Subject: [AI] KNFB Mobile Reader

Hi all,

I really got excited to know about it, KNFB has developed software which can
be installed on N82 as it has 5 mega pixel camera. Although they only say it
works with N82, I think it should also work with N95.

I have yet not tried this software, and I am not sure about it's price, but
it's approximate price is 1500 dollars.

knfb Reading Technology, Inc. is pleased to announce the latest breakthrough
in print accessibility. We have developed software which places the
functionality
of a reading machine into a multifunction cell phone. The Mobile Reader
products can be activated and ready to use with the touch of a single button
on
the phone. The user takes a photo of the print to be read and the character
recognition software in conjunction with high quality text-to-speech will
read
the contents of the document aloud. At the same time, it can display the
print on the phone's built-in screen and highlight each word as it is
spoken.

The Mobile Reader Product Line:
. Reads most printed documents, from letters and memos to pages in a book
. Reads address labels and package information and instructions
. Easily recognizes U.S. currency
. Displays each sentence visually and highlights each word as it is read
. Stores thousands of pages using easily obtainable flash memory
. Transfers text files to and from computers or Braille note takers
. Adjusts reading speed to suit user's preference.

In addition, with the use of a screen reader, the user can access the other
functions of the phone device including making and receiving phone calls,
personal
information management such as contacts, calendar, etc. Also contains
ability to run accessible GPS programs, access to Adobe PDF files, voice
recorder,
music player and much more.

With a name like Fairytalia, today’s resource could be
nothing if not about fairytales.  Although, the site
is still a “work-in-progress”, you’ll find
enough of stories on it to keep you occupied for a
fair amount of time. Divided into various sections
such as Classic Fairytales, Modern Fairytales, Crazy
Fairytales, etc, today’s Web site is an address that’s
begging to be bookmarked.

[AI] (Tech Dose of the Day)

2008-01-28 Thread vishnu ramchandani
Tech Dose of the Day

GUI Widget, Social
Bookmarking, WebWork, Silverlight, Virtual
Hosting, Clustering, WYSIWYG, SSO, Censorware, WEB
CMS, WML, etc.

Contributed by M&E (Media & Entertainment Delivery)
Group (MphasiS Software Services).

GUI Widget
What is a GUI Widget?
A widget (or control) is an interface element that a
computer user interacts with, such as a window or a
text box. Widgets are sometimes qualified as virtual
to distinguish them from their physical counterparts,
e.g. virtual buttons that can be clicked with a mouse
cursor, vs. physical buttons that can be pressed with
a finger.
Widgets are often packaged together in widget
toolkits. Programmers use widgets to build graphical
user interfaces (GUIs).
Some examples.
Some of the widgets are :
Buttons such as toggle and radio, Drop-down lists,
ToolBar, Tab, ScrollBar, Text-box, Tooltip, Progress
bar and Modal window.

Social Bookmarking
What is Social Bookmarking?
Social bookmarking is a way for Internet users to
store, organize, share and search bookmarks of web
pages. In a social bookmarking system, users save
links to web pages that they want to remember and/or
share. These bookmarks are usually public, but
depending on the service's features, may be saved
privately, shared only with specific people or groups,
shared only inside certain networks, or another
combination of public and private. The allowed people
can usually view these bookmarks chronologically, by
category or tags, via a search engine, or even
randomly.
Most social bookmark services encourage users to
organize their bookmarks with informal tags instead of
the traditional browser-based system of folders,
although some services feature categories/folders or a
combination of folders and tags. They also enable
viewing bookmarks associated with a chosen tag, and
include information about the number of users who have
bookmarked them. Some social bookmarking services also
draw inferences from the relationship of tags to
create clusters of tags or bookmarks.
Many social bookmarking services provide web feeds for
their lists of bookmarks, including lists organized by
tags. This allows subscribers to become aware of new
bookmarks as they are saved, shared, and tagged by
other users.
As these services have matured and grown more popular,
they have added extra features such as ratings and
comments on bookmarks, the ability to import and
export bookmarks from browsers, emailing of bookmarks,
web annotation, and groups or other social network
features.
 What is its usefulness?
This system has several advantages over traditional
automated resource location and classification
software, such as search engine spiders. All tag-based
classification of Internet resources (such as web
sites) is done by human beings, who understand the
content of the resource, as opposed to software, which
algorithmically attempts to determine the meaning of a
resource. This provides for semantically classified
tags, which are hard to find with contemporary search
engines.
Additionally, as people bookmark resources that they
find useful, resources that are of more use are
bookmarked by more users. Thus, such a system will
"rank" a resource based on its perceived utility. This
is arguably a more useful metric for end users than
other systems which rank resources based on the number
of external links pointing to it.

