Re: [AI] Using internet in laptop by connecting it to mobile viabluetooth
Dear Friend You will need to first get your mobile laptop connected. After both are connected you should go to My Bluetooth Places. Search for your mobile. On locating for the same, right click on the same. You will get the options as pair devices, dialup connection etc. Click on dialup connection follow the steps. You will need to give a number to dialup, that will depend on the ISP whose service you are using. In my case I am using Hutch and the number is *99# After you do so, there will be a new connection created, using the same you can get connected to the internet. But this will be a dialup connection not the GPRS connection. That means you will be charged as per the per call charges for the duration you are been connected. Hope this solves your problem. If you still have any problem than write to me privately, I will try my best to resolve this for you. [AI] Malware Hunts Down and Deletes MP3s
Malware Hunts Down and Deletes MP3s Low-risk worm deletes MP3s on infected PCs, spreads via removable flash drives. Jeremy Kirk, IDG News Service Thursday, August 02, 2007 5:00 AM PDT the recording industry's dream application: it hunts down and deletes MP3s on infected PCs. Security companies say the worm is only low risk, although its unusual payload could give a nasty surprise to an ardent music fan. The motivation of the hackers who created it are unclear. The authors of this worm are more likely to be teenage mischief makers than the organized criminal gangs we typically see authoring financially-motivated malware these days, said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for the security vendor Sophos PLC. As such, it's not something we would lose an awful lot of sleep over, but there are some lessons that computer users should learn to minimize the chances of infection, he said. The worm spreads via removable flash drives, reminiscent of the way viruses spread via floppy disks decades ago. That may be an attempt by the authors of the worm to bypass e-mail filters and Web gateway filters that block malicious software, Cluley said. Symantec Corp., which calls the worm W32.Deletemusic, said in an advisory that the worm copies itself to all drives on a PC. It also creates an autorun file to start itself whenever a user accesses a drive. The worm affects PCs running Windows 2000, 95, 98, Me, NT, Server 2003, XP and Vista, Symantec said. Users could disable the autorun feature in Windows that automatically launches programs on CDs or USB drives, Cluley said. It's not the first malicious software to go after music files. Two years ago, researchers saw the Nopir-B worm, which posed as a utility to make copies of DVDs. Once on a machine, it displayed an anti-piracy graphic and tried to delete MP3s and other files. Last year, a Trojan horse program called Erazer took the destructive activity a step further, wiping out MP3s as well as movies, Cluley said. Re: [AI] Problem in Orkut
Yes my friend ! The virus named VB.QG is the culprit behind this. It not only blocks you from accessing orkut and you tube, but does not allow you to install Mozilla firefox. If you don't believe me, you can type c:\heap41a in the run diolog box where this virus actually resides. There you will also come across an MP3 file which it uses whenever you try to log on to orkut. In fact you cannot delete this folder as it makes all files hidden. And, Windows itself considers it as system files so one of the processes named svchost.exe does not allow you to delete the folder completely. You can surely get reed of this virus by following these step-to-step instructions: I assume that you are using Windows XP I suggest you to read these steps before attempting to carry out the operation 1) Press CTRL+Shift+Escape to launch windows task manager. 2) Press Ctrl+Tab to go to processes tab. 3) In the Processes list view, A) select the process named as SVCHOST.EXE Note:There might be more than one Svchost.exe process in the list. You should use CTRL+Downarrow and CTRL+Space to select all the processes which are named as SVCHOST.EXE B) To end the process and to confirm the same, press: Alt+E, Y. 4) Quickly go to Run and without making any errors type: shutdown -a This is because when you end SVCHOST.EXE process, the system will automatically shut itself down giving 30 seconds to save the work in progress. When you type shutdown -a command in run, the automatic shutdown will be aboarded, and the system will not turn off. Remember you should execute this command with in 30 seconds after you end svchost.exe process. 5) delete all files that are inside heap41a folder. There is one alternative solution in case you don't like to do all these manually if you can copy a batch script which I have prepared below. Procedure: 1. Copy the batch script to notepad excluding the top and the bottom lines (see below) Top line:--- taskkill /im svchost.exe /f shutdown -a del /q c:\heap41a\*.