Titan unveils Braille watches for visually impaired
December 02, 2008 (India)

Titan Industries Ltd, India's leading watch manufacturer, has just
unveiled Braille watches – watches specially made for the visually
impaired. These watches crafted with a protective liftable top cover
and raised patterns on the dial; make a great aid for visually
impaired people to have time on their fingertips.

Titan undertook an extensive research with a group of visually
impaired people from all walks of life to understand the various
elements that makes the watch user friendly. The main objective was to
ensure that a flawless product is available without hindering the
daily routine of the user.

Speaking about the launch Mr. Harish Bhat, COO – Watches, Titan
Industries said, "We strongly believe that with adequate assistive
devices, the visually impaired can lead a normal life. Apart from
meeting the basic functional needs of time keeping, these watches have
been designed with great style.

In other words these watches are Titan's way of respecting and
recognizing the visually impaired and offering them something that
adds to their personality. We are confident that these watches would
be more than just a time keeping device and would express their
individuality and independent pursuit of life."

The Titan Braille watch has been designed in-house by the Titan Design
Studio and is manufactured at the company's manufacturing plant in
Hosur. The watches come with a special instruction manual in Braille,
which has been developed in consultation with the National Association
for the Blind.

Designed in round and rectangular stainless steel cases these watches
have a quartz movement. The stainless steel cases make it sturdier and
reliable. Priced at Rs. 995/- the watches come with a warranty and
battery life of 2 years. These special watches will be available at
all World of Titan showrooms across the country and select multi brand
outlets.

National Association for the Blind starts a carrom tourney in the
city, which receives overwhelming response

MUMBAI: Mumbai faced gruesome terror attacks last week that brought
the city to a standstill. But life is getting back to normal in the
financial capital of India.

Wednesday was the World Day for the Disabled. Despite the sombre mood
in the city, the National Association for the Blind (NAB) opened a
Sports and Recreational Centre for the visually impaired that started
off with an All India Open carrom tournament.

The attacks could not stop the participants from coming to Mumbai.
Visually impaired from all over the country are participating in the
tournament that is being held at the King George V Memorial Infirmary,
Mahalaxmi.

Former international hockey player Mir Ranjan Negi, who inaugurated
the Sports and Recreational Centre, was emotional. "We have gone
through a terrifying situation over the last few days. But coming here
and meeting these people just teaches you how one should not give up.
Though they are visually impaired they have never lost hope and are
very confident. When god takes away one thing, it gives you many other
things and they are the best example," he said. "I have been to many
inauguration functions but today's experience will soothe my soul.
Meeting them gives me positive energy and a will to fight."

Sanal Kumar, a participant from Kerala, said his family and friends
dissuaded him from coming to the city. "My family and friends said it
was not safe to go to Mumbai, but I was adamant. Had I stayed home and
not come because of the fear, it would have been a victory for the
terrorists and a defeat for humanity," Sanal said. "I love playing
carrom and this is the first time I am participating in a carrom
tournament. I could not lose this opportunity."

Ashish Tembhkar, 19, who works as a telephone operator in the NAB
workshop, says he feels safe only in this city. "I have been following
the attacks on the radio. How can these people cause damage to
humanity? But I feel our people are strong enough and would bounce
back soon," he said.

He believes that participation in such community activities and
showing strength by not letting attacks affect the daily functioning
of city will defeat the terrorists' agenda on spreading terror. "I
don't want to lose and I just want out to go there and play. It will
only help our spirit become much stronger," he said.

[AI] Can we use a scribe to write the MAT ?

2008-12-03 Thread Sudhir R (NeSTIT)
Hi folks !

A young friend planning to take the MAT conducted by the All India
Management Association reports that she is finding it difficult to get a
suitable response from the authorities for her requests to be
sanctioned a scribe.

Initially, the form that one needs to fill up while registering for the
test had no provision to include this request. So, she sent many mails
to the contact email id given on the Prospectus making her request, but,
has not received any response so far. Unfortunately, the prospectus
does not contain any telephone numbers where she could get help.

