[AI] Intel Adopts an Identity in Software

2009-05-26 Thread Subramani L
Intel Adopts an Identity in Software
By ASHLEE VANCE
Published: May 24, 2009

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Intel has worked hard and spent a lot of money
over the years to shape its image: It is the company that celebrates its
quest to make computer chips ever smaller, faster and cheaper with a
quick five-note jingle at the end of its commercials.

Doug Fisher, a vice president at Intel, says the smartphone market is
vital for the success of the company's Moblin system.

As Renee J. James of Intel puts it, You can't just throw hardware out
there into the world without accompanying software.

But as Intel tries to expand beyond the personal computer chip business,
it is changing in subtle ways. For the first time, its long unheralded
software developers, more than 3,000 of them, have stolen some of the
spotlight from its hardware engineers. These programmers find themselves
at the center of Intel's forays into areas like mobile phones and video
games.

The most attention-grabbing element of Intel's software push is a
version of the open-source Linux operating system called Moblin. It
represents a direct assault on the Windows franchise of Microsoft,
Intel's longtime partner.

This is a very determined, risky effort on Intel's part, said Mark
Shuttleworth, the chief executive of Canonical, which makes another
version of Linux called Ubuntu.

The Moblin software resembles Windows or Apple 's Mac OS X to a degree,
handling the basic functions of running a computer. But it has a few
twists as well that Intel says make it better suited for small mobile
devices.

For example, Moblin fires up and reaches the Internet in about seven
seconds, then displays a novel type of start-up screen. People will find
their appointments listed on one side of the screen, along with their
favorite programs. But the bulk of the screen is taken up by cartoonish
icons that show things like social networking updates from friends,
photos and recently used documents.

With animated icons and other quirky bits and pieces, Moblin looks like
a fresh take on the operating system. Some companies hope it will give
Microsoft a strong challenge in the market for the small, cheap laptops
commonly known as netbooks. A polished second version of the software,
which is in trials, should start appearing on a variety of netbooks this
summer.

We really view this as an opportunity and a game changer, said Ronald
W. Hovsepian, the chief executive of Novell, which plans to offer a
customized version on Moblin to computer makers. Novell views Moblin as
a way to extend its business selling software and services related to
Linux.

While Moblin fits netbooks well today, it was built with smartphones in
mind. Those smartphones explain why Intel was willing to needle
Microsoft.
Intel has previously tried and failed to carve out a prominent stake in
the market for chips used in smaller computing devices like phones. But
the company says one of its newer chips, called Atom, will solve this
riddle and help it compete against the likes of Texas Instruments and
Qualcomm.

The low-power, low-cost Atom chip sits inside most of the netbooks sold
today, and smartphones using the chip could start arriving in the next
couple of years.

To make Atom a success, Intel plans to use software for leverage. Its
needs Moblin because most of the cellphone software available today runs
on chips whose architecture is different from Atom's. To make Atom a
worthwhile choice for phone makers, there must be a supply of good
software that runs on it.

The smartphone is certainly the end goal, said Doug Fisher, a vice
president in Intel's software group. It's absolutely critical for the
success of this product.

Though large, Intel's software group has remained out of the spotlight
for years. Intel considers its software work a silent helping hand for
computer makers.

Mostly, the group sells tools that help other software developers take
advantage of features in Intel's chips. It also offers free consulting
services to help large companies wring the most performance out of their
code, in a bid to sell more chips.

Renee J. James, Intel's vice president in charge of software, explained,
You can't just throw hardware out there into the world.

Intel declines to disclose its revenue from these tools, but it is a
tiny fraction of the close to $40 billion in sales Intel racks up every
year.

Still, the software group is one of the largest at Intel and one of the
largest such organizations at any company.

In the last few years, Intel's investment in Linux, the main rival to
Windows, has increased. Intel has hired some of the top Linux
developers, including Alan Cox from Red Hat, the leading Linux seller,
last year. Intel pays these developers to improve Linux as a whole and
to further the company's own projects like Moblin.

