hi Neleema
I have also applied and preparing for UGC net, which will be held on 26 12, 2010
now come to the point, your friend has not received hall ticket, fine,
don't worry and ask him/her not to worry also.
if yur friend had completed all the formalities by first submitting
form online, then sending via post to the desired centre. if your
friend is in delhi, then wait for few more days, because here hall
ticket reaches to the applicant just two three days before the exam.
and if your friend is outside delhi, then go along with bank
acknowledgement slip and take the print out of received e-mail, and
show the concerned authorities on the given centre.
your friend will be allowed to sit on 26 of december, 2010

and friends, one thing for all UGC aspirants, JNU visually chalenged
forum has met with the UGC chairman, sukhdev thorat on the friday gone
by. and pressed our demands regarding writers in UGC exam. we
requested him and told if VI is fulfilling prescribed guidelines of
UGC, then he/she should be allowed to sit along with his/her desired
writer. I myself became the victim of my having bad writer when I
wrote for the first time UGC exam last time from jamia millia islamia.
then I started chatting, and increased my typing speed and now write
my exam particularly in JNU on my own. hahaha.
then thorat, assured us that he will be tawking to concerned
authorities on different centres soon.
and we also demanded that parallel phalloship for differently abled
should be started which should be at least equelent to rajiv gandhi
national phalloship which is given to SC and OBC's
hope our united struggle will bring about revolutionary betterment in
the lives of VI people across the country.

[AI] Audio markers that read out to visually impaired

2010-12-13 Thread Shiv
Mumbai, December 12, 2010
First Published: 01:24 IST(12/12/2010)
Last Updated: 01:25 IST(12/12/2010)
Audio markers that read out to visually impaired
It could change the way visually impaired move around their homes and in the
city.

The Industrial Design Centre at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay
(IIT-B) has designed audio markers, a system of standardised plates with an
audio code identification, which can be easily be fitted anywhere. On placing
an audio pen over these markers, the visually impaired can hear the preset
audio information.

"All environments must be barrier free. We need to evolve a standardised system
that will ensure all public places are accessible," said Professor Kirti
Trivedi, who has designed the audio markers. "These markers would bring a great
sense of independence to the visually impaired."

The markers can be fixed on CD cases and medicine bottles as well as on house
doors and office cubicles.

Having made the prototype in one month, Trivedi proposed his design as a system
for urban navigation in Vienna at Space X - an exchange forum on information
design for the visually impaired in October.

At present, though there are similar markers available abroad, in countries
like Japan, they are very expensive and their cost runs into hundreds of
dollars. Pegging his design as an affordable solution and hence easily
diffusible, Trivedi said these audio marker labels would cost around Rs10,
while the one-time investment on the audio pen will be around $15 (approx
Rs700).

Essentially, these labels are installed with an invisible code. When the MP3
audio pen equipped with an optical reader is placed on the code, the visually
impaired person can hear the audio message. For instance, at a bus stop the
label would have a bus number as the code and as the pen is placed on the label
the person would hear the bus route.

Likewise, the audio marker when placed near a monument will read out its
history. With the aim to make existing buildings user-friendly for the visually
impaired, the audio markers can be fixed as house numbers as well as at
railways stations, airports and in offices.

These labels could also be fixed on spines of Braille books. So rather than
moving his fingers through every book title in Braille, the visually impaired
person will just have to place the pen on the labels and listen to the book.

"In order to build a more accessible environment, both at home and externally,
such a concept is definitely needed," said Sam Taraporevala, director, Xavier's
Resource Centre for the Visually Challenged. "But what is essential is that it
should have a cost advantage over its readily available counterparts, both in
terms of the hand-held device and labels in order to make it viable."

Having designed these markers, Trivedi's next step is to conduct a pilot test
to check its effectiveness. "To design a comprehensive system, we need a
dedicated web-based support system and a portal where upgrades and downloads
for different cities can be obtained," said Trivedi.

