Microsoft 2007 Office Tutorials All of the standard tutorials are available in clean draft form (below). They are ready for your use. Because of the significant enhancements from Office 2003 to 2007 we created an Introduction to 2007 Office tutorial to give you an overview of the new features across all of the 2007 Office applications. The content for the PowerPoint, Access, Excel, Publisher and Outlook Mail tutorials remains consistent from previous versions - only updated to include the new features of 2007 Office. Early risers, night owls 'show different brain function' Washington (PTI): Are you an early riser or a night lark? Your brain shows it all particularly at 9 o'clock, a new study says. Researchers at University of Alberta have carried out the study and found that early risers and night owls show different brain function. For their study, the researchers looked at two groups of people -- those who wake up early and feel most productive in the morning and those who're identified as evening people, those who typically felt livelier at night. Study participants were initially grouped after completing a standardised questionnaire about their habits. Using magnetic resonance imaging-guided brain stimulation, the researchers tested muscle torque and the excitability of pathways through the spinal cord and brain of the subjects. They found that morning people's brains were most excitable at 9 AM. This slowly decreased through the day. It was the polar opposite for evening people, whose brains were most excitable at 9 PM. The study also found that evening people became physically stronger throughout the day, but the maximum amount of force morning people could produce remained the same. In addition, the excitability of reflex pathways that travel through the spinal cord increased over the day for both groups. It showed nervous-system functions are different and have implications for maximising human performance. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Smoking link brain damage: indian scientists say
Date:24/06/2009 URL: http://www.thehindu.com/thehindu/holnus/099200906241352.htm Back Smoking linked to brain damage, say Indian researchers New Delhi (IANS): There is a direct link between smoking and brain damage, according to new research conducted by Debapriya Ghosh and Dr. Anirban Basu from the Indian National Brain Research Centre (NBRC). Mr. Ghosh and Dr. Basu have discovered that a compound in tobacco provokes white blood cells in the central nervous system to attack healthy cells, leading to acute neurological damage. Their research focuses on a compound known as NNK, which is commonly found in tobacco. NNK is a procarinogen, a chemical substance which becomes carcinogenic when it is altered by the metabolic process of the body. Their study reveals that NNK provokes an exaggerated response from the brain's immune cells, known as microglia. Microglia cells act as 'destroyers' for the brain by attacking damaged or unhealthy cells. However, when provoked by NNK these cells start to attack healthy brain cells rather than unhealthy cells they are supposed to attack. Dr. Basu said: Our findings prove that tobacco compound NNK can activate microglia significantly which subsequently harms the nerve cells. The study also added that NNK is present in all forms of tobacco and, therefore, it can also enter the body through chewing. The research also suggests that second hand smoking may lead to the same neuroinflammation conditions. This research sheds light on the processes that lead to nerve cell damage in those who smoke cigarettes or consume tobacco products on a regular basis, said Mr. Ghosh. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] an emotional reminiscence
Performing in public and accepting donations in the form of small money is something very common amongst some musicions in the US. One of the famous musicians, who had scored for the Oscar winning documentary this year, had done a similar thing when he was studying in UC Berkley. Of course, this is not begging and accepting voluntary contribution is done even by some NGOs and political organisations for survival. So I very much understand the dignity aspect behind how this gentleman is earning his money. Subramani -Original Message- From: accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Sambit Das Sent: Wednesday, June 24, 2009 7:32 AM To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: [AI] an emotional reminiscence Hello list members, A very warm and auspicious mornig to all of you. I want to share a recent incident that made an impression on my thought process. Around 3 months back, i had been to a religious spot in orissa along with my mother in a bus. The route had limited bus service and like indian buses, it was carrying people far beyond its capacity. In the midst of the journey, suddenly among the wild crowd, i heard someone immitating a certain FM radio jockey. He was speaking in the same hip hop fashion and was singing songs himself. Initially i thought him to be a tramp. But later, i was quite impressed by his gregarious gestures and humble talks. Many of the travellers requested for different songs and he also sang them simultaneously behaving as if there is a song request on the radio. We enjoyed the phase for about 30 minutes. Then i realised that he was a visually challenged person. he was totally blind! I was a bit embarraced by earlier remarks. He then got off from the bus. The conductor later told us that the man used to get on to a bus both to and fro within a range of 20 kilometres and entertained people. He earned his living by collecting funds that people gave him in the bus. He never asked for money but people gave him some for his actions. The reason i wanted to share this incident is that, an illiterate man, despite of his disability, entertains people just to earn a living. he was unlike some of the beggars who ask you for money and bestow you with melodious slangs on your denial. A man inspite of his disability, uses his ability to struggle for survival To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] a whole new world of accessibility and touch screen, all about the latest iPhone 3gs!
