Modified stick for the visually challenged Student Awards Sanket V. Chitagopakar and Prashant V. Harshangi City: Gulbarg State: Karnataka Sanket V. Chitagopakar (17) and Prashant V. Harshangi (17) are from Gulbarga, Karnataka. They are both in the second year of their Pre University Course. Prashant's parents are doctors and his brother is studying medicine. Sanket's father is a doctor and his mother is a housewife. His brother is studying in the tenth standard. Genesis It was on the 17th of July, 2002 and Gulbarga city had received the first showers of the year. There were puddles everywhere and Sanket happened to observe that a blind man who was walking by with a stick fell in one. It was a sad sight. The next day Sanket discussed this incident with his friend Prashant and they conceived the idea for the stick. Under the guidance of their teacher Mr. R. Hemant of the Sharnabasaveshwar Public School Gulbarga, they contacted Prof. Y.N. Ravindra who gave them a brief idea of the circuit and they started the project. Both relate that they faced a number of technical problems while developing the innovation. The main hitches were in fixing the circuit onto the stick and fixing the IR sensors and IR LEDS. They acknowledge the guidance of Prof. Y.N. Ravindra who gave them many useful tips and hints, which made the development easier. After days of hard work they prepared the circuit and the model. Next, the prototype was given to the local blind school for testing. The students of the blind school found the innovative stick more convenient than the existing alternative. Advantages Multiplexers are used to sense obstacles in different directions simultaneously. This means, the blind person might receive different signals on obstacles in different directions around him through the headphone. The moisture sensing electrodes sense the moist soil or stagnant water. This can be especially helpful during the rainy season. It also contains micro-switches, to detect manholes. Finally, in order to make the system more versatile, an anti-theft alarm is also incorporated to warn the user if the stick is being stolen. It is known that in most of the visually challenged, the other sense organs are highly developed. That's why the creators think the stick will effectively serve the purpose. They haven't made any move to commercialise it. This device costs Rs.800. Social relevance Blind people totalling over 1.5 million have difficulty in travelling and successfully sensing obstacles, manholes and puddles of stagnant water. They need support for all their activities. They need a third leg i.e. the stick to walk. One of the primary problems faced by the visually challenged is to walk freely in a public place. The outside world is rife with dangers especially when they leave their dwelling place, as they may fall down and injure themselves or stumble against an electric pillar or meet with an accident. Thus this innovative stick has great social impact as every visually handicapped is a potential user. Considering the various features and its superiority over the existing alternative even at the present cost, this stick is an essential accessory for blind people as it greatly enhances their mobility. Other applications of this innovation could be its use by sewage workers, miners etc or in situations where light is dim/not available or for military applications where the need is to move around without using any light source. While such sticks are generally known in literature, the specific combination of features such as water sensor, alarms, FM transmitter etc., have not been reported in any one stick. Pride of the family "Till now nobody in our family has done anything innovative. But they may now get inspired from us and do something in the near future!" declare Sanket and Prashant. These young innovators have always had a tendency to try and understand everything. This tendency and flair for improvisation coupled with a curious nature played a vital role in making their innovation a success. Their family's pride in them is revealed in one sentence, "These two have a genius dancing between their ears". They go on to explain, "What made us support them in this course was their attitude towards this project. It was not merely mechanical but it was for a cause- to help the blind. Of course we were a bit worried about their studies. In this competitive world we just lay stress on our children's academics. Yet, innovative thinking is necessary and there

Hi Seems a brilliant work. Any contacts of the developers of those canes. If anyone is able to establish contact of them, please do put in a mail on the list as well. I wish they had used the word canes in lieu of stick however, that is somewhat small issue. [AI] Chill Out, Your Computer Knows What's Bes t For You
ScienceDaily (June 21, 2008) - Computers are starting to become more human-centric, anticipating your needs and smoothly acting to meet them. The technologies the researchers developed leave humans free to concentrate on their real work instead of having to think about the computer and how to operate it. A new project set out to put human needs first in the development of new communications technologies. In other words, the researchers examined ways in which computers can serve humans better, rather than humans being subservient to the way computers are currently designed. The researchers are from companies and organisations around Europe who are harvesting the work done by CHIL, an EU-funded project that officially ended in August 2007, but which has spawned numerous spin-offs. Focusing on humans Rather than focusing on human-and-machine interaction, they set out to create a new paradigm of machine-supported human-to-human interaction. The researchers' goal was to improve user satisfaction and worker productivity. The researchers looked at communications and the use of technology in meeting rooms, lecture halls and classrooms and set out to make the technology responsive to human needs in such settings. The CHIL team developed systems that could understand the context of meetings and proactively help the participants by controlling the meeting environment. For example, during a meeting such a system can filter and respond to incoming mobile phone calls to each participant, secretly remind participants of facts such as other participants' names, and provide a virtual shared workspace for all. Many of the spin-offs from the project involve participants in CHIL, and the technologies the researchers developed. Smart crisis management Researchers will observe how police or fire officials in a crisis management room handle incoming data in an emergency situation, and work out ways in which they can be helped to communicate both amongst themselves and with the outside world. Stiefelhagen, who