[AI] skype virus

2007-09-15 Thread firoz
Skype has learned that a computer virus called W32/Ramex.A is affecting
users of Skype for Windows. Users whose computers are infected with this
virus
will send a chat message to other Skype users asking them to click on a web
link that can infect the computer of the person who receives the message.

Please note that Skype users ONLY become infected after they have downloaded
the link and run the malicious software. The chat message, of which there
are
several versions, is cleverly written and may appear to be a legitimate chat
message, which may fool some users into clicking on the link.

Skype has been in contact with the leading antivirus software companies
about this worm and currently FSecure,
Kaspersky
lab ,
Symantec
and Spyware Terminator have already updated their antivirus products to
detect and remove the worm.

Here's a more detailed look at the situation for those who understand
techier talk:

list of 1 items
. When a Skype user receives the chat message - either from their Skype
contacts or users not on their contact list - it includes an internet link.
Instead
of a .jpg image that it seems to point to, the link actually leads to a
virus file. By clicking on the link, the Windows Run/Save dialog box will
pop up,
asking for permission to save or run a .scr file. This is the virus file and
should not be downloaded or run.
list end

If the user accepts the file, however, their Windows PC will be infected
with the w32/Ramex.A virus. The worm uses Skype's public Application
Program
Interface (API) to access the PC.

There are two ways to get rid of the worm: the normal way and the techhead
way. Most users should NOT attempt to edit their computer's registry
manually.
For most people, downloading and/or updating their anti-virus software, and
scanning their computer to detect and remove the worm, is the way to go.

Expert users only expert users who know what they're doing can also remove
the worm manually. OR Download new version of Symantac or Kaspersky lab or
Spyware terminator or FSecure

list of 8 items
1. Restart the PC in safe mode
2. Run regedit
3. Go to HKLM/software/ microsoft/ windows/currentv ersion/runonce find
entry with mshtmldat32. exe. Delete this entry.
4. Go to Windows\System32 directory and delete following files:
wndrivs32.exe, mshtmldat32. exe, winlgcvers.exe, sdrivew32.exe
5. Go to windows/system32/ drivers/etc
6. Find file hosts
7. Open it with notepad, ctrl+a and delete all entries (this will resume
your antivirus updates), save, close.
8. Restart the PC.
list end

Research focuses on software programs for the visually impaired

By Daniel Gross

Towson professor helps blind

A Towson University professor's research is changing the way blind people
use the Internet. Jonathan Lazar, professor and director of computer and
information
sciences, has been conducting research with the National Federation of the
Blind to change Web design.

In Lazar's research, 100 blind or visually impaired Internet users
volunteered to document all of the frustrations they encountered while using
the World
Wide Web.

This is one of the largest studies of blind computer users ever undertaken,
according to Lazar.

Most studies have only five to seven volunteers, he said.

Lazar found that the volunteers had many frustrating concerns.

Most of the problems found for blind users were technically easy to solve,
Lazar said. Will it take a lot of time? Yes. But technically it is easy.

There are a number of software programs for blind people to use the Internet
such as Jaws and Window-Eyes.

These programs use audio technology and are known as screen readers, said
Lazar. They are strictly using audio.

These programs help users navigate Web sites by reading through all the
material on the site. For example, when browsing through a Web site, while
having
a screen reader program on the computer, the program will read off whatever
information is in the heading of the site and then list each of the
following
links to the user.

Essentially it reads any text and backend code, said Lazar.

Lazar said that one of the problems with the Internet use among the blind
stems from Web developer's faulty designs. He said that Web developer's
leave
out descriptions for each link that screen readers would normally speak

Some pages are misleading, while others don't work at all, Lazar said.

The study found that the Web developers for many sites do not label links in
a way that screen reader programs can easily communicate to a blind person.

Lazar said this is an easy fix to correct for those Web sites, but it does
take time. For example, when tabbing to different links and boxes on a Web
page,
a computer user might highlight an image on the site, but instead of
describing what the image is, it might say, click here when selected.

This just doesn't do you any good, Lazar said.

He said it is all a matter of spreading awareness to the Web developers.
Lazar, the NFB, and numerous other organizations are working toward training
Web
masters.

We need the Web masters to spread the word, Lazar said.

Lazar said he hopes his conclusion of his research is working and that Web
developers will see the need for better design and coding in Web sites.

Not all are convinced that accessibility is important, Lazar said. The
key is informing people.

Govt plans insurance scheme for disabled

Sreelatha Menon / New Delhi September 14, 2007

May implement the Rs 2,400 crore programme this fiscal.

While the social security Bill for the unorganized sector may take a long
time in becoming a reality, the disabled in the country may get their own
 insurance

scheme funded by a unique corpus soon.

The disabled who have been denied insurance cover by companies all these
years stand to get insurance as a right once the scheme is in place this
 year.

The source of the funding of the insurance scheme is also unique.

It is to be funded through a Rs 2400 crore corpus that has accrued to the
Ministry for Social Justice and Empowerment from public sector banks.

These banks, which had made a profit while rounding off their accounts,
 had
been asked by the Supreme Court to spend the money for public good
 specifically

for the disabled after a PIL three years ago.

The ministry, which has started receiving the money, plans to implement
 the
insurance scheme in this financial year using the funds.

Interest from this corpus would be used for various disability welfare
schemes and the insurance scheme will benefit from this fund, officials
 said.

The National Trust for the Welfare of Persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy,
Mental retardation and Multiple disabilities and the Chief Commissioner
 for
 Persons

with Disabilities are working out the social security cum insurance cover
 with various insurance companies.

A three-member team of experts, including Pradeep Ghosh of the NGO Oasis
Bhopal, Dr T V Ramesh of Insurance brokering firm Alegion in Chennai, and
 Shyamala,

director of Adi (formely Spastic Society of Northern India, has been
 working
on the insurance scheme with the actuaries of insurance companies for the

 last four months.

Pradeep Ghosh, one of the experts working out details of the insurance
scheme with actuaries, said it was likely to be implemented on a pilot
 basis
 in one

or two districts to begin with and would be spread out to the rest of the
country in phases. Ghosh added that it was a big achievement for the
 disabled

as they had been denied insurance cover by all companies so far.

Ghosh himself an Ashoka social entrepreneur who was formerly with the IT
sector said the insurance companies came forward for a
 Governemnt-supported
 insurance

scheme after disability activists and lawyer Colin Gonsalvez threatened
 last
year to move the court on the denial of insurance cover to disabled.

Poonam Natarajan Chairperson of the National Trust said that the scheme
 was
being processed and she would not be in a position to give details now.

However sources said that the insurance cover would later incorporate
products like endowment policies which would provide pensions to the
 disabled.

The two national agencies on disability would be sending a proposal of
demands to the insurance companies and the scheme is likely to be
 implemented in

 this financial year, sources said.

Hi
Reading through this article, there wasn't anything dramatic or revealing
which was not known and hence would make any difference to us, as claimed,
following the research.

The solution suggested is also well known and is of common knowledge.
