Re: [AI] need help on wethar application for pc
If you use Jaws 11, you can use the new feature called Research It. Press insert+f2 and press r for Research It. Press enter key and you will find six choices. Weather is the fifth one. Press enter on it an the rest is self-explanatory. You must be online during the execution. With best regards, Amiyo Biswas. Re: [AI] fastest internet browser
Google's Chrome is the fastest browser at the moment, but it is not so accessible with JAWS. I think there is some work going on in this regard. The latest versions of Chromium (the nightly builds of Google Chrome), can be accessed using NVDA. Regards, Ravi Paul On 8/29/10, Sinoj wrote: > Hello, > I also use Aircel with Nokia 3110c handset. Re: [AI] questions regarding publishing articals innewspaper/magazine
hello sir! Thanks alot for your valuable guidance. - Original Message - From: "Subramani L" To: Sent: Saturday, August 28, 2010 8:56 PM Subject: Re: [AI] questions regarding publishing articals innewspaper/magazine Hai: Pl find answers below the questions. 1. From where, and how to start Think of the most important aspect or point of the subject you want to write about. That is the beginning. Make sure then that you cover every important aspect of the subject which must be both informative and interesting. Newspapers, and ,even more, magazines have strict criteria on the language, the precision and the level of interest (topicality) of the article submitted for publication by an external writer. So be very precise, clear and straight (using present tense) in your articles so that it is clear to the reader. Think of yourself as a reader and see if you would like reading the piece. If that doesn't sound correct to you think of where it can be corrected. You need at least five to ten drafts of the article to get it right (that is for the experienced writers). It is not just about language (a common perception amongst peoploe). No doubt that language has to be good, but accuracy of information, its usefulness and the way it is presented are equaly important. Work on all these aspects before posting the piece off to a newspaper/magazine. Pl convince yourself that it's worth it. If not work on it until you feel so. once one has finished writing that article, how to approach the news papers/magazines? Find out the telephone numbers of your local newspapers and speak to the features editor or anyone handling the topic you are trying to write abut. If you are not clear, speak to the person concerned and see if he/she can read your article and would like to consider it. The problem is, this exercise may take time. Think things from their point of view... If they want to publish a new writer's article and that turns out to be flawed (not that you write badly, but they don't know you), the persons accepting your article is answerable to the editorial board. So there are factors involved in acceptance or rejection of your article. Do not lose heart. I heard the story of "Regret" Iyer who used to write for newspapers who got his nicname since hundreds of articles he wrote to the papers used to return to him with "regret" letters (many newspapers have the culture of returning a writer's article with a letter regretting their inability to publish their article and wishing them good luck). Once your article comes with the by-line, you would find the necessary courage to continue writing. Persistance is key. Is that such, that we can give an article in only 1 news paper or magazine, or we can give that same article in many of the news papers? How can you give the same article to different publications? If your extraordinary luck is such that both the newspapers like the piece and decide to run it on the same day? Probably your career as a writer will see the last day. So once you submit a piece to a newspaper or magazine (I am not talking much about magazines since it needs a different style of writing) wait until you hear from them. Once you are sure that your article is rejected, then you approach other publications. The "regret" letter would be a good enough indication. If not, pl call them and find out. Subramani On 8/28/10, Bijal Patel wrote: Hi friends, Hope all is going well at your end. [AI] Tools to back up your data
Tech - The Times of India http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/6445199.cms Tools to back up your data WASHINGTON: Let's face it: If you have to remember to back up your data, you won't. Any backup solution that does not eliminate the human factor is bound to fail. So put away your external hard drives and thumb drives that you bought so that you could back up your data regularly, and read on to learn about some solutions that will take the chore of backing up from you -- and, in the process, make sure that your data is regularly secured. Windows Home Server Windows Home Server (WHS) has been out for several years now, but few people have even heard of it. That's a shame because it provides the kind of hands-off, automated backup that most Windows users need. WHS is an operating system, not a device. It's based on Microsoft's rock-solid Windows 2003 Server operating system, which is still in production on millions of servers -- computers that run websites, transport email, and perform dozens of file streaming functions -- around the world. WHS, though, takes the geeky foundation of Server 2003 and adds functionality aimed squarely at home