2006-12-31 Thread Nikhil Jain

Dear ist,

Wishing you all a very happy, prosperous and successful new year. Though i ave
been a pasive listener in this list due to my tight schedule and preoccupation
in various works over these ays, i stil get time to check e.mail sent by the
list. I really ave learnt alot through the vibrant discussion amongst the list
members. May this list grow in strength and we get more opportunity for having
loving discussion and valuable knowledge.
I sincerely thank all of you for enriching my knowledge in the field of
technology and disability. Though there were some disturbing moments, but we
have risen above which is quite wonderfull.
Debate discussion and crisis are the haulmark of any group. That is how the
society grows and flourishes.
May you all have a blossoming and eventfull new year!
Regards.

[AI] Beyond Search: Google Specialty Services

2006-12-31 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Beyond Search: Google Specialty Services

Even people who have never opened a Web browser in their life know about
Google--but the undisputed king of search is about much more than just keywords,
text ads, and ten-per-page results.

Here's a look at some of the company's
other services
for Web users.

Alerts :
Simply enter any search term you want to monitor, choose one of five categories
(News, Blogs, Groups, Web, or Comprehensive), and set your inbox to receive
alerts once a day, once a week, or "as-it-happens". I chose the last option for
two different terms and received my first alerts about an hour later. You
can easily save or delete specific alerts, as well as change their frequency or
turn them off altogether.

Catalogs :
View images of catalog pages scanned as part of the Google Base service, which
lets people add their own information to Google's databases. Most of the
catalogs are years old, and few big-name directories are present (five-year-old
Hickory Farms and Crate and Barrel catalogs are typical). Many are from
small, regional companies, heavy on boating and fishing items, specialty foods,
and other niches. You can't order products online, either; instead you
call the toll-free number displayed prominently to the left of the catalog
pages. If only the information on the grainy, scanned pages were as easy to
read. Fans of catalog shopping will likely be disappointed with the service's
offerings.

Custom Search Engine :
Create your own search engine in your area of expertise, or use the creations
of others. If you roll your own engine, you can place it on your own site
(even customize its appearance to match that of your site), or add it to
Google's list of custom sites and invite others to suggest sites to include in
your engine. I created a search engine
about Global Positioning System (GPS) devices
in just about 15 minutes.

Directory :
This service lists sites of interest in various categories, à la mid-1990s
Yahoo, Northern Light, and Magellan. Directories seem particularly anachronistic
on Google, since keyword searching has replaced such hierarchical lists of
topics. However, Internet directories help people unfamiliar with a subject
learn more about it without having to know which specific words to search for.
In other words, if you're not sure what you're looking for, Web directories
such as this one may help you find it.

Pack :
With a single download you get a collection of free software that includes the
Google Earth 3D geo-browser, the Picasa photo organizer, a screen-saver maker,
the Mozilla Firefox browser with Google Toolbar, a six-month subscription to
Symantec Norton Antivirus 2005 Special Edition, Google Talk, the RealPlayer
media player, the Skype VoIP client, the Google Desktop utility for searching
files on your PC and/or the Web, the Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer,
Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE Personal antispyware program, Adobe Reader 7, Google
Video Player, and GalleryPlayer HD Images, which includes ten free
high-definition
images you can use as desktop backgrounds or screen savers. One problem for me
is that I already have several of those programs installed on my PC, and
the others I don't need or want. Even when I buy a new system, I prefer to
install only the applications I know I'll use. Also, PC World always advises
that you load new programs one at a time to make correcting installation
problems easy. If you download and install all of these programs at once and
something
goes wrong, you won't know where to begin to troubleshoot.

Specialized Searches :
My favorite is
U.S. Government Search ,
which lets you find information on federal government Web sites. Also offered
are searches limited to Microsoft, Apple Macintosh, Linux, and BSD (Unix)
sites.
University Search
allows you to search the sites of hundreds of colleges and universities.

Web Accelerator :
Designed specifically for broadband users, this service employs special Google
servers and caches that it creates on your own PC (separate from your browser's
cache) to speed page loads. It doesn't claim to work with all Web sites or
pages; but as you browse, the program's icon in your browser toolbar shows the
amount of time the tool has saved you in download waits. Though Web Accelerator
doesn't work with secured Web pages (those whose URLs begin with https:),
some personal information may be included in the nonencrypted pages that it
caches, so using it entails some increased security risk. You can turn the
accelerator off by clicking its icon in the system tray and choosing the 'Stop
Google Web Accelerator' option, or you can manually enter the URLs of sites
you wish not to accelerate. Likewise, you can empty the tool's cache by
clicking the 'Clear history' button on the program's Preferences screen. I
didn't
try to verify the accelerator's claims of faster browsing, and after using it
for a couple of hours in

[AI] No Rush to Adopt Vista

2006-12-31 Thread Vikas Kapoor
No Rush to Adopt Vista

Windows Vista has been
on the market
for nearly a month now, but enterprise users and industry experts agree that
Microsoft's latest and greatest OS still isn't yet ready to replace XP.

The problem is not with the software itself--by most accounts, Vista is
technically solid --
but with myriad peripheral issues that Microsoft must work out to take the pain
out of using Vista.

Microsoft Holding Off on Vista Patches

Take patching, for example. On December 12, Microsoft released an
Internet Explorer 7
fix that improved the performance of IE's phishing filter. The software had
been bogged down by Web sites with a large number of frames, and users had been
complaining.

Microsoft patched the problem for Windows XP and Server 2003 users, but not for
Vista. That update will come after the consumer release of Vista hits the
market some time in January, according to a spokeswoman for Microsoft's public
relations agency. And although Microsoft is now issuing security patches
for Vista, performance-related updates such as the phishing filter are being
handled on a case-by-case basis, she said.

