[AI] Off-topic: Tips to manage difficult situation

2007-11-02 Thread harish
Hi All
Got this from our member. Seems interesting.

1.) If you've got an itch in your throat, scratch
 your ear.
When the nerves in the ear get stimulated,
they create a reflex in the
throat that causes a muscle spasm, which cures the
 itch.
2.) Having trouble hearing someone at a party or on
 the phone?
Use your right ear...it's better at picking up
 rapid speech.
But, the left is better at picking up music
 tones.
3.) If you need to relieve yourself BADLY, but
 you're not anywhere near a
 bathroom, fantasize about RELATIONS.
That preoccupies your brain and distracts it. ( If
 you fantasize about
illicit relations, it works even better )
4.) Next time the doctor's going to give you an
 injection, COUGH a the
 needle is going in.
The cough raises the level of pressure in your
 spinal canal, which limits
the pain sensation as it tries to travel to your
 brain.
5.) Clear a stuffed nose or relieve sinus pressure
 by pushing your tongue
against the roof of your mouth...then pressing a
 finger between your
 eyebrows.
Repeat that for 20 seconds...it causes the vomer
 bone to rock, which loosens
your congestion and clears you up.
6.) If you ate a big meal and you're feeling full
as you go to sleep, lay
 on your left side.
That'll keep you from suffering from acid
 reflux...it keeps your stomach
lower than your oesophagus, which will help keep
 stomach acid from sliding
 up your
 throat.
7.) You can stop a toothache by rubbing ice on the
back of your hand, on the
webbed area between your thumb and index finger.
The nerve pathways there stimulate a part of the
 brain that blocks pain
 signals from your mouth.

8.) If you get all messed up on liquor, and the room
 starts spinning, put
 your hand on something stable.
The reason: Alcohol dilutes the blood in the part of
 your ear called the
 copula, which regulates balance.
Putting your hand on something stable gives your
 brain another reference
point, which will help make the world stop spinning.
9.) Stop a nose bleed by putting some cotton on
 your upper
gums...right behind the small dent below your
 nose...and press against it
 hard.
Most of the bleeding comes from the cartilage wall
 that
divides the nose, so pressing there helps get it to
 stop.

10.) Nervous ? Slow your heart rate down by blowing
 on your thumb.
The vagus nerve controls your heart rate, and you
 can calm it down by
 breathing.

11.) Need to breathe underwater for a while ???
Instead of taking a huge breath, HYPERVENTILATE
 before you go under, by
taking a bunch of short breaths.
That'll trick your brain into thinking it has more
 oxygen, and buy you about
 10 extra seconds.
12.) You can prevent BRAIN FREEZE by pressing your
 tongue flat against the
roof of your mouth, covering as much surface area as
 possible.
Brain freeze happens because the nerves in the roof
 of your mouth get
extremely cold, so your brain thinks your whole body
 is cold. It compensates
 by overheating.
..which causes your head to hurt. By warming up the
 roof of your mouth,
you'll chill your brain and feel better.

13.) If your hand falls asleep, rock your head
 from side to side.
That'll wake your hand or arm up in less than a
 minute.
Your hand falls asleep because of the nerves in your
 neck compressing. ..so
loosening your neck is the cure.
If your foot falls asleep, that's governed by nerves
 lower in the body, so
you need to stand up and walk around.

14.) Finally, this one's totally USELESS, but a
 nice trick.
Have someone stick their arm out to the side,
 straight, palm down. Press
down on his wrist with two fingers.
He'll resist, and his arm will stay horizontal.
Then, have him put his foot on a surface that's half
 an inch off the ground,
like a stack of magazines, and do the trick again.
 Because his spine
 position
is thrown off, his arm will fall right to his side,
 no matter how much he
 tries to resist.
15.) Got the hiccups? Press thumb and second finger
 over your eyebrows
until the hiccups are over - usually shortly.

16.) Hiccups can also be stopped by bending over and
 drinking water from the
opposite side of the glass. Tried and
 testedit really works.
Would it not be just perfect if there was also a way
 that could make one
 remember all these !!!

 Hi Feeroz
Virus attacks are also undertaken using image files like Jpeg files. So,
first save it and later open if it seems a genuine file.
Have you changed your anti virus programme lately?

Sir,
I've followed your instructions. But, when I'm clicking on any link, the
page opens in Mozilla Fire Fox instead of IE., which means, still the
default browser is Fire fox. What to do?

