[AI] Mobile number portability at under Rs 300?

2009-05-04 Thread sweety.bhalla
Mobile number portability at under Rs 300?

PTI | May 01, 2009 | 14:01 IST

Consumers may not have to pay more than Rs 300 to change from one mobile
service provider to another while keeping the phone number intact, a facility
likely to start from September 20.

It will be one time cost for subscribers seeking portability but the charge is
not yet finalised by the department of telecommunication and the telecom
Regulatory Authority of India, on which they are working.

So far, it seems the charges would not be more than Rs 300 but this could be
even below Rs 200, sources close to the developments told PTI.

Deliberations by the government is being carried out to keep cost and charges
at a level so as not to discourage subscribers willing to change their service
provider, an optional facility, and at the same time make the service providers
a viable business model, they said.

The charge is directly linked to the number of subscribers, who would seek the
change in service provider out of the total mobile user base of about 400
million.

The DoT has offered licence to Syniverse Technologies for north and western
region and MNP Interconnection Telecom Ltd for eastern and southern region to
rollout number portability across the country.

There is no comparable market in the 50-60 countries which has adopted number
portability as the pre-paid subscriber base in the country is almost 90 per
cent of the total subscriber base and has low average revenue per user.

Majority of the countries had initially levied charge to mobile subscribers
seeking to switch their service provides but five years later majority of them
were forced to waive it and the same is paid by the winning mobile operator,
MNP Interconnection Telecom chairman (designate) and president,Interconnection
Solutions, Telcordia, Richard Jacowleff said.

Telcordia is a US-based telecom solutions provider and is the 74 per cent stake
holder in Indian JV MNP.

The combined investment in the first phase by MNP Interconnection Telecom and
Syniverse Technologies is estimated to be $20 million for installing and
managing
number portability clearing house and centralised datacenter.

Both the companies hope to launch the service on the same day -- tentatively
September 20 for the first phase of launch.

However, that would be possible if telecom operators are also geared with the
requisite upgradation of system for the new system, the sources said.

In the first phase, the facility would be launched in the telecom cricles of
Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Andra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and
Maharastra.

In second phase, the service would be launched in the rest of the 14 circles
would be within a year.

Syniverse India operation head Sanjay Kasturia said global average seeking
porting in the first year would be 3-4 per cent.

We will keep our infrastructure ready for 15-20 per cent of total mobile user
base initially and scale it up in accordance to the demand, Jacowleff said.

for signing on cheque books i have made a customised signature guide.
this is like a stencil where the stencil aligns with the bottom and
right edges of the cheque, the rectangular area is cut out wherein one
can affix his signatures.
Yes! to make the stencil one does require sighted help initially.

Exactly that is the way a signature guide is prepared. It is a small frame
with space for a signature. It helps keep the line straight. you will still
need help to place the guide on the correct line. I used a floppy disk for a
scale. Since floppy has become obsolete, I find it very difficult. At times
I use a comb or a cigarette packet, but they are not suitable, or not decent
 either.

I am afraid, a signature is more risky than an LTI if you consider the
 possibility of a cheat.

[AI] Is Twitter full of imposters?

2009-05-04 Thread pradeep banakar
3 May, 2009, 0843 hrs IST,ANI

WASHINGTON: Thinking of creating a Twitter account for yourself? Well,
before registering on the site, you should be familiar with the term:
'Twit

Experts have said that those 140-character tweets on a user's
profile could also be the work of an imposter, who can be called a
social identity thief in this case.

And while celebrities, athletes, politicians and media personalities
are flocking the site, it's becoming increasingly difficult to gauge
the real thing from a phoney one. Former hacking whiz Kevin Mitnick
has said that it is very easy to register fake accounts at sites like
Twitter.

It's easy to do, there's no identity verification, Fox News quoted
him as saying. He added, Anyone could set up an email account, change
a letter or two and then pretend to be you. Imagine someone
influential setting up a Facebook page and asking for resumes. It
could be a head-hunter who is impersonating a CEO.

When Twitter representatives were contacted to comment on the security
issue, they failed to respond and answer queries as to how many
profiles have been shut down for violations of its impersonation
policy.

Twitter allows parody impersonations if a reasonable person would be
aware that it's a joke, and thus it's already full of fake profiles of
stars like Tina Fey, Christopher Walken, Condoleezza Rice, Bill Gates,
Osama bin Laden and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steve Reich.

