Subject: [AI] 10 Burning Questions About Microsoft Office 2007

10 Burning Questions About Microsoft Office 2007

John Fontana, Network World

Microsoft
released Office 2007
to corporate users and so began the slow and
methodical evaluation of the software (unless, of
course, you were an
early adopter).

With migrations to
Vista
, which is intertwined with Office, slowly looming on
the drawing boards for many companies over the next
three years and beyond, here's a look at some
of the questions to help pick apart Office and figure
out how, when and where it fits into corporate
desktop, infrastructure, VoIP and software-as-a
service
plans, and the target it presents to
OpenOffice.org-based suites
 and
online productivity tools
 popping up on the Web.

What is different about
Office 2007?

Well, this isn't your father's office suite. Office
2007, or what
Microsoft
calls the Office System, comes in eight versions and
contains 15 programs, eight servers and seven services
or add-ons. Users don't have to buy or deploy
all those pieces, but the days of the Word-Excel-
PowerPoint
-Access bundle now seem quaint by comparison. With the
Office 2007 suite, users can set up content
management, integrate with online services, deploy
real-time

communication tools
and other infrastructures using Office system pieces.
That means Office is no longer a desktop decision made
by the desktop team. It is also an infrastructure
decision that ultimately involves IT. And it is a path
that must include consideration of how it will
integrate with third-party vendors, especially when
deployments hit the VoIP level.

What's also different in the interface, most notably
the ribbon, which presents commands organized into a
set of tabs. The tabs change on the ribbon to
display the commands that are most relevant for the
specific Office application open on the desktop.

What does this change mean?

Training issues. Be forewarned.

Why so many versions and what do they cost?

Office is no longer one size fits all. Microsoft has
customized SKUs to meet specific demands and hopefully
stimulate sales. Here are the
versions
 and their prices:

Basic 2007 (no price quote, only available through
OEMs), Home and Student (US$149, with no upgrade
option), Standard ($399, or $239 to upgrade), Small
Business Edition ($449, or $279 to upgrade),
Professional 2007 ($499, or $329 for an upgrade),
Ultimate 2007 (priced at $679, or $539 for an
upgrade),
Professional Plus 2007 (volume licensing sales only),
Enterprise 2007 (volume licensing sales only).

Are there other licensing considerations?

Yes, all of the Office servers, all of the Web access
clients (Communicator, Outlook and Project), and the
Groove client are only available via volume licensing
contracts. Also users will need Software Assurance
contracts to have access to the new Office Enterprise
2007 and Office Professional Plus 2007. The main
difference between the two bundles is the inclusion of
Office Groove in the Enterprise Edition. Both will
ship with the Office Communicator client for
instant messaging and real-time communications,
including VoIP.

Here's one place where the Office System concept comes
into play on the back of the recently released
Office Communications Server 2007
, the Office Communicator client, and Office pieces
including Outlook and
SharePoint Server 2007
, to name a few. Presence is a cornerstone, allowing
instant access to colleagues and collaborators from
any file where a name is visible. Integration with
VoIP and the Live Meeting Web conferencing server
provides voice and video. The message is that Office
on the desktop becomes more feature rich when the
back-end servers are introduced to the network.

Why is there so much chatter about SharePoint Server
2007?

Microsoft wants to be a provider of content management
software and this is the vehicle to get there.
SharePoint
, in fact, is catching on like wildfire in
corporations, but it is still used mostly to host team
workspaces.

CEO Steve Ballmer
, however, last month pegged SharePoint as one of the
next billion-dollar businesses for Microsoft. Look for
SharePoint to become a platform for new social
networking features and Web 2.0 add-ons to Office. But
buyer beware, SharePoint Server 2007 requires an SQL
Server client access license to support some
of SharePoint's features. The cost of the client
access license can easily push the per-user cost of
running SharePoint up by $300-$500, according to
Forrester Research.

What is OBA, Duet, Live services?

Microsoft has packed something it calls Solutions and
Services around Office 2007 and is encouraging
partners and customers to tap into back-end

[AI] Physics provides new insights on cataract formation

2007-11-10 Thread renuka warriar
The Hindu News Update Service

News Update Service
Saturday, November 10, 2007 : 1550 Hrs

Sci. Tech.

Using the tools and techniques of soft condensed matter physics, a research
team in Switzerland has demonstrated that a finely tuned balance of attractions
between proteins keeps the lens of the eye transparent, and that even a small
change in this balance can cause proteins to aggregate and de-mix.

According to a press release from EurekAlert, this leads to cataract formation,
the world's leading cause of blindness.

This work could shed light on other protein aggregation diseases (such as
Alzheimer's disease), and may one day lead to methods for stabilizing protein
interactions and thus preventing these problematic aggregations from occurring.