Expecting a solution,

[AI] World's smallest radio fits in the palm of the hand...of an ant

Single carbon nanotube is fully functional radio, receiving music over standard
radio bandwidth

Harnessing the electrical and mechanical properties of the carbon nanotube, a
team of researchers has crafted a working radio from a single fiber of that
material, according to Eurekalert, the news service of the American Association
for the Advancement of Science.

Fixed between two electrodes, the vibrating tube successfully performed the
four critical roles of a radio--antenna, tunable filter, amplifier and
demodulator--to
tune in a radio signal generated in the room and play it back through an
attached speaker.

Functional across a bandwidth widely used for commercial radio, the tiny device
could have applications far beyond novelty, from radio-controlled devices
that could flow in the human bloodstream to highly efficient, miniscule, cell
phone devices.

Developed at the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Center of Integrated
Nanomechanical Systems, a research team led by Alex Zettl of the University of
California at Berkeley announced the findings online on Oct. 31, 2007
(http://pubs.acs.org/journals/nalefd/index.html). The findings are scheduled to
be
printed in Nano Letters in November.

This breakthrough is a perfect example of how the unique behavior of matter in
the nanoworld enables startling new technologies, says Bruce Kramer, a
senior advisor for engineering at NSF and the officer overseeing the center's
work. The key functions of a radio, the quintessential device that heralded
the electronic age, have now been radically miniaturized using the mechanical
vibration of a single carbon nanotube.

The source content for the first laboratory test of the radio was Layla, by
Derek and the Dominos, followed soon after by Good Vibrations by the Beach
Boys.

One of the primary goals for the center is to develop minuscule sensors that
can communicate wirelessly, says Settle. A key issue is how to integrate
individual
molecular-scale components together into a system that maintains the nanometer
scale. The nanoradio achieves this by having one molecular structure, the
nanotube, simultaneously perform all critical functions, he adds.

The new device works in a manner more similar to the vacuum tubes from the
1930s than the transistors found in modern radios. In the new radio, a single
carbon fiber a few hundred nanometers (billionths of a meter) long, and only a
few molecules thick, stands glued to a negatively charged base of tungsten
that acts as a cathode. Roughly one millionth of a meter directly across from
the base lies a positively charged piece of copper that acts as an anode.

Power in the form of streaming electrons travels from an attached battery
through the cathode, into the nanotube, and across a vacuum to the anode via a
field-emission tunneling process.

The field emission process could be likened to a runner jumping across a
ditch; you only make it across if you have enough speed, i.e. energy, to begin
with, says Zettl. So electrons jump the physical gap from cathode to anode
when you supply enough energy to the device from the battery.

The stream of electrons along the nanotube changes when a radio wave encoded
with information--simply a wave of photons that travels in a controlled
manner--washes
across the tube and causes it to resonate. This mechanical action is what
amplifies and demodulates, or decodes, the radio signal.

Returning to Zettl's runner analogy, the vibrating nanotube is akin to a ditch
with a constantly changing width. Just as the runner's chances of making
the leap depend on how far the gap is, the chances of electrons making the leap
depend on the distance of the nanotube tip from the anode.

This coupling of the mechanical waving motion of the nanotube to the success
rate of electrons jumping the gap is key to the functioning of the radio,
says Zettl. What emerges from the anode is then the information signal, which
can be transferred to additional amplifiers and a speaker to reveal the
originally encoded music or any other data.

By permanently lengthening or shortening the nanotube, a modification resulting
from sending a short-lived larger-than-normal electrical current through
the device, the researchers were able to control the frequency of the radio
signal that the device could receive.

The researchers believe it would be easy to produce such nanotube radios for
receiving signals in the 40-400 megahertz range, a range within which most
FM radio broadcasts fall.

The researchers fine tune the nanoradio to a frequency, akin to a channel, by
using the electrostatic field between the cathode and anode to tighten or
loosen the nanotube, a process the researchers relate to the tightening or
loosening of a string on a guitar. According to Zettl, the sensitivity of the
nanotube radio can be enhanced by attaching an external

Google makes friends with network sites to battle Facebook

(GUARDIAN NEWS SERVICE)

By Jemima Kiss and Richard Wray

Google on Thursday night teamed up with MySpace and Bebo to battle against
Facebook for a larger share of the booming social networking market.

