Subject: [AI] about synbiosys-most urgent

 Hi list members,
this is with reference to the admissions at Sybiosys Distant learning
programme. I have posted a couple of mails earlier, but couldn't get
 response from the members.
I would like to highlight the issue, so that the list members are
clear and the issue can be resolved.
Before taking the application form, I had sent mail to Synbiosys
Centre for Distant Learning (hereinafter mentioned as SCDL), about the
need for scribe facility. they had responded that this is the first
case, and they would look into the matter if other universities had
provided. based on the response I went ahead taking the application
and enrolling himself. Now I have to pay the first instalment fees
and they are saying that management has to take decision as regards
the scribe, until which my admission will be pending. i have been
communicating to them through mail but I am not able to get any
 response from their end.

I would highly appreciate if any NGO or others at Pune or Mumbai may
take up the matter with SCDL on my behalf. If we get the permission,
perhaps many mover can join the course. I would highly appreciate if
I can get a response from the list members in this regard. Thanks in
 advance. Rgds, Rajani (9980096996)

I haven't tried very many of the book sites. But, none of them seem to
have relevant books. For example, I haven't found many Sci-Fi's not
even
stuffs like H G Wells, Isaac Asimov etc. One novel I have been wanting

bookshare doesn't allow copyright material to the foreigners. I am not

if you can be a member.
It is always better before asking such questions, what your interests

 try the following links:

 http://promo.net/pg
 http://www.bookshare.org.

These sites will provide free access to bookks that are not
 copyrighted.
 You
can subscribe with bookshare with some payment to gain access to the
 recent
copyrighted books, although the subscription process is complicated.

Bartleby is also there, but the problem there is that ou need to read
 the
book chapter by chapter or section by section. As far as I know, you
 cannot
download the whole book from Bartleby.

 Also try this ftp site:

 ftp://jeffstud:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/public_ftp/incoming/Books/

 Enjoy

Oh! Subramani, don't say that they have confusion despite doing their
literature, for god's sake. Nobody would give credence to an M.A. English,
then. John Milton never did write a novel, in fact, novel as we know it
today, was unknown in his days.

These sites will provide free access to bookks that are not

 You

Oh! Subramani, don't say that they have confusion despite doing their
literature, for god's sake. Nobody would give credence to an M.A. English,
then. John Milton never did write a novel, in fact, novel as we know it

Re: [AI] a portable text reader to help the disabled.

2006-09-20 Thread Dipendra Manocha
The approach does require that such barcoes are included on books and other
things. The software for doing so is being provided by the same company.
Government rules are required for this approach where publishers need to
spend a little extra to introdue such bar codes on every page. The benefit
is that mistakes and lose of formatting caused by OCR will not happen and
barcode owner can get clean e-text out of the book.

It is not meant for general application of text reading or general barcode
reading.

It also requires that the bar code is placed at a particular location of the
page so that the reader can be placed on it with sighted help.

Thanks

Well, this approach seems to be a complicated one. How easy or difficult is
it to embed the text of the whole page in a bar code?

I saw this device. It is essentially a bar code reader. The concept is that
every page of the book would have a bar-code on one of the corners which
would have complete text of the page coded in this bar-code. Size of this
bar-code is about one CM by one CM. there is a small bar code scanner.
By a
press of a button, the bar code reader scanns the bar code and starts
reading the text coded in that bar-code. In Koria they are having some
publications with such bar codes. It would read only the books that have
such bar codes.

The cost of this too is quite prohabitive right now.

Korea based A.D. Information has announced the Voice-Eye a portable
text
reader designed to help the disabled. The unit comprises of two parts
a barcode scanner 'Voice-Eye Symbol' and a player that reads the text
stored in the special Voice-Eye Symbol.
The player looks like a crude version of the iPod with controls
arranged in the familiar click wheel style. It supports English,
Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, by installing TTS (Text to Speech)
engine it can support additional languages.
It plays music too as no modern day gizmo is complete without MP3
playback. The Voice-Eye is currently being used in courts across Korea
for reading out the judgement and other news to handicapped people.
The voice produced very much human like, it supports stand alone
recording without the need of a PC.
Files can be transferred via USB connection.
A Lithium Polymer battery powers the Voice-Eye, pricing and
 availability is not known yet.

