Re: [AI] problem with footnoting

2010-11-04 Thread Amiyo Biswas

Hello,

If you work in print layout view, you will find the footnotes at the end of
the document. Press down arrow after pressing ctrl+end. The footnotes are
not visible in normal view. You can use the jaws key combination
insert+shift+f for a list of footnotes. If you press enter on one of the
listed items, jaws will take you to the point of the main document where you
inserted the footnote.

With best regards,

hi Sonu, not sure whether it will work out fine for you, but anyways
you can try this.
to give footnote, just use the shortcut alt control f
then type in your footnote, then using the up arrow key come back to
the main text. I have been doing that without issues.
hopes this works.

Dear Access Indians,

I hope you all will be glad to read the following news

630 differently-abled candidates to appear for CAT on Nov 9
Bangalore, Nov 2, DHNS:

As many as 630 disabled students will battle it out for the three per cent
seats at the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), when they write the
Common Admission Test (CAT) on November 9.

This year, the CAT Committee has adopted a series of measures to make the
test disabled-friendly. From additional personnel for escorting the
candidates, the CAT organisers appear to have geared up to conduct the
Computer-Based Test (CBT) for the differently-abled candidates. “We have
advised the administrators at test centres to conduct the test on the ground
floor for the differently-abled candidates. Besides, we will provide testing
aid for them,” said Himanshu Rai, Convener, CAT 2010.

The guidelines drawn up by the IIMs have defined categories like low
vision/blindness, hearing impairment, locomotor disability/ cerebral palsy
for differently-abled students. They will be allowed to use technical aids
like abacus, hearing support, wheelchair, magnifying screen and
scribe/reader. However, all these approved means of assistance will have to
be brought by the candidates.

Candidates suffering from low vision, blindness, cerebral palsy will be
allowed to bring a scribe. Differently-abled candidates will have to sit for
a longer version of CAT exam at their specific test centres. The total time
for the test under special accommodations will be increased from two and a
half hours to three and a half hours.
However, a differently-abled candidate requiring support at the test cannot
re-schedule the test. But a differently-abled candidate not requiring
support during the test can re-schedule his/her test online. Candidates who
have requested for support during the test should carry the authorisation
copy mailed to them by Prometric India.

[AI] Discremination between Blind and Low-Vision Candidates.

2010-11-04 Thread Amiyo Biswas
Hello,

There was an advertisement in the Anandabazar Patrika, a leading Bengali daily,
on November 2 asking for applications for about 1000 jobs in the South-Eastern
Railway. There are several posts like fitters, machinists, telecom technicians,
etc. which have been reserved for low-vision candidates. I know, there are
several totally blind fitters and machinists in Lilua and Kharagpur Railway
workshops. Still these posts have been earmarked for low-vision applicants
only. What is most significant is that there is no post for totally blind
candidates in this advertisement. According to the ad, it should be available at
www.rrbkolkata.org
You can check the web site for details. But the link is not working yet.

I am seriously worried if totally blind candidates are going to be considered
at all for jobs in future. I am not against the low-vision people. At least,
they are more wanted than we are; aren't they lucky? We want employment for
all, for blind people, low-vision people and for sighted people. We belong to
the same society.

Blind Persons' Association has appealed to the Railway Minister, Miss Mamata
Banerjee, today. I have asked them to appeal to the Chief Commissioner on
Disabilities. They have asked me to find out if any relevant documents such as
court order are available. So, if someone has any document, pleas mail a copy
to me or to bpain...@gmail.com

With best regards,

Re: [AI] Discrimination between Blind and Low-Vision Candidates.

2010-11-04 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Even MSJE has not identified these posts for blind.
So, they have a readymade excuse for denying these to blind.
Though identification of posts is not an exhaustive reckonor for recruitment
even at present, we can hardly expect to achieve employment to blind at present
even through judiciary.

In Maharashtra this has been going on for ages.
Here we have even all posts of lecturers identified only for low vision, no no,
partially sighted, except music.

So, it is in fitness of things that such a contagion extends to national level.

I have seen category of partially blind indicated even in disabilities
certificates in Maharashtra.

Sometimes, certificates, as in AP, mention that they are not valid for legal
purposes.

I know I am deviating from thread, but pardon me, I am confused, I don't know
where we are going!!

Hello Tanya,

I'm Mahesh Kumar, from Anantapur, Hyderabad. I saw this advertisement
and I'm in dilemma whether to join this training or not. I completed my
B.tech in Mechanical Engineering from JNT University in this very year. I
came to know that candidates are trained in soft skills, communication
skills and basic IT/corporate requirements. Is that true?

Honestly, I feel I'm good at all the above mentioned skills. I have
working knowledge in C and C++ also. So, I'm unable to decide whether this
program is suitable for me or not. It would be beneficial for me if there is
training in advanced computer languages like C++ , java etc..

Coming to my vision status, I'm 40% visually impaired. I have RP. As
of now, I don't use a screen reader, I use magnifiers to read the screen. In
this regard, I request you to go through the details once and suggest me
whether the training is beneficial for me or not. Vamshi sir told to contact
you for better help.

Hoping a quick reply from you. By the way, Happy Diwali to you and your
family.

Hoping a quick reply from you. By the way, Happy Diwali to you and your

Re: [AI] Use UPS to Gracefully Shut Down Your PC During Power Outages

2010-11-04 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi all,

One warning, Powershoot is inaccessible. However, there is an accessible
open source alternative at http://www.apcupsd.org

I do own an APC ups and it works like a charm. If you go down this route, do
ensure that your UPS is compatavle with apcupsd.

Newer APC ups(s) use a different protocol that is proprietory.

Finally, there are other UPS makers who have similar features.

Re: [AI] help needed regarding GPS

2010-11-04 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi Vinod,

You can download maps from the loadstone website, load them on to your phone
and then determine where you are. You can also mark points of interest so
build your own maps.

Loadstone does not provide turn-by-turn directions which is its greatest
limitation. You can use google maps to create routes but you do not get
alerts if you go off track.

 Hello Ajay,

A GPS system complete with maps can give the following information.

 1. What are the points of interest around the person? You could be
standing
on a street but how do you know what shops and other businesses are around
 you?

 2. It can give you turn-by-turn directions to a given destination. This is
invaluable for directing sighted drivers or even if you are walking. No
more
 asking passersby.

 3. You can know if you are moving towards your destination. This helps
especially in situations where you are not with a trusted driver.

 4. You can check speed, elevation etc. You may need this information to
gauge where you are and how fast you are going.

Re: [AI] 4 track cassettes

2010-11-04 Thread kanchan pamnani
Pranav, i do not know how many people who can convert, have 4 track players
therefore conversion does not seem like a practical idea. I have to dump
them because I just dont have the time to read them. I have read a few and I
know they are very informative.

I was looking at 2 options-
if someone had a 4 track player and wanted them I could send them.

or
if some organisation is still recording on casettes, maybe they could record
over the existing material.

If someone wants to convert into digital, I would be happy but I cannot be
responsible for the same.

Thanks Kanchan
Lets see.
