[AI] CSI conference

2008-09-24 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
HELLO RAKESH

CSI conference was too a wonderful event the import of which one may realise
only by attending it.

However, I have the cd of conference proceedings and would be glad to share it.

It contains the full text of all the papers presented, although I would have
liked it to also contain the presentations of all the speakers.

Regards

Rajesh Asudani

Re: [AI] MY FEEDBACK REGARDING THE CONVENTION

2008-09-24 Thread Dinesh Kaushal
Well, I do not agree that convention was not properly organized, as to me it
appeared very well done.

With regard to some of the problems, they are present in any such large
event, and we need to think from organizer's perspective.

Managing such a large event with regular jobs is not a easy thing, we can
realize the extent of work only by going through it, and all who have been
involved in making it happen deserve our special thanks.

I do not know everyone who has been involved in organizing the convention,
but I really thank all of you for such a wonderful job. And per small
hitches, I do not have any right to say anything without doing any work
myself.

yes,I do agree with Vikas to large extant. Some persons from Delhi were not
allowed to speak on very important topics. No introduction was given for the
those who were attending the Convention. They felt marginalized and only
some people and their work was highlighted. Though I am not very happy with
this convention and hope, that things will improve in the next time.

[AI] A Problem in Outlook Express

2008-09-24 Thread ashik
Dear Friends,
I have been facing a problem in the Outlook Express for several days. I have
got several folders in it. Earlier, in any of these folders, when I hit the
delete button placing the cursor on any mail, it used to be deleted straight
away. But now, when I hit the delete button, it asks for confirmation whether I
want to delete it permanently from the computer. Earlier, when I deleted a
mail, it used to go to the "Deleted items" folder. But now, it is deleted
permanently bypassing the "Deleted items" folder. Moreover, when I get out of a
particular folder [for example: my voice of vision folder], I land in the
deleted items folder. How has this happened? Any idea? How can I restore the
earlier status? Please help me out.
Thanking you in anticipation.

[AI] 'I want my data back' It trends

'I want my data back' It trends

Recovery measures: Working on a damaged hard disk in Stellar's Class 100 Clean
Room in Gurgaon.

Just over a year ago, the devastating cyclone 'Gonu' struck the coast of Oman,
bringing torrential waters into its capital, Muscat, and flooding many computer
installations. For weeks after that episode, it was round-the-clock work, in a
quiet corner of Gurgaon's Sector 33, where engineers grappled with the challenge
of recovering precious corporate data from dozens of water damaged hard disk
drives, that had been shipped from Oman, to the 'Class 10 0' ultra clean lab
rooms of Stellar Information Systems, one of the best known names in the
understated, global business of data safety and recovery (
www.stellarinfo.com).

The last edition of this column (The Hindu, September 11, 2008) reviewed the
broad data recovery challenges for the enterprise sector. This edition completes
the picture with a look at how this is actually done.

As enterprise storage needs crash through the terabyte ceiling into petabytes,
data recovery has emerged as a key corporate concern (a petabyte is 1024
terabytes. A terabyte is 1024 gigabytes.

A gigabyte is 1024 megabytes. And a megabyte is just over a million bytes of
information).

But since so much of the data that needs to be recovered is priceless - and
highly sensitive - those who specialize in this line of service, prefer to
maintain
a low profile: business grows as word-of-mouth enhances their reputation for
discreet and confidential recovery services.

Rare privilege

It was therefore a rare privilege to visit Stellar's facility and walk
(suitably clothed) through India's largest (and the second-largest in Asia,
after
Korea) Clean Room, rated Class 100 - that means, a room designed to never allow
more than 100 particles of 0.5 microns or larger, per cubic foot of air.

Such an ultra clean environment is necessary, before one can even begin trying
to recover data from damaged disks because it involves completely dis-assembling
the hard drive and exposing the magnetic recording surface: even a speck of
dust can destroy a stored sector of files.

Stellar is able to accept an extremely wide range of hard disk brands and
types, many going back decades, because it maintains a large library of such
original
disks.