hello and greetings to all fellow accessindians! it have been really long since i've been able to sit down, open note pad, and write and compile article in my own words on something very special, and post it to the mailing list. but honestly, i've missed describing and narrating the subject of the topic in my own way, and lately, there have been nothing so special in the world of accessibility that needs to be addressed specifically. but this time, just few days ago, a remarkable change has occurred, which marks the starting of a new venture of peoples with visual impairments into the world of touch screens. yes, i'm talking of iPhone 3gs. let its fast speed, grate features, accessibility aside, the biggest achievement is, for the first time, some big techno firm has took care of the needs of differently able persons and considered to include assistive programs and functions right into their mainstream product. long story in short version is, the new iphone 3gs, has a very powerful, customizable and easy to understand screen reader built right into the device by default, which means that you don't have to pay extra large amount to purchase another software, and then there is a whole new different story of incompatibility of the software version with your phone's operating system, non supportive applications, maintenance of its registration key, which has been totally eliminated in iPhone, because the screen reader, voiceOver comes by default installed in iPhone, which just needs to be activated in order to use it. each time you buy the newer iPhone 3gs, you get a built in, properly optimized, and ready to use out-of-box screen reader. talking of its features, why not hear it directly from its producers, apple computing? head over to. http://www.apple.com/accessibility/iphone/vision.html and learn more about voiceover for iPhone. there's also a very interesting and unbiased blog post by a general iPhone user talking about the accessibility of new iPhone which can be located at. http://www.evengrounds.com/blog/the-new -iphone-3g-s-provides-more-support-for-people-with-disabilities but then, won't it be better to hear about the actual utility of iPhone and if its promise of a fully accessible device is true from an expert blind user who have tried the device on his own? MarcoZehe, a blind developer and programmer in mozilla foundation went to an apple store to try the iPhone and its speech capabilities on his own, and here is what he have to say. http://www.marcozehe.de/2009/06/22/my-first-experience-using-an-accessible-touch-screen-device/ i'm sure even after so much of reading chunks of text, there's nothing that beets an actual podcast in mp3 format, which demonstrates an actual working iPhone, with screen reader active, and explanations of each and every important thing about it. download the podcast recorded in 3 parts from, part 1: http://www.shanejackson.net/iPhone_Podcast_1.mp3 part 2: http://www.shanejackson.net/iPhone_Podcast_2.mp3 and the final and last, part 3: http://www.shanejackson.net/iPhone_Podcast_3.mp3 and for the persons with low vision, who can see a youtube video, can have a glimpse of a working iPhone with screen reader activated at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=496IAx6_xys i'm sure this first step of apple of integrating accessibility into their mainstream products will surely benefit everybody equally, resulting a happy profit making company, happy customers, and equality among its users. it also denies the myth, that a visually challenged person can not use a touch screen. although its not as easy as operating the traditional keypad of your present mobilePhone, but never the less, it is possible to fully operate a touch screen based device. pheww now, that's called a review! *grins*. since now you all have enough of reading, downloading and listening ahead, i'd conclude my mail here. with warm regards, Ruchir. -- As long as forever, I will stay by your side, I'll be your companion, Your friend and your guide!!! www.ruchir89.wordpress.com To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Fw: To All Visually Impaired People Experiencing Difficulty Accessing TheiPhone 3G S Touch-Screen During A Phone Call
