Re: [AI] New iPhone a breakthrough for blind people

2011-10-26 Thread Shona Man
Can you tell me that this phone is having full keypad or not?
I think in tuch screen phone there will be difficulty in handling it
specially for locating the proper key butten. What may be the cost of
this phone, I am supposed to perchase Nokia E7 for 25.5 K, if it is
not much expensive then I will change my mind and I may go to this
phone.

On 10/26/11, Praful Vyas prafulnv...@gmail.com wrote:
 Dear Friends,

New iPhone a breakthrough for blind people

The iPhone has grabbed widespread attention for its sleek design,
revolutionary multitouch display and countless apps.

Not as well known is this: It's the only smartphone that blind people
can use out of the box.

That has local advocates downright giddy about the iPhone 4S, Apple's
latest creation hitting stores today with an advanced voice-command
 feature called Siri.

The blindness community is really hyped about what (the iPhone) does
now and what it can do in the future, said Wes Majerus, a technology
specialist and instructor at the nonprofit Colorado Center for the
Blind. There is a lot of hype about Siri.

Early reviews suggest Siri is a technological breakthrough, although
 it could use some tinkering.

Siri responds to spoken commands such as Set my timer for 30
minutes, but it struggles with questions like When is the next
flight to Denver from San Francisco?

Apple says the software is still in beta, or test, mode. The company's
video promoting the feature concludes with a blind woman responding to
a text message simply by speaking to her iPhone.

There's something to be said for being on the move and just pulling
out the phone and dictating a text to somebody and getting it sent
off, said Majerus, who is blind and owns an iPhone 4.

An estimated 240,000 Colorado residents are blind or visually
impaired, according to the American Council of the Blind.

Apple first made its popular smartphone accessible to blind people in
2009 with the iPhone 3GS. VoiceOver was a standard feature on the
device and subsequent updates. When the option is activated, the
iPhone speaks almost everything that otherwise would be read on screen
by the user, such as e-mails, phone numbers and letters on the virtual
 keyboard when they are tapped.

The iPhone is the only fully accessible handset that a blind person
can buy, said Chris Danielsen, a spokesman for the National
Federation of the Blind, a nonprofit advocacy organization. Android
has some accessibility capabilities, but they don't work as well as
 Apple.

Before the iPhone 3GS, blind people had to purchase expensive
third-party applications to make their cellphone accessible, Danielsen
 said.

In addition to working out of the box, the iPhone has access to apps
that support the VoiceOver option. There are also a number of
third-party apps designed for blind people, such as LookTel's Money
Reader app, which identifies currency with the iPhone's camera and
 speaks the denomination.

Danielsen, who is blind, plans to switch from a Nokia phone to the
iPhone 4S. Siri is just one reason.

Apple is rolling out a bunch of new features that are going to
enhance the ability of blind people to use the iPhone, he said,
referencing the release of iOS 5, Apple's latest mobile operating
 system.

The new features include clearer speech technology and the ability to
add a custom spoken label to buttons and commands. In addition to
powering the iPhone 4S, iOS 5 was released this week as a free update
for the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPads and recent generations of the iPod
 Touch.

Colorado Center for the Blind instructor Chip Johnson is excited about
the new features, although he has a more cautious view.

Sometimes the hype is more than the reality, he said, but it sounds
like there's going to be some definite improvement.

Majerus said Siri's artificial intelligence could help ease a concern
that still exists among the blind community about using a touchscreen
on a cellphone instead of raised keys.

As a teacher, I'm still going to tell people that (the iPhone) has a
touchscreen and you need to be able to use that touchscreen, Majerus
said. But if it gets to the point where for some reason that's not
working, hopefully they can get a lot out of the phone using Siri.

TalkBack Refreshed: Accessible On-Screen Keyboard And More ...
Android Access: TalkBack Refreshed
1 Android Access: TalkBack Refreshed
The latest enhancements to TalkBack now brings Android Accessibility
to devices without a physical keyboard. Many of these enhancements
also improve the overall TalkBack experience on all devices.

