[AI] query about reservation
Hi members, wishing everybody marry Christmas and a happy 2011! I had a query about reservation. Is it mandatory for all examinations conducted by the Government to reserve 3% seats for the physically challenged? Actually, KVPY is an examination in Science organised by Dept. of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. It has reservation for SC and ST applicants, but such a provision is not available for the physically challenged students. Is it legally binding (obligatory) to implement such reservations, or is it only advisable? Hi Kartik KVPY Exam is for a scholarship/fellowship. Now they do reserve a certain percentage of such awards for sc/st, but not for PWD. [AI] The disabled break prejudice barrier to enter workforce
NEW BEGINNINGS The disabled break prejudice barrier to enter workforce..MALIA POLITZER It's difficult for the disabled to earn a living, but some determined people are helping to change that No one would ever accuse Laxmi Ade of lacking determination. A bright young woman of 23, dressed in a sunny yellow sari, she sits with about a dozen other girls in an airy outdoor classroom, listening intently to the teacher lecture. Every so often, Ade enthusiastically chimes in with a question or comment. Looking at her sitting, demure but confident, among her peers, it might surprise an outside observer to learn that Ade is of- ficially 90% disabled. She cannot use either of her legs, and walks by dragging herself along the ground with her hands. Despite the dual disadvantages of a physical disability and poverty--she comes from a family of daily wage-labourers in rural Andhra Pradesh--Ade man aged to complete college. For four years, Ade roused herself at 5am to take the two- and-one-half hour bus trip to college. From the bus stop, she'd walk the re- maining distance on her hands in order to get to her classes, sometimes in the rain. She graduated in 2009 with a bachelor's in science only to find herself at a stand- still--despite her new degree, no one would hire her because she was disabled. But that could soon change. Ade is attending a vocational training programme at the Centre for People with Disability Livelihoods (CPDL), piloted by the Wadhwani Foundation in partnership with the Andhra Pradesh government, aimed at preparing rural youth (age 18-28) with physical disabilities to take sustainable, private-sector jobs in cities. The programme first approaches companies in a variety of sectors--such as information technology (IT) and hospitality--to assess their needs, then develops curriculum in order to train qualified job candidates, and finally matches trained candidates with companies for interviews. It operates on the premise that people with disabilities shouldn't be hired based on a company's commitment to corporate social responsibility--but on the candidates' skills and capacity for meaningful contribution. The public-private partnership is just one piece of a much larger, more ambitious project. The Wadhwani Foundation has committed to train at least 100,000 people with disabilities, and facilitate their placement in sustainable, private- sector jobs throughout India by 2012. To achieve this end, the foundation has forged partnerships with the Andhra Pradesh government, Dr Reddy's Foundation, and the American Indian Foundation (AIF). Collectively, the partners are simultaneously launching different models of training programmes for the disabled throughout India. If successful, it will be one of the largest employment ini- tiatives benefiting people with disabilities in the country's history. Laxmi Ade intends to be one of the successful candidates. If placed, she will be the highest earner in her entire family, and the first to work in the formal sector. For Ade, such an opportunity means achieving a life-long dream. I want a job, she says simply. I want to stand on my own two feet. India is not a good place to be a person with disabilities. By optimistic estimates, only 35% of India's estimated 20-60 million disabled have jobs--most of which are low-paying, and in the informal economy. The employment of people with disabilities in the formal sector is nearly non- existent. Very few buildings in India are wheelchair accessible. Without the ability to access schools, the rate of education for people with disabilities is significantly less than their able-bodied peers. There are companies that come to us looking to hire people with disabilities but are unable to find suitable candidates, says Dr Javed Abidi, director of the Delhi-based National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP). Employment is not possible without education. Neither employment nor education are possible without accessibility. Even having the proper qualifications often isn't always sufficient in securing steady work. In a village in the district of Karimnagar in rural Andhra Pradesh, 28-year-old Raju Sardar sits with 16 others on a dusty blue tarp in the afternoon heat to listen to a pitch for the training programme by one of the CPDL recruiters. Sardar absently rubs his left leg, shrivelled from polio. Sardar graduated from college over four years ago with a bachelor's in science, and has been looking for work ever since. After countless interviews with employers who inevitably turned him down, preferring more mobile hires, he gave up. Now a husband and father to a three- year-old girl, the family relies on the `2,000 brought back by his daily-labourer wife. Sardar minds his family's shop. People look at me and they see my disability. They don't see my abilities. For Romesh Wadhwani, 63, founder and CEO of Symphony Technology Group

[AI] Strange Behavior Of Jaws With Regard To A Particular File
Hello friends, some time back I posted a mail regarding strange behavior of Jaws especially while copying one particular file, but unfortunately that query is still unreplied, as I got no response for the same from any friend. Hence pasting here my old mail once again and hoping this time you will kindly reply with an early solution:-- Hello dear friends, I just forwarded a mail from Retina India regarding Jean Therapy For Age Related Macular Degeneration. Hope you find it informative. Now I have a strange problem regarding this mail. As I try to copy its contents in to M S Word and press Insert + Down Arrow to read it, my P C curser starts reading the copied matter in a strange accent. But when I use JAWS curser to read it, then JAWS reads it in its original accent without any problem. I even tried to copy the contents of some other mails in to M S Word, and there I faced no such problem. I fail to understand as to why JAWS behaves strangely especially in case of this particular mail! I am using Windows X P Service Pack 3 and M S Office 2000 along with JAWS 10. Hope my learned and experienced friends will oblige with an early reply. Thanks in advance. Warm regards. Yogesh. e mail: yogesh.sharma...@gmail.com Mobile: 09988293833. Re: [AI] query about reservation