The eye lens is made up of densely packed crystallin proteins, arranged in such
a way that light in the visible wavelength range can pass through. But for
a variety of reasons including UV radiation exposure and age, the proteins
sometimes change their behavior and clump together. As a result, light is
scattered
once it enters the lens, resulting in cloudy vision or blindness. There is
currently no known way to reverse the protein aggregation process once it has
begun. Nearly 5 million people every year undergo cataract surgery in which
their lenses are removed and replaced with artificial ones.

Previous research has shown that the interactions between the three major
crystallin proteins that make up the concentrated eye lens protein solution are
key to cataract formation.

A team of scientists from the University of Fribourg, EPFL and the Rochester
Institute of Technology (USA) studied the interactions between two of these
proteins, at concentrations similar to those found in the eye lens, using a
combination of neutron scattering experiments and molecular dynamics computer
simulations.

They found that a finely tuned combination of attraction and repulsion between
the two proteins resulted in an arrangement that was transparent to visible
light. By combining experiments and simulations it became possible to quantify
that there had to be a weak attraction between the proteins in order for
the eye lens to be transparent, explains EPFL postdoctoral researcher Giuseppe
Foffi, a member of the Institut Romand de Recherche Numerique en Physique
des Materiaux (IRRMA). Our results indicate that cataracts may form if this
balance of attractions is disrupted, and this opens a new direction for research
into cataract formation.

Lots of studies have been done on individual proteins in the lens, adds
University of Fribourg physicist and lead author Anna Stradner, But none on
their
mixtures at concentrations typically found in the eye. We modeled these
proteins as colloidal particles, and found there was a very narrow window in
which
the protein solution remained stable, and this was a necessary condition for
lens transparency.

In addition to unveiling important new information about the interactions of
the proteins in the eye lens, this benchmark study provides a framework for
further study into the molecular properties and interactions of proteins. The
results suggest that these properties could perhaps be manipulated to prevent
aggregation or reverse the aggregation process once it has begun.

 Hi

 Visit: http://www.songs.pk
Here you can download Hindi old songs, ghazals, pop, and Pakistani songs.
speaking from my experience, (you are free to disagree) Soundforge needs
lots and lots of ram and a very good processor, to do editing comfortably,
with just a bit of waiting for the assigned tasks to get finished. So if
 you
are planning to use foundforge only for recording, you may consider
 Audasity
as an alternative to soundforge. If however you have more than 1 GB of
 RAM,
then I think there's no problem in using soundforge, your only exception
 to
this is having Windows Vista on your PC, as it gobbles up more ram.
Sound forge scripts are already included in Jaws 8.0,. In case you are
 using
Jaws 8.0 and Jaws commands for sound forge are not working, open sound
 forge
(with Jaws already activated, of course), hold insert and press Q twice
 in
a quick succession and look for the application specific name. Now select
the exact application name as it is and deselect .exe at the end.
(remember you should unselect period, unselect E, unselect X, and unselect
 E) then copy the text.
Open run and type or copy from here and paste:
 %allusersprofile%\application
 data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\8.0\SETTINGS\enu
Look for the following files and rename them to the text in the clipboard,
 excluding their respective extentions:

 Sound Forge.jcf
 Sound Forge.jkm
 Sound Forge.jsb
 Sound Forge.jsd
 Sound Forge.jss
(Didnt understand?), no problem! press F2 on Sound forge.jcf and press
 CTRL
+ V and type: .jcf and hit enter.
and do this to the other four files.
Now quit Jaws and start it again. the scripts should now be working with
 sound forge.

 With best regards
 Syed Imran

Subject: [AI] A Touching Sight

A Touching Sight

Researchers have developed two technologies which
could help the visually impaired 'see' electronic
images just like 'reading' with braille...

Computer World

Researchers Oliver Slattery (left) and John Roberts
(right) use the tactile graphic display device to
depict the NIST logo. Their new systems translate
electronic images into braille-like patterns, enabling
the visually impaired to 'see' the images

Art and images enrich our lives, be it to illustrate
an example or to appease our aesthetic side. But the
lives of the visually impaired are devoid of this
aspect. Seeking to help those with optic defects,
computer scientists and engineers in the US have
developed technologies that help the blind get a
'feel'
of the image.

Researchers John Roberts and Oliver Slattery of the
National Institute of Standards and Technology's
(NIST) Information Technology Laboratory have created
two tactile graphic displays that bring electronic
images to the blind and visually impaired in the same
way that braille makes words readable.

The inspiration for both tactile graphic displays came
from a bed of nails toy.

Watching the pins in the toy depress under fingers
and then return to their original state got us
thinking about how the principle could be applied to
electronic signals, said researcher John Roberts.