WebWork
What is WebWork ?
WebWork is a Java web-application development
framework. It is built specifically with developer
productivity and code simplicity in mind. WebWork is
built on top of XWork, which provides a generic
command pattern framework as well as an Inversion of
Control container. In addition to these features,
WebWork provides robust support for building reusable
UI templates, such as form controls, UI themes,
internationalization, dynamic form parameter mapping
to JavaBeans, robust client and server side
validation, and much more.
 More details on WebWork:-
WebWork is an open source Web development framework
for building Model 2 applications. Philosophically, it
is closer to Struts than Tapestry. It works within the
existing Web APIs in Java rather than attempting to
replace them completely. WebWork contains several
concepts and constructs that are unique and that set
it apart from other frameworks, such as the Pull
Hierarchical Model-View-Controller design and the
value stack, which supplies values to their custom JSP
(Java Server Pages) tags.
WebWork is produced by the Open Symphony project. This
project includes many embedded projects; WebWork is
just one of them.

Ifyou select reply to sender option from mailing list mails,
the mail will go to the group.
If you are using jaws 7 are above there is a option called reply

You have to select this option for replying personally for mailing
 list

 I think the key-stroke is jaws key + control+r.
I am not sure about the key stroke ,

 Hi Amar,
Ifyou select reply to sender option from mailing list mails,
the mail will go to the group.
If you are using jaws 7 are above there is a option called reply
 directly
 to sender.
You have to select this option for replying personally for mailing
 list
 mails.
 I think the key-stroke is jaws key + control+r.
I am not sure about the key stroke ,
 check yourOE keyboard manager .
if you need more help write to me offlist.
 Hope this helps .
In a day, when you don't come across any problems, -you can be sure
 that
you are travelling in the wrong path -. .

Re: [AI] Excellent job oriented training

2008-01-28 Thread Ramit Luthra
Hello Mr. Dipendra,

I have gone through the website, the course catalog demo has been
provided in video format (if I landed right), however I've got the
enough overview of the course, but few questions have blown up in my
mind, about the online classes, if they be held in video format, would
they be comfortable for a VC person to comprehend each and everything?
Especially those, that are related to hardware assembling/plugging.

Secondly, (I personally don't think so,) but still, just to clarify
whether there are any special online classes for VCs being organized?
(Referring to the "first batch", as you have stated).

I assume these and other things must have already been sorted out. If
Yes, then the course could prove to be a great help in widening career
opportunities for VCs.

Thanks,
Ramit

Correct boss! It works. When I pressed alt+1 it announced your name. Now,
how can I know the sender's email address? for example, how can I know your
email address? I am a biggner in using OE and have no tutorial for this.
That's why I am asking from all of you. Hope nobody will be getting
disturbed.

I know that which I did is an offence. But those who have seen my last
 mail that is:

they will understand that I have not done this wantedly. It was due to

Re: [AI] problem with mouse over links

2008-01-28 Thread Mr. Mukesh Sharma
Dear Mukesh,
Use Ctrl + Insert + Enter on a mouse over link, If JAWS say test changed at
line , use j to jump to that line and if jaws says could not detect
change, then use Route JAWS cursor to PC and then use num pad slash to open
the link.
Some time the link open in a new window or a new tab, to check use Alt + Tab
for new window and use Ctrl + Tab for new page.
Thanks
Mukesh

Re: [AI] problem with mouse over links

2008-01-28 Thread Vedprakash Sharma
I am using windows xp with service pack 2. the talking software is jaws8.0
the mouse over links are opening without any problem. there is some problems
with some enaccessible sites but using jaws cursor and activating the link
with left mouse button may solve the problem. at times, when different types
of toolbars are installed on your system, this problem may occur. these
toolbars are of no help to the visually impaired so better uninstall them.

[AI] camp ability

2008-01-28 Thread firoz
I am reposting this from the AER list serve. Plese go to the web site
listed, and do not reply directly to this e-mailCandy

We are once again recruiting for volunteer camp counselors in Alaska.
In past years, we have received TVI's and future TVI's from all over
the nation, and hope we can find great help once again. Please feel
free to post this to any university billboards or listserves that you
feel would be appropriate. This has been a great network to help us get
the word out.
Hello!

My name is Jacinda Danner and I am the Vision Specialist
for Camp Abilities Alaska. I am searching
for volunteers for our week-long developmental sports
camp in Wasilla, Alaska. This year's
dates are July 7-15th, 2008.