Microsoft won't say why it is holding off on some Vista patches even though the
product is commercially available for business customers, but Russ Cooper,
a senior information security analyst at Cybertrust, has a theory.

"I say Microsoft never intended anybody to run Vista prior to January," he
said. "What works on Vista, beyond Office 2007?" he asked. "I'm going to Vista
... when my VPN supplier tells me that they have drivers that work, and when my
antivirus vendor tells me that they have non-beta versions that work."

Many Apps not Compatible

Cooper brings up a good point: Application compatibility is another problem for
Vista, and VPN and antivirus software are among the applications at the
top of the list that users say must work before they will move to Vista. Right
now, the most popular software in those categories, as well as other mainstream
applications many business customers use, won't be available for Vista until
after the consumer version of the operating system is
released on January 30, 2007 .

Some of the applications that still aren't compatible with Vista include IBM
Lotus Notes e-mail and collaboration suite; Cisco's and Check Point Software's
VPN clients; Intuit's accounting software QuickBooks 2006 and earlier versions;
and antivirus software from Trend Micro.

Intuit even took time in mid-December to warn QuickBooks users in a note that
they should hold off on upgrading to Vista until after the U.S. tax season
ends in April, citing compatibility with older versions of its software and
"potential reliability issues" with Vista.

IBM said Lotus Notes will support Vista by mid-2007; Lotus Notes 8, the next
version of the suite, also will be available at that time on Vista. Cisco's
VPN will support Vista some time in the first quarter of 2007.

QuickBooks, Check Point's VPN client, and Symantec and Trend Micro's antivirus
software will support Vista following the consumer release. However, in some
good news for users, McAfee already has Vista antivirus software on the market.

Even some of Microsoft's own products still don't run on Vista. SQL Server
2005, the latest version of Microsoft's database, won't be available for Vista
until after the consumer release.

Switch to Vista Inevitable

Still, while there may be some lag time in Vista adoption as users wait for
applications to catch up to the new OS, companies will eventually have to make
the switch to Vista no matter how painful it is. Most analysts predict that
enterprises will begin moving over to Vista in earnest by 2008.

"Once Vista is being shipped by OEMs on all new PCs, we won't be debating why
people should move," said Andrew Brust, chief of new technology with consulting
firm TwentySix New York. "It will be clear that they will need to do so, sooner
or later. And honestly, people can argue until they're blue in the face
about how XP is fine, but the reality is that it's five years old, technology
has changed, and a new OS is necessary."

[AI] Portal to help blind surf for jobs created

2006-12-31 Thread Ravi
Deccan Herald, India
Friday, December 29, 2006

Portal to help blind surf for jobs created

By Kalyan Ray, DH News Service

New Delhi: Thanks to the country's first job portal to be developed exclusively
for the visually challenged, the blind community in India too can surf the
Internet to search for jobs.

The yet-to-be-named portal whose beta version is doing the rounds is likely to
be launched by the second week of February, Sriram Bharatam, the chief executive
officer of Hyderabad-based Iridium Interactive, which is designing the website
with the help of NASSCOM Foundation, told Deccan Herald.

Developed using indigenous tools, the upcoming website is being considered a
key achievement in aiding the visually challenged community to organise their
lives with the power of the net.

"At the NASSCOM Foundation, we are looking at different ways to bring the
disabled people including the blind community into the mainstream. Giving them
an option to search for jobs is one," the foundation's CEO Rufina Fernandez
said.

Other NASSCOM members are developing an inexpensive "screen reader" for the
blind and developing technologies for them to operate automated teller machines
(ATMs) without assistance. An inexpensive screen reader will reduce the burden
on the employer to recruit the visually impaired as the licensing fee for
existing readers are huge.

"The new job portal is an welcome step as almost one fourth of the world's
total blind population lives in India," said Shanthi Ranganathan who heads
Enable
India, an NGO in Bangalore for the disabled community.

"Also if big business houses make their websites disabled-friendly, they will
get additional customers," she said, adding that some of the foreign business
houses have gained financially just by doing that.

The UK-based supermarket chain Tescos has increased their sales just by making
their website disabled-friendly as they too can navigate through the websites
and place orders, claimed Mr Bharatam.

However, despite having legal protection in USA, UK, Canada, Australia and New
Zealand, most of the websites in these countries are not disabled-friendly.
According to a survey carried out by an website standards magazine, among the
official websites of Australia, Canada UK, USA and India, the Indian portal
www.india.gov.in
fared the worst.

Earlier this month, US officials had shared their experiences and offered
assistance to Indian officials in a meeting in Bangalore.

Iridium too is planning to recruit about 25 visually impaired people in three
of its testing centres in Noida, Mumbai and Hyderabad. "We have already
recruited
eight and are planning to recruit more in these centres in the next three
months so that all of them are up and ready by March 2007.

They will test all our disable-friendly products before launching," said Mr
Bharatam.

OTHER PLANS

*A screen reader to help the blind operate ATMs

*Inexpensive screen readers for employers

*Making business websites disabled-friendly

*Recruiting more visually impaired

This could be because you may have too many programs in the startup. This
means that when you start your computer, all these programs start loading,
and that takes up time. Try removing some of the programs from the startup
folder.

Hi friends,

Since I have formatted my machine a few days ago, there seems to be a new
problem. There is abnormal startup and shutdown process.
When the machine starts it takes a really long time to get programs working
including jaws. I'm taken into notion that the system has hung (it did hang
a couple of times) but it is working fine until I have to shutdown or
restart the machine. I'm required to give the shutdown or restart command
twice before it is carried out. I don't understand the mystery behind the
problem.

Your help is deeply appreciated.