users - most significantly, automated backup of all household computers. The only requirements to use WHS are an in- home network - which many already have through their wireless broadband or DSL router - and a healthy fear of losing data. The easiest way to acquire WHS is by purchasing a product with the operating system pre-installed, such as HP's MediaSmart Server. These devices, which are essentially small computers designed to be run and operated without a keyboard or monitor attached, are relatively inexpensive, starting at about half the cost of a full-fledged desktop machine. Four hundred dollars, for example, gets you a MediaSmart Server with plenty of horsepower and a 1 terabyte drive to start out. Or, if you have an old computer around, you can opt to build your own Windows Home Server by buying a copy of the operating system itself for less than $100. Once set up, WHS asks you to install a small client application on every computer in your house. That little application allows WHS to communicate with your machines. From that point on, you're largely out of the picture. Each night - typically very late, when you're sleeping - WHS backs up every computer in your house, even replicating data, if you choose, so that it is still salvageable if a drive in the WHS or MediaSmart Server fails. WHS does more than backup. It also provides secure, web-based, remote control access to all of the machines in your home, and you can set it up to stream audio and video to connected computers and other media devices. But it is Windows Home Server's core function of automated backups that should put it high on the list of any Windows user currently relying on a human-centric backup procedure. Online backup Take the concept of Windows Home Server -- a hands-off backup device that communicates with your computer via a small client application that runs in the background -- and apply it to the internet. What do you have? Automated online backup. Backing up your data online addresses a significant concern of any household-based backup solution. If something were to happen to the physical box on which your backups reside - theft, for example, or loss due to fire or some other disaster - your data would be lost. With your data backed up over the internet, you've eliminated that concern. The trouble with online backup is that it's slow. Even if you have a speedy broadband internet connection, the rate at which an online backup service uploads your files for safekeeping, or downloads them for restoring files, may be capped. And other factors may hamper backup speed as well. For example, most services will throttle or stop backups if you're actively using your computer. Still, keeping a copy of your important files off-site - which is what happens when you use an online backup service - is a cornerstone of responsible data maintenance. But because of the speed issues and because some backup services will not provide you with unlimited storage space, you'll probably want to restrict the data that you back up in this manner to only your most critically important files. So which online backup services are worth investigating? Backblaze, Mozy, Carbonite, SugarSync, CrashPlan, iDrive, Dropbox, ZumoDrive are all well regarded. All of these services support Windows. Many also support Mac computers. CrashPlan is available for all platforms, including Linux. Most of these services offer a free version that limits the amount of data you back up to 2GB. Paid versions of many either eliminate the storage limitation entirely or provide some hefty amount of storage space - from 150 to 500GB - that should satisfy the backup needs of most. Backblaze, Mozy, Carbonite, and CrashPlan are the services that offer paid versions with unlimited storage. CrashPlan and Carbonite, in parti

[AI] Indian hardware market abuzz with tablet PCs
Date:29/08/2010 URL: http://www.thehindu.com/2010/08/29/stories/2010082955330800.htm National Indian hardware market abuzz with tablet PCs Karthik Subramanian CHENNAI: For a country full of software developers, India has seldom made a significant contribution when it comes to computer hardware entirely conceived and developed in the country. But that seems to be an old story. At least three different gadgets - all tablet PCs - have captured the imagination of geeks across the globe in the past few weeks. Two of the devices are staking claims to becoming the lowest-priced tablet PCs, while the other is a stunner that promises to take on the best in the game. The government-sponsored 'Rs. 1,500 laptop' (approximately $35) was announced by Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal last month as an "answer to MIT" (Nicholas Negroponte's famous "One Laptop per Child" was conceived at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology). By a very long haul, against $100 'xo' laptop of OLPC, the device ambitiously looks at becoming the cheapest computing device ever capable of running a complete operating system. There are questions as to whether the prototype would be viable for large-scale production, retaining the touted cost advantage. That the country does not have manufacturing hubs for computer components makes the questions pertinent. There have been suggestions that the government could cross-subsidise the cost of the device to its target student groups against commercial sale in other markets, may be for a higher price. What remains to be seen