[AI] 8 new features in Gmail

8 new features in Gmail
Google may have disappointed some of its users lately with frequent
outages, however, the company is all set to please them with a slew of
new features. The company recently added eight new features in Gmail.

Presently, a third in global email marketshare, Gmail is striving hard
to increase its turf. So here's looking into all the new features that
Gmail has added in the recent past in its endeavour to climb up the
ranking ladder.
Import mails and contacts from other accounts
Find the process of importing your emails and contacts from other
accounts to Gmail troublesome? Gmail's just added a new feature that
promises to simplify the process for you.

Google has added a new feature which will let Gmail users easily
import all their emails and contacts from Hotmail, Yahoo, or AOL
accounts. All a user needs to do is enter his Webmail account details
(username and password) into Google's service and over the next 24 to
48 hours, all his emails and contacts will be automatically imported
to his Gmail account.

Google now also lets you test drive gmail. The company offers a 30-day
test-drive mode for users to decide whether they like Gmail or not.
The feature, presently available to new users, is likely to be
extended to current users soon.
Google Search comes to Gmail
Search engine giant Google has added a search widget in Gmail, which
enables users to search the web without opening a new browser.

The new feature shows a search box onto the left side of Gmail inbox.
When a user types in a search, a window (like a chat window) appears
at the bottom of the screen with search results.

The feature can be activated by clicking settings tab, followed by
selecting the Labs feature, and enabling the Google Search feature
option. Google says that new feature aims to help users to copy and
insert any required URL and send it to others using email or Gmail
chat.
PowerPoint and TIFF file viewing
After adding online viewing option for PDFs, Google has extended its
support to TIFF and Microsoft PowerPoint document formats too.

With this functionality, users can now view TIFF and PPT files online,
directly in the browser, without having to save the files to the
computer. There is also no need to buy, install, or wait for any
software to start up.

This means users can view all PDFs, PowerPoint (PPT) presentations as
well as .TIFF-formatted images that have been received as attachments
in Gmail's HTML, multi-page document viewer.

According to software engineer Marc Miller, "Gmail has rolled out this
viewer with a richer set of features than the older 'View as
slideshow' version: users can now zoom in and out, select text to copy
and paste, and 'print' the presentation to a PDF document. And, unlike
the old version, we no longer require you to have a Flash plugin
installed on your browser."
Suggest more recipients
You may have many a times mistakenly left someone important out of an
email? Or you keep on thinking who all from your long list of contacts
need to be sent this mail? Gmail aims to solve this problem for you.
Gmail Labs new feature called "Suggest more recipients" is intended to
do just that.

On enabling the feature from the Labs tab under Settings, a user can
see a suggested recipients list while composing a message. Gmail will
suggest contacts that a user might want to include based on the group
of people they email often.
Inserting images
Here's a feature to help users get users rid of attaching images in
email. All that a user needs to do is just turn on "Inserting images"
from the Labs tab under Settings, and users will see a new toolbar
icon. On clicking the image icon, users can insert images in two ways:
by uploading image files from computer or giving image URLs.

Gmail doesn't show URL-based images in messages by default to protect
users from spammers. So if a user is sending mail to other Gmail
users, they will have to click "Display images below" or "Always
display images from ..." to see the embedded images.
Automatic message translation
Need help in reading that email from your French friend? Gmail's here
to help you.

Google is offering one-click automatic translation for Gmail in 41
languages. This will let Gmail users read emails in languages such as
Turkish, Thai and Estonian. To activate the feature go to the Settings
tab and then click the Labs tab. Here enable the Message Translation
option.

Jeff Chin, product manager for Google Translate says, "Each person can
write messages in their native language and the recipients can
translate the messages into their respective native languages."
Tasks in Calendar
For long users have been wanting integrated tasks list in Google
Calendar, especially after Google launched Tasks in Gmail Labs. Google
recently integrated Tasks into its Calendar service.

To enable the feature, a user needs to open Calendar and click on the
"Tasks" link on the left hand side. The usual task list will appear
with some Calendar-s

[AI] Fwd: announcement about a new site

2009-05-22 Thread Geetha Shamanna

From: Bernard Maldonado bern...@publicftp.com
To: b...@acb.org

About 2 and a half months ago, an idea was born in my head. So, like I
always do with a new idea, I evaluate the costs, potential customers,
requirements, and competition, among other factors. Once I answered all of
my questions, I started to bring the people together and get the project
underway.

This project had a special component; it's a bit controversial. I took
quite a bit of extra time to read the mailing lists, read the forums, read
about failed attempts to launch such a service, and all the comments back
and forth. Some people were quite vocal about their problems and issues.
One area that I paid close attention to was the criticisms, concerns, and
barriers. Indeed, there were many. BlindAD had a lot of information!