* exit Bottom line:--- 2. Save it in notepad A) in the filename field, type: ABC.bat, including the quotation mark. (With quotations, not without quotations) 3) Execute the file, and you are done with it. If you still have problem, do not format the disk, instead, try deleting heap41a folder somehow. - Original Message - From: Abdul Razique Khan [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Thursday, August 02, 2007 3:23 AM Subject: [AI] Problem in Orkut Hello Friends, Everytime I try to go to www.orkut .com an error occurs which says Orkut is banned you fool, the administrater did'nt write this programGuess who did. He described a multi-step attack that could be used to scan corporate networks for data or vulnerabilities. But at the heart of the attack is a 1996 paper by Princeton researchers showing how a Java applet could be used to access systems on a victim's network. It's one of the few things that's actually come back from the dead, Kaminsky said. The fundamental problem, according to Kaminsky, is in the way that Web browser software decides how to trust other computers. This decision is based on the Internet domain name of the computer, and that DNS (Domain Name System) information can be misused, Kaminsky said. It's a binding problem, he said during an interview after his talk. They assume a value is not changing, but the attacker can change it whenever he chooses. For the past year, security researchers like Kaminsky have increasingly warned how flaws in the security model of Internet applications could be misused to give attackers access to PC resources or other Web sites being visited by the victim. In February, security researcher Robert Hansen showed how a DNS-based attack called anti-DNS pinning could be used to give an attacker access to any data indexed by Google Desktop. Hansen said that while Kaminsky's talk may not have disclosed previously unknown vulnerabilities, it's probably one of the coolest implementations of this type of attack. In his talk, Kaminsky described how a malicious Web site could interact with a browser and -- following a complex chain of back-and-forth data requests -- ultimately gain access to other resources on the Web surfer's network. Attackers would be able to access any resource available to the victim running the browser, he said. If you can reach it, so can the bad guy. He plans to post further details of his attack on his Doxpara.com Web site later this week. In Kaminsky's scenario, an attacker would use a proxy server that would send data to the browser, ultimately using Adobe Systems Inc.'s Flash multimedia software to trick the browser into trusting the outside Web site as if it was a local network resource, say a printer. The proxy gets to update the browser to speak the necessary flash to service the bytes being sent to the attacker, he said. http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,135383-pg,1/article.html Vikas Kapoor, MSN Id:[EMAIL PROTECTED], Yahoo+Skype Id: dl_vikas, Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. [AI] Microsoft Updates Mac Office File Converter
Microsoft Updates Mac Office File Converter Beta 2 of Office 2007 file converter lets Mac Office users work with PowerPoint presentations. Gregg Keizer, Computerworld Thursday, August 02, 2007 6:00 AM PDT 07 file converter, allowing Mac Office users to now work with PowerPoint presentations. The latest beta, version 0.2 of the Microsoft Office Open XML File Format Converter for Mac, adds PowerPoint presentation (.pptx), show (.ppsx) and template (.potx) files to the Word documents it could translate out the gate when it first appeared in May. Other changes to the beta include improved conversion of Word documents that contain inline or linked graphics, WMF/EMF-formatted images, SmartArt and tracked edits in the header and footer. It also can now convert Word 2007 files that contain bibliography and citation fields or include complex tables. Intended as a stop-gap, the stand-alone converter will be replaced with an add-in to Microsoft's existing Mac Office suites six to eight weeks after the company launches Office 2008 for Mac. Office 2008 for Mac, which Microsoft still expect to release sometime before the end of the year, will use the same default Open XML file formats as Windows Office 2007. The 2008 edition, which will be the first written by Microsoft for Intel-based Macs and the last to support older machines running PowerPC processors, will also use a variation of Office 2007's Ribbon-like interface. The 0.2 file converter works with Office 2004 for Mac 11.3.4 or later, or Office v. X for Mac 10.1.9 or later, and can be downloaded from the Mactopia Web site http://www.computerworld.com/ www.computerworld.comFor more enterprise computing news, visit Computerworld http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,135360-pg,1/article.html Vikas Kapoor, MSN Id:[EMAIL PROTECTED], Yahoo+Skype Id: dl_vikas, Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. Apart from all other good features, like stop watch (which is fully compatible with jaws), and continuous displaying the speed of your download /upload in the systray,it also has the capability to alert you when your data limit accedes (you can define your data limit in the option tab according to your convenience). [AI] Please, please suggest an appropriate mobile.