In most cases, where data recovery through purely software methods has not been
possible, the failed component is among the many electromechanical components
in the drive and not the recording surface (if it were the latter, data
recovery would be well nigh impossible).

Engineers replace the damaged parts in the drive offered for recovery, with
parts from Stellar's reference units, and then try to run the unit.

Skilled, time consuming

If that works, the data is dumped on another computer and a copy furnished to
the customer on another medium like a DVD.

Such physical repair and recovery is a skilled and time consuming process,
attempted only if software methods don't work: Stellar's network extends across
137 countries and dozens of centres where customers send their damaged drives.

They can also attempt software recovery on their own using some of the tools
offered by Stellar for desktop and laptop recovery; file repair; encrypted
media or password recovery. Sending the physical drive to Gurgaon is the last
resort.

Once received, it is determined if recovery is possible - and if the answer is
'yes' the process is usually completed within a few days: every job is 'top
priority' for its originator: the records of a bank's savings accounts; the
password directory of a large enterprise; a data base of engineering drawings
created after months of work.

"It's all a matter of trust," says Stellar's Chief Executive, Sunil Chandna,
"since we entered the data recovery business 15 years ago, we have over a lakh
customers."

Terabyte a reality

What about the rest of us, with our home and small office PCs? Our data is
growing too, and one terabyte in the home is now a reality.

In recent weeks, Stellar has launched a few consumer products, 'Phoenix Photo
Recovery', to get back precious photos in almost all formats, inadvertently
erased from digital camera or phone media; 'Black Cat', is a combined
anti-virus and data recovery tool for formatted drives, deleted partitions and
malfunctioning
software.

The obverse of data recovery is data removal: sanitising a drive completely of
all one's files and data before disposing it or giving it to another user.
Stellar's 'Disk Wipe' solution helps in the permanent removal of data from a
hard disk.

When you delete a file on your PC, even when you empty the recycle bin, the
information is not completely erased, merely shifted to a different,
inaccessible
part of the hard disk. This is both good ne

[AI] MY FEEDBACK REGARDING THE CONVENTION

2008-09-24 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Hi all,
Let me share some of the experiences that I had about the second convention of
Access India list.
The convention, no doubt, was a great success as far as the participation of
its members was concerned. However, there are certain things which I'm
concerned about, such as, complete segregation amongst its own members, dearth
of volunteers, the lousy preparation in terms of broadcasting this convention
over the Skype and its recording and so on.
I'm also not really happy with the kind of attitude meted out to the speakers,
for example, some of the speakers (wouldn't like to name them) were warranted
extraordinary felicitations and therefore were awarded a lot of time to speak,
while on the other hand, some of them were not allotted enough time to expand
what they wanted to spell out, for example I myself was given 9 minutes and 59
seconds where I couldn't have put forward some of the very crucial areas. I
think the time management was completely improper and the organisers didn't do
enough homework towards that area. Nevertheless, I'm not complaining against
anybody, but this is what I felt from deep inside my heart.
However, not withstanding the above facts, the local people of the city were
very generous, hospitable and receptive. The food was very fascinating and
delicious.
I think overall this convention was a great achievement. Without making this
event a controversial one, I sincerely express my gratitude to all who
endeavoured to make this convention a success and hope the above stated things
would be taken care of whenever the next such foregathering takes place.

Re: [AI] Leprosy patient cannot hold municipal post: apex court

2008-09-24 Thread SC Vashishth
Thanks Rajesh for such reasonable arguments. I think I do agree here to a
larger extent that age old rules which are discriminatory to any one in the
society - be it a disabled or one suffering from some disease, should be
immediately declared ultravires. All such rules which are in conflict with
the Right to Equality guaranteed by the Constitution and Basic Human Rights
that International conventions advocate and to which India is a party,
should be amended forthwith.

I must confess that I have been inundated with several such cases in the
recent past where you see that reason is lost in the cob-web of the legal
proceedings, interpretations and personal opinions and biases.

