Re: [AI] A Short History of Tactile Reading and Writing.

2008-02-07 Thread Amiyo Biswas
Hello Viraj,

I read several articles and books available online. I do not have the direct
links because I saved the material on my pen drive. Still you will find them
on the following sites:
Enabling Technologies:
www.brailler.com

RNIB:
www.rnib.org.uk
NFB (USA):
www.nfbnet.org

In addition I read two braille books on Louis Braille by Pierre Henri and by
Margaret Davidson available from Blind Persons' Association.

I also visited Wikipedia at
www.wikipedia.org
for certain references.

I read braille books a lot regularly. I gave up braille writing when I
became used to computer. But now after reading so much about Louis Braille
and his achievement, I have started carrying my braille writing frame again.
I use computer for all sorts of jobs. Still I never feel like reading when I
am using Jaws. It seems that I am listening to somebody's reading.

Best regards,

Amiyo.

Great attempt! The article is extremely informative. The journey of the
blind from oral to print culture, enabled not only by Braille, but by
several other creative inventions, is well brought out. If possible, can
you
provide us with a brief reading list, where one can find these and other
 relevant facts in more detail?

  Hello everybody,

I have written the article on the above for our web site. I tried to
explain the attempts made at development of some tactile code for the
blind people before braille system and how Braille began his quest for a
suitable method and succeeded in finding it. I would be very happy if
you
read it and send me your comments. The web site of Blind Persons'

Or if you want the direct link, it is:

Re: [AI] Error Report!

2008-02-07 Thread YADAV, D. N
Dear Subramani,

As per my personal observations I understand this problem occurs for two
basic reasons: 1. ur system is not able to escalate the load further due to
RAM/ROM running short which could be partially fixed with deleting temporary
files. 2. more likely, there could be a small snag with system needing
fine tuning which could be done without formatting with 'repair' option of
your OS CD. I did have similar hitches at occasions often managed through
above.

Thanks on the subject. Mamta has given good elaborations but I assure 'low

I am using 'Talk' Premium original on it. Could anybody say he/she is using

Re: [AI] Regarding DOS

2008-02-07 Thread Abbo Usef

be sure to incude the foders that contain spaces in
between in quotation marks: for example:
cd my documents

be sure that the current path contains the folder
specified before entering into it.

if you are in windows 2000 or xp, when u go to the
command prompt feel free to use the variable
%homepath% to enter to the folder documents and
settings\userProfile
that is to type in:
cd %homepath%
then enter.
then
cd my documents
to enter to the my documents folder in the user
currently running.

[AI] A screen reader

2008-02-07 Thread Samuel Rodrigues
Friends,
Some of you may know this, but I would like to tell that there is a screen
reader called satogo
It is very useful if you are going out and using others computer, example you
may go to the internet centre, you need not carry window eyes or Jaws.
Satogo is a free software for internet explorer, so you can use it on the
internet. If you want to use it on the computer without the internet you must
buy it.
SA means System Access and togo means to go.
the program is available at
www.satogo.com
It may be a bit different, but you'll learn it, when you start using it.
Hope this may be of help to some of you in the list.

[AI] Training in etiquette

2008-02-07 Thread Geetha Shamanna
Hello all,

There was a lengthy discussion on this list sometime ago about usage of
cutlery and other table habits.

It might be possible to arrange for a one-day training workshop with the
help of Mitra Jyothi where cutlery usage and other etiquette could be taught
by professional trainers. This can be done if adequate number of people in
Bangalore are interested in attending such a training session.

Before we proceed with the venture, we would like input from interested
participants about the following:

1. What would you like covered in the training in addition to cutlery usage?
Please list out specific topics.

2. Preliminary enquiries revealed that training institutes charge enormous
sums for such trainings, considering that such sessions are mostly offered
to corporate clients and some amount of pre-training preparation is
involved. Tentative cost per person would amount to around Rs.1200 per
person. Would this be too expensive?

Please send in your inputs.

Geetha

[AI] Writing style

2008-02-07 Thread Ketan Kothari
Dear List Members,

I am quite appalled at the goings-ons at the list. Some of our members are
writing things that they are not supposed to write and oh God! the language
that they are using is even more appalling. If we expect to be taken any bit
seriously and treated with equal dignity then please be careful about how you
write and what you write. If you expect to become voice and accent trainer and
this is the language you use then ... God may help you. The spelling and
grammar errors in the mails are just shocking and I am not sure whether they
are committed deliberately or is this the standard that we represent. I fully
understand that while composing mails we are not allways on guard but some
amount of care and common sense will be appreciated. It is a great shame to
read wrong English. Please buck up and use good language including semantics
and spellings.

Thank you.

I want to lock some of my audio files. In folder options I found the

[AI] Today's Website

If you are having trouble playing a video or sound
file, today’s resource might be a good place to look
for help. It stores a huge collection of codecs, codec
packs and supporting software to make your multimedia
viewing easier. A word of caution though: Be very
careful when installing these, as the wrong codecs
could hamper your system’s performance.

Re: [AI] Hi every one

2008-02-07 Thread Subramani L
Hai:

Since I've also done English lit about 13 years ago, I can understand
the problems you face. Though looking for audio materials is good, you
must remember that they could be extremely costly. Therefore first thing
you must do is to catch hold of volunteers who can read the lessons and
get it recorded. If you get someone who has done literature, it's even
better, because you can ask them to mark the important
pages/paragraphs/chapters of a drama or a novel (it's impossible to
record an entire novel cover-to-cover) and get it recorded.

You may perhaps ask your own classmates to read short texts like poems
and short stories (as they may not have patience to read longer texts
and may regard reading short texts as a means of learning the text for
themselves).

Please visit the audio section of the British Council in your city and
see if you can pick up a few texts available there. I remember listening
to plays like Murder in the Cathedral in BC Chennai. Make full use of
volunteers and friends and use your Braille and listening skills.

Yes, I totally agree. People should pay some attention to the finer
aspects of writing especially spelling and grammar. Making mistakes
occasionally is ok, but such mistakes shouldn't be happening frequently.
