[AI] Startup and shutdown problems
Hi friends, Since I have formatted my machine a few days ago, there seems to be a new problem. There is abnormal startup and shutdown process. When the machine starts it takes a really long time to get programs working including jaws. I'm taken into notion that the system has hung (it did hang a couple of times) but it is working fine until I have to shutdown or restart the machine. I'm required to give the shutdown or restart command twice before it is carried out. I don't understand the mystery behind the problem. Your help is deeply appreciated. [AI] Vista opens new dawn for security
Vista opens new dawn for security Dec 27, 2006 Hi-tech criminals are looking forward to the consumer release of Windows Vista, say security experts. Vista will be the big event in computer security in 2007, say experts and add that it will have a profound effect on both sides of the security world. Many organised crime gangs are already tearing the new version of Windows apart looking for ways to exploit its weaknesses, say some. Others are expecting to see Vista attacked soon after it debuts. While Microsoft's business customers have been able to buy Vista since 30 November, consumers are being forced to wait until late January 2007 to get their hands on the next version of the Windows operating system. Microsoft has said that the whole development process of the operating system has been run with better security in mind. Within Vista are several technologies that could stop many people falling victim to the most common sorts of malicious attack, said Kevin Hogan, director of security operations at Symantec. In particular, he said, the way Vista handles user accounts will limit the freedom malicious programs have to run and install themselves surreptitiously. Increasingly, said Mr Hogan, hi-tech criminals were booby-trapping benign looking webpages with code that slips through vulnerabilities in the various versions of Windows. It should also help stop people being caught out by malicious attachments on e-mail messages. "That'll deal with a lot of the current threats we are seeing," said Mr Hogan. Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at security firm F-Secure, said the warnings that these account controls display when malicious code tries to install itself will prove useful. "It'll become much more obvious when they get infected," he said. But, said Mr Hypponen, as well as stopping some of the threats hitting users, Vista is also likely to spur many hi-tech criminals to step up their research efforts and translate their old malicious wares to the new software. "None of the existing bots, backdoors, trojans in general run on Vista," said Mr Hypponen. Already security experts are seeing exploits for Vista vulnerabilities being sold on underground websites and proof-of-concept code appearing on discussion boards. Gerhard Eschelbeck, chief technology officer at security firm Webroot, said he expected the hi-tech criminals to start exploiting the many ways that Vista tries to warn people about security threats. He said it was only a matter of time before cyber criminals find a way to mimic the security warnings that Vista uses to try to trick people into installing a malicious program. "They are thinking how to attack the user directly rather than try to penetrate the applications," he said. While Vista might help many users stay safer online, many criminals would be happy targeting the tens of millions of people who own older versions of Windows, said Mr Eschelbeck. In 2007 he said he expected to see malicious code turning up on many different types of sites - many of which looked completely benign. Those behind malicious programs were also more interested in having their creations hang around longer, said Mr Eschelbeck. "The goal is to stay undetected for a long time," he said. "It's being driven by people looking for financial gain." The diversity of the hi-tech underground was also shown by the new targets many were going after, said Paul Davie, chief executive of security firm Secerno. He said many hi-tech criminals were now targeting web shops that use a database to handle orders in a bid to steal valuable information they can sell or use. Many attackers, he said, were using sophisticated techniques to squeeze information out of databases. "These attacks - examples of which include hackers exposing hundreds of thousands of credit card numbers worldwide - certainly will increase sharply in 2007," he said. "The security sector is coming to terms with the fact that it is dealing with highly financially motivated, technologically advanced and professional database http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/technology/6198121.stm Vikas Kapoor, MSN ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype ID: dl_vikas Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. [AI] Wikipedia creator turns to search
Wikipedia creator turns to search Dec 29, 2006 The creator of the Wikipedia encyclopedia is turning his attention to search engines. Jimmy Wales, the man behind the collaborative online reference work, is planning to create a "people-powered" search site. The Search Wikia project will not rely on computer algorithms to determine how relevant webpages are to keywords. Instead the results generated by the search engine will be decided and edited by humans. The project will stand apart from the Wikipedia encyclopedia but will be overseen by the Wikimedia Foundation - which is headed by Mr Wales. Like the Wikipedia, the search site will rely on a large community of members to create and run it. Announcing the project Mr Wales said it was needed because the existing search systems for the net were "broken". They were broken, he said, because they lacked freedom, community, accountability and transparency. The Search Wikia project would aim to change this and he said it would draw on the work of sites such as Nutch and Lucene which have taken a more open approach to search engines. At the moment the results returned to those using keywords on sites such as Google are generated by computers which analyse webpages to work out what they are about and how useful they are. Webpage owners use all kinds of tricks to outsmart the computer indexing systems and ensure their pages appear high up in results - even if they are not relevant to particular keywords. By contrast the relevance of results returned by the Search Wikia will be decided by the site's community of users. Those searching will also be able to edit the list of results they get. Mr Wales announced his plans for the search project before Christmas and was now recruiting people and buying hardware to get it up and running. [AI] Wireless Technology
December 28, 2006 Connect All Those Devices to Your PC, but Forget the Cables By STEPHEN C. MILLER There are few peripherals that do not connect to a computer via U.S.B. ports leading to a boom in U.S.B. hubs, which let you connect multiple devices via one port on the computer. With the spread of Wi-Fi- enabled laptops, many people are eager to untether from the desk and still use all of their peripherals. Belkin has come up with a wireless solution, the Cable-Free U.S.B. Hub. The hurdle in making a wireless hub has been in connecting all the devices together without generating interference between wireless signals, including those from other devices like cordless phones. Belkin, with a chipset developed by Wisair, has cracked the code. The transmitter connects to a U.S.B. port on a laptop, and the hub itself can be up to 30 feet away. One drawback is a limitation to just four ports, and multiple hubs cant be daisy-chained as with the wired variety. The Cable-Free Hub is priced at less than $200 at the usual electronic outlets and at www.belkin.com. As with all cutting-edge technology, the price will drop when competitors enter the market.