Yes, sure. See, the problem in KVPY is that firstly, they provide no exemptions from figures, and secondly, if there is no reservation, it makes matters even worse. After all, competing with the other students without any accomodations (exemptions/additional time) is difficult. -Kartik On 12/24/10, Kanchan Pamnani kanchanpamn...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Kartik Go for it. Hi Kartik Send them the Bombay High Court Guidelines and the CBSE rules and the order of CCPD in Asif's case when you write to them. Start now maybe they will listen and if they dont you know what to do. Write to me when you need . best of luck Kanchan - Original Message - From: Kartik Sawhney sawhney.kar...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Friday, December 24, 2010 9:10 PM Subject: Re: [AI] query about reservation Yes, sure. Now they do reserve a certain percentage of such awards for sc/st, but not for PWD. Provisions of law may be interpreted to imply that such a reservation should be made and there is no harm in approaching them or CCPD for that matter. I have been pushing for explicit inclusion of such provisions at least in the new statute, but committee members don't seem to be interested in giving statutory sanction to such mundane matters!! and deem them fit for bylaws/guidelines which we all know can be bent at the sweet will of burocrats -Original Message- From: accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Kartik Sawhney Sent: Friday, December 24, 2010 4:36 PM To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: [AI] query about reservation Hi members, wishing everybody marry Christmas and a happy 2011! Re: [AI] query about reservation
Kartik, When it comes to diagrams, a lot depends on the writer. I would look at the time and effort cost of preparation. If the exam involved significant preparation with a lot of effort, then I would consider other exams that could give me the same or greater returns. Many writers are able to describe the diagrams to you. The problem is in getting sufficient independent practice to interpret them correctly. So, study really really hard and more to the point, study independently and test yourself under exact exam conditions. Take the exams yourself when you are alone and that should allow you to benchmark yourself. If you find that you are scoring nicely then reservations and writers matter a little less. Re: [AI] question regarding download accelearator plus_DA P
Hi sandeep, in order to uninstall dap, you need sighted assistance only for one step. when you click on uninstall, tell that person to click on no thanks option. sea if you can do so by jaws kersir. if you click on it, you can now proceed with jaws, without any problem. when i was using dap, i found it very good. it use to give me a very good speed. e.g, if freedownload manager gives me speed upto 50 to 55 KB/s, then dap use to give me the speed upto 60 to 70 KB/s. with best regards, bhavesh. Re: [AI] Statistical Packages Accessibility
I believe there were scripts for SAS as well. The jaws scripts mailing list may be a good place to ask. I used SAS a couple of years ago very briefly and was able to get around without scripts for my very basic requirements. For anything serious, you'll definitely need scripts. -Manish -Original Message- From: accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Prashant Naik Sent: Friday, December 24, 2010 2:26 PM To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: [AI] Statistical Packages Accessibility Dear friends, I am putting one more query on accessibility. Re: [AI] What is Google up to?
Hi again, Kiran Kaja kirankaj...@gmail.com wrote: First, the two news items about Nokia's tactile feedback and indoor navigation project are only research ideas. I met with the team who were working on the indoor navigation project a couple of months ago. It is an excellent idea but we will never know if any of these efforts see the light of the day. And anyway, I fail to understand how these projects will help a disabled person use a mobile phone effectively without paying extra money to do so. Research ideas are the ones taken forward to create practical applications. While these ideas do not guarantee accessibility, they offer additional inducement to stick to a platform besides the obvious use of a screen reader. I believe that Nokia will eventually pay some attention to accessibility, but that it won't be enough to reach the level of usability VoiceOver provides on iOS devices. Speaking of iOS devices, have you noticed that VoiceOver has a Hindi voice as one of the options? The voice is called Hindi, but she actually speaks English in a sort of Indian accent. She also pronounces numbers in Hindi and reads out keyboard letters as their Hindi equivalent. This is quite interesting especially since iOS does not support Hindi. There will always be perceived security vulnerabilities when someone is trying to develop a screen reader for an environment which doesn't have a platform accessibility API as they have to resort to a number of unconventional techniques to get access the kernel. As I understand it, this is what is happening with the Speakup discussions you pointed me to. And again, Similar objections will be raised with any application which has to have global read-write access to certain system files. Yes, Gnome currently uses corba for accessibility. Consequently Orca needs orbitrc file to be installed which is frowned upon by developers. Finally, secured PDF. This is easy as I happen to find myself working for the company who are blamed for inventing the format in the first place smile. Hmmm, so you might be the one reading my future complaints regarding Flash and Air. :-) Last but not least, the idea is not to blame any individual or team at Google or any other organisation. Accessibility has to be an organisation-wide initiative. Agreed Merry Christmas To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe.