[AI] Laser Chips' Could Replace Wires in Your PC

2006-09-20 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Laser Chips' Could Replace Wires in Your PC

Sep 19, 2006

Researchers from Intel and the University of California at Santa Barbara have
found a way to build low-cost laser chips that could eventually shuttle
data around PCs at much higher speeds than today's copper wire interconnects.

The researchers combined the properties of a compound semiconductor material
called indium phosphide, which emits light constantly, and silicon, which can
be used to amplify and direct that light. They sandwiched the materials
together to create a single device that can be manufactured using standard
chip-making
techniques.

The breakthrough, announced today, is significant because it could help the
interconnect technologies that carry data between components in PCs and servers
keep pace with the rapid advances in the processing power of the chips
themselves, the researchers said.

What It Means

This could bring low-cost, terabit-level optical 'data pipes' inside future
computers and help make possible a new era of high-performance computing
applications,
said Mario Paniccia, director of Intel's
Photonics Technology Lab ,
in a statement.

The work may be several years away from commercialization, but the researchers
expect eventually to be able to put dozens or even hundreds of lasers on
a single chip, they said.

Indium phosphide is already widely used to make lasers for fiber-optic
networks, but the cost of assembling and aligning the lasers makes them too
expensive
for the high-volume PC business. Silicon, on the other hand, can amplify and
control light and could be used more affordably, but it is not an efficient
generator of light itself.

How It Works: 'Glass Glue'

The researchers figured out a way to combine the two materials to build a
hybrid silicon laser that can be manufactured using Intel's standard
manufacturing
techniques, keeping costs relatively low.

To make the silicon laser, they created a thin oxide layer roughly 25 atoms
thick on the surface of each material. They then heated the oxide and pressed
the two layers together, forming a single chip with a glass glue between
them. Applying a voltage to the device generates light from the indium
phosphide,
which passes through the joining layer to be guided and controlled by the
silicon.

The laser light can send data between computer components at extremely high
speed. This can be done using a silicon optical modulator, which effectively
turns the laser beam on and off at very high speeds to represent the 1s and 0s
of computer code.

Intel has already demonstrated a silicon modulator that can transmit data at up
to 10 gigabits per second. Figuring out how to make the hybrid silicon laser
was the last big barrier to using silicon-based optical devices in computers
and data centers, the researchers said.

That capability becomes more pressing as engineers design processors with
multiple cores--just two or four today but tens or hundreds in the near future,
Paniccia said during a conference call with reporters.

That type of terascale computing will need terascale information moving into
and out of servers to keep the chips fed with data, which is extremely difficult
to do on copper, he said.

Most data moving farther than 100 meters travels over optical cables today, but
the high cost of photonics prohibits its use for shorter distances, where
copper prevails for data connections within rooms or between motherboards,
Paniccia said.

What we're been working on is to siliconize photonics, bringing volume
economics to optical communications, he said. It's comparable to the
breakthrough
from the vacuum tube to the first planar integrated circuit, in that it allows
you to build things at a size and cost that fundamentally weren't available
before.

Once engineers can use a low-cost, high-bandwidth optical interconnect, they
will be able to create entirely new computer designs, such as remote memory,
a design that stores data up to 2 feet away from a processor instead of the
current standard of 6 inches, he said. That architecture would radically change
the cooling requirements and form factors of computer design.

As a next step, the researchers must find easier ways to manufacture this
electrically pumped hybrid silicon laser, and then figure out how to combine it
on a single chip with a standard computing processor, he said. Once they
achieve that, binary data will be able to flow as electrons, then protons, and
back again, enabling enormous rates of speed and efficiency.

