Re: [AI] Governments, parties neglecting disabled citizens: CPI-M

2009-04-03 Thread Dinesh Kaushal
There is no certainty of that, if a person with disability starts persuing
his / her own agenda after becoming a union minister, who could stop him?
Nomination is almost always a bad idea.

Probably the time is coming when geographic representation needs to be
supplimented with representation based on specialization. Our current
political system is based on geography, where there are MLAs and MPs from an
area. But there is a lot common between the persons with disabilities than
persons residing in one area.

The geographic representation was a compromise as there were few ways to
communicate with one another if you lived apart, but with mass media and
internet, I guess it is not that hard now.

BTW, Mr. Jaypal Reddy is a person with disability, but he prefers to stay
away from issue of persons with disability, probably he does not want to be
labelled with a nich population.

Governments, parties neglecting disabled citizens: CPI-M

 Thaindian News
New Delhi, March 30 (IANS) The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)
Monday accused the successive governments and the mainstream political
 parties of neglecting disabled citizens.
Successive governments and mainstream political parties have utterly
failed
disabled citizens by ignoring and neglecting their issues, said CPI-M
politburo member Brinda Karat, while releasing the party's pamphlets for
women, Dalits, tribals and disabled here.

The Congress-led government's slogan of 'inclusive growth' rings hollow
when seen in relation to the rights, needs and requirements of the
disabled
or differently abled population in India, even though they constitute at
least six percent of the population, she said.

According to the CPI-M, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government's
record on providing job opportunities for the disabled had been dismal.

It noted Finance Minister P. Chidambaram had announced a scheme of
providing
100,000 jobs per annum to persons with disabilities, with a proposed
outlay
of Rs.18 billion (Rs.1800 crore) during the 11th Plan in the 2006-07
Budget.

However, Chidambaram himself admitted some time later that not a single
recruitment has been made six months after the scheme was announced, the
 CPI-M said.

The CPI-M called for a special employment guarantee scheme to be designed
for disabled people in all parts of the country that provides them
suitable
employment, ensuring at least minimum wages throughout the year.

The Persons With Disabilities (PWD) Act provides three percent reservation
in jobs in all government and public sector units for the disabled. The
share of the disabled against the total strength in actual terms is barely
0.44 percent as against their estimated population of 5-6 percent, it
said.

Greetings from my end!

Today while applying filter in a datasheet in Excel, I realized that our friend

submenu and then will be able to know if there is any filter is activated. Any
solution to this rather than doing above mentioned procedure?

[AI] my thoughts on yahoo mail mobile version.

2009-04-03 Thread Amar Jain
Listers,

All know that I was looking for yahoo mail mobile version.

today I searched and got it.

If you type:

m.yahoo.com/mail/

then the mobile version of yahoo loads into the browser.

Sign in, and you will see inbox.

I saw 15 messages per page.

But there you will not find check boxes for selecting the messages and the
buttons like delete etc.

If you wish to select messages and delete, then there is a link manage
messages, which lets you select the messages and delete, spam move.

For going to spam, you need to go to the link All folders, which gives you
options like Trash, Spam etc. Select, and there you go.

Still gmail mobile version is better than that of yahoo because from one place
only you can do whatever you want at least delete, spam etc.
Regards,
Amar Jain.

 dear listers
Is it possible to book train ticket online availing concession.
I tried booking ETicket using the IRCTC.CO.IN but was not given the
option to specify concession. If there is no such provision, don't you
think it's high time that we collectively demanded extending ETicket
facility to the VI and other PWDS. This will be a great help as it
reduces a lot of unnecessary travel and inconvenience. This will also
help many of us as some of the booking clarks are not aware of the
rules and regulations GOVERNING concession to PWDs.
I have faced some problems in booking tickets with concession from
several railway stations in hyderabad, to be specific Lingampally,
Chandaanagar and secanderabad stations. After my repeated attempts,
the booking counter at lingampally, which was the closest to my
location, became fairly responsible and helpful. Now that I've shifted
my residence I am facing it with my new local station.
looking forward to have your experiences and thoughts

My point is that the representative should be accountable, just nominating
someone doesn't do that. We have still not recovered from the problems
created by someone who was disabled but created rules such as less than 50

Nomination is almost always a bad idea.

Probably the time is coming when geographic representation needs to be
supplimented with representation based on specialization. Our current
political system is based on geography, where there are MLAs and MPs from
an
area. But there is a lot common between the persons with disabilities than
 persons residing in one area.

