing the Internet. They can even be used to comfortably watch movies or listen to music. The Celerons range in cost from Rs 2,800 to Rs 3,500, while Semprons cost between Rs 2,400 and Rs 3,000. Performance desktop processors These are suitable for those who like to play the latest games or those who work on tasks that require a lot of processing power -- for example, image or video editing. AMD offers the Athlon 64 series (Rs 3,500 to Rs 8,000) and the Athlon 64 X2 series (Rs 8,500 to Rs 10,500). Intel has the Pentium 4 series (Rs 4,000 to Rs 6,000), the Pentium 4 D Series (Rs 6,000 to Rs 9,500) and the Core 2 Duo Series (Rs 9,500 to Rs 16,500). Mobile processors Used in laptop computers. Examples are the AMD Turion and Intel processors with Centrino technology. These processors are optimised so they do not heat up as much or drain the battery as much as normal processors do. Picking the right CPU Several factors are to be considered when deciding on the CPU for your computer. These are, in order of importance, the applications you will be using, the cost (of course), actual architecture of the CPU, and the way the CPU integrates with the rest of the system. The 32-bit versus 64-bit debate The CPU handles data and instructions applied to the data. The data/instructions are transferred to/from the main system memory (generally called RAM) using a pathway known as the data bus. The wider this pathway, the more the data that can be transferred simultaneously. Therefore, 64 bit CPUs can transfer more data at a time to/from the CPU as compared to 32 bit CPUs. This translates to better performance for certain kinds of operations. The AMD 64 series and Intel CPUs with EMT64 technology are examples of 64 bit CPUs. What's a cache? The CPU can operate much faster than the main system memory. Hence, all CPUs also have some memory of their own to speed up their operation. This memory is known as cache and is classified as L1/L2/L3 cache. Generally, the greater the cache, the faster the CPU operates. Does clock speed still matter? In order to synchronise its operations, the CPU uses a clock. The speed of this clock is measured in GHz. So, you have processors rated at 2.66 GHz, 2.8 GHz, 3 GHz and so on. Earlier, it was true that the higher the clock speed, the faster the processor. However, this no longer holds true, as lower clock speed processors can outperform higher clocked processors due to other architectural differences. While on the subject of speed, it is also important to note that the processor name doesn't always indicate clock speed. For instance, the AMD Sempron 2600+ gives the performance of a 2.6 GHz processor but actually runs at 1.8 GHz. Two hands are better than one In order to speed up the operation of the CPU, manufacturers resort to different strategies. Hyperthreading is one such strategy from Intel. This technology attempts to obtain higher performance from the CPU by allowing instructions to be simultaneously executed. However, you will see performance gains only if you are using the right mix of applications. To use an analogy from the kitchen, if you were preparing soup, you could begin chopping vegetables instead of waiting while the water boils. However, if you were preparing tea, you'd have to wait until the water boiled before doing anything else. Another strategy involves placing more than one CPU core within a single CPU package. The Core Duo processors from Intel and the Athlon 64 X2 processors from AMD are examples of this. If we go back to our kitchen analogy, two cooks can certainly cook faster than one, provided the kind of dishes they are preparing allows this. In a similar manner, you would obtain performance gains from dual core CPUs depending on the type of applications you are using and your usage

No one can defend ICICI for this discrimination. But their ATM's, or any other ATM's for that matter, can be used by users with their accounts in other banks also. I think, They charge rs50 extra if you use their ATM and don't have an account with them. Re: [AI] ATMs for Visually Impaired
ATM for visually challenged ICICI Bank has launched Special ATM machines for visually Challenged People. This has been made possible by voice guided system and specially made function display keys which guide a Visually Challenged person to operate the ATM . Through the use of Headphones plugged into a jack on the terminal, customer hears a voice that guides the customer through the transaction. The ATM also gives choice of languages in which a Customer wants to hear Instructions. Once the language is selected, tha ATM guides the customer to insert his ATM card in the slot, which has one 'pip' (a raised, rounded button) above it. The ATM then guides the customer to enter his PIN through the numeric keypad, which again has one 'pip' on the number 5 (as is available generally on telephones/mobiles). For picking up the cash that is presented to him, the ATM guides customers to the slot on which there are two 'pips'. Once the cash is taken, the customer is directed to take back the card and pull out the receipt from the slot, which has three 'pips'. These ATMs are equipped with Video Surveillance devices. Regular customers can also use this ATM under normal course. Currently "ATMs for Visually Challenged" are available at the following two locations Venkatesh Meher, Ghole Road, Shivajinagar, Pune 411 005 Ground Floor, Kala Academy, Ravindra Natya Mandir, Prabhadevi,Mumbai - 400 028. [AI] The Hard Drive Turns 50