[AI] Austek, Samsung Ready Ultra Mobile PCs

2006-09-20 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Austek, Samsung Ready Ultra Mobile PCs

Sep 19, 2006

Asustek Computer will begin selling its first ultra mobile PC, the R2H,
worldwide by the end of this month, while Samsung Electronics is readying one
that
eschews Intel microprocessors in favor of Via Technologies chips.

Asustek's ultra mobile UMPC is designed with all the functions of a laptop,
including a folding typing pad, as well as other devices, such as a global
positioning
system (GPS) so it can sit on the dashboard of a user's car to map the way home.

The R2H runs Microsoft Windows XP Tablet Edition OS on a 900MHz Intel Celeron M
microprocessor. It measures 9.3 by 5.3 inches, about half the size of a
laptop, and weighs just under 2 pounds. The OS allows touch navigation with a
stylus on its 7-inch screen, but the models on display Monday at a news
conference
in Taipei were difficult to use. Company representatives said the display
models were for testing only, the reason for the sluggish performance.

Like
most UMPCs ,
the R2H is an Internet device, connecting through 802.11b/g Wireless LAN, and
supports Bluetooth. For security, Asustek added an infrared fingerprint
identification
system to keep users' data safe from thieves.

Although the suggested retail price of the R2H bound for the Taiwan market is
$1117, it will come in different configurations users can choose from, so
prices will be flexible. Asustek will offer models with different sized hard
drives, ranging from 20GB to 60GB in capacity. The standard edition will also
come with just a two-cell battery, for about two hours of use before needing a
recharge. Users will be able to select a four-cell battery as well, at an
added cost.

The device is Windows Vista compatible.

The company also launched a new tablet PC, the R1F, and expects to produce a
total of 3000 units of the two devices each month, said Benson Lin, head of
sales in the Asia Pacific for Asustek, at a news conference in Taipei.

Samsung's next gen

Samsung Electronics, of South Korea, is readying a new UMPC with a 7-inch
screen that uses a 1.0GHz Via C7 microprocessor, but hasn't set a launch date.

The device, dubbed the Q1B, will come with 40GB of storage space, WLAN and
Bluetooth, and will weigh 1.7 pounds, according to
Samsung's Web site .

The Q1B will come with a better battery than the R2H, a three-cell battery
offering up to five hours of life before needing a recharge. Samsung is offering
an upgrade to a six-cell battery at an additional charge. It follows the Q1
launched in May .

The company is also offering additional peripherals similar to Asustek's, such
as an organizer bag, optical disc drive, and typing pad.

[AI] Free anonymising browser debuts

2006-09-20 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Free anonymising browser debuts

Sep 20, 2006

Web users worried about privacy can now use a modified version of Firefox that
lets them browse the net anonymously.

The Torpark browser has been created by a hacking group and uses technology
backed by digital rights group the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Torpark uses its own network of net routers to anonymise the traffic people
generate when they browse the web.

The browser can be put on a flash memory stick so users can turn any PC into an
anonymous terminal.

Hide and seek

The Torpark tool has been created by Hacktivismo - an international coalition
of hackers, human rights workers, lawyers and artists.

Torpark uses the Tor network of internet routers set up by the Electronic
Frontier Foundation that already has tens of thousands of regular users.

Whenever any computer connects to the net it freely shares information about
the address it is using. This is so any data it requests is sent back to the
right place.

The Tor network tries to stop this information being shared in two ways. First,
it encrypts traffic between a computer and the Tor network of routers -
this makes it much harder to spy on the traffic and pinpoint who is doing what.

Second, the Tor network regularly changes the net address that someone appears
to be browsing from - again this frustrates any attempt to pin a particular
browsing session on any individual.