Re: [AI] Audio markers that read out to visually impaired

2010-12-13 Thread Amiyo Biswas

Hello,

I saw a demonstration of the marker reader when Professor Trivedi came to
Blind Persons' Association in Kolkata. He was then experimenting the system
on books. The idea is to put invisible markers on each line of a book. An
audio recording of the book will be loaded in the marker reader. The reader
is like a pen, slightly thicker. When you the pen touches the marker, it
reads aloud the line from its recording. It is used in China for teaching
foreign languages, professor Trivedi told me. He was then thinking of using
it for making public places accesible. the idea will be very useful for this
purpose. We just have to carry an audio marker reader to read pre-designed
signs at important locations.

On
placing an audio pen over these markers, the visually impaired can hear the
preset audio information.

"All environments must be barrier free. We need to evolve a standardised
system that will ensure all public places are accessible," said Professor
Kirti Trivedi, who has designed the audio markers. "These markers would
bring a great sense of independence to the visually impaired."

The markers can be fixed on CD cases and medicine bottles as well as on
house doors and office cubicles.

Having made the prototype in one month, Trivedi proposed his design as a
system for urban navigation in Vienna at Space X - an exchange forum on
information design for the visually impaired in October.

When the MP3
audio pen equipped with an optical reader is placed on the code, the
visually impaired person can hear the audio message. For instance, at a bus
stop the label would have a bus number as the code and as the pen is placed
on the label the person would hear the bus route.

Likewise, the audio marker when placed near a monument will read out its
history. With the aim to make existing buildings user-friendly for the
visually impaired, the audio markers can be fixed as house numbers as well
as at railways stations, airports and in offices.

These labels could also be fixed on spines of Braille books. So rather than
moving his fingers through every book title in Braille, the visually
impaired person will just have to place the pen on the labels and listen to
the book.

"In order to build a more accessible environment, both at home and
externally, such a concept is definitely needed," said Sam Taraporevala,
director, Xavier's Resource Centre for the Visually Challenged. "But what is
essential is that it should have a cost advantage over its readily available
counterparts, both in terms of the hand-held device and labels in order to
make it viable."

Having designed these markers, Trivedi's next step is to conduct a pilot
test to check its effectiveness. "To design a comprehensive system, we need
a dedicated web-based support system and a portal where upgrades and
downloads for different cities can be obtained," said Trivedi.

2010-12-13 Thread Amit Bhatt
I too extend facilitations on this achievement and success on the part of
Sarthak. And congratulations and wishes to all the selected applicants for
their new jobs.
I appreciate Sarthak for taking the suggestion and feedback in a lively
manner with positive spirit.

I would also suggest to allow those candidates to send their CV via E-Mail
who could not meet the company people to face the Interview during the Fair.
I noticed some of the reputed companies like Wipro left the room at lunch
time only while the closing time was at 1630 hrs. So it would be great help,
if Sarthak can still talk to those company and enable the candidates to
forward the Resume for lining up the Interviews if it is needed.

Re: [AI] Audio markers that read out to visually impaired

2010-12-13 Thread Kiran Kaja
Apologies for being pessimistic but this idea seems to be a copycat of
Penfriend from RNIB and has been around for more than an year now. The
Penfriend costs £59 here in the UK but this includes the cost of shipping
and other things. I can't remember the name of the company but it is
actually manufactured in India.

This is a decent solution for labelling objects. But using it for urban
navigation is stretching the idea a bit too far. How am I supposed to find
the exact spot on a wall where this plate is located?

Regards,
Kiran

For these markers to be effectively used by the visually impaired, the pen
and the audio tags should be able to communicate remotely, at least from a
distance of 10 metres. Having these markers in bus stops and public
buildings would otherwise be akin to having braille labels. One has to be
able to find the labels in order to read them.

The other problem with such initiatives is that you need to tag whatever you
want found. This has not been very successful so far. How many audio traffic

Hello,

I saw a demonstration of the marker reader when Professor Trivedi came to Blind
Persons' Association in Kolkata. He was then experimenting the system on books.
The idea is to put invisible markers on each line of a book. An audio recording
of the book will be loaded in the marker reader. The reader is like a pen,
slightly thicker. When you the pen touches the marker, it reads aloud the line
from its recording. It is used in China for teaching foreign languages,
professor Trivedi told me. He was then thinking of using it for making public
places accesible. the idea will be very useful for this purpose. We just have
to carry an audio marker reader to read pre-designed signs at important
locations.