The Hard Drive Turns 50 A look back at where hard drives have been--and where they're going. Melissa J. Perenson, PC World Today, the hard drive is found everywhere--from the PCs we use daily to MP3 players and memory keys so small you can toss them in your pocket and forget you're carrying around a hard drive. But when the hard drive was first introduced on September 13, 1956, it required a humongous housing and 50 24-inch platters to store 1/2400 as much data as can be fit on today's largest capacity 1-inch hard drives. Back then, the small team at IBM's San Jose-based lab was seeking a way to replace tape with a storage mechanism that allowed for more-efficient random access to data. The question was, how to bring random-access storage to business computing? Enter the RAMAC, 1956 IBM's answer to this quandary was the Random Access Method of Accounting and Control, dubbed the RAMAC for expediency. The device's name is a direct reflection of the need for such capabilities in the enterprise. Led by project leader Rey Johnson, IBM's San Jose lab brought the RAMAC 305 to market. Recalls Al Shugart, who worked as a field engineer at IBM before joining the RAMAC project and went on to later found Seagate Technology: "They were starting from scratch in the lab. The RAMAC was not just a disk drive, it was a whole system. Nobody had made disk drives before." The approach IBM's engineers came up with represented a clean approach to random data access, notes Shugart: "The concept of the whole disk drive was random access." To achieve random access, the device would have to move its read/write heads around to different data tracks. "The easiest way to do that," he says, "was a stack of disks." The integrated RAMAC was about two refrigerators in width and not quite as tall, and it literally weighed a ton. Its 50 24-inch platters were in a stack inside the unit, in an assembly that spun at 1200 revolutions per minute. The unit used two magnetic recording heads. The RAMAC could hold 5MB--about the storage that today is needed for one 5-minute MP3 encoded at 128 kilobits per second. In order to read and write the data, the RAMAC heads moved across a series of circular tracks on each disk surface. Albert Hoagland, who helped build the first drive and is working to preserve the history of magnetic disk technology as executive director of the Magnetic Disk Heritage Center , elaborates: "A shaft ran the length of the disk stack, with a horizontal arm that moved in and out; that arm, which weighed three pounds, had to get to another track in less than a second." "The disks' surfaces were covered with a paint that had magnetic properties--very similar to the paint used on the Golden Gate Bridge," says Bill Healy, senior vice president at Hitachi (which bought IBM's storage division in 2003). "They needed a disk with magnetic properties, so it would be magnetically susceptible to recording 1s and 0s; and they needed a read element, such as a disk head, to detect, read, and write that data," he explains. The initial prototype, remembers Shugart, "was a relay machine, it wasn't even a vacuum tube machine. They ended up building 12 of them. From there on, we would design a system for production, including a disk drive. The production [version] was a vacuum tube machine, and I was in charge of designing the computer system for the vacuum tube machine." Although the RAMAC shares only passing characteristics with today's hard drives, it is the drive that launched the industry. "The [technology] industry reinvented itself as the applications for the hard drive changed," says Healy. "In the fifties and sixties, these devices were made for large corporations, government--the enterprise. The 24-inch diameter platter reduced in size in time. As the devices got smaller over that time, they were mainly aimed at the enterprise environment," he continues. Disk capacity doubled every two years, a 40 percent compound growth rate. Adds storage industry analyst Tom Coughlin of Coughlin Associates: "Many companies started to make hard drives for computers, because it was a relatively inexpensive, high-performance way to make mass storage." >From the late fifties to the early seventies, hard drives were largely used in >mainframe computer systems, the kinds found in large corporations and >government. The rise of personal computers in the late seventies and early eighties opened the door of opportunity for hard drives--and in turn dramatically influenced where computer technology could go. "With the introduction of hard disk drives," notes Coughlin, "you had large amounts of storage that were always attached to the computer, and that enabled personal computers to achieve the levels of success they had. A hard drive allowed you to create higher-performance computers with more features because you could have a richer operating system running off the hard drive." http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,127
