[AI] Multiple page scanning.

2007-09-21 Thread moiz tundawala
Hello friends.
I use an HP scanner to scan books and other relevant materials. I wish
to do a multiple page scan. But when I'm through with it and try to
convert the text into word, only the first page is converted. The
select all pages option is not working. I did a control A, but it
failed too. If I then use the go to command in the edit menu and move
to the tenth page say, then that particular page gets converted. Is
there a way out? I did try to download omnipage converter, but it did
not help. I use office 2000.
I did put in a query on the list. But as always, I personally never
seem to get satisfactory answers. May be, my questions are pretty
stupid.
Please help, it is important.
Moiz.

Re: [AI] Voice dictation, good deal

2007-09-21 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi Haresh,

If you need to use J-say, then you need to use the professional version of
dragon naturally speaking. As regards the microphone, that is just vendor
speak. I have tested the microphone that comes with dragon naturally
speaking and can clearly make out the difference between using that
microphone and my current special microphone.

If cost is an issue, then you could consider using the speech recognition
with Microsoft windows Vista and a product called J-vist.

Hi Pranav
The professional version costs 4 times more. What he demonstrated was the
preffered one. He mentioned along with the package what comes along is a
good quality noise cancellation mic.

2007-09-21 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi A reach,

1. The wireless microphone has a built in soundcard. For that matter, any
wired microphone that is designed for speech recognition will have its own
soundcard.

2. If you want to use a regular microphone, then you would need to use a USB
digital sound converter.

Please see http://www.emicrophones.com.

Hi Pranav
What I was told was that the chordless mic uses the USB port which comes
with a built in soundcard. However, the wired microphone uses the regular
mic jack.

[AI] sentiment on the computer screen

2007-09-21 Thread rambabu adikesavalu
Hai Everyone,
the following article that appeared in The Hindu's
Opinion page on 19th sep. is very interesting!!
Sentiment on the computer screen: saying it with
‘emoticons’
Carnegie Mellon University, from where it
spread, celebrates 25th
anniversary of the ‘smiley face’ today

For sentiments that would be difficult to convey
Have become integral to personal exchanges

PITTSBURGH: It was a serious contribution to the
electronic lexicon.
  :-)
  Twenty-five years ago, Carnegie Mellon
University Professor Scott E.
Fahlman says, he was the first to use three
keystrokes — a colon followed
by a hyphen and a parenthesis — as a horizontal
“smiley face” in a
  computer message.
To mark the anniversary on Wednesday, Professor
Fahlman and colleagues are
starting a student contest for innovation in
technology-assisted,
  person-to-person communication. The Smiley
Award, sponsored by Yahoo,
  carries a $500 cash prize.
Language experts say the smiley face and other
emotional icons, known as
emoticons, have given people a concise way in
e-mail and other electronic
messages of expressing sentiments that otherwise
would be difficult to
  convey.
Professor Fahlman posted the emoticon in a
message to an online electronic
bulletin board at 11-44 a.m. on September 19,
1982, during a discussion
about the limits of online humour and how to
denote comments meant to be
  taken lightly.
“I propose the following character sequence for
joke markers: :-),” he
  wrote. “Read it sideways.”
The suggestion gave computer users a way to
convey humour or positive
feelings with a smile — or the opposite
sentiments by reversing the
  parenthesis to form a frown.
Carnegie Mellon said Professor Fahlman’s smileys
spread from its campus to
  other universities, then businesses and
eventually around the world as the
  Internet gained popularity.
“I’ve never seen any hard evidence that the :-)
sequence was in use before
my original post, and I’ve never run into anyone
who actually claims to
have invented it before I did,” Professor
Fahlman wrote on the
university’s Web page dedicated to the smiley
face. “But it’s always
possible that someone else had the same idea —
it’s a simple and obvious
  idea, after all.”
Variations, such as the “wink” that uses a
semicolon, emerged later. And
today people can hardly imagine using computer
chat programs that do not
  translate keystrokes into colourful graphics,
said Ryan Stansifer, a
computer science Professor at the Florida
Institute of Technology. “Now we
have so much power, we don’t settle for a
colon-dash-paren,” he said. “You
want the smiley face, so all these chatting
softwares have to have them.”
“It has been fascinating to watch this
phenomenon grow from a little
message I tossed off in 10 minutes to something
that has spread all around
the world,” Professor Fahlman was quoted as
saying in a university
statement. “I sometimes wonder how many millions
of people have typed
these characters, and how many have turned their
heads to one side to view
a smiley, in the 25 years since this all
started.”
Amy Weinberg, a University of Maryland linguist
and computer scientist,
said emoticons such as the smiley were
“definitely creeping into the way,
both in business and academia, people
communicate.” She added: “In terms
of things that language processing does, you
have to take them into
account. If you’re doing almost anything... and
you have a sentence that
says ‘I love my boss’ and then there’s a smiley
face, you better not take
  that seriously.”
Emoticons reflect the likely original purpose of
language — to enable
people to express emotion, said Clifford Nass, a
Professor of
  communications at Stanford University. The
emotion behind a written
sentence may be hard to discern because emotion
is often conveyed through
  tone of voice, he said.
“What emoticons do is essentially provide a
mechanism to transmit emotion
when you don’t have the voice,” he said. In some
ways they give people
“the ability not to think as hard about the
words they’re using.” — AP

For that matters, you can also save the file in rich text format (.rtf).
This can save mutch (not all) formatting of the document (smile).