"To design a comprehensive system, we need a
dedicated web-based support system and a portal where upgrades and downloads
for different cities can be obtained," said Trivedi.

possible for me to touch the marker fixed at the counter? i am not opposing
the development, i just want clerification.

The other problem with such initiatives is that you need to tag whatever
you
want found. This has not been very successful so far. How many audio
traffic

signils do we have?

Re: [AI] Audio markers that read out to visually impaired

2010-12-13 Thread Amiyo Biswas
What I understood from the demonstration is that you have to collect the
required audio file beforehand. Suppose, you are going to Delhi. You then
download the audio tips from the net and load it on to the marker reader.
When you visit a public place in Delhi, you use the reader to read the
markers at strategic locations. If you miss the exact locations, I don't
know how it helps.

I think, such attempts might find out some better solution. It is very
useful for learning foreign words. Suppose, you are reading a dictionary. If
the dictionary is audio-labelled, you can hear the pronunciation of the word
using the marker reader.

With best regards,
Amiyo Biswas.

possible for me to touch the marker fixed at the counter? i am not opposing

On
placing an audio pen over these markers, the visually impaired can hear the
preset audio information.

When the MP3
audio pen equipped with an optical reader is placed on the code, the
visually impaired person can hear the audio message.

"But what is
essential is that it should have a cost advantage over its readily available
counterparts, both in

[AI] Rajasthan lends a helping hand for children with special needs

2010-12-13 Thread avinash shahi
Rajasthan lends a helping hand for children with special needs

Aarti Dhar

Resource room for differently-abled children set up under the RTE

Barrier Free Access under RTE refers not just to infrastructure but
also to learning process

Each resource centre has three specially trained resource persons, two helpers

JAIPUR: A group of women spending several hours outside a room in a
government school in Amer block in Rajasthan is a common sight these
days. This room is no ordinary classroom, but a resource room for
children with special needs who have so far gone unnoticed in the
traditional schooling system. However, with the Right of Children to
Free and Compulsory Education Act coming into effect, the needs of
differently-abled children are coming into focus.

The RTE Act, being implemented under the Centre's flagship Sarva
Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), provides for an inclusive education system that
caters to the needs of not only the under-privileged but children with
special needs also. Barrier Free Access is an important aspect of the
programme and refers to universal access for all children and adults
within the schools — access not just to buildings and physical
infrastructure, but also to curriculum and teaching-learning process.

As mandated under the SSA, all districts in the country should have
provision for differently-abled children who cannot be enrolled in the
mainstream schools. Having decided to implement the RTE aggressively,
Rajasthan has already set up one resource room each for these children
up to the age of 14 in all 249 blocks. Each resource centre has three
specially trained resource persons and two helpers.

The Education department conducts camps in every district where
children with disabilities are identified and their needs assessed.
They are broadly categorised as those with hearing impairment, visual
impairment, multiple disabilities and mental retardation. For two days
in a week parents bring their children to these schools for special
kind of teaching.

Amer block alone has 1,080 children with special needs and Jaipur
district has 17,000, who are attended to in 18 resource centres across
the district.

While the Human Resource Development Ministry funds the resource
rooms, and provides hearing aids, special shoes and other tools, the
State government has introduced corrective surgeries for polio
affected children, a large number of whom have already benefited from
the scheme. Last year, 730 children got corrective surgeries at the
Narain Sewa Sansthan in Udaipur and this year's target is 935.

“I don't know whether my child will improve or not, but he is very
happy here,” said a young mother who brings her hearing impaired child
to the resource room every week. The children are provided meals under
the Mid Day Meal scheme and the parents are given transportation
allowance.

The evaluation techniques are such that these children are given extra
time to learn. They are also provided with calculators, abacus,
Braille, slant board and pencil grips.

