Re: [AI] Nasty computer worm

2009-01-24 Thread Subramani L
This is no self-advertisement, but more to inform folks that some of us
are actually concerned about open source, or, shall I say Free and Open
Source. Read on to know why:

Deccan Herald, Cyber Space

 Darwinian or Marxist?

L Subramani

What do you think of piracy?

Richard Stallman, considered the father of the free software movement,
provided an amusing and thought-provoking answer to this question.
"Piracy," Stallman said during his public speech in Bangalore on
Saturday (December 13), "is totally wrong, because it is wrong to attack
ships on sail."

If the person posing the question happens to get smarter and asks
specifically about software and music piracy, Stallman gave an even
better answer: "Pirates never attack ships with software and music, they
do it with guns."

In Stallman's opinion, piracy is one of the terms invented as a means of
attacking freedom and "social solidarity" of a community that needs to
be rejected. "Breaking any agreement isn't the right thing to do, but if
a software vendor compares your urge to share things you like with your
friends with attacking a ship, the idea deserves to be denounced,"
Stallman declared during his public speech, to the applause of the
crowd.

Without doubt, the idea of 'free' software is to think about software
development/distribution from the user's point of view. The freedom to
run, to study the source code, to modify and to share and distribute the
copies with others would make sense to a user. But to what extent such
things can be demanded in an era of branding and 'big money' technology
is a question that still lingers after all the convincing arguments.

For a fact, Stallman himself doesn't oppose the idea of doing business
by selling software, but he wants those developing/selling software
products to follow the 'freedoms' stringently. Perhaps his contention
that people are so occupied to buy something that can run on their
machines that they forget their rights, could be valid. But you can't
help asking if it is so wrong for certain product vendors to monitor
their user's system in order to learn how best they can customise their
product for them or to prevent copies from being distributed without
license-the only way he can ensure the sales of his software.

As Stallman himself observes we may not be caring too much since we
often don't understand the implications of software licensing. Until
recently, it never occurred to many people the implications of selling
their old PCs without making sure private data doesn't remain in the
machine's hard disk. Experts have also pointed to the dangers of signing
'privacy policies' of web services without giving a good reading. But
should we be so 'extremist' in our response, as Stallman suggests, to
the extent of rejecting proprietary software and embrace fully the free
software? The answer came that same evening from Jimmy Wales, founder of
Wikipedia, the largest knowledge source in the world. Wales has provided
the best working model of Stallman's idea by making Wikipedia an open
platform to freely create, share and modify content.

Though Wales confesses to be more of a "Stallmanist" in his approach, he
agrees he isn't so radicalist in developing the online knowledge system
with contents from more than 200 languages that rivals the much powerful
encyclopedias such as Britannica.

"Free software is an approach to creation and distribution of
software/soft content," Wales said. "There is often a tension existing
between the two (free and proprietary software) . We can no longer
imagine, for instance, that an individual would create a software system
that would be purchased for millions of dollars. This is as absurd as
saying large vendors would make software systems totally open source. So
somewhere they should learn to co-exist."

And there are reasons to think that free and proprietary software models
can co-exist. It is hard, for instance, to reject Stallman's argument
that school children should be taught in free software so that they are
not made undue dependents on just one proprietary system.

Just how they learn about leaves of plants by closely examining them,
they can learn about how a software works by studying its source code,
which is possible with a free software system in place.

But it is also hard to think of software development advancing without a
proprietary model. What most users can do perhaps is to insist vendors
to be less intrusive. Stallman argues that businesses should do more
than protecting their interest.

"Businesses must give products which are of use to people and should not
hold them for ransom by unacceptable practices," Stallman said. "Today
software products install spy programmes to see what a user is doing and
vendors force users to create content on their programmes, instead of
selling a copy of their software to them. Such things compromise user's
rights and we must insist our rights with such vendors." To what extent
vendors would listen to that is anyo

In many places I have heard people refer to persons without sight as "A

Are people who cannot see a separate species like Tiger, Man, Blind, Lion,

This is my personal view as a communicator that people without sight must

I tend to agree with you entirely. I guess while pointing out the problem
with "a blind and blinds" I myself made an error in expression. But then if
the word blind has to be used with regards to a person, it should be used as
an adjective and not as a noun. But then when it comes to good

welcome back aisha in the world of internet!

hope your days have been going grate, and i'd like to wish you belated
a very happy new year on behalf of accessindia.

getting back on to the point, i'll try and explain what i know, and
i'll be glad if other members have any corrections, additions, and
updations to make.

