[AI] Just an innocuous click away

2009-08-01 Thread Renuka Warrier

Just an innocuous click away

Deepa Kurup

In these gloomy times, spammers enter email inboxes, steal private data

- Photo: Mohammed Yousuf

The Olympics spam alert is one of the many social engineering techniques used
to send spam.

BANGALORE: Even as the economic recession forced tens of thousands out of jobs
this year, attractive job offers, collateral-free loans and over-the-top
business opportunities persistently landed in our email inboxes.

Obviously these gloomy times held a silver lining for spammers who, in the
guise of solving our financial woes, entered email inboxes, stole private data
and installed malware on our hard disks with a renewed vigour.

Security technology firm McAfee, in its recent report, states that more than 12
million new IP addresses have been compromised, a 50 per cent increase since
2008. Symantec, another security solutions firm, finds that 85 per cent of all
emails in India are now spam.

The report registers an increase in social engineering techniques that send
out spam related to current events such as swine flu, Michael Jackson's death
or the Lok Sabha elections. Further, the Downadup/Conficker worm, which
exploits a vulnerability in the Microsoft Operating System, infected 35 million
IP addresses worldwide, the report says.

If you're the cautious kind of web surfer who avoids links and unknown file
extensions, here's some reason to worry. For, it's no longer just shady corners
of the web - malware is an innocuous click away. Drive-by download, an
invisible and advanced data stealing technique, has caught on this year, with
Symantec recording more than 18 million such attacks.

But how does this work invisibly? A web page comprises countless information
sources, and all the attacker has to do is to insert a hidden Iframe - an HTML
tag which makes it possible to embed one HTML page into another - into one or
many of its pages. Technically, trustworthy old domains can be compromised
by injecting Sql instructions into the websites' dynamic data base.

'Bad site'

So, merely clicking on this compromised site will result in your browser
discreetly pulling content from the 'bad site.' This 'bad site' checks out your
operating system and plug-in vulnerabilities before sending specially crafted
multimedia data. In a matter of seconds, this data is played on your multimedia
player, and simultaneously malware is installed on your drives. Traditionally,
Symantec notes, this code reverts to the attacker with personal information
like online banking passwords. What makes it truly dangerous is that the entire
attack is invisible and leaves no clues.

SMS phising

On the SMS front, Symantec warns that there is a deadly smart phone virus on
the prowl, this time with a signed Symbian (Nokia's operating system) malware.
With increased online banking in India, data theft is on the rise, according to
McAfee Avert Labs, Bangalore. Phishers are particularly using the recent
Verified by Visa and MasterCard Secure Code program initiative, offered by
banks, to direct customers to fraudulent sites and acquire their personal data.
Multiple Indian banks have been at the receiving end of these phishing
attacks, a spokesperson said.

On a typical phishing day, you will receive an automated message, asking you to
call back and provide information - to say benefit from an exciting
promotional
offer. After the eager beaver unwittingly doles out the information, the call
is cut, and before you know you're swindled.

In smart phones, search engine optimisation techniques are used to ensure their
malicious websites appear in top search results for popular keywords. Users
visit these rogue-sites and end up with malware that steals data, makes calls
and access SIM and files on their phones, a spokesperson explained.

[AI] Journal on free, open source software law launched

2009-08-01 Thread Renuka Warrier

Journal on free, open source software law launched

T. Ramachandran

KOCHI: An international peer reviewed biannual journal focusing exclusively on
free and open source software law has been launched recently. It is managed
by an editorial committee made up of members of the European Legal Network.

The network was founded by Free Software Foundation Europe to forge a community
of legal experts in free and open source software. Unlike commercial software,
users are usually given the right to use, study, modify and distribute free and
open source software, subject to certain conditions.

While the International Free and Open Source Software Law Review (IFOSSLR) is
supported financially by the Mozilla Foundation, which has been instrumental
in the development of the Firefox web browser, among other things, its
editorial committee says neither this organisation nor the others that support
it
exercise editorial control over it.

Digital rights issues

The journal will provide a centre of excellence for the very best in analysis
of issues facing users and advisors in the development, deployment and
governance
of free and open source software, recognising the importance of digital rights
issues to the daily professional and personal lives of many of the journal's
readers and the role that open solutions might play in their resolution, it
said.

In the commercial world, the old proprietary software business models daily
seemed less and less relevant to the modern market place, and free and open
source software broke through as a serious player.

Robust proposition

While free and open source software has gained ground as a robust business
proposition, its proponents as well as opponents still occasionally address
the subject as though they were engaging in a philosophical debate. There are
also differences of emphasis, and a whiff of sectarianism among the proponents
of the various standard licences, it said.