We live in a time where acquisition technologies are cherry picking and
collating every aspect of our online lives, said Oxblood Ruffin, one of the
founders
of Hacktivismo, in a statement announcing Torpark.

Mr Ruffin was at pains to point out that the anonymising abilities of Torpark
had its limitations. Data travelling between the websites people look at and
the Tor network is unencrypted and it could be possible to identify users if
they visit sites that do not encrypt login sessions.

The programs making up the free Torpark download are small enough to install on
a USB flash memory stick allowing people to take the anonymising browser
with them. Before now it has been possible to configure Firefox to use Tor and
its associated identity hiding programs but Torpark puts all these elements
in one package.

Hacktivisimo said that anyone using Torpark might see a slight reduction in
their browsing speed as the package of programs connect to the Tor network and
scramble traffic.

The Torpark browser includes an clickable icon that lets people switch between
anonymous and ordinary browsing.

It may also cause frustration as the regular change of net address may make
some sites think that a new user is visiting and ask once more for login
details.

Oh! Subramani, don't say that they have confusion despite doing their
literature, for god's sake. Nobody would give credence to an M.A. English,
then. John Milton never did write a novel, in fact, novel as we know it
today, was unknown in his days.

 Free anonymising browser debuts

 Sep 20, 2006

Web users worried about privacy can now use a modified version of Firefox
that lets them browse the net anonymously.

The Torpark browser has been created by a hacking group and uses
technology backed by digital rights group the Electronic Frontier
 Foundation.

Torpark uses its own network of net routers to anonymise the traffic
people generate when they browse the web.

The browser can be put on a flash memory stick so users can turn any PC
 into an anonymous terminal.

 Hide and seek

The Torpark tool has been created by Hacktivismo - an international
coalition of hackers, human rights workers, lawyers and artists.

Torpark uses the Tor network of internet routers set up by the Electronic
Frontier Foundation that already has tens of thousands of regular users.

Whenever any computer connects to the net it freely shares information
about the address it is using. This is so any data it requests is sent
 back to the
 right place.

The Tor network tries to stop this information being shared in two ways.
First, it encrypts traffic between a computer and the Tor network of
 routers -
this makes it much harder to spy on the traffic and pinpoint who is doing
 what.

Second, the Tor network regularly changes the net address that someone
appears to be browsing from - again this frustrates any attempt to pin a
 particular
 browsing session on any individual.

We live in a time where acquisition technologies are cherry picking and
collating every aspect of our online lives, said Oxblood Ruffin, one of
 the founders
of Hacktivismo, in a statement announcing Torpark.

Mr Ruffin was at pains to point out that the anonymising abilities of
Torpark had its limitations. Data travelling between the websites people
 look at and
the Tor network is unencrypted and it could be possible to identify users
if they visit sites that do not encrypt login sessions.

The programs making up the free Torpark download are small enough to
install on a USB flash memory stick allowing people to take the
 anonymising browser
with them. Before now it has been possible to configure Firefox to use Tor
and its associated identity hiding programs but Torpark puts all these
 elements
 in one package.

Hacktivisimo said that anyone using Torpark might see a slight reduction
in their browsing speed as the package of programs connect to the Tor
 network and
 scramble traffic.

The Torpark browser includes an clickable icon that lets people switch
 between anonymous and ordinary browsing.

It may also cause frustration as the regular change of net address may
make some sites think that a new user is visiting and ask once more for
 login details.

[AI] Gartner: EU Pressure May Cause Windows Vista Delay

2006-09-20 Thread Shadab
Gartner: EU Pressure May Cause Windows Vista Delay

Rather than late 2006, Gartner strongly expects Microsoft to ship Windows
Vista in Q2 2007. The analyst firm says the vendor's

conflict with the European Commission

over features in the operating system,

especially built-in security,

could cause a significant delay in a couple ways.

Either the EC will actually bar the release of Vista in the European Union
for anti-trust issues, or Microsoft will use its ongoing battle with the EC
as

an

excuse

to delay the operating system further.