is also involved with this project, explains: "We want to build a smart environment supporting this kind of work, with big interactive displays and relevant services and a lot of perception components. Then we will take the best of them and develop them even further for practical applications, after working with the emergency services to see how this can best be done to meet their requirements." Another CHIL application is being developed by a new startup company, Videmo Intelligent Video Analysis. Videmo plans to provide the service to retailers and surveillance firms. The company is developing software for intelligent video analysis with a focus on customer monitoring in retail situations. The system can automatically analyse customer behaviour to, for instance, show which displays are attracting attention and which are not. On the security side the system can provide video-based monitoring and analysis of point-of-sale systems, including automatic fraud detection. "There are a lot of CCTVs continually monitoring, but 95% of the time the data is simply recorded and stored away," says Stiefelhagen. "What this company aims to do is build more intelligent video analysis programs which can perform tasks such as automatically identifying wanted people or recognising suspicious walking and movement patterns." House anticipates occupants' needs At an earlier stage of development is a proposed link-up between one of the CHIL project partners and an Italian building company to develop a smart house, moving from the single-room environment which served as testbed for the project's researchers. Here the analogy between computer and butler is much closer, with the house computer anticipating the inhabitant's needs. Many potential applications for CHIL technologies have also been identified and suggested in the catalogue. One of these is to use SmarTrack, a real-time system that provides accurate information about the spatial location of people in sports analysis. During TV coverage of a sporting event, real-time tracking of each player would allow for online analysis of the important phases of the game to support the commentators. Face recognition is another area that may be ripe for development, replacing or augmenting PIN codes and other forms of biometric security access, such as fingerprints. The potential applications include access control to buildings, offices, computers and the internet, as well as for the authentication for electronic transactions. CHIL received funding from the EU's Sixth Framework Programme for research. To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. Yet, innovative thinking is necessary and there lies the real creativity of every person." Sanket and Prashant have also made a project titled 'Automatic dipper'- the main use of which is to automatically dip the headlights of the vehicle at nights on highways. Many accidents are caused, because of bright l

Re: [AI] Technical writing tools
Hi Govind, It is indeed possible to access Word and Powerpoint with Jaws, as you might already know. I have never used Snaggit or Visio and cannot therefore provide you any inputs. However, since there is no such thing as a perfectly accessible job, you should simply take the plunge and try to use as much of these tools as possible. Re: [AI] Database
Thank you for the response especially Subramani. I am glad your form is in. I would have felt that the work is incomplete had your name not been in it. Some of you have felt that you have not received the form that is true. To clarify I had sent emails to about 75 people. I had started withsome areas. This was random. As and when I found an address I just emailed it to that person. Out of the first bunch of 75 we received responses from about 25. A very lovely lady volunteer called meetul is actually doing the work. She cannot believe it that we dont want to do a small thing like filling a one page form. On Friday night she was feeling so disheartened so I thought a wake up mail would be good. Those who have received the form would fill it up immediately and those who will get it in the future will not have to be reminded. As I mentioned Xrcvc had already emailed the form on accessindia last year and seeing the response I did not think it wise to do so again but now I am going to email it once again on accessindia and my request is that you please fill it up and send it in without waiting for a personal mail from me.Also please ask your friends to fill it up since a lot of people are not on accessindia. the database was originally designed to collect data about visually challenged people who are working but looking at the enthusiastic response from the students I think we are going to create a database of students which will then slowly but hopefully shifted to the database of working people. Prof Shyam you are absolutely right that a database is valuable only if it is updated regularly. The first issue is that there must be data and thats what I am collecting. this database will be online and it is everyones duty to inform if they know of any changes and last but not the least I think we will be doing a follow up every year. Be prepared for a long wake up mail next year as well. Rupakshi you are correct and forward thinking. At present I am collecting the infromation for XRCVC and as a promise I made to the chairman of the Employment Department of NAB India.I know the tabulation is going to be in Exel and it is going to be online.all the other technical details I will not interfere with. Even if we have a basic database it can be expanded upon and developed. The target of course is to have as much information as possibel and as many names however realistically I would think about 2000 people who are working and as many students would be a good start. I think we have about 100 of each and lots of incomplete data at present. After collecting the information about people who are using email we will have to move towards the ones who are not. We will be sending snail mail and telephoning and I think thats going to be the real challenge. I dont think that getting your information will be very difficult so please dont make it difficult for me or Meetul. A big thank you to Renuka and several others who have been helping with names and email addresses and who have personally been forwarding the forms. Thank you all for the seriousness with which you take my mails and support my efforts. Re: [AI] Braille watches in Delhi
Hi Subramani HMT was selling the winding wrist watch for a very long time. It also sold very cheap for about RS.100 - 250. In between I understand they also brought the quartz model. I haven't seen it though. Probably the winding model is still available. I think the company name is Sikkim electronics had the talking watch and Desktop Talking Time piece.