The site that I'm talking about is called Solona, which is a Human Asisted
CAPTCHA Solution Service. It exists to help visually impaired people solve
CAPTCHAS that are usually found on website registration pages. As you all
are fully aware, CAPTCHAS are usually not accessible.

Every step of the project implementation included the participation of blind
people. The steering committee is made of blind people. In fact, some of
the contributors and testers are from within the ranks of ACB state offices.
The service has been vetted, tested, documented, and has been in operation
for about 3 weeks now. The two biggest factors about Solona are the
privacy/security features, and that it works with any operating system and
any browser since there is no plug in or tool bar to install.

The site address is http://www.solona.net

Main points addressed in Solona (all of equal importance):
1. Privacy and Security
2. Efficiency and Effectiveness with minimal two way communication 3. Speed
and Response Time 4. OS independence and browser independence 5. Thorough
instructions and easy steps to follow 6. Full disclosure of how Solona works
and what happens to images 7. No cost to users. No levels of service based
on price.

I am pleased with the initial release of Solona. There will be ups and
downs, but so far, there are alot of happy users who have submitted images
for solution. In fact, it's already being used by Spanish speaking blind
people who have translated the important information in order to use the
site. Having said that, I always look for improvements and ways to provide
more.

This is probably the only time I will make an announcement about Solona.
I don't want to overrun the list with repeat messages. Having said that, I
am more than willing to have conversations with anyone who is interested in
knowing more, or would like further clarification about the site.

The site has quite a bit of information to offer about Solona.

I apologize for being long-winded in this message.

Thank you.
Bernard Maldonado

2009-05-22 Thread pamnani
Hi
Yes they are available in India. You can get a HP, Dell, Acer, Asus, Sony
and of course the Apple. they come in different sizes of body and screen,
colours and weights.
the catch is that they dont come for under $300 but are priced around Rs.
20,000 and more.

Some friends are using the netbooks and are quite satisfied.

Subject: [AI] Netbooks?

Hi all,

Just wondering whether mini notebooks , what is popularly known as netbooks
are available in India. I have not heard anyone mentioning it on the list. I
just bought a couple of them last week and they are really great! They come
preloaded with Windows XP home and the keyboard is almost like laptop. The
display is smaller in size. For example, I bought them with 8.9 inch and
that's reasonable enough even for a sighted person to use the system. The
only disadvantage is that they do not come with CD/DVD drives and henceforth
one has to get external ones. But in comparison to their advantages, I do
not mind having my netbook without CD drive. For example, Netbooks are the
only available PC models with Windows XP. Second, They are much lighter to
carry and under 3 LBS. I would say about 2 KG. The solid space drives are
lighter than hard drive and I actually whent for that. And of course, they
are under $300 and many standard brands on the PC world carry their
netbooks.

Regards,

Vetri.

Re: [AI] how to scan the pdf files with fine reader?

2009-05-22 Thread sheik haq
I assume that you have installed fine reader 9 which is the latest.
from the file menu choose "open image/pdf". Hence I am fully blind I
disable "show quick preview". note: In the same dialogue box, you can
spesify how many pages should be processed. This is a great feature
and very helpful for processing large documents. also note: fine
reader 9 opens PDF documents no matter whether it contains text or
scanned images. choose grayscale mode for best results. Patience is
required sometimes.

2009-05-22 Thread Jitendra
Sorry for the late reply, but my connection was off, for JAWS script
writing, it is required that you try all that has been said by ropakshi
and some other person, but the very importent thing is: you should know
to operate the software for which you wish to write JAWS scripts, from
various aspects including what information is available, what a sited
person gets from the software, and if blind user requires more than that
or some diferent information how to get and present it, this does not
clear things for you I know, but call me on skype, and I shall explain
you more and also give the book by ken goold, I have it, you may be
surprised to know: It was the first and only book I read and then
started scripting, as you can see scripts for goldwave, flash fxp ftp
client and some other scripts on www.ultrauniverse.co.cc by me and Ramkumar.

2009-05-22 Thread srinivasu
Hello,

Those who use Yahoo! Messenger as Instant Messenger (IM) extensively and
for long time, please contact me off list at sriniv...@srinivasu.org or on
my phone at (0) 9742 745478.

I am doing a survey for betterment of future versions which one of them
would be in pipeline to release.

PS: I will not reply to anyone who send in their response on the mailing
list; only I shall respond to people who contact offline. I would not want
to eat the traffic here:-)
Best,
Srinivasu