" First:

From advotisements to campaigns and holders to general communications

people can be heard talking about something call bandwidth.
Well I know that's related to internet speed, but still confused about
it's proper connotation in actual means.
Could anyone explain it for me in simple words as I got bamboozled
while reading it's definition on internet pages."

in very simple words, your bandwidth is the net and the actual speed
your internet service provider ( BSNL, for example is providing you).
note that bandwidth is dependent on digitel signals, hence is never
constant.

and most of the time, is comparatively lesser then actual bandwidth
promised by your provider.

so, if you hear " bandwidth 256 kbps, you are nearly going to actually
get the net bandwidth anywhere from 200 to 240 kbps ( kilo bits per
second )

further more, your bandwidth, can be logically divided in 2 main
streems namely, upStreem, and downStreem.

upstreem:

the upstreem is that part of your bandwidth, which determines at what
speed you can upload/send the data from your computer to other
computers/servers.

think it as, the part of your bandwidth used when you upload files,
send emails,, fill up online forums, and any outbound traffic you can
think of.

downStreem:

this determines your download/inbound strength of your connection.

it is used when you open webpages( as the server sends page to your
browser ), download files, etc.

generally, your uploads/upStreem, and downloads/Downstreem, is
specified in terms of kilo bites ( not bits)

a hundred million $ question, what is the difference between a kilo
bit, and a kilo bite?

a bit is the smallest chunk of binary data, say, either 0, or 1, in
binary language.

for an example, "00100" this instruction is of 5 bits.

bites, on the other hand, is equal to 8 bits.

8 bits = 1 bite.

keeping this concept under consideration, your download speeds, or
your upload speeds, are 1 8th time of your total bandwidth.

example, if you have total bandwidth of 256 kbps,( kilo bits per
second), your downloads will range almost near to 30/32 Kbps( kilo
bites)

further more, your service provider may have adjusted both streems as
they see fit. they can make downStreem very fast, and upstreem very
slow, or vice-versa

this is the answers to questions like, my webpage opens very fast, or,
i can send files very fast, but my download is very slow, y?

or, " i have faster downloads then my browsing speed, my web pages
opens very slow, y?

generally, the service providers doesn't tempers much with this, and
your up and downstreem is equal.

note also, with the limited data plan, such as BSNL's 500 rs plan
which gives you data transfers of 1 gb, both your upStreem, and your
downStreem is calculated in that 1 gb.

so, even if a user never downloads any songs etc, but still opens
hundreds of websites in a day, they will likely to get a pretty hefty
billing amount since they are using their upStreem.

rest, if i'm missing on something, accessindians can further enlighten
you in this matter.

Second:
how to join a incoming call in the already going conference?

now that's easy.

whenever you are talking to some1, and another call comes and you want
to join that call to the current call, just hit alt. arrow right to
call menu, and arrow down till you here, " accept this call and join
to current conference " or something similar to this.
hit enter, and there you are, talking in a call conference.

if you have any further queries, feel free to ask.

with warm regards,

ruchir

Re: [AI] What we call ourself!

2009-01-24 Thread Amarjit Powar

Hello AccessIndian friends,

Do we not have any euphenisms in Hindi for a blind person? What about "na
ankhan" OR "iz ki nazaar/roshni kumm hai"... Labelling a person who can't
totally see as "a blind person" in all modernity is too crude and rustic as
it doesn't take into consideration the sensitivities of the blind person.
He/she may be visually blind, but he/she is a person first.

This is my personal view as a communicator that people without sight
must be referred to as Blind person or as blind people and not as a
blind.

Please note that this mail is not a personal attack on any individual.
I thought I would take the liberty of pointing out this commonly made
error.

With best regards,

George

George,

I always thought that the term "a blind" was more of a gramatical error than
anything else.

there is a link "horoscope". here you can find the zodiac signs, and other

Dear Mr. Satguru Rathi,

Greetings from Advocacy Committee of AICB!

I am posting this mail on the access India list also so that those who
need

it can separately write to me.

The earlier Circular on the TA rules which allowed Blind/Disabled Govt.
employees an allowance ranging from Rs. 75 to 800 for different cadres of
officers was issued on 3rd October 1997. I hope that must be available
with

you and other readers.

However after the sixth pay commission, it has been doubled for Blind
employees in the Central Govt. vide new OM dated 29th August 2008. I am
enclosing the latest circular duly signed as per your telephonic request.
However readers at AI list can send me a separate mail and I shall send
the

same to you directly.

regards,

Subhash Chandra Vashishth
Advocate
Member-Advocacy & Employment Committee,
All India Confederation of the Blind

Copy to: Mr. JL Kaul, Secretary General AICB - for your information and
records.

 Good evening sir!

Sorry to trouble you again. I am afraid I could not find the circular on
DOPT's website

www.persmin.nic.in. Therefore I request you to please help me either by
mailing it on the same ID or giving me the URL from where I can download
this.

I shall be very grateful to you.

2009-01-24 Thread Shiv Pathak

Dear members,

I have gone through the relevant circular. Actually, it is Office Memorandum
issued by Ministry of Finance (Department of Expenditures) in supersession of
its previous OM issued in 1997. This wo'nt be applicable in case of Bank
employees, as there is nothing mentioned about it.

All members are free to share their valuable opinions for ensuring its
implementation on Bank employees.

Regards.

Please let me know how do i set settings in Jaws help. So that when
ever I use control+alt key+page down or page up I can increase or
decrease jaws speech speed at any point of time.

Your help will be highly appreciated.