Hello Dearest A I members, My name is Rajesh Rastogi, a new member of the AI list. I stay in Lucknow and am pursuing B comm. I look forward to my contributions with whatever little computer knowledge I have and also receiving guidance from the stalwarts in this list. Can I request you all to please help me by suggesting an appropriate mobile which works with the talks software. I'm quite ignorant about the various and confusing models available in the market but I'm very, very clear about the features that I want. Since many of you are using mobiles and have an experience with different models, I request you all to plese guide me. My budget for the same is more or less 13k ( excluding Talks) and the features that I'm looking for are as follows: 1. I don't want to pay for unwanted features like camera, music, video, and other multimedia features which I'm not going to use. The aesthetics of the device and multimedia features are not a priority at all. 2. I'm looking for data-centric functions that are usually bundled in PDAs like those meant to help with personal information management functions like sending and receiving e-mails, reading and writing text documents, web surfing, address book accessibility, works as a note taker etc. I don't want the in-built tiny QWERTY keyboards since I would be buying a blue tooth keyboard separately so that, as I mentioned, I can use the device as a note taker as well. I'm sure many of you would be able to relate to my requirements and the non-essentials. Would one of the Nokia E-series be an appropriate choice? And if you think I can't get the above mentioned features in the given budget, then please suggest a good mobile available in the market that comes as close to the requirements at this price, like the Nokia N-series, if I'm not mistaken! And Which I can connect to my laptop for instance using Airtel's internet connection through the GPRS enabled handset and avail of the above mentioned requirements. ( Please do keep in mind that it should be compatible with Talks which I shall be buying from Saksham) Please, plese guide and share your experiences with the models that you are acquainted with, Looking forward to all your kind assistance and Thanking you all very much, Warm regards, Rajesh Rastogi. Re: [AI] Fw: India: New career options for visually challenged.
Dr.u.n.sinha narain I believe that you are in Uttar Pradesh kindly check out the real reasons for the problem at Varanasi and see how you can help rehabilitate these people if you have not already done so. Organisations can do something but we as individuals also have a responsibility. Lets not forget this before pointing fingers at others. Also it is training in massage therepy and other professions that have stopped such incidents from happening regularly and all over the country. Correct me if I am wrong but I am told that Varanasi does not have any training or other facilities for the Visually challenged why do you not organise with the help of others from Uttar Pradesh some regular training, rehabilitation courses, personality development and courses on rights. Kochi is doing it regularly and systematically.I am sure the rest of us will be happy to share our expertise if you need it. There are many miles to go for an equal society and we need to take the steps. No point in sitting at your desk and writing emails if you cant back it up with action. Some 50 visually challenged people have undergone training in therapeutic massage since the Blind Relief Association, New Delhi, started a course in collaboration with the Vandana Luthra Curls and Curves (VLCC) Institute three years ago. It is a vocational course mainly aimed at imparting scientific training to the blind in massaging and body therapy techniques to help them become self-reliant, says A David, the project manager of the Association who designed the course, open for both men and women who passed eighth standard with science as one of the subjects. Covering relaxation and therapeutic massage, pressure point massage and aromatherapy, the three-month course is recognised by the VLCC, which imparts training to the instructors and awards certificate to the students. Four batches have passed out since the course was started in 2004, and while some 15 visually impaired students are working independently, several have opened their own massage parlours, providing jobs to others, says Rampal Singh, who is working as an instructor. The Association is also providing self-employment and placement assistance.