Intel definitely ranks pretty highly when it comes to meaningful
contributions, Linus Torvalds, who created the core of Linux and
maintains

[AI] Moblin netbook Linux preview

2009-05-26 Thread Subramani L
Published on Computerworld Blogs (
http://blogs.computerworld.com)

Moblin netbook Linux preview
By Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols
Created May 25 2009 - 12:46pm

Intel's Moblin 2.0 Linux desktop [1] for netbooks is really still too
raw to be called a beta, but with a fresh take on what a desktop should
be, it's showing
great promise.

When Intel announced that it was turning its Moblin mobile Linux project
over to the Linux Foundation [2], I assumed that it had decided to walk
away from
the project. Then, Intel announced that it was partnering with Novell to
bring pre-installed Moblin desktops [3] to netbooks. At this point, I
was really
puzzled. But, then Intel released the new version of Moblin and their
moves suddenly made sense.

Intel wants to compete with its long-time partner Microsoft in the
operating system business. To do that, Intel wants broad support from
the Linux community.
Intel doesn't want Moblin to be 'Intel Moblin,' the company want it to
be Linux's Moblin with support from everyone.

Thus, what we have is a Linux desktop that's built on top of a Fedora
Linux [4] framework; uses GNOME [5] for its desktop and applications,
and will rely
on Novell/SUSE to get customized versions of the desktop pre-installed
on the Taiwanese OEM (original equipment manufacturers) netbooks. Its
main competition:
Windows 7 [6], but Google Android also looms as a desktop Linux [7]
challenger.

How does Moblin stack up? Well, the look is great, and it's not quite
like any other desktop I've ever seen. The closest thing I've seen to it
in recent
memory is gOS [8], which puts Google applications on top of an Ubuntu
Linux base [9].

Instead of giving you applications to choose from, Moblin gives you
functions from a top menu bar that's hidden until you need it. So, for
example, when
you boot Moblin, you don't see a desktop full of icons or menus, you see
your appointments and frequently used applications. The interface,
called M-Zone
is all about letting you get to your Internet functions as fast as
possible.

Note I say, 'functions,' not applications. Intel tries to make the
applications invisible. Instead of opening the Web browser, which is
based on Firefox
3.0.10, to see what's happening on your Twitter and Facebook accounts,
you can see what's what with you social network friends right from the
M-Zone interface.

You see Moblin is all about letting you use what you already use on the
Internet, and not letting either the operating system or the
applications get in
the way. I see Intel trying to do for the netbook desktop what Apple did
with the PC desktop: get out of the user's way so they can do what they
want to
do with the minimum of interference.

For Linux power users, and I'm one of them, who want to control every
last thing on my PC, this isn't that attractive a notion. But, I know
that for many
netbook users, who just want fast and easy Internet access, this could
be a real winner.

So, if you want to IM a buddy, watch a video, what-ever, Moblin tries to
make it as easy as possible. It does have some traditional applications,
like a
spreadsheet and word-processor, but they're not heavy-duty office suite
tools. The word-processor, for example is GNOME's gedit [10], which no
one will
ever mistake for OpenOffice Writer.

Moblin also uses virtual desktops, called zones, but it has a different
take on them. Instead of requiring you to create a virtual desktop,
they're created
on the fly when you need one. Want to keep all your Web activity in one
zone, and work on a report in another, just assign it to another zone,
and-pop!--the
new zone is created and your word processor is already there.

Does that sound difficult? It's not. Moblin is all about providing an
attractive, consistent look and ease of use. Sometimes that consistent
look, for long
time Linux users, will surprise you. For instance, some applications
won't offer all the options you expect them to have.

Some of this has been done to keep the look and feel of the interface
uniform, but it's also to make Moblin faster than fast. I've never seen
any operating
system, except for instant-on, embedded desktop Linuxes like SplashTop
[11], boot so quickly.

Once up, the desktop felt incredibly fast. If I didn't know I was
running it on 1.6GHz Aton equipped netbooks with 512MBs to 1 GB of RAM,
I never would
have guessed I was running it on such low-end hardware. Moblin is the
anti-Vista. It runs great on minimal equipment instead of requiring the
fastest possible
hardware and still running at a snail's pace.

Still. at this early stage, Moblin doesn't work and play well on many
platforms. For example, I, and many others, have found that it's default
Wi-Fi drivers
won't work with the Dell Mini 9 [12]'s Wi-Fi chipset. It also has some
holes in it. For example, although Flash is supposed to be already
installed, it's
not and there's no easy way to get Flash to work with it.