I am attaching a recent case to Rajesh, Kanchan & Subramani (Others who
would like to contribute their point of view can access the same at
http://disabilityrightsthroughcourts.blogspot.com/ ) in which a double bench
of Delhi High Court has given some not very convincing reasons for
disallowing one petition in which Scale of Play allowed in Grant in Aid to
NGOs vis-a-vis Government Scale for the same posts were sought to be made
equivalent on the principal of Equal Pay for Equal Work. I need your
observations, suggestions and arguments in support of the case so that the
matter could be taken up at higher levels.

regards

[AI] New Cell Phones Serve the Visually Impaired

2008-09-24 Thread Accessibility News
New Cell Phones Serve the Visually Impaired

Rebecca Wanjiku, IDG News Service

In an effort to be more inclusive, Vodacom Group has launched speaking phones
for customers who are blind or partially sighted.

"Vodacom is proud to increase accessibility to cellular communication products
and services in line with the specific needs initiative launched in 2004,"
said Dot Field, chief communications officer of Vodacom Group.

The phones are loaded with text-to-speech software that converts the
information displayed on the cell phone screen to speech, including text
messages and
contact lists. The software enables the user to check other information,
including battery life and signal strength.

"Vodacom Speaking Phone users will not pay extra for the text-to-speech
software, as Vodacom has subsidized this cost," Field said.

"As a disabled person, I understand how important independence, accessibility
and mobility is," said Karen Smit, senior specialist for Specific Needs and
Employment Equity at Vodacom Group.

"I think this is the coolest thing," said Judy Okite from Kenya. "It is high
time we saw more initiatives like this."

[AI] Some useful Web Sites

2008-09-24 Thread Today's Web Site
wordia.com

This Web site aims to be a ‘next-generation’ online dictionary. Just like a
traditional online dictionary, wordia.com allows you to search for the
spelling, meaning and etymology of a word – but now, you can also record and
upload a video of yourself defining any word the way you choose. Other users of
the site can therefore discover what a word means to you – a complete stranger.
Each ‘authored’ video definition is, of course, appended against the correct
textual entry. Go ahead, try it.

www.knowledgehound.com

Here’s a useful resource to track down information on the Web, this site is an
aggregator site that collects ‘how-to’ links on various subjects - from
motorcycle repairs and first aid, to solar cooking and personal finance. What’s
more, it also seeks out links on festival preparations, including on those
celebrated here, such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Onam and Ramazan.

www.studygs.net

With exams around the corner, this site is bound to be of help for students and
parents. Titled ‘Study Guides and Strategies’, the self-explanatory resource
offers a large list of articles, tips, tricks and methods to help you prepare
for your tests. And while some of the content is US-centric, most of the
material is still useful as it applies to all learners.

[AI] Mashup, Software as a Service (SaaS), OAuth and much much more!