A HELPING HAND

The first graphic display technology, introduced as a
prototype in 2002, conveys scanned illustrations, map
outlines or other graphical images to the fingertips,
and can automatically translate images displayed on
Web pages or in electronic books.

It uses refreshable tactile graphic display
technology, allowing a person to feel a succession of
images on a reusable surface, said the researchers.

The machine uses about 3,600 small pins - known as
actuator points - that can be raised in any pattern.
They can then be locked into place to hold the
pattern for 'reading' by placing one's hand on it,
similar to the braille system.

The actuator points then can be withdrawn and reset in
a new pattern, allowing the tactile reading to
continue through a variety of images.

Each image is sent electronically to the device, which
uses software to determine how to create a tactile
display that matches the image.

AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

An array of about 100 small, very closely spaced
actuator points set against a user's fingertip is the
key to the second tactile graphic display technology.

This device gives the user more direct control, the
researchers said.

To view a computer graphic with this technology, a
blind or visually impaired person moves one's
device-tipped finger across a surface like a computer
mouse to scan an image into the system's memory.

The computer sends a signal to the display device and
moves the actuators against the skin to translate
the pattern, replicating the sensation of the
finger moving over it.

US-based ELIA Life Technology Inc recently licensed
for commercialisation both the tactile graphic display
device and fingertip graphic reader developed
by NIST researchers. However, the company released no
details on when the product would be available.

In the future, the researchers say the technology
could possibly be used to make fingertip-based tactile
graphics ractical for virtual reality systems,
or to give a detailed sense of touch to robotic
control and space suit gloves.

Re: [AI] Here's Your Diwali Gift!

2007-11-10 Thread Ramit Luthra
Hi,
It's an ultimate mail I suppose, because I've bundled all the info
scattered in my previous mails.

Vachak:
rapidshare
 http://rapidshare.com/files/55931301/Vaachak.zip.html
  http://rapidshare.com/files/55933953/Vaachak.z01.html
  http://rapidshare.com/files/55934430/Vaachak.z02.html
  http://rapidshare.com/files/55937907/Vaachak.z03.html
sendspace:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/ibilg6
http://www.sendspace.com/file/c5pn5j
http://www.sendspace.com/file/e1kh9d

Divided into four segments (zip format), you must have winzip or some
similar tool to extract it. just follow these steps:
Here's the whole process step-by-step for Ashish sir and others.
1. Download all four files in a same folder (For instance, C:\Vaachak).
2. Run/extract the main Vaachak.zip file (Let's Assume in the same
directory C:\Vaachak)
2.1. Make sure that the size of the newly extracted Vachak folder must
be around 46m (if it's not, I afrade there could be an error somewhere
 in the download process.)
3. Now There's to be one folder named Vachak inside the Vaachak
folder, open this folder and There's gotta be folder named Programs,
open this folder and run SETUP.EXE or SETUP (depending on the folder
option settings of your system), and follow the instruction to install
the program.
4. After you done with Vaachak installation, revert to the previous
folder named Vachak, now, copy both the files named ProLicense.dat and
ProLicense.txt and paste them into the program folder of Vaachak (that
should be c:\Program files\Prologix Software Solutions Pvt
Ltd\VaachakSapi. Note: If there's any confirm replacement dialog click
Yes.
5. Now go to the program folder of LsW (that should be C:\Program
Files\Language Sweet For Windows, and paste both the ProLicense files
here also.
6. Run Document Editor++Vani, and open any Hindi document and listen
whether Vani reads Hindi or not.
7. If you still encounterred the dam dialog Please check your license
validity, just follow these few steps to get it done:
(I) Restart the application (Document Editor), and open that Hindi
document via recent files list and not via Open dialog. Oh, Don't ask
me! The list is in the file menu. Yeah, that numerically ascending
file paths following the Print command.
(II) Vani should have started reading Hindi text, Na?

(Bye the way, your system must have Indic language support installed
to have any Indian language beeing written.)
For that, you should read the user manual of LSW (Which you should
do anyway! Its awesome when it comes to know that a VC person can do
 all these things single handedly.)
But if you're lazy... I can help you...!

Just do this:
1. put your windows XP CD in your CD reader/writer drive (the CD
should be one you use to install Windows XP).
 2. Click start, point to control panel, and click Regional and
Language Settings Option.
3. Press ctrl+tab once, check the Install Right-to-Left Languages
(Including Tie), and click OK (the installation dialog should have
started, let it be finished.)
4. After installation, close any window that is opened.
Note: The following steps are required if you'd run Document Editor
even if for onle once before installing the languages (through
previous steps).
5. Run Document Editor, Point to Language menu and click Load Language...
6. From the Available Keyboard Layouts combo box, choose
Devanagari-INSCRIPT and in the Language Name edit box, type 'Hindi',
click Add, and then click OK.
7. Now, again go to the Language menu and click the command
Hindi-Devanagari-INSCRIPT (it must have been there, as we've just
added it from the previous step.)
8. Now, you must have been able to write Hindi via normal keyboard,
you can also switch to Brail keyboard by simply pressing the keyboard
shortcut ctrl+i or choosing Hindi from the Brail submenu of the
Language menu.

