Re: [AI] SHOULD WE ARRANGE SCRIBES FOR UPSC EXAMS?

2011-03-15 Thread Sandeep Gautam
Hi Jerin Jose,

after filling the preliminary exam form, as you have mentioned visually
impaired in the form:
UPSC will sent you the performa which has to be filled by you in a
prescribed time.
you have both choices, either
you bring your own scribe or,
you get scribe from UPSC.
just filled required information in the performa of UPSC and send it to UPSC
in stipulated time.
now wait for the performa for scribe of UPSC to come to you if you have
already filled the application form.
This was the process of 2010, if there is further any change, let us know.

Re: [AI] Anybody tried IE9 or crome 10?

2011-03-15 Thread Amar Jain
IE 9 final has been released, and download is available from the official
website as well as others like filehippo. For 32 bit its 18 mb and for 64
its 35.
God knows what is wrong with my broadband, its showing dangerous speeds like
3 kb or 4 kb whereas browsing speed is good otherwise I would have tried
till now.

However if you try, do share your opinion.

I think I will wait until the stable version is out and it's still
beta version. I am particularly interested to see the improvements in
it's vedio streaming process since there seems to be a claim of
improvement on that aspect. Also, the in-build download manager and
it's ability to stop downloading of a file and starting where it was
left-off seems to be a great feature. Let's see how they work
practically.

Not in a mood of trying crome though, but yes if its accessible, then
worth installing as it claims to be one of the fastest browser.
If anyone has already tried, come up with your feedback please.

interface takes smaller space on the screen.
And this is what makes me bit worried as to whether it will be the right time
to upgrade or not! Never the less, I’ll give it a try.
I even red that google has released next version of crome. So, is there any
accessibility improvements?
Not in a mood of trying crome though, but yes if its accessible, then worth
installing as it claims to be one of the fastest browser.
If anyone has already tried, come up with your feedback please.
Regards,
Amar Jain.

[AI] Anybody tried IE9 or crome 10?

2011-03-15 Thread Amar Jain
Dear All
IE9 has been released.
Heard that features like hardware acceleration, pinging sites to task bar, html
5 support which is not upto the expectations of experts, etc. have been
intigrated in it. My major concern is that of support for wap sites, as now a
days even mobile banking of SBI doesn’t work with wml browser and firefox.
Anyways, the address bar and search has been intigrated into one box, the
interface takes smaller space on the screen.

I first saw her when she wheeled herself into the coffee shop of the
hotel I was staying in Ahmedabad. She and her husband made an
interesting sight! People who had come down for dinner stopped in
their stride. Her husband on crutches with their baby boy in a sling
tied on his chest and she following on her wheelchair. It was
endearing, if not anything. And then when she starts talking and you
get to know her, you realise she is a bundle of energy with a zeal for
disability rights. Her vivaciousness is infectious. Meet Neeta Panchal
of Disability Advocacy Group, Gujarat as she shares her story with
Dorodi Sharma of D.N.I.S.

D.N.I.S.: You acquired your disability when you were barely 17 years
old. Can you tell us about the incident?

Neeta Panchal: It was during the huge earthquake that ravaged Gujarat
on Republic Day in 2001. I was 17 years old at that time and was on my
way to school along with 7 other girls. Suddenly, the earth shook.
Since we stayed very close to the Pakistan border, we thought that it
must be a war that had started. Unknowingly, we rushed into a building
to escape what we thought was a bombing, only to realise that the
whole building was crumbling down on us. My friends died. I was caught
between two of them but somehow I survived.

I was trapped in the rubble for more than four hours. When they were
pulling me out, I couldn’t feel my legs anymore.

D.N.I.S.: How did you overcome the trauma?

Neeta Panchal: It wasn’t easy. When the doctors kept telling me that I
had been badly injured and that I was paralysed waist down, I was
still hopeful. I thought I was in a hospital after all and I would get
well soon. Finally after spending more than a year there, I realised
that this was serious, that I would not be able to walk ever again in
my life. It shook me. I went into depression. At that time I was also
engaged to be married. When the boy’s family found out that I had
become disabled, they broke off the engagement. I tried to commit
suicide twice. Luckily, my family rallied on to get me out of that
mindset. My brother especially. He showed me Sudha Chandran’s film
called ‘Nache Mayuri’ which is her story about being a dancer despite
losing one leg. Slowly, I came out of my depression. I realised that
if God has saved my life, He probably had a reason.

D.N.I.S.: How did you decide to join the sector?

Neeta Panchal: That happened much later. The earthquake had taken a
toll on my family. I lost my sister and grandmother. We lost our house
and all our belongings. We had nothing. To top that, my family
suddenly had to look after me. I did not want to be a burden. So I
started a small shop of imitation jewellery and then moved on to open
a P.C.O. By this time, I was friends with my disability. In 2004, I
participated in the National Para Games in Bangalore and won a silver
medal in wheelchair race. In 2006, I won the gold medal in the same
event. It was only after I came to Ahmedabad that I entered the
disability sector.

D.N.I.S.: You have a very interesting love story – almost straight out
of a romance novel. Please do share how it all began.