Security and social media experts have said that the ramifications of
phoney profiles can be serious. Let's say it was an up-and-coming
artist or someone like Britney Spears who has a lot of public
appearances and they 'tweet' that the Dallas concert is cancelled,
'sorry folks,' said Robert Hansen, president of SecTheory, a security
consulting firm.

He added, That can really drag someone through the mud. Or Tom Hanks
could say he's cancelling the red carpet appearance and drag an entire
event down.

Rick Sorkin, a strategist for enter: new media, a New York-based
social media marketing firm, said impersonating an individual or brand
fundamentally opposes the very idea behind social networking. But, if
one has become a victim of social identity theft, Twitter has advised
them to contact its Terms of Service group.

[AI] Web-based malicious attacks on rise in India: study

2009-05-04 Thread Renuka Warrier
The Hindu News Update Service

News Update Service
Tuesday, May 5, 2009 : 0345 Hrs

Sci. Tech.
Web-based malicious attacks on rise in India: study

Bangalore (IANS): India remains a soft target for Internet threats, as evident
from the steep rise in malicious attacks from web-based sources originating
mostly from the US and China, a study by global security solutions provider
Symantec has revealed.

Computers in India are set to witness increased malicious activities due to
rapid growth of Internet infrastructure, a burgeoning broadband population
and rampant software piracy, Symantec India managing director Vishal Dhupar
said.

According to the Symentac Internet Security Threat report, which is based on
data pooled by Internet sensors, first-hand research and monitoring of hacking
communications during January-December 2008, computers from the US and China
were the leading source of web-based attacks targeting India.

Web surfing remained the primary source of new infections in 2008. Attackers
rely on customised malicious code toolkits to develop and distribute their
threats, targeting confidential information of computer users.

Unless enterprises improve security protocols and measures to counter
malicious activities, India will continue to be a soft target of Internet
threats,
Mr. Dhupar said.

The report noted that India ranked among the top three countries in the
Asia-Pacific-Japan (APJ) region that was subjected to malicious code activity by
volume as the country had the fifth highest number of broadband subscribers
(eight million) in the region.

Malicious code is a new breed of Internet threat that cannot be efficiently
controlled by conventional anti-virus software. The code can enter network
drives
and spread. It can cause network and mail server overload by sending e-mail
messages, stealing data and passwords, deleting document files, e-mail files
or passwords and even re-formatting hard drives.

Internet users in India also faced a serious threat from worms and viruses
attacks. In the APJ region, India ranked first with nine of the top 10 malicious
codes found consisting 55 percent worms and 15 percent viruses. These infesting
codes disabled security related processes and stole confidential information.

In the global context, the study found India ranked high on these vectors of
infection, as evident from the damage the Downadup/Conficker worm caused to
thousands of computers across the country during the initial stages of attack.

Enterprises without protective strategies are likely to see worms and viruses
infiltrate their environments and access their information and infrastructure.
Indian enterprises have to adopt ingress and egress filtering on perimeter
devices to prevent unwanted activity, said Dhupar.

Around 65 percent of worms and viruses in Indian enterprises are propagated
through the file sharing/executables mechanism.

This indicates that endpoint security and policy are still missing in many
organisations as this level of security protection would have allowed IT
administrators
to scan removable drives for threats. A large number of infections in India
have also occurred due to file-sharing programmes, free downloads and freeware
and shareware versions of software, Dhupar noted.

Similarly, with an average of 836 bot attacks per day, the study found 103,812
computers were infected in the country during 2008.

Bot (short form for robot) is a malicious code (computer programme) that comes
with an e-mail attachment sent to intended users by hackers for infecting
and damaging their personal computers or servers in enterprises.

When a spam mail is opened, the user is enticed to click the attachment with
tempting words for viewing the link. Unknowingly, the bot in the link attacks
the computer when opened.

According to the report, India had an average of 836 bots per day during 2008
and there were 103,812 distinct bot-infected computers observed in the country
during the period.

India also saw a huge surge in bot command and control servers to 70 in 2008
from 40 in 2007.

Bot command-and-control servers are computers that botnet owners use to relay
commands to bot-infected computers on their networks.

The sharp increase in bot-infected computers in India pointed towards low
adoption of security measure that includes anti-malware, intrusion prevention
and intrusion detection.