The journal will be of immense use in focusing on legal and policy issues
that may come in the way of furthering free software, which is bringing about
a shift in the way a digital society could be administered, said Nagarjuna G.,
chairperson, Free Software Foundation of India. Though each country may
have different legal provisions, the concerns related to securing individual
freedom in a digital society will not be different.

There are issues connected, for instance, with using public money to buy or
produce proprietary software in the official domain, the digital encoding of
Indian languages without standards, storage of public information in
non-standard formats, UID-related privacy issues and so on. Legal experts have
to
understand these issues, and a journal like this will be able to bring these to
the notice of advocates and judges, he reckons.

Among the articles in the maiden issue of the journal, which can be accessed
free at
http://www.ifosslr.org
, is one on the Fiduciary Licence Agreement, which has been put forward as a
model that allows developers to assign their copyright to a single person or
organisation as a means of ensuring the legal maintainability of Free Software
Projects.

This apart, the issue includes case law reports, book reviews and a section,
Tech Watch, that deals with topical issues with important legal implications.

[AI] College signs MoU with Yahoo!India

College signs MoU with Yahoo!India

Embarks on a three-year project

Long contract with Thiagarajar College of Engineering

For collaborative work in the field of 'cloud computing'

MADURAI: The Research and Development wing of Yahoo!India entered into a long
contract with the Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE) here on Friday
to do collaborative work in the field of 'cloud computing.'

A memorandum of understanding to this effect was signed by the RD Director of
Yahoo!India K. Chidambaram and the college correspondent Karumuttu T. Kannan
both of whom described it as a mutually beneficial association.

Speaking to media persons before signing the MoU, Mr. Chidambaram said that he
was impressed with the enthusiasm shown by the TCE faculty and students to
work in advanced and cutting-edge areas of internet services.

With this pact, TCE became the first academic institution in India with which
Yahoo!India had entered into a long-term contract for a period of three years,
he said.

According to him, the company normally goes only for short contracts but it
is different in case of the Madurai-based engineering college which has shown
the capacity to work in challengingfields of technology.

Cloud computing is an internet-based computing wherein resources are provided
over the internet as service to users. This is an emerging field of technology
which requires lot of brain power and TCE was a natural choice for us since we
found that it is among the few institutions involved in research, Mr.
Chidambaram
said.

He said that Yahoo!India had collaboration with four academic institutions in
the country among which the TCE got the opportunity of having the longest
duration in the first shot itself.

The progress of research will be monitored carefully and it will be analysed
every quarter. Delivery of results is an important criterion because the
research
agreement involved lot of money, he said. Mr. Kannan said that TCE was keen to
enter into a tie-up with the multinational company because we want to
graduate ourselves into a research institution along with excellence in
academic sphere. He described the collaboration as a feather in the cap and a
new milestone for the institution.

V. Abhaikumar, Principal, said that undergraduate, postgraduate and research
students would work along with the faculty in this project.

CataractClouding of the lens, causing decreased vision.

Chalazion Small, hard, cystic mass on the eyelid; formed from chronic
inflammation of a sebaceous gland (meibomian gland).

Conjunctivitis Inflammation of the conjunctiva.

Diabetic retinopathyRetinal effects of diabetes mellitus include
micro aneurysms, hemorrhages, dilation of retinal veins, and
neovascularization (new blood vessels forming near the optic disk).

Emmetropia Normal vision

GlaucomaIncreased intraocular pressure results in damage to retina
and optic nerve. Open angle glaucoma is the most common type of
glaucoma, consisting of a persistent elevation of intraocular
pressure. Narrow angle glaucoma is the acute onset of unilateral
ocular pain and visual loss due to sudden obstruction of the outflow
of aqueous humor.

Hyperopia
(Farsightedness)The focus of light rays passing into the eyes lies
behind the retina, due to a congenitally short anteroposterior
diameter of the eyeball.

Hordeolum (stye)A localized, purulent, inflammatory staphylococcal
infection of a sebaceous gland in the eyelid.

Keratitis Inflammation of the cornea.

Macular degenerationDeterioration of the macula of the retina.

changes in the retina occurring in diabetes mellitus,
particularly in poorly controlled diabetes; the principal
cause of legal blindness before age 65.

Retinal detachment Two layers of the retina separate from each

Strabismus Abnormal deviation of the eye. Inward deviation is
called esotropia, outward deviation exotropia. If one eye is
consistently affected, central suppression of its image
eventually occurs, with resulting amblyopia (dulling of
vision that cannot be corrected with a lens).

Uveitis Inflammation of any part of the uveal tract. Anterior
uveitis (iritis, cyclitis, iridocyclitis) causes unilateral ocular