I can only recommend people who like living on technology's bleeding

Re: [AI] a question on IDEs

2009-05-26 Thread prateek aggarwal
For sure IDE is a great way to program, and the most important thing
is that there you get less collisions which saves both your time and
energy.
As per is IDEs are concern, since I do program on vc++ rather c++, I
do use visual studio, which you might knowing is the best IDE
available.
Though, there are some good compilers/editors available, as
bloodshed’s devc++ for c/c++, Borland, or so known turbo.
For java, unfortunately the net beans is not accessible, and you must
hunt for something else in order to program.
I’m using eclipse for all my java development stuffs.
This one, is pretty good and most significantly, accessible as well.
Since you’ve jumped into programmer’s glory, I presume that you’d be
able to find these above mentions IDEs, and compilers/editors via a
bit of googling.
however, please get back in case of anything further on the same list,
me, or a number of more intellectual software developers would be able
to help you out.

[AI] What You Must Do Before You Abandon Your PC

2009-05-26 Thread Saravanan Ramadoss

Subject: What You Must Do
Before You Abandon Your PC

If you've been using a computer for some time and need to abandon it - either
because you're leaving a job or moving to another machine - you need to be
concerned about security. Simply put, once you're gone, a lot of information
can be retrieved about you just by inspecting the digital traces you leave
behind.
So before you say goodbye to a PC, follow this list of to-do items to ensure
that no one gains information about you that they do not need to know.
The applications on your PC keep a record of almost everything you do. By
default, your Web browser probably leaves tracks from a lot of the sites you've
visited, stores the user names you use online, the files you've downloaded, and
even passwords, if you allow it.
Many business applications also keep track of the documents you've last worked
on or edited. Histories are useful to those who need quick recall of what
they last worked on, but they're anathema to those who require privacy.
There are ways to selectively clear usage history with each of the applications
that keep such records. But because it's difficult to remember exactly which
applications are keeping a record of how you've used a computer, a better
solution is to turn to a tool that specializes in removing traces of every
document you've worked on or website you've visited.
Clear History, for instance, removes the history of activity kept by most
popular applications. It can clear not only document and Internet history but
also can ferret down into more arcane data and registry information, removing
any record of your activity.
If the PC you've been using contains sensitive files, it's not enough simply to
delete them. Even if you delete a file and subsequently remove it from the
recycle bin, a savvy user can reconstruct deleted data and potentially gain
access to files that you thought were gone for good.
So to delete sensitive files, you have to turn to something more robust than
the delete key. Software-based file shredders fit the bill. Most of these
applications work by scrambling the contents of a file using special algorithms.
Your e-mail probably holds plenty of information you'd rather not see fall into
the hands of someone who comes along to use a computer after you. So it's
critical that you know how to destroy e-mail you do not want others to see.
First, though, that deleting e-mail from a machine that has been connected to a
corporate network probably does not actually remove all traces of messages
you've revived or sent. Many companies are required by law to keep copies of
the e-mail their employees generate, so your best course of action is to plan
ahead and never send sensitive information by e-mail from work.
You can delete e-mail messages individually using the Delete key on particular
messages. Remember, though, that deleting e-mail messages this way just sends
them to the Deleted E-mail folder, where they will need to be deleted again.
Holding down the Shift key while deleting messages sends them directly to the
recycle bin in Outlook and Outlook Express.
If you have the option to completely wipe out a hard drive before leaving a
machine or returning it, take advantage of it. A study by researchers at
Britain's Glamorgan University showed that more than half of the used hard
drives purchased from eBay contained retrievable personal and financial
information.
Reformatting an old hard drive isn't enough, since even a standard reformat can
leave the data on a disk vulnerable to retrieval by savvy users.
So you need to look into disk shredding tools before passing on a hard drive
that may contain sensitive information. As with file shredders, you'll find
plenty of commercial utilities that can accomplish this task, but capable free
ones exist as well.
Look to the popular Darik's Boot and Nuke (http://dban.sourceforge.net), for
instance. This programme runs from a boot disk or drive and proceeds to
securely erase any hard drive that it finds on a system.