- Original Message - From: M. Taylor mk...@ucla.edu To: 'The Accessible Phones Discussion List' blindpho...@mosenexplosion.com Sent: Wednesday, June 24, 2009 1:48 PM Subject: To All Visually Impaired People Experiencing Difficulty Accessing TheiPhone 3G S Touch-Screen During A Phone Call As published on the Candle Shore BLOG: To All Visually Impaired People Experiencing Difficulty Accessing The iPhone 3G S Touch-Screen During A Phone Call QUESTION: I can find the keypad just fine again when the call ends but so far I haven't had success finding it during a call. Where would it be in relation to the end call button? I can almost always find that during a call. ANSWER: Hello My Fellow Visually Impaired iPhone Users, Do not become frustrated with your inability to access the in-call touch-screen keyboard. Why Not? Because it does not exist under a very specific circumstance. Allow me to explain: As you know, if you are not using a wired headset or a wireless Bluetooth device, the iPhone must be placed against your ear during a call. When the iPHone is placed against your ear, the touch-screen is automatically disabled. Therefore, unlike on a traditional cell phone, you cannot place a finger between your face and the phone in order to access device keys. So, during a call, in order to access the iPhone touch screen, you must hold the phone away from your face at an almost lateral angle. Of course, by doing this, in all but the most quiet of Environments, VoiceOver cannot be herd. Believe me when I say that I have spent hours testing different angles in hopes of finding some way to circumvent this seemingly obvious accessibility glitch. I was unsuccessful. I give Apple credit on their geometric calculations for no matter how slight, unless you lay your head down on the phone, the touch-screen is disabled at the slightest tilt. Of course, as you may have guessed, I contacted the Apple Accessibility development team. Their answer to my inquiry was (and I quote), When the phone is next to your ear, you're not intended to be touching the screen. You'll need to set it down to access the screen. As I said, that is a direct quote from Apple. Keep in mind that this is only an issue for those using the iPhone 3G S without either a wired or BlueTooth headset. OK, this is all I have for now but check back as I will be publishing a very candid review of the iPhone 3G S with regard to its accessibility features for the blind and low vision. [AI] free anti virus from the software giant!
hello access indians! greetings to you all! micro soft offers free anti virus, is it a good news? read this report from BBC news, experience later and report back to our very own list. Microsoft offers free anti-virus Screen shot of Microsoft Security Essentials download Microsoft Security Essentials is aimed at home users. A trial version of Microsoft's free anti-virus software has been launched in the US, China, Brazil, and Israel. Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) promises to provide people with basic protection against viruses, trojans, rootkits and spyware. The software giant has been criticised in the past for failing to include free security software with Windows. Its first security package, Windows Live OneCare, failed to attract many customers and will be discontinued. Microsoft is hoping that MSE, available as a free download from its site, will prove more popular. It has said it will automatically update it for users. However, rival security vendors have questioned whether Microsoft can compete with more established anti-virus players. Family doctor Early reviews of the beta are showing that it under-performs when compared to existing freeware products, and well below paid solutions, said security firm Symantec in a statement. Referring to Microsoft's basic anti-virus and anti-spyware product as an essential security solution is misleading. Consumers need firewall protection, web protection, anti-spam and identity safeguards, it said. J.R Smith, chief executive of security firm AVG, said Microsoft's entry into the security market could further confuse consumers about the inherent security of their computer. It's important to recognise that Microsoft's role in the internet security realm is much like your relationship with your trusted family doctor. They can help diagnose the problems. In addition, they treat many general ailments. In the end, though, they are not a replacement for a specialist when you need one, he said. Initially 75,000 trial versions of MSE, codenamed Morro, will be available in the US, Brazil, China and Israel. The software will be rolled out in other countries later this year. with warm regards, solomon. teachs...@gmail.com SkypeID: solomonkarur To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Problem with Jaws 10 and headings
Hello all, I have been facing a couple of problems navigating through headings on Web sites since switching to Jaws 10: 1. I am unable to directly move to Heading 2 or Heading 3 by pressing the numbers 2 or 3 on a site without first moving to Heading 1. Jaws says there are no headings under levels 2 or 3, but once I move to heading 1, the other headings on the page show up. I was however able to directly move to low-level headings in Jaws 9. 2. The headings do not wrap around automatically anymore as in Jaws 9. I have to move the cursor to the top manually in order to move to the first heading on the page. Are there any settings that can make Jaws 10 behave like Jaws 9 with respect to headings? Solutions would be appreciated.