2008-09-24 Thread Tech Dose of the Day
Mashup
Dosed By sajjad syed — M&E Team (from MphasiS Software Services)
What is a Mashup?
A mashup is a website or web application that seamlessly combines content from
more than one source into an integrated experience.
Content used in mashups is typically sourced from a third party via a public
interface or API. Other methods of sourcing content for mashups include Web
feeds (e.g. RSS or Atom) and JavaScript.
Many people are experimenting with mashups using eBay, Amazon, Google, and
Yahoos APIs. The increased use and popularity of mashups has increased with the
emergence of Web 2.0, which is characterized by active user participation and
interaction.
The architecture of mashup web applications is always composed of three parts:
• The content provider: it is the source of the data. Data is made available
using an API and different Web-protocols such as RSS, REST, and Web Service
• The mashup site: is the web application that provides the new service using
different data sources that are not owned by it.
• The client web browser: is the user interface of the mashup. In a
web-application, the content can be mashed by the client web browsers using
client side web language for example JavaScript.
Types of Mashups:
There are many types of mashups, such as consumer mashups, data mashups, and
business mashups.
Consumer mashups:
Consumer mashups combine different forms of media from multiple
sources and combine them into a single graphical interface. Consumer mashups
are aimed at the general public, that is, consumers. Examples of consumer
mashups include the many Google Maps applications, iGuide and Radioclouds.
Data mashups:
Data mashups combine similar types of media and information from multiple
sources into a single graphical representation. An example of a data mashup is
the Havaria Information Services' AlertMap. which combines current data from
over 200 sources related to severe weather conditions, biohazard threats and
seismic information from around the world, and displays them on a single map of
the world. Another example of a data mashup is Yahoo Pipes
Business mashups:
Business mashups focus on various forms of data aggregation into a single
presentation, but also allow for collaborative function ability amongst
businesses and developers. Serena Software is a company involved in the
business mashup industry.
How It works?
Refer to howitworks.bmp attached.
Data:
The core element of any mashup is the data being aggregated and presented to
the user. Although the above diagram depicts the source of the data as a
database, the concept of a mashup does not require a database that is local to
the mashup software or the client. The data can strictly come from Web services
where data is serialized to XML or JSON (this is the most common pattern in
Internet-based mashups). RSS feeds Use of RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds
is a common source of primary or supplemental data for mashups. RSS feeds are
easy to consume as they are XML documents, and many libraries exist to
manipulate the feeds. The format and specification for RSS is well documented
and understood with only a few variations from version to version. Web services
It is also common to include calls to Web services within mashups. It is common
to see both WSDL-based Web services and REST-based Web services, with some
services exposing both styles. Web
services can be used to provide additional data or used to transform the data
being mashed up. For a map-based mashup, the data may only contain street
addresses and a call to a WSDL or REST-based Web service may be required to
translate the street address to a Longitude / Latitude coordinate for the map.
Platform services Figure 2 depicts a special class of services that are used to
create mashups. We are calling these platform services because they provide
functionality beyond the typical request/response model of traditional Web
services. A typical example of this is the mapping service provided by Virtual
Earth. Virtual Earth includes an entire array of server-side and client-side
processing capabilities, as well as the “services in the cloud.” We see the
emergence of cloud-based building block services that begin to create value.
For example, the Amazon S3 service offers storage “in the cloud”; this makes it
easier to expose any static data
by uploading it to a hosted storage provider. Microsoft’s BizTalk Services is
a platform service that provides a different capability – the ability to relay
communications from the Internet across a corporate firewall, thus exposing
internal services for consumption by business partners or third parties
building their own enterprise mashups.
An Example:
Refer to mashup_example.bmp attached.
Mashup applications:
Thus far we have identified many of the types of services that can be used to
create mashups, but we have not addressed the importance of the software that
creates and delivers the mas

Re: [AI] Leprosy patient cannot hold municipal post: apex court

2008-09-24 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
EXTENDED OR NOT, SUCH JUDGMENTS SHOW LACK OF BASIC JURISPRUDENTIAL KNOWLEDGE ON
THE PART OF HONORABLE JUDGES.

SO, THE JUDGMENT IF TAKEN TO ITSLOGICAL CONCLUSION MEANS THAT ACTIVE LEPROSY
PATIENTS OUGHT TO BE CONFINED AND SEGREGATED IN GHETO LIKE STRUCTURES AS THEY
ARE A POTENTIAL RISK TO PUBLIC IF THEY CONTEST ELECTIONS OR COME TO PUBLIC LIFE
IN ANY MANNER.

is there suffficient medical evidence that a person having contageous form of
leprosy spreads it by merely being in the same room or using same stationary or
so?

I doubt if any medical expert was consulted by apex court before pronouncing
such a draconian fiat!

ARE NO PROPER PRECAUTIONS AVAILABLE TO SAFEGUARD PEOPLE AROUND A CONTAGEOUS
LEPROSY PATIENT AT ALL?