Gartner says a

partial delay is a real possibility.

Perhaps volume licensing customers will get their copies so that they can
begin testing, while consumers and OEMs wait.

We think, though, that would cause more problems that it would solve, and in
the end probably not put more dollars in Microsoft's coffers. Manufacturers

and retailers, after all, are already

peeved with repeated delays

and the likelihood that they'll miss another holiday season opportunity to
capitalize on Vista. And in the long term, what would a show of weakness
like

that in the face of pressure from a non-U.S. governmental body do for
Microsoft's position? Not much.

Volume licensing customers are advised by Gartner to verify that their
current support contracts will remain in effect in the event of another
Vista delay.

[AI] Mobile Phone Can Read Books

2006-09-20 Thread Rohan
Mobile Phone Can Read Books

 By Kim Tae-gyu, Staff Reporter

Korea Times, South Korea, September 19, 2006

LG Electronics, the world's fourth-largest cell phone vendor, has added

another compelling feature to the mobile handset - reading books for the

 visually impaired.

The Seoul-based company yesterday started marketing the model, the LF1300,

through LG Telecom, the country's smallest wireless operator, at around

 400,000 won.

Only the blind, visually-impaired and dyslexic can buy the talking phone

after presenting a government certificate at sales outlets of LG Telecom.

``The LF1300 is the world's first mobile handset that is capable of

 reading

books for the print-disabled, who otherwise could not enjoy them, LG Vice

 President Cho Sung-ha said.

``This is not about making money at all but about contributing to society.

We will continue to put forth efforts to bridge the digital divide for the

 disabled, Cho said.

Users of the gadget can download approximately 300 audio books from the

Internet site of LG Sangam Library to their handsets in two ways.

One is to access the digital library's Web site (

www.lg.or.kr

) on a

 computer

specially designed for the blind to get the audio books and transfer them

 to

 cell phones.

The other is to download the digital books directly with cell phones

 through

the wireless network by touching a hot key on the LF1300 handset. Both

 methods are free of charge.

On top of its unique feature of reading books, the LF1300 is not inferior

 to

the contemporary top-line phones in both outlooks and functionalities.

The sleek 16-millimeter-thick gizmo is armed with an MP3 player and a

Bluetooth headset, which enables users to listen to the music or talks

 without a cord.

The user interface of the LF1300 is also customized for the blind,

 enabling

handset users to control it through a voice guidance system.

However, there is a hitch because the phone's internal memory of 17

megabytes is small even for a single audio book file, which takes up 80 MB

 on average.

As a result, a high-volume external memory, which is available at

electronics shops, is a must for the talking book services.

Enjoy

There's always confusion between James Hilton and John Milton. Most
of
my friends too have confusions about the writers, despite doing their
 literatures.

I can get you lost Horizon
 By Hilton, if you like.
I can send some more science fiction.
Better if you send a list of preferred books to the list. I can
 arrange
 some
and there are others who are in touch with books. I am sure you
 won't
 be
 disappointed.
I think James Hilton is still under copyright. As about not finding
 site
with relevant books, one has to look desperately for specific books
 and
 very
often you do get them, irrespective of the copyright status.
 Take care

 Hai Tara and others:

I haven't tried very many of the book sites. But, none of them
seem
 to
have relevant books. For example, I haven't found many Sci-Fi's
not
 even
stuffs like H G Wells, Isaac Asimov etc. One novel I have been
 wanting
to read in e-text form is 'Goodbye Mr. Chipps' (By James Hilton).
 This
book was written in 1935 and surely, this can't be under copyright
 any
more. Yet, I don't find this at all.

bookshare doesn't allow copyright material to the foreigners. I am
 not
 sure
if you can be a member.
It is always better before asking such questions, what your
 interests
 are.
What kind of novels do you read. What is the purpose of your
 reading
 them.