Hello,
Just save the file with plane text format (.txt).
This way, you will lose the formatting of the text, but your 12 pages
will become readable (smile).

It will definetly work unless your unreadable 12 pages are in image
format rather than in text format (smile).

[AI] Intel to bring Wi-Fi, Wi-Max together for faster mobility

Sci. & Tech.
Intel to bring Wi-Fi, Wi-Max together for faster mobility

San Francisco, Sept. 21 (PTI): World's biggest chipmaker Intel Corporation on
Thursday said it is developing an integrated module, which would allow quick
data transfer while on the move, with plans to launch it next year.

"We are developing an integrated Wi-Fi/Wi-Max module, a single module that has
both capabilities, that will be available for laptops and ultra-mobile devices
next year," Intel's President and CEO Paul Otellini said at the Intel Developer
Forum here.

Next year, the company would come out with an optimised Penryn microprocessor
which would be fitted with Wi-Fi and Wi-Max.

Otellini said with notebook computers likely to overtake desktops in volume
sales in the next couple of years, the new technology would bring in a
seamlessly
integrated global network.

"We all expect to be connected everywhere. In fact, it is right from many
perspectives... Mobility has a lot of room to improve," he said, adding that the
world needed new devices, new services and new products.

The contractual commitment today suggest that 150 million people will be
covered through Wi-Max in 2008, principally in the North America, 750 million by
2010 and 1.3 billion in 2012.

"Interestingly, though, I think the future of ultra mobility is a lot closer
than we think," Otellini said.

Talking about India, Otellini said there was no plans to set up a manufacturing
plant in India as of now, despite the booming market and introduction of
a new liberalised semiconductor policy.

"There is no change in what has been announced by Intel Board Chairman Craig
Barrett during his recent visit to India," he said on the sidelines of the
forum.

During his visit to India earlier this month, Intel's Chairman Barrett had said
that the delay on the part of the Indian government in announcing the
semi-conductor
policy had forced the chipmaker to decide on setting up facilities in China and
Vietnam.

"Barrett was in India recently. He had said about that. We

A wild suggestion, which I often do ---you can select the whole document
press alt+v, select taskpain and then press escape. Don't ask me how it
works, but in my case it worked very often.

With the fast accelerating popularity of voice over
Internet protocol (VoIP) and broadband, there are
zillions of products that strive to deliver a
satisfactory
user experience.
How? With the help of a simple connection via the USB
port of your laptop or computer to make handsfree
Internet phone calls over either the instant messenger
or VoIP communication platforms.
Polycom Communicator is a well-formed handsfree
speaker-cum-mic device that connects to the PC via a
USB, allowing for trouble-free VoIP calls. One just
needs to plug the device into an available USB port on
your computer.
Compatible with the Windows XP (lacks support for Macs
and Linux), the Communicator is ready for use with any
software that uses standard Windows sound
calls. It can also act as a sound card for PC games
and is a decent microphone for recording and listening
to audio.
Polycom seems to have added an extra
auto-echo-cancellation into the Communicator, which
reportedly allows smooth voice transfer to and fro. In
practice,
while we did experience clear, room-filling audio that
was free of echoes and feedback (with only the
occasional voice delay), people on the other end
of our VoIP calls reported differing experiences.
Some enjoyed equally crisp sound; others could hear
nothing but muffled sounds, even after increasing the
volume and testing the Communicator at different
times of day. But the best aspect of the Polycom
Communicator is the freedom the speakerphone provides.

There's no need to frantically look for your headset
and put it on when a call comes in. For those who
still want their headsets, there's a standard 3.5
mm headphone socket too. Polycom's Communicator is
priced at Rs 8,195.
The D-Link too has announced the launch of D-Link
DPH-10U, that too plugs directly into the USB port of
any windows compatible desktop PC or notebook PC.

D-Link's speakerphone, too, is an USB phone handset
equipped with a regular dialling keypad and features
few special function keys, a built-in speaker and
integrated microphone.
The D-link is also fully compatible with Microsoft's
NetMeeting, MSN Messenger Service, Yahoo Messenger,
and other popular VoIP services for Windows XP/2000
environment.
Other features of D-Link DPH-10U USB VoIP phone
include an integrated speaker and microphone, and
there is no need for an external power adaptor as it
draws
power from USB port itself, hardware audio controller
for effective echo cancellation and noise reduction,
full duplex support and facility to record the
conversation directly on host PC's hard drive by
simply the press of a button on the handset. The
D-Link DPH-10U USB VoIP phone is available at an
estimated
price of Rs 1,175.
Peripherals manufacturer Logitech too has a few
impressive VoIP audio gear. For example, the PC-based
speakers from Logitech, the Z-5500. A basic Plug and
Play affair and you are ready to work with both
Windows XP/2000 and Mac OS X environments.
But in case, your computer has a high-end soundcard
then you are better off with a conventional non-USB
headset. When making long calls, a headset with
built-in
microphone proves comfortable. The premium USB Headset
350 is reasonably comfortable and has a sound quality
that is hard to find on VoIP headsets. At
around Rs 17,00 it represents great value as well.