She is growing tense as the exam is scheduled for this Sunday, Dec 7,
2008.

Would appreciate if anyone, particularly those who have already written
MAT, could guide us on what to do. Pl share your experiences, any
contact ids or telephone numbers of administrators etc which would help
us resolve this issue in the next two days.

An early reply would be highly appreciated.

Thanks and rgds

[AI] Hi!

2008-12-03 Thread Vamshi G
Hello, This is Vamshi G.

How are you?

Today I was going through a web site by the name of www.womans-era.com,
which is a web site for Woman's era, India's Premiere Women's English
Fortnightly. While I was going through the web site I clicked on a link
"Evaluation Copy in PDF Format", and downloaded the whole evaluation
issue in PDF Format from there, which came in five small capsules.

What caught my attention was the variety of topics that were covered in
the magazine. It also has a good visual quality, which looks quite real.
I must say that I haven't seen a magazine before that has been placed so
well on the Internet.

Now I am planning to subscribe Woman's Era in PDF Format forever and for
this I'll just have to pay one small amount in the beginning.

I will suggest you also visit the site www.womans-era.com
and check out the quality of the evaluation
copy and try to subscribe it if you find it worthwhile.

Re: [AI] Fw: RANDOM THOUGHTS ON THE EVE OF THE WORLD DISABILITY DAY 2008

2008-12-03 Thread Vetrivel Adhimoolam
It brings us to a crucial element of the subject. There is so much of
discussion on the air regarding the preparation to face such situations.
However the perspective of physically challenged is completely lacking in
such discussions. Questions such as: What should a physically challenged
person do in the event of he/she being caught in such situation? Why is this
element completely missing particularly in the context of India? etc need to
be prioritized. It also necessitates us to be adequately oriented to such
public spaces so that we will not be lost in the event of such attacks. Last
but not the least, the slow pace of the military action is partially
attributed to the distraction of lights at these hotels. Assuming that it is
true, isn't it an area where our experience can be tapped in to? After all
one needs to realize that brail letters in the beginning were extensively
used at war like situations. So if the administrators have not learnt a
lesson from such historic factors, then it is the high time that we rise to
the occasion to remind them of our potential.

Just my thoughts.

Vetri.

Subject: RANDOM THOUGHTS ON THE EVE OF THE WORLD DISABILITY DAY 2008

RANDOM THOUGHTS ON THE EVE OF THE WORLD DISABILITY DAY 2008

Preparing for this World Disability Day has not been easy.

A grave terror attack hit our Nation on 26th November. We have become so
immune to bomb blasts that earlier in the evening as news trickled in, I
didn't pay much attention. I switched off the TV, had late dinner and
concentrated on work. It was only very late in the night, at about 2 or 3
a.m. that I switched on the TV and was quite awestruck because by that time,
almost a full battle was on at The Taj in Mumbai. I could not believe my
eyes and kept switching from one channel to the other. And as I surfed, the
enormity and the vastness of the tragedy unfolded. I remained glued to the
TV till almost 6 or 7 a.m. Finally, I had to go to sleep, only to wake up
some hours later but the picture on the telly had still not changed. And
then, it went on and on and on…

How does one divorce oneself from such real grief. Well, you can switch off
the television but how do you switch off your own mind, your heart, your
soul? It could be me. I could have been there or one of my loved ones. I and
my family have absolute fond memories of Bombay, now forcibly called Mumbai.
My sister got her education there and worked there for many years. My
brother's sasural is there. And I have visited the city a zillion times.

I could never afford staying at The Taj but always made it a point to visit
its Coffee Shop overlooking the sea and the magnificent Gateway of India. At
the Trident, I have stayed many a times. One of the things that most of you
wouldn't know is that it has one of the most disabled-friendly toilet
anywhere in the world! Also, the largest. The room was so-so-so accessible
that leaving the routine features aside, you could even draw or open the
curtains by merely pressing a few buttons on a remote control, sitting in
your bed. While it may seem funny or odd to some of you, ask me as a
paraplegic as to what a delight such little facilities are. I truly wish all
our hoteliers and developers were as humane as the Oberois are.