Neeta Panchal: Well, Handicap International (H.I.) conducted
rehabilitation camps in Kutch after the earthquake – teaching us basic
daily activities, etc. I had several surgeries after the earthquake
(Neeta has had 22 surgeries till date and calls the operation theatre
her ‘home theatre’!). I needed to come to Ahmedabad for one such
surgery. I did not know anyone here and my family was also from a very
simple background and was not sure about managing things in a big
city. I sought H.I.’s help. Parag (Panchal) who works with H.I. was
asked to help me. That’s how we met and fell in love in the hospital.

But our families were dead against this match. Parag’s family because
I was more severely disabled than him (Parag is orthopaedically
impaired because of polio) and mine because they did not know anything
about Parag. We went ahead against our families’ wishes and got
married in the hospital on May 25, 2006.

D.N.I.S.: Did you families reconcile to this? Were there any problems?

Neeta Panchal: Our families reconciled to our marriage but there were
other problems. My in laws’ house w

[AI] A Piece Of Good News

2011-03-15 Thread Xavier's Resource Centre for the Visuall St. Xavier's College

Awaiting a New Revolution in the Practice of Physiotherapy
by the Visually Challenged

Pre Launch Concept Note, March 14, 2011: Physiotherapy has
been practiced by the visually challenged since early last century, and they
have been acknowledged widely for their contribution in this field.

The visually challenged physiotherapists have been
practicing physiotherapy using both manual techniques and electrotherapy
equipments. In the absence of any accessibility features in the electrotherapy
equipments, the visually challenged users always depended on ingenious
adaptations and workarounds to use these machines. They had to memorize the
different options on the electrotherapy units and had to be very precise whilst
using the same. The visually challenged physiotherapists had to rely on the
little beeps and clicks in order to set the various parameters of treatment.

With the advent of modern technology and increasing
complexity of the electrotherapy equipments, the visually challenged
physiotherapists were left behind and had to depend on using the older versions,
when the rest of the world was adopting newer technology.

In this age of right to accessibility it was imperative that
the modern electrotherapy equipments were made user friendly for the visually
challenged as they were for their sighted physiotherapists.

In the year 2010, the Xavier’s Resource Centre for the
Visually Challenged (XRCVC) made it possible for students with visual
impairment get admission in to mainstream Physiotherapy courses in Mumbai and
is currently working on the same being done at other mainstream universities
and colleges across the country. With the admission of Ms. Kritika Purohit at
Seth G.S. Medical College
and KEM Hospital in their Bachelor of
Physiotherapy course, new challenges in accessibility were thrown open which
the XRCVC took up. The XRCVC began this by creating accessible study material
and tactile diagrams that will help Kritika and other visually impaired
students learn and understand better. In addition given the need for use of
electrotherapy equipments in daily practice, the XRCVC took up this challenge
and in partnership with two leading manufacturers of electrotherapy equipments
in India is going to launch
for the first time in India,
a completely accessible range of electrotherapy products.

This sort of innovation has never been done before in the
field of physiotherapy equipments. The use of audio and visual inputs into main
stream electrotherapy equipment shall convert the seemingly inaccessible
machine into a perfect user friendly unit, which would transform the way in
which the visually challenged physiotherapists treat their patients.

Dr. Sam Taraporevala, Director - XRCVC cordially invites you
to the launch of the accessible Interferential therapy cum Muscle stimulator
cum TENS and Short Wave Diathermy on the 17th of March 2011 at 2:00 p.m at the
Seminar Room, St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai.

Re: [AI] nokia ovi maps

2011-03-15 Thread Shiv
Hi,

Nokia E63 does not have the internal GPS receiver. It might have the Ovi
maps loaded but I am not sure. In any case, you will need an external GPS
receiver or switch to a phone having internal GPS receiver such as the Nokia
C5.

Thanks.

Nokia launches E7
Special Correspondent

Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan speaks to media at the launch of Nokia
E7 mobile phones in New Delhi on Monday.
PTI Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan speaks to media at the launch of
Nokia E7 mobile phones in New Delhi on Monday.

Nokia on Monday launched all-in-one business smartphone — Nokia E7 —
priced at Rs.29,999. Called ‘the new age Communicator', the handset
comes with Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync support alongside a 4-inch
AMOLED touchscreen display and slide-out four-row QWERTY keyboard.

“The smartphone market in India is witnessing a phenomenal growth.
Trends such as 3G, social networking and video will further drive this
growth in the coming years. Consumers today seek a device that allows
them to do a lot more — both in their personal and professional lives.
Nokia E7 offers a superior ‘mobile office' experience coupled with
compelling entertainment options,” Nokia India Vice-President and
Managing Director D. Shivakumar told journalists here.

Nokia E7 comes pre-loaded with many applications including ‘Mail for
Exchange', Quick office Dynamic Premium, Adobe PDF reader and F-Secure
anti-theft software and is complemented by the full suite of
multimedia and Ovi experiences.

“Keeping Indian consumers in mind, we have introduced over 10,000
pieces of locally relevant content on the Ovi Store, optimised for the
Nokia E7,” said Mr. Shivakumar. Consumers can also purchase the Nokia
E7 under an easy payment scheme and pay for it in three equal monthly
instalments at zero per cent interest. Nokia has tied up with
Citibank, HDFC Bank, Standard Chartered and ICICI Bank for the easy
EMI scheme and the offer will be available to consumers with credit
cards only from any of these banks.