IT IS SURELY A POINT TO BE THOROUGHLY SEARCHED.

we have recently paid tribute to baba amte, who I am sure, if apex court is
infallible and legally sound/medically accurate, must have contracted leprosy
almost half a century back when he commenced work with leprosy patients!!!

even imperiling myself with contempt charges, I dare say that our judges, many
of them, are utterly deficient in legal accumen and seldom can appreciate true
essence of very many cases.

Rajesh

[AI] New Bluetooth System Orients Blind And Sighted Pedestrians

2008-09-24 Thread pradeep banakar
ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2008) — A new Bluetooth system designed
primarily for blind people places a layer of information technology
over the real world to tell pedestrians about points of interest along
their path as they pass them.

The Talking Points urban orientation system was developed at the
University of Michigan. Researchers will present their work at two
conferences on Sept. 24.

"Blind people can get from point A to point B. They learn to count
steps if they have to, but they miss the journey because they don't
always know what they're passing. The idea behind Talking Points is to
enhance the journey," said James Knox, adaptive technology coordinator
for the University's Information Technology Central Services and one
of the system's developers.

"Talking Points can be viewed as a first step in the direction of an
audio virtual reality designed for people with blindness and very
useful to the sighted community as well," Knox said.

For the sighted community, the system could give passersby a peek at
the specials or sales inside a business. It could offer on-the-go
access to customer reviews. For blind pedestrians, it could do the
same, but it would also fill those gaps in knowledge. Talking Points
could help visually-impaired people find public restrooms, police
stations, public transportation and restaurants with Braille menus,
for example.

"If it caught on, this would be an effective way to tag the whole
world," said Jason Stewart, a master's student in the School of
Information who is involved in the project. "Anyone with a reader
could use it to find out more information about where they are."

Similar systems exist, but Talking Points is the first known to use
Bluetooth, cater to both the sighted and the visually-impaired, allow
people to operate it entirely with voice commands, and incorporate
community-generated content through a website.

Knox and collaborators in the School of Information and the Department
of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science created an early
version of Talking Points years ago.

A group of master's students and undergraduates has given the project
new energy. They shrunk the receiver and switched the transmitting
technology from RFID to the more popular Bluetooth. They are also
exploring other technologies such as GPS.

Stewart and fellow School of Information master's students Jakob
Hilden and Michelle Escobar will present papers about Talking Points
on Sept. 24. Stewart and Hilden will present at the Ubicomp 2008
conference in South Korea. Escobar will present at the Accessible
Design in the Digital World conference in the United Kingdom.

The Talking Points system includes several components:

A mobile device picks up the Bluetooth signals and speaks or displays
information to the user. In the future, a cell phone could be the
receiver, but this prototype isn't a phone. It is slightly larger,
about the size of a paperback book. If a user wants more information
about a beacon, she can tell the device by voice or touch.

Bluetooth beacons, or tags, would be located at points of interest
where owners wish to give information to Talking Points users.
Businesses could purchase these beacons, which cost less than $20.
Cities could tag information centers, parks or other buildings, for
example.

A website would allow Talking Points beacon owners to program their
tags. They could update their messages regularly. Once a beacon is
added, other community members could add their comments about the
point of interest. Pedestrians using the system could then choose to
get those comments.

"This project enables a type of augmented reality," said Hilden, one
of the students who will present the research at Ubicomp. "It shows
how we can take user-generated information from the Internet and lay
it over reality to help people make sense of where they are in their
environment and what the possibilities are around them."

In addition to developing a prototype receiver, the students tested
their system in field simulations with visually-impaired and sighted
people and conducted focus groups.

"Location-based guide systems of one kind or another have been built
and re-built by academic researchers for over a decade now, but this
is the first project that has really focused on the needs of the
visually impaired and gone out to make sure the system is being
developed to meet those needs," said Mark Newman, an assistant
professor in the School of Information and the Department of
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Newman is a co-author of
the papers that will be presented.

The students received a $10,000 grant from GROCS 2008 to undertake
this project. GROCS stands for Grant Opportunities [Collaborative
Spaces], a Digital Media Commons program to fund student research on
digital media in collaborative learning.