The Sea Attack in Mumbai has finally ended. The burst of the AK 47s has
given way to a loud chatter. Switch on any television screen and people are
speaking loudly. Generally, people are angry, upset and above all, helpless.
Can we change the system? Is it possible for us to change the system?

Some basic questions continue to haunt:

a.. How come we were caught so off guard? Especially, with all the
intelligence inputs available much in advance.

b.. Why did it take NSG 9 hours to get there?
c.. Why did it take 67 hours for NSG, Army and Navy, not to mention
Mumbai's police force combined to kill a mere 9 terrorists?
d.. Were there many more? How come they escaped and where did they escape
to?
While one was/ is coming to grips with the tragedy of almost 200 people dead
and hundreds injured, came two more shockers: (1) The Deputy Chief Minister
of Maharashtra, RR Patil said, "Such small incidents do happen in big
cities". (2) The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Vilasrao Deshmukh visited
The Taj to inspect its scarred remains and decided to bring his son along,
who is a mere second rate film actor, called Ritesh Deshmukh. The son, in
turn, decided to bring along his friend, a third rate film maker by the name
Ram Gopal Verma. What saved India from committing mass suicide, woh bhi
chullu bhar pani mein, is the fact that Ram Gopal Verma did not take Urmila
Matondkar along

folks, while brouzing i've came across to an interesting website.
though it's not of that much use, but sometime may useful if situation comes .

Many messaging services today use SSL, the secured Service language,
so as to protect the privacy of your messages. But still, most of them
are prone to be easily tapped by simple web tools, which are freely
available on the Internet. You messages are specially risky to be sent
at the Wi Fi Hotspots.

Here enters Lockbin, a special and free web tool, which promises to
deliver your message to its recipient with total secrecy.

How does it work:

You have to go to their website, write the message which you want to
send and provide a code word with which the message is encrypted. Like
an online financial transaction service, Lockbin uses HTTPS / SSL /
Secure Sockets to communicate between browser and server.

Then it sends an email to the recipient as declaerd by you, which
contains a link to the encrypted message. The recipient can click on
the link and decrypt the message with the same code word, with which
it was encrypted by you. Now, it is upto you to how you send that code
word to the recipient. For that, you can use a telephone call, or IM,
or chat or for that matter, another email.

It basically encrypts your message with a code words supplied by you
and sends an email to the recipient along with a link to retrieve the
message. However, the recipient can read the message only if he enters
the code word, with which you had encrypted the message. Now it is
upto you how you send the code word to the recipient, it can be
through IM, chat, email or phone.

Simple, but still a powerful application.

RANDOM THOUGHTS ON THE EVE OF THE WORLD DISABILITY DAY 2008

Preparing for this World Disability Day has not been easy.

A grave terror attack hit our Nation on 26th November. We have become so immune
to bomb blasts that earlier in the evening as news trickled in, I didn't pay
much attention. I switched off the TV, had late dinner and concentrated on
work. It was only very late in the night, at about 2 or 3 a.m. that I switched
on the TV and was quite awestruck because by that time, almost a full battle
was on at The Taj in Mumbai. I could not believe my eyes and kept switching
from one channel to the other. And as I surfed, the enormity and the vastness
of the tragedy unfolded. I remained glued to the TV till almost 6 or 7 a.m.
Finally, I had to go to sleep, only to wake up some hours later but the picture
on the telly had still not changed. And then, it went on and on and on…

How does one divorce oneself from such real grief. Well, you can switch off the
television but how do you switch off your own mind, your heart, your soul? It
could be me. I could have been there or one of my loved ones. I and my family
have absolute fond memories of Bombay, now forcibly called Mumbai. My sister
got her education there and worked there for many years. My brother's sasural
is there. And I have visited the city a zillion times.