The syllabus is flexible, and the guidelines can be changed to suit
the needs of a child.

Good. But the thing is if they had published that article with her
name mentioned as the author or not. Since you wrote that the
narrative was published in third person, that's why I am keen to know
whether the name of the author was acknowledged; because there is a
great difference in editting a piece or plagiarizing something. If the
name was not mentioned then this is a case of plagiarism and can be
taken to court.
Thanks.

Re: [AI] only for the job fair

2010-12-13 Thread George Abraham
Dear Friends,

I do know that employment is a major concern for all of us visually impaired
people. Most corporate houses are not very open to hiring blind and visually
impaired people. NGOs and social activists are perhaps the only people who
are championing the cause of employment for us. It is a huge challenge and I
would appreciate the efforts of the NGOs who have taken on the challenge. We
must realise that NGOs are spending a lot of their time and resources
sensitising, lobbying and negotiating on our behalf for jobs in the private
sector. The battle is against a formidable mindset, the task is by no means
easy. Further, we must realise that NGOs contrary to popular perceptions,
work with very limited budgets. My experience tells me that we need to be
patient and see what we could do to alter the situation on our part. The
questions to ask ourselves are whether we are well prepared to take on
interviews, whether our language skills are good enough for the Corporate
World, whether our qualifications are right and whether we are good enough
to take on the competition? Remember that the Corporates have several
choices.

Hence, I do not think it is a great idea to resort to NGO bashing if we are
not finding employment. On the other hand I would focus on self development
and try and cooperate with the NGOs who are fighting for my cause. Yes, we
all have the right to be disappointed but let us not criticise and crib
about efforts put in by people who are part of our own team. Hope all of you
would take this mail in the right spirit.

Regards,

George

“You need to install this program to operate the device.

Without this program also it can be operated with Fine Reader, Open
Book or Kurzweil OCR programs. But this way of operation is very very
cumbersome and not really useful for mass scanning.”

So if I install this program then to what extend this will help to
configure this scanner with fine reader/kurzweil? Will my fine reader
recognize this scanner as fine reader source or I have to work on it
as twain scanner.

Suppose, in fine reader tools/options/scanner settings if I uncheck
the option not to show this dialog box again then when I open the fine
reader next time will this scanner work as default fine reader
scanner?

1. “Without any assistive device (screen reader) both in static and
video mode or use of this device by a sighted.”

What if I use the screen reader in conjuction with this scanner?

“These images are stored in c:\program files\i-ball\photos folder.”

If I have one folder called my scann in c:\documents and
settings\desktop\my documents, and my other combined scanners stores
these images in this folder, then can these images be stored by
default in these folder or
while installing this ClickScan program do I have any option to store
the images in the desired location?

“Sighted can check the image quality and the focus area as view is
shown on the screen.”

While inserting the page on the glass of this scanner, do I need to
have any sighted person for figuring out the angle of the page? Does
the glass extends till the edge of the scanner.

“Always default image resolution is 96 dpi which is too less for
document scanning.”

Is there any way with my screen reader to change this option every
time independently from 96 DPI to 300 DPI?

2. Without any assistive device both in static with fine reader

“Scanned images can be opened and read in Fine reader. But using fine
reader to scan and read is not so good option.”

If I scan the image in pdf format, does adobe reader reads this image
or do I need to still have any OCR to perform this funtion.

“This device uses windows “capture picture to video” dialog which has
four buttons and two image preview windows. With capture button you
can capture current image. In the right hand side preview you can see
all the images including old scanned images. (This is a problem).”

What if I move the old scanned images stored to another location
before performing the next scan job then will it still show the old
images taken?

My aforesaid queries may sound to be too basic but your valuable
opinion will help me in choosing the right assistive technology with
the maximum benefits.
I do appreciate for your instant test report which of course, is
self-explainatory but still I had few doubts may be out of curiocity
to know more about this new innovation. So I do kindly request you to
give your few valuable moments to clarify my doubts.

Looking forward for your kind reply.
