[AI] a portable text reader to help the disabled.

2006-09-19 Thread Rohan
Korea based A.D. Information has announced the Voice-Eye a portable text reader
designed to help the disabled. The unit comprises of two
parts a barcode
scanner 'Voice-Eye Symbol' and a player that reads the text stored in
the special Voice-Eye Symbol.
The player looks like a crude version of the iPod with controls
arranged in the familiar click wheel style. It supports English,
Chinese, Japanese, and
Korean, by installing TTS (Text to Speech) engine it can support
additional languages.
It plays music too as no modern day gizmo is complete without MP3
playback. The Voice-Eye is currently being used in courts across Korea
for reading out
the judgement and other news to handicapped people. The voice produced
very much human like, it supports stand alone recording without the
need of a PC.
Files can be transferred via USB connection.
A Lithium Polymer battery powers the Voice-Eye, pricing and
availability is not known yet.

The project Gutenberg has almost all the books by H.G. Wells. Check
outhttp://www.gutenberg.org/browse/authors/w

As for Asimov, you will find the entire foundation series and almost all
the books in the FTP site I mentioned in my previous mail. Just go to the
fiction folder and locate the folder with the name of Asimov.

Enjoy and be in touch.

Well, this approach seems to be a complicated one. How easy or difficult
is it to embed the text of the whole page in a bar code?

I saw this device. It is essentially a bar code reader. The concept is
that
every page of the book would have a bar-code on one of the corners which
would have complete text of the page coded in this bar-code. Size of
this
bar-code is about one CM by one CM. there is a small bar code scanner.
By a
press of a button, the bar code reader scanns the bar code and starts
reading the text coded in that bar-code. In Koria they are having some
publications with such bar codes. It would read only the books that have
such bar codes.

The cost of this too is quite prohabitive right now.

Thanks

Better if you send a list of preferred books to the list. I can arrange

 disappointed.
I think James Hilton is still under copyright. As about not finding site
with relevant books, one has to look desperately for specific books and
 very
often you do get them, irrespective of the copyright status.

 Hai Tara and others:

I haven't tried very many of the book sites. But, none of them seem to
have relevant books. For example, I haven't found many Sci-Fi's not even
stuffs like H G Wells, Isaac Asimov etc. One novel I have been wanting
to read in e-text form is 'Goodbye Mr. Chipps' (By James Hilton). This
book was written in 1935 and surely, this can't be under copyright any
more. Yet, I don't find this at all.

 By Hilton, if you like.
I can send some more science fiction.
Better if you send a list of preferred books to the list. I can arrange
 some
and there are others who are in touch with books. I am sure you won't be
 disappointed.
I think James Hilton is still under copyright. As about not finding site
with relevant books, one has to look desperately for specific books and
 very
often you do get them, irrespective of the copyright status.
 Take care

 Taraprakash,

You can send international messages from Yahoo
Messenger. But these messages can be sent to only
those people who are in your Contacts List in Yahoo
Messenger and whose mobile numbers are in the contact
details. So, the person to whom you want to send a SMS
via messenger should have a Yahoo account at least.
The account can be on Yahoo.com or on Yahoo.co.in or
on any other country specific Yahoo service.

For sending SMS messages to people without Yahoo
 accounts, try the following workaround.

 1. Create a second email id on Yahoo
 2. Add the new email Id as a contact in the Contacts
List in Yahoo Messenger. Give this contact a dummy
 name like Z or X.
 3. When you want to send a SMS to a person not on your
Contacts List, open the Contact Details of the dummy
contact added in the above step.
 4. Save and close the Contact Details.
 5. On the dummy contact, press the application key. A
list of options will open. One of these options will
 be Send Text Message.
 6. A box will open up and the cursor will be placed in
the edit field where you can type your message. When
you have finished typing, tav over to Send and press
Enter. The message will be sent.

[AI] Greenpeace: laptops hazardous

2006-09-19 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Greenpeace: laptops hazardous

Special Correspondent

Harmful chemicals found in branded ones

HP has failed and is behind the times
Apple has earned itself an image of an industrial dinosaur

NEW DELHI: A Greenpeace study has shown presence of toxic substances in
well-known branded laptops with HP and Apple having the highest contamination
levels.

Among other things, the Greenpeace report Toxic Chemicals in Computers
Exposed showed that the HP laptop had high levels of a number of chemicals in
its
components, in particular the highest levels by far of PBDEs (a class of
brominated flame retardant) including decaBDE, in the fan. Lead was also
detected
in the soldering. The Apple Macbook contained in the fan the highest level
among the five brands tested for TBBPA BFR. Many of the chemicals found in the
laptops, including lead, PVC and some BFRs, are hazardous to health and persist
in the environment, the study has said.