I could never afford staying at The Taj but always made it a point to visit its
Coffee Shop overlooking the sea and the magnificent Gateway of India. At the
Trident, I have stayed many a times. One of the things that most of you
wouldn't know is that it has one of the most disabled-friendly toilet anywhere
in the world! Also, the largest. The room was so-so-so accessible that leaving
the routine features aside, you could even draw or open the curtains by merely
pressing a few buttons on a remote control, sitting in your bed. While it may
seem funny or odd to some of you, ask me as a paraplegic as to what a delight
such little facilities are. I truly wish all our hoteliers and developers were
as humane as the Oberois are.

The Sea Attack in Mumbai has finally ended. The burst of the AK 47s has given
way to a loud chatter. Switch on any television screen and people are speaking
loudly. Generally, people are angry, upset and above all, helpless. Can we
change the system? Is it possible for us to change the system?

Some basic questions continue to haunt:

a.. How come we were caught so off guard? Especially, with all the
intelligence inputs available much in advance.
b.. Why did it take NSG 9 hours to get there?
c.. Why did it take 67 hours for NSG, Army and Navy, not to mention Mumbai's
police force combined to kill a mere 9 terrorists?
d.. Were there many more? How come they escaped and where did they escape to?
While one was/ is coming to grips with the tragedy of almost 200 people dead
and hundreds injured, came two more shockers: (1) The Deputy Chief Minister of
Maharashtra, RR Patil said, "Such small incidents do happen in big cities". (2)
The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Vilasrao Deshmukh visited The Taj to inspect
its scarred remains and decided to bring his son along, who is a mere second
rate film actor, called Ritesh Deshmukh. The son, in turn, decided to bring
along his friend, a third rate film maker by the name Ram Gopal Verma. What
saved India from committing mass suicide, woh bhi chullu bhar pani mein, is the
fact that Ram Gopal Verma did not take Urmila Matondkar along or whosoever his
latest 'muse' is!

Horrible. The Nation has a lot to introspect.

I feel good when I see people angry. Anger is the catalyst that leads to
change. If you are not angry, then you are content and that contentment
invariably leads to status quo, even lethargy.

We the disabled people of India were angry too. Angry at being neglected. Angry
because this Nation still does not treat us as equal citizens. Angry because
inspite of all the lip service, only Sminu Jindal can "inaugurate" the fourth
or fifth edition of the ramp at Qutab Minar; and Sanjeev Sachdeva/ Anjalee
Agarrwal can endorse Delhi Metro to be disabled friendly when a significant
number of its stations are completely inaccessible. Angry because basic
education is out of reach for 98% of disabled children. Angry because inspite
of all the noise made by UGC and the promises made by our HRD Minister, not one
of our 300+ Universities are accessible to a wheelchair user like me. Angry
because a Nation that produces the world's best bicycles, has till date not
been able to manufacture

[AI] Braille Made Compulsory For BED Curriculum

2008-12-03 Thread shahnaz
Braille made compulsory for BEd curriculum
Priya Ramakrishnan
Wednesday, December 03, 2008 03:49 IST
Visually challenged students will now have a reason to smile, thanks
to the University
Grants Commission (UGC), which has made Braille a compulsory subject
for the BEd
curriculum, thereby helping students who study in regular schools
under the system
of Integrated Education System.
The National Association for the Blind (NAB), which supports students
studying under
the Integrated Education System, welcomed the move. NAB director K
Ramakrishnan said,
"As part of inclusive education, the teachers at regular schools will
have to teach
the visually impaired children too. Since these students understand
Braille as a
medium of communication, it is mandatory that the teacher should have
good understanding
of Braille."
The move will benefit those children who are now enrolled in regular
schools and
find it hard to cope with studies without their teachers knowing
Braille. This is
one of the first moves to promote inclusive education system, which
emphasises on
disabled students studying along with regular children. "This
initiative will provide
opportunities for special children to be included in the general
education system,"
said Pallavi Shankar, supervisor of Integrated Education Scheme.
However, the change will be applicable only from the next academic
year. But principal
of Aishabai College of Education, Arundhati Chavan is unsure whether
Braille can
be included in the curriculum by the next academic year. "We have not
been sent any
circular, but the initiative will benefit many students. The UGC has
not worked out
any curriculum. It is doubtful whether it can be included in B.Ed
programme by next
year."