Camp Abilities Alaska is a developmental sports camp
for youth who are visually impaired, blind or
deafblind. Activities include hiking, swimming, beep
baseball, goalball, track and field, kayaking, and
archery. We are looking for current and future teachers of the
visually impaired, adapted physical educators, special education
majors, and anyone with
interest in working with youth who want a great
week-long learning opportunity as a camp counselor.

Camp is held at a lodge with cabins, a small lake
and great Alaskan views. The volunteers will learn
how to teach youth who have a visual impairment how to
participate in sports and recreation and get
to know some great people. Some colleges have used
this experience as practicum hours toward a degree in
teaching those with visual impairments, adapted physical
education or other related fields.

Please visit the website:
www.campabilitiesalaska.org
for more information.
This can be the excuse you
have always wanted to visit this great state!
I hope to hear from you soon!

Thank you,

[AI] Your phone as a mouse?

2008-01-28 Thread vishnu ramchandani
Your phone as a mouse?

That might soon be the case, thanks to a new software
developed by British computer scientists...

IDG News Service

With the new technology, a user can move pictures on
the PC screen by simply pointing the cameraphone at
the screen and clicking and moving it around (right).
The same method could be used to draw an image, such
as that of a house (left). The program also allows
users to zoom in and out of photos by moving the
phone closer and further away. Since the PC screen’s
content is also displayed on the phone’s screen, a
user can perform operations from a distance as
well
Imagine that you take a picture of your child using
your cell phone, while out for a walk. When you come
home, you might want to store this image on your
PC and print a copy using your PC printer. Wouldn’t it
be so much easier if you could do all of this just by
moving your cell phone in front of your PC
screen?

For example, you could look at the ‘My Documents’
folder through the cell-phone camera, and twist the
phone momentarily to open that folder. Do the same
for the ‘My Pictures’ folder, and then, by moving the
phone towards the PC screen, you could transfer all
the recently taken images to the PC over a Bluetooth
link.

This is now possible, thanks to a new program
developed by Nick Pears at the University of York, UK,
and his colleagues Patrick Olivier and Dan Jackson
at the Newcastle University.

“The basic requirements for this technology are that
your phone has got to have a camera on the rear and a
wireless connection with the PC, such as Bluetooth,”
Pears says.

And of course, you would need to have the program
installed on both, your PC as well as your
cameraphone.

HOW IT WORKS

The camera on the phone looks at the PC screen and
extracts some features, such as the corners of
windows; their positions are sent from the phone to
the
PC over the Bluetooth link.

The PC then compares these positions with what it
knows that it is displaying on its own screen. Thus,
it can calculate precisely what the phone is looking
at on its screen. In human terms, it is like knowing
where your nose is, but being able to touch it
precisely on a point you desire by getting visual
feedback
from a mirror.

The computer can also calculate the phone’s position
and orientation relative to the PC screen. Thus, the
phone can be used as a six-degree of freedom
‘flying mouse’, a bit like the Wiimote – the
controller for Nintendo’s video game console Wii.

“But it is more than that,” Pears says. “Since you
have a cloned part of the PC screen on your cell phone
screen, you can interact with the PC screen through
the phone.”

APPLICATIONS

Pears recently conducted some tests with random users
to see the usability of the technology.

In the tests, users were shown a set of images on the
screen, and asked to rearrange them according to a
pre-given order. The participants managed it easily.

By depressing a trigger button on the smartphone, the
user was able to manipulate the targeted image. The
images could be moved and rotated by mimicking
the action on the phone, parallel to the display

Users could also zoom in by moving the phone closer to
the screen, and zoom out by moving it away.

In another test, users drew the basic outline of a
house by clicking and moving the mouse around like a
pointer – all of this using the Microsoft Paint
software.

But the applications of this technology aren’t for
just interacting with PCs.

“This starts to get really exciting, when you realise
that large public displays are just PCs with a large
screen,” Pears says.

For example, imagine the future where billboard
advertisements are computerised - something like a Web
page. You may want the details of a property
advertised
on a screen in an estate agent’s window, when the
estate agent is closed. Obviously, you cannot interact
directly with the screen, as it is behind a pane
of glass.

It would, however, be possible to interact via your
phone using this new invention, because you have a
cloned copy of part of the advertising screen on
your phone screen.

“By simply tapping a particular property icon, viewed
on your touch-sensitive phone screen, such a tap is
echoed through Bluetooth to the appropriate point
on the estate agent’s screen, and so any action on
that property data can be triggered,” Pears says.

“You could open the full advertising screen out to
show more images of the property or sending the
property details to your phone via Bluetooth or
sending
details of the property to your email account,” he
adds.

The number of ways this technology could be used are
only as limited as your imagination, he concludes.