Google has signed up MySpace, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, and Bebo, a
favourite among teenagers, to its new OpenSocial system, which aims to link
together services on some of the most popular websites.

It has also signed up business networking service Linkedin, one of Asia's
favourite social networks Friendster and its own Orkut network, which is the
market
leader in Brazil.

Google has been searching for ways to counter the phenomenal growth of Facebook
and last week lost out on a chance to take a stake in the business. Microsoft
secured the 1.6% shareholding in a deal that valued the three-year-old
technology firm at $15bn.

The OpenSocial network will provide a standard software kit for developers of
applications such as games, video players and photo albums, which all sit
inside social networks. The kit will allow their applications to work across
multiple websites.

Facebook has successfully exploited the popularity of applications, not least
Scrabulous, an online version of Scrabble. The site offers more than 7,000
tools, mostly built by independent developers and companies, that users can add
to their profile pages for free, encouraging them to spend more time on
the site and offering a promotional platform that supports other web companies.
If users spend more time on a site or return more often it increases the
site's potential for advertisers.

By opening up part of its code to allow developers to build applications,
Facebook stole a march on MySpace, which had banned several widgets from its
site.
But Facebook applications cannot be used on other sites.

Bebo is a favourite of UK teenagers, with an estimated 10.9 million people
using the site in the UK every month. It offers applications such as the photo
gallery Slide, but the new platform is expected to provide a wave of new
applications across Bebo and a dozen other partner sites.

Bebo's UK-based president Joanna Shields, who joined the company from Google,
described OpenSocial as a positive step in the right direction.

Developers and social networks have an important, symbiotic relationship, the
success of which depends on developers not having to replicate the work they
do to bring their innovations in front of the largest possible

Hi,

Go into properties on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop, or you can
open Internet Explorer and then go into tools menu and arrow down to
internet options and activate it. In the dialog box that opens, go to the
programs tab and tab to a check box that reads Internet Explorer should
check to see whether it is the default browser check box and check it. You
can press shift + tab four times after reaching the programs tab to get to

Jaipur, Oct.31 (ANI): The newspapers keep one posted with the latest
developments around you and also the world over. The blind have to depend
on
someone to tell them the news. They need not do so any more, thanks to
  Jitendra
  Bhargva of Jaipur.
Jitendra, a blind himself, is publishing Braille Newspaper. The
fortnightly
paper is in high demand in different parts of the country.
Working as the newspaper's publisher and editor, Jitendra says that he is
  making
an attempt to facilitate newspaper reading for those cannot see.
I decided to publish the newspaper thinking there should be a newspaper
  for the
blind too. They should not be left behind in any field. Although it was
not
possible printing it daily, I managed to publish it fortnightly, said
  Bhargava.

The newspaper, believed to be India's first Braille newspaper, is
published
  with
a team of five. They collect useful news items from various sources
including
various websites and local newspaper to publish India's only Braille
newspaper
  for the blind.
Bhargava says that it was difficult to start the newspaper. But with the
  passage
of time, the newspaper has been receiving support. . Presently, the paper
receives support from its subscribers. The newspaper also receives
feedback
through phone calls and letters to the editor.
The content of the newspaper keeps changing as per their readers' choice.
It
carries positive and informative stories instead of crime or political
  happenings.
We keep the blind people informed with all major developments. If there
is a
meeting of blind people or when a blind person has made any personal
  achievement
we publish the stories. We have even started friendship column through
which
blind people get attached to each other. We even print readers' poems and
  articles.
Like any normal newspaper, the Braille newspaper also has various columns
and
  pages.
While doing story-selection, we try to maintain certain degree of
  excitement in
this newspaper, so that it should not sound boring. We publish articles
  related
to some world records or some recipes, which readers find interesting. We
  do not
give any political perspective said Jitendra Kumar, the Copy Editor for
the
  Braille newspaper.
Bhargava says that there is tremendous scope for such newspapers in our
  country
as India has very large number of blind persons who can benefit in
different
  ways through such initiatives.
Presently, 600 copies of the Braille Newspaper are published. It has high
  demand
among various institutions and individuals from across the country. Each
  copy is
believed to be read by over 100 individuals. (ANI)

 Sir,
I've followed your instructions. But, when I'm clicking on any link, the
page opens in Mozilla Fire Fox instead of IE., which means, still the
default browser is Fire fox. What to do?

 Expecting a solution,
 Abdul