1.1 Highlights
•New TalkBack Keyboard.
•On-screen talking keyboard enables text entry via the touch screen.
•Text review provides spoken feedback when moving the cursor by
character, word, sentence, or paragraph.
•Virtual D-Pad for navigating the Android user interface.
•Global TalkBack commands enable one-click access to oft-used commands.
1.2 TalkBack Keyboard
The TalkBack Keyboard is an Accessible Input Method (Accessible IME)
that when activated enables you to enter and review text via the touch
screen. To use this feature, you need to first activate the TalkBack
keyboard via the Language and Keyboard option in the Settings menu.
Next, customize the TalkBack Keyboard to taste via the TalkBack
Keyboard Settings option --- here, you can customize additional
features including auditory feedback as you type. Finally, open your
favorite editing application, long-press on an edit field, and select
TalkBack keyboard as your default IME. Note that you need do this only
once; once the TalkBack keyboard has been made the default, it
persists across reboots.

1.3 Entering Text On The Touch Screen
TalkBack keyboard is an on-screen keyboard that supports touch
exploration along with synchronized spoken and auditory feedback. This
means you can now enter text when using devices that don't sport a
physical keyboard.

But wait, there's more here than meets the finger at first touch. Once
you have activated the TalkBack Keyboard, you can switch the keyboard
among three states by long-pressing the volume up/down buttons:

Hidden
The TalkBack keyboard is not displayed.
Navigating
You get access to an on-screen virtual D-Pad, along with Back, Home,
Search, and Menu buttons.
Typing
An on-screen qwerty keyboard.
My preferred means of using the keyboard is to turn on auditory
feedback from within TalkBack Keyboard Settings, as well as having
SoundBack active. In this mode, you hear keys as you explore the
keyboard along with an auditory icon; picking up your finger types the
last key you explored. Typing produces a distinctive key-click.

The on-screen keyboard occupies the bottom 1/3 of your screen. While
entering text, explore and find the top row, then move above it to
hear what you have typed so far.

1.4 Reviewing Text By Character, Word, Sentence Or Paragraph
You can now navigate and review text by character, word, sentence or
paragraph. Use a two-finger tap to move forward through these
navigation levels; a two-finger double tap moves in the reverse
direction. Once you have selected your preferred mode of navigation,
you can use Up/Down on the physical track-ball/D-Pad, or
alternatively, flick up or down on the virtual D-Pad to move forward
or backward through the text being reviewed.

Note that text review works when the TalkBack keyboard is in
either/navigating/ or typing mode; personally, I find it less
error-prone on keyboard-less devices to first switch to navigating
mode when reviewing text, since it is easy to inadvertently enter
spurious text otherwise.

1.5 Using The On-Screen Virtual D-Pad
Placing the TalkBack keyboard in navigating mode provides an on-screen
virtual D-Pad --- this is especially useful on devices that do not
have a physical D-Pad or track-ball on the front of the device. When
active, the virtual D-Pad occupies the bottom one-third of the screen,
and fast-flicks in that area has the same effect as moving with a
D-Pad or track-ball. Tapping anywhere within the virtual D-Pad is the
same as clicking with the track-ball.

The corners of the virtual D-Pad also provides Back, Home, Search and
Menu buttons --- these are especially useful on devices that lack
explicit physical or capacitive buttons for these common Android
actions. You can explore the virtual D-pad by moving your finger
around the D-Pad area; crossing the top-edge of this area provides
haptic and auditory feedback that can be used as an orientation aid in
finding the virtual buttons on the corners.