is will the device keep up its promise of becoming the most affordable computer that reaches the hands of millions of students. Mr. Negroponte, meanwhile, through his official blog for the OLPC project (blog.laptop.org), has welcomed the $ 35 laptop for educational purposes, and even offered resources for a possible collaboration. He has urged the Indian team of developers to focus on its design, making it a fun device for children to use, and in the process killing "rote learning." Close on the heels of the announcement of the government laptop, another company headquartered in Bangalore, Allgo Embedded Systems, unveiled Stamp, a prototype device that runs Linux and Andriod operating systems on i.MX233, a cost-effective and low-end processor. So while it is not really a competitor in the retail market, the device could find many takers in the B2B market. A video demo of the device, that sports a 7-inch touch screen, has been put on Allgo Embedded Systems official website www.allgosystems.com. Speaking about the tablet, tentatively pegged at $50, the company's CEO, K. Srinivasan, said the device would target niche B2B applications, such as smart energy control panels or even for specific educational devices. The company is holding talks with manufacturers and hopes to go in for mass production in four or five months. The most interesting development from the Indian hardware stable though is the impending launch of Adam, the tablet PC designed and developed by Hyderabad-based Notion Ink. Its young CEO and IIT graduate Rohan Shravan recently announced on the company's official blog that the device is headed for a global launch in November. He also hinted that four variants (LCD and Pixel Qi screens with Wi-Fi and 3G support) would be available in the price range of $399 to $498. [AI] Now, open source hardware
Date:29/08/2010 URL: http://www.thehindu.com/2010/08/29/stories/2010082955370800.htm National Now, open source hardware T. Ramachandran Draft version likely to be finalised at a September summit in New York KOCHI: The concept of open source is now generally well understood in relation to software, but can it be extended in a clear-cut manner to hardware too? Yes, say a group of open source hardware enthusiasts, who have been working on the draft version of a definition of open source hardware. They hope to finalise it at a summit, scheduled for September in New York. Open source in the context of software implies not only the free availability of source code, but also the freedom to modify and redistribute it. The concept has widened and is being applied in other domains too. Some open source hardware licences like the TAPR open hardware and non-commercial hardware licences were formulated and ideas from them are being incorporated into the draft. Effective definition Hardware enthusiasts and researchers apart, companies are embracing open source hardware these days. So the need for an effective definition of has become pressing. Peter Semmelhack, whose Bug Labs is one of the sponsors of the summit devoted to the open source hardware movement, says the time has come to crystallise the concept of open source hardware. There is a basic difference between open source software and open source hardware: the latter will never be totally free. "The whole goal of open source is to reduce/eliminate the transaction costs of innovation in software and now, hardware. The big difference, of course, is hardware will never be free [as in free beer]. That doesn't mean, however, we can't drastically improve the process by which new hardware devices get to market," Mr. Semmelhack says. Anybody with a computer can download and install open source software; it is hard to replicate and use open source hardware as easily. The process of developing electronic hardware requires an approach, workflow and tools quite different from those required for creating software. Richard Stallman, free software stalwart, wrote in Linux Today more than a decade ago, "Because copying hardware is so hard, the question of whether we're allowed to do it is not vitally important." Physical difference But, Mr. Semmelhack went on to tell TheHindu, "There's an obvious physical difference between creating software vs. hardware - bits vs. atoms. But philosophically the approaches are identical. In the world of software applications, open source promises that when you get the application executable, you also receive the source code to modify that application. Open source hardware similarly promises that when you buy a device [the "executed" version of the design], you also receive all the source material for that device so you can modify it. In the case of hardware, it's not a single text source file but a collection of documents that, in total, equal everything you need." Implications G. Nagarjuna, chairman, Free Software Foundation, India, says: "Free software movement and its method of granting freedom has implications for not merely software, but also other technologies, not even merely for computing devices. Therefore, when the hardware specs are known to the engineers, and they have the freedom to make changes, innovation will take several leaps." Some feel that India, which has a lot of catching up to do on the hardware front, should aggressively exploit the potential of this concept. "I would say that it is relevant for every country, including India. India will definitely get the advantage."