The Ubicomp paper is called "Accessible Contextual Information for
Urban Orientation." The Accessible Design in the Digital World paper
is called "Contextual inf

New Delhi: A leprosy patient cannot contest a civic poll or hold the
post
of a councillor or chairperson of a municipality, the Supreme Court has
ruled.

The verdict upheld the decisions of the Election Tribunal and the
Orissa
High Court that had upheld the provisions of the Orissa Municipal Act,
which
disqualifies a leprosy patient from holding such posts.

 'Not discriminatory'

Holding that these provisions are not discriminatory and violative of
Article 14 of the Constitution, Justices C.K. Thakker and D.K. Jain
said:
"We do not
find any infirmity or illegality in the judgment warranting
interference."

"... The legislature in its wisdom has thought it fit to retain such
provisions in the statute in order to eliminate the danger of the
disease
being transmitted to other people from the person affected," it said. -

Today, Apple released a new version of iTunes bringing it to version
8. Apple also announced new iPod Nanos.

Briefly mentioned in the Steve Jobs keynote, is the ability for iTunes
to now be used using VoiceOver in Mac OS X and Window-Eyes in Windows
XP or Windows
Vista. VoiceOver and Window-Eyes are screen reading software for blind
and visually impaired users.

>From Apple:

iTunes 8, which is screen-reader friendly for both the Mac and the PC,
provides compatibility with VoiceOver in Mac OS X Leopard and
Window-Eyes 7.0 for
Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Not mentioned during the keynote is the accessibility features of the
new generation of iPod Nano.

>From Apple:

The new iPod nano (4th generation) — the world's most popular music
player — introduces spoken menus that let visually impaired music
lovers browse and
select songs without viewing the screen. Instead, you'll hear a
synthesized voice speaking the names of menus, songs, and artists.

To take advantage of spoken menus, you will need:
List of 4 items
• iPod nano (4th generation)
• iTunes 8
• Mac OS X v10.4.11 or later
• Windows Vista or Windows XP Home or Professional (Service Pack 3 or later)

Not only is this great news for blind consumers but this is great news
for consumers who have a hard time reading small text. Blind and
visually impaired
music fans have been largely ignored when it comes to accessible music
players. Kudos Apple!

[AI] Void(0)

2008-09-24 Thread silpa
Hi all,
Can anybody tell what is the functionality of void(0)?
Its a linjk, but its not getting activated when enter is hit.
In such cases, what use do we accessibility people find?
Is there any means of disabling this particular link and making Jaws not to
read this text?

When insert + shift + down arrow is pressed, i.e., to read the selected text
Jaws is reading out some text without any text being selected in Rediffmail and
Gmail homepage.
How to resolve this problem?

Thanks and regards,
Silpa.

Re: [AI] Leprosy patient cannot hold municipal post: apex court

2008-09-24 Thread SC Vashishth
Dear Friends,

The Judgement is very valid as it expresses its concern on spreading of
Leprosy (in its communicable form) - meaning thereby that it is active
leprosy.

However, once cured, Leprosy Cured Person is covered as a Person with
Disability in the Disability Act-1995 provided his disability exceeds 40%
after due medical assessment. And disability is not a disqualification to
hold any Public Office.

So, we can keep our faith still on the legal acumen of the Honorable
judges!!