Among cities with the highest number of bot-infected computers, Mumbai topped
with 37 percent followed by Chennai at 24 percent and Delhi seven percent.

The report is compiled by the Symantec security technology and response
organisation, which includes security response, a worldwide team of security
engineers,
threat analysts, and researchers.

With global response centres located the world over, the organisation monitors
malicious code reports from 130 million systems across the Internet, receives
data from 240,000 network sensors in

[AI] How to boost your PC speed

2009-05-04 Thread pradeep banakar

May 5th 2009

Frustrated with slow computer speed? Hate it when your computer slows
down while you access the Internet.

And you simply bang your head when your computer takes ages to search
your files. You desperately wish that your PC could gain some speed.

Don't worry. You can easily overcome this.

Here are some easy-to-do tips which can boost up your PC speed.

Clean up disk errors
Whenever a programme crashes or you experience some power outage, your
PC may create some errors on hard disk. This slows down computer
speed.

For this, check and clean any errors on the computer hard disk.

To run Disk Check go to My Computer. Now, right-click on the drive you
want to check for errors and click Properties.

In Properties dialogue box, click on the Tools tab. In the
Error-Checking section, press the Check Now button. Access Check Disk
to check for errors on your computer.

Depending on the errors, it may take up to an hour to check and clean.
This must be followed at least once a week.

Remove temporary files
Your PC stores temporary files whenever you browse through the Web.
Also, your PC stores temporary files when you work on programmes like
Microsoft Word or Excel.

This ends up slowing down your PC speed. To overcome it you can use
the Windows Disk Cleanup screen to rid your PC of these dead files.

To run Disk Cleanup go to My Computer. Right click on the drive you
wish to check for errors and click Properties. In the Properties
dialogue box, click Disk Cleanup. You can also use Disk Cleanup to
clear unused files from your PC.

After scanning, the Disk Cleanup dialogue box lists the files you can
remove from your computer.

Organise your data
Often when you search files your PC takes a lot of time to track them.
This is because computer breaks files into pieces to increase the
speed of access and retrieval.

However, once updated, computer saves these files on the space
available on the hard drive, which results in fragmented files. This
makes your PC go slow because it then searches for all of the file's
parts.

You need a Disk Defragmenter programme to needle all your files back together.

For this, go to My Computer and right click on the drive you want to
check for error and click Properties.

In the Properties dialogue box, click the Tools tab, and then in the
Defragmentation section, click Defragment. In the Disk Defragmenter
dialog box, select the disk and then click Analyse.

After analysing your PC, the Disk Defragmenter pops up a message
asking whether you need to defragment your computer or not. Once you
defragement your PC, it will reorganise files by programme and size.

Install anti-virus
Biggest culprits behind slow PC performance are viruses and spyware.
Both end up reducing your PC speed. Not only this they can also
destroy your data and tamper files.

Also, with the 24X7 online environment, it is important to have
anti-virus and anti-spyware programmes installed for secure online
experience.

These programmes need to be frequently updated to avoid any attack on
your computer.

You can do a recee of the Net for popular anti-virus and anti-spyware
solutions. There are also several paid options like McAfee, Norton
Anti-virus and Trend Micro.

Reduce page history
Is your PC giving you trouble while accessing the Internet? Don't
worry. For Internet Explorer users, Microsoft has some rescue options
for faster Web browsing.

To improve your PC speed, first reduce the size of your Web page
history. For this go to Internet Explorer, and on the Tools menu click
on Internet Options. Then go to the History section and type in the
number of days you want to keep pages in history.

Preferably reduce the number of days as this will reduce the size of
your Web page history.

Automate Microsoft updates
For Windows users, Microsoft frequently release updates which may help
boost up your PC speed. For this activate automate Microsoft Update so
that your computer downloads and installs all the latest updates
without giving you any trouble of finding any new releases.

Go to Start menu and click Control Panel. In the Automatic Updates
dialog box, check the Automatic check box. If your PC finds any new
updates, it will automatically download and install them. This will
help you keep your computer up to date.

information sent across the network.

Corel WordPerfect
WordPerfect is a word processing application developed by Corel. The
office software helps create documents, spreadsheets and
presentations, manages email, and share work seamlessly with Microsoft
Office compatibility and built-in PDF tools.