The geographic representation was a compromise as there were few ways to
communicate with one another if you lived apart, but with mass media and
internet, I guess it is not that hard now.

BTW, Mr. Jaypal Reddy is a person with disability, but he prefers to stay
away from issue of persons with disability, probably he does not want to
be
 labelled with a nich population.

According to the CPI-M, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)
government's
record on providing job opportunities for the disabled had been dismal.

The Persons With Disabilities (PWD) Act provides three percent
reservation
in jobs in all government and public sector units for the disabled. The
share of the disabled against the total strength in actual terms is
barely
0.44 percent as against their estimated population of 5-6 percent, it
 said.

Also check the start-up folder to make sure that there isn't any icon
related to Windows messenger. Basically any icon lying on that folder can
trigger the associated program to start automatically when your system
starts. Also stop the service associated with the program and perhaps it is

Hi Shashi,
All of us have spent time and energy to reply to your query. It seems that
you havent spent that kind of time and energy in reading accessindia mails.
I am quite aware of when you became a member of this group.
You were a member when there was a major discussion on how to write on blogs

I suggest that you now go to the accessindia archives and download them.

You can create your own blog on the blogspot or the wordpress. you can get
translation job by creating an account on http://www.proz.com
Connect yourself with the local Radio channels, AM/FM and you can find many
contracts like for writing stories or other features for different
programmes. If you have a good braille reading, you can record the stories
written by you in your own voice. For such contracts, you have to go through
an audition test. the rules slightly differ from place to place but here in
Delhi, the environment is in the favour of the visually Impaired.
Last elections, I worked as a local promoter for a political party. For
this, they have provided me an Autorikshaw and a loudspeaker. the driver
escorted the vehicle from one place to another and I kept on praising the

2009-04-03 Thread Geetha Shamanna
Hmm, this is interesting -- working as local promoters for political
parties. This is something that blind people can easily do, and those who
are looking for employment can also make a few bucks out of it. We should
also perhaps coax political parties into inducting blind/disabled members
who would in return campaign for them in the disabled community. This would
help the disabled members build up a base and eventually contest elections.

Nomination is almost always a bad idea.

Probably the time is coming when geographic representation needs to be
supplimented with representation based on specialization. Our current
political system is based on geography, where there are MLAs and MPs from
an
area. But there is a lot common between the persons with disabilities
than

persons residing in one area.

According to the CPI-M, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)
government's

record on providing job opportunities for the disabled had been dismal.

It noted Finance Minister P. Chidambaram had announced a scheme of

providing

100,000 jobs per annum to persons with disabilities, with a proposed

outlay

of Rs.18 billion (Rs.1800 crore) during the 11th Plan in the 2006-07

Budget.

However, Chidambaram himself admitted some time later that not a single
recruitment has been made six months after the scheme was announced,
the

CPI-M said.

The CPI-M called for a special employment guarantee scheme to be
designed

for disabled people in all parts of the country that provides them

suitable

employment, ensuring at least minimum wages throughout the year.

The Persons With Disabilities (PWD) Act provides three percent
reservation

in jobs in all government and public sector units for the disabled. The
share of the disabled against the total strength in actual terms is
barely

0.44 percent as against their estimated population of 5-6 percent, it

said.

the places/institutions where I can buy WhiteCane from. I have asked
some of my VI friends who are students like me without much result. If
some of you could throw some light on this issue it'd be much
appriciated.

Now, a robot that can read your mind!

April 3, 2009

Text: Ian Rowley

Don't expect to see it in a car at your neighborhood Honda dealer
soon, but Japan's No. 2 automaker is working on some pretty nifty
technology that can
control robots by the power of thought alone.

At a Tokyo briefing on March 31, the company introduced reporters to a
system that reads people's minds - and then allows those people to
control a bipedal
robot.

According to the company, the robot, named Asimo (advanced step in
innovative mobility), has a 90 per cent success rate at recognising
and then carrying
out four commands.

 Subject: [AI] On Braille labelling

 Friends,
As a computer user, I have many CD's which in times, I find it difficult
to locate the exact cd I need in a given instance. Is there any way to
put Braille labels to these cd's? Please let me know if there are other
alternatives to organise cd's. It is very difficult to catalog cd's. I
need your suggestions because I spent hours to identify a badly needed cd.