[AI] Dramatic Results In Eye gene Op

2008-09-24 Thread shahnaz
 BBC NEWS
'Dramatic results' in eye gene op
 US scientists have
claimed success using gene therapy to
try to reverse a severe inherited sight disorder.
 They injected material
 containing a corrective gene into
the eyes of three patients with Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA).
 The journal Proceedings
of the National Academy of Sciences
reports all three showed signs of "significant" improvement in their vision.
 UK researchers carried
out a similar procedure on three
 patients last year.
 They believe the method
could be ready for use within two
years to treat people suffering from some
inherited diseases of the retina, which
 affect 20,000 people in Britain.
 Within three years,
they believe it could be ready for testing
on people who suffer age related macular
degeneration, a condition that affects 500,000
 Britons.
 The paper adds to the
body of evidence supporting the value
of gene therapy for people with inherited disease
 Dr James Bainbridge
 Institute of Ophthalmology
 Gene therapy works on a
simple principle - to replace a
malfunctioning gene, and restore function to a
part of the body affected by a genetic
 disorder.
 In practice, however,
it has proved very difficult to find
ways to introduce the new gene copies in the
 correct tissues, and experiments in
 animals have had mixed results.
 In the eye, however,
gene therapy has shown more promise.
 LCA affects
approximately one in 80,000 people, causing
progressively worsening vision, often starting in the first few years of life.
 It is responsible for
one in 10 severe sight disorders in
 children.
 A fault in the RPE65
gene is to blame, and the gene therapy
injects working copies of the gene into the back of the eye.
 Just 30 days after the
 treatment was delivered into one
eye of each of the three young adults involved in
 the US study, the improvements
 could be measured.
 The researchers, from
 Pennsylvania University, the University
of Florida and Cornell University, suggested that
the function of "cones" in the
retina, which are used in daytime and colour
vision, could be boosted up to 50-fold
 - a "dramatic" improvement in function.
 However, vision in the
treated eyes was not perfect - with
the patients showing an abnormally slow adaptation to low light levels.
 UK first
 In the UK, scientists
and doctors at the Institute of Ophthalmology
and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London have been
working for some years on a similar
 approach.
 In 2007, they were the
first to perform a gene therapy operation
on three people with LCA, and earlier this year
 reported significant improvement
 in one of these.
 Dr James Bainbridge,
one of the Institute of Ophthalmology
researchers involved, said the US findings were a
step forward, helping to fine tune
the technique and maximising the chances of success.
 He said: "This paper is
 important because it provides further
evidence that gene replacement therapy can
improve vision in people with this form
 of LCA.
 "It also confirms the
prediction that the extent of improvement
depends on the number of surviving target cells
at the time of intervention, and
shows that both rod and cone photoreceptor cells can benefit.
 "The paper adds to the
body of evidence supporting the value
of gene therapy for people with inherited disease."
 Professor Robin Ali,
who also worked on the UK study, said
the latest paper gave scientists a much better
idea of what dose of gene therapy
 would give the best results.
 He said: "We can now
begin to find out how much useful vision
is restored by improving retinal sensitivity and
whether the results are better in
young children when we treat the whole retina using a high dose."

2008-09-24 Thread Dinesh Kaushal
I don't think Supreme Court is talking about ex Leprosy patients, I guess it
is about those who still have Leprosy, and since it can spread, it seems a
valid judgement. It should not be an issue once they are cured, it is only
till they are not cured.

Leprosy patient cannot hold municipal post: apex court

New Delhi: A leprosy patient cannot contest a civic poll or hold the post
of a councillor or chairperson of a municipality, the Supreme Court has
ruled.

The verdict upheld the decisions of the Election Tribunal and the Orissa
High Court that had upheld the provisions of the Orissa Municipal Act, which
disqualifies a leprosy patient from holding such posts.

 'Not discriminatory'

Holding that these provisions are not discriminatory and violative of
Article 14 of the Constitution, Justices C.K. Thakker and D.K. Jain said:

"... The legislature in its wisdom has thought it fit to retain such

High Court that had upheld the provisions of the Orissa Municipal Act, which
disqualifies
a leprosy patient from holding such posts.

 'Not discriminatory'

Holding that these provisions are not discriminatory and violative of
Article 14 of the Constitution, Justices C.K. Thakker and D.K. Jain said:
"We do not
find any infirmity or illegality in the judgment warranting interference."

"... The legislature in its wisdom has thought it fit to retain such
provisions in the statute in order to eliminate the danger of the disease
being transmitted
to other people from the person affected," it said. - PTI