Outloud:
USXX (2m, contains only USEnglish engine)
http://www.sendspace.com/file/wn4esj
Full (17m)
http://www.sendspace.com/file/o3lqev
http://www.sendspace.com/file/qs3ib8

You should download the full one as you may require to install any
other language in future, but as of now, you're required to install
the US English engine only. I recommend you to install it from the
main folder's outloud setup.exe file instead of its subfolder USXX
folder's setup.exe file. If you're installing from the main setup.exe
file, uncheck all the other languages check boxes (if they are checked
by default.)

After installation
To have viavoice worked with Vani, you must do one thing (which you
can also read entirely on the download page of LSW,) anyway I'm just
explaining it briefly here.
Open the program folder of viavoice (which should be 'c:\Program
Files\Via Voice' or something similar to it,) copy the file named
'ibmeci50.dll', open system's system folder (just tyep 'system32' in
the start menu's run dialog and press enter,) and paste the file here,
you're done!

Note: What I have read on sendspace, if an uploaded file isn't
downloaded

[AI] Braille registration plates caught in delays

Braille registration plates caught in delays

Gaurav Vivek Bhatnagar

Despite the Delhi Government giving its approval

Negative impact of frequent change of Transport Commissioners

Scheme for the visually impaired fails to take off

NEW DELHI: Delhi has had as many as ten Transport Commissioners in the past six
years and this has had a negative impact on implementation of various projects,
particularly those which are not big in nature and require a committed and
human approach from the authorities. A case in point is the installation of
Braille registration plates in three-wheeler scooter rickshaws that has still
not been done despite the Delhi Government giving its in-principle approval
to the project.

The installation would have been of critical use for the visually impaired as
it would allow them to know by the feel of hand the registration number of
a hired auto-rickshaw and pass it on to some friend or acquaintance for
personal security. But despite the project not being expensive as each plate
costs
barely Rs.15, it has not taken off due to bureaucratic red tape.

This has prompted Samarthya National Centre for Promotion of Barrier Free
Environment for Disabled Persons, which has been working to promote Mobility
for All for persons with reduced mobility and disability, to once again
approach the Commissioner Transport, this time D. M. Spolia, to demand speedy
implementation of the project.

In his letter, Samarthya founder and project director Sanjeev Sachdeva has
stated that following the consent of Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf the
organisation had proposed installation of Braille plates of auto registration
number on all auto-rickshaws for the benefit of persons with low vision and
vision impairment, including senior citizens.

These Braille plates will help people lead an independent life and make travel
safer for them, he wrote, adding that in this regard, meetings and discussions
were held with your predecessors Mr. Vijay Madan and Mr. Chandra Mohan as also
with Mr. Virendra Kumar, Joint Commissioner.

Mr. Sachdeva has expressed regret over non-implementation of the scheme and
stated that he was made to understand that the State Transport Authority had
decided to place the Braille registration plates in the auto-rickshaws in the
groove near the entrance and to include the same in the permit conditions
for the autos.

Referring to a letter sent to him on February 13 this year by Assistant
Director (Operations) A. K. Srivastava, the Samarthya founder wrote that the
letter
had clearly stated that the Delhi Government has in principle approved of the
proposal for introduction of the Braille manuscript registration plates
and it has been decided that this could be made as one of the permit conditions
for the auto-rickshaws.

Lamenting the delay in the matter, Mr. Sachdeva said what needs to be realised
is that the visually impaired have to put up with a daily struggle while
commuting and hoped that the Delhi Government would speedily implement this
scheme and not allow change in posts to affect its enactment.

[AI] Web-based tool set makes Windows Live

2007-11-10 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Web-based tool set makes Windows Live

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Microsoft last week joined the trend to put more and more personal
computer applications on the Web - rather than taking up space on users' hard
disks.

It has integrated almost a dozen applications geared for Windows software users
under the brand name Windows Live - and made them available as a single
130-megabyte download.

Package

The package includes a multiple e-mail accounts integrator; an instant
messenger; photo-sharing and management tools; software to help users publish
blogs
and to enable parents to set browsing limits on individual family members.

Also included is an event-planning service as well as specific browsing options
for mobile phone users.

The family-friendly features are aimed at parents who agonise over the dangers
lurking on the Web - yet are loath to hamstring their children's creative
Net-enabled pursuits. The Windows Live features can be mixed-and-matched to
create a personalised package at