Hi Shona Man,
answer of your 1st querie
No, I Phone doesn't come any key pad, its a fully touch screen phone
but its inbuilt screen reader Voice over is awsam, but when you
starting using it you may have some difficultys to operate it, because
we always used qwerty key pad phones newly when you switch to touch
screen phone it will take little bit time to understand the interface
of I phone, but im sure you will enjoy it much as like qwerty key pad
phone.
I phone 4s which comes talking feature called seeri is not lonch yet in india
if you wait for 2 ,3 months it may be lonch, we can only hope that
Apple lonch it because, in december Apple will going to lonch it about
70 countrys we can hope these 70 countrys include india also but not
sure about it
if you can't wait you can go with I phone 4g which is awsam product,
it already lonched in india about 32 thousand, but if you
can't afort, you can wait or look any other nokia phone,
but pls pls don't buy nokia e7, because it touch interface was not good
and its very big, bulky, not useful so much.
you can go any other nokia handset.
Hope this will helpful for you.
Warm Regards
Wahid

Re: [AI] Fwd: Free Windows 7 Textbook Downloads

Hi,

I downloaded the book and found it easy to read. In fact, the book is
available in different formats like doc, html, mp3, etc. which makes
the reader to read the book in the choice of his format. But it would
had been better if they uploaded different formats as different files
so that we could have downloaded the format of our choice. It's a
file with some size most of which was contributed by the mp3 files.
If someone needs it only in html or doc, do write to me privately and
I shall provide the same.

And, thanks Geetha for the useful resource.

Subject: [AI] Jaws13 officially released

Hello Folks,
October 24, 2011
Freedom Scientific today announced the release of JAWS® for Windows
version 13, including Convenient OCR, a feature that performs Optical
Character Recognition on text that is displayed as an image, thereby
enabling blind computer users to read items that were previously
inaccessible. Examples of such screens include a PDF file, the setup
screen of an application, or the menu of selections on a DVD. JAWS now
provides an opportunity to read and interact with these screens,
including locating and clicking on text which may be required to
activate a control.

JAWS 13 also includes Results Viewer, a new HTML interface that
displays the results of features like Research It. The new interface
enables faster navigation with Navigation Quick Keys and switching to
other windows without losing the results of your lookup. Sports scores
have returned to Research It and are easier to navigate than ever
before. The INSERT+V keystroke now opens the new Quick Settings, which
replaces Adjust JAWS Options and matches the easy-to-use Settings
Center style interface introduced last year in JAWS 12.

“This release represents a huge step in accessibility for screen
reader users,” says Eric Damery, Vice President of Software Product
Management for Freedom Scientific. “Whether trying to identify and
read inaccessible PDF documents that are just scanned images or
interacting with graphical controls that could not previously be
located, the new Convenient OCR option built into JAWS 13 has been
described as a real game changer. JAWS 13 is also packed with other
features and enhancements that have been selected and designed to
improve access and ease of use for all users.”

The upgrade is an SMA release and can be downloaded as either a 32-bit
or 64-bit version from the JAWS downloads page.

With Regards,

Hello, for GTalk, Yahoo, Twitter, Aim, Etc; you can use fring. It is
very much accessible. Visit m.fring.com from your mobile browser.
There is a face book application is available from face book itself,
but I don't know its accessibility. For face book, try EBuddy from ovi
store.

Hope This answers your question.

Re: [AI] Jaws 13 officially released.

2011-10-26 Thread Amar Jain
No, most certainly not.
Reason: Captcha is such an image which is even hard to be recognized by human
eye as they are not like normal image content in terms of its placement, looks,
etc. Further, since they are randomly generated, it is practically difficult
for an OCR to recognize it.

Amar Jain.

kurzwiel is not converting image into text. It is basically an OCR with some
utilities which are not found in a mere OCR. So images taken by digital cameras
can't be read by kurzwiel. There are softwares that can convert images into
text.

Re: [AI] help for best scanner

2011-10-26 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi,

You cannot use a video camera for scanning. There is no OCR for interpreting
text in movies. However, if you have sighted assistance, you can use a
digital still camera to photograph the material and run the material through
an OCR.

Ravi,

Check with XRCVC about the zoom x. They have one and can give you better
advice.

I cannot comment on current scanner prices. Usually, you get what you pay
for. A less expensive option for you would be a Plustek scanner.

Hi Ashik, I also used Umax 4100 scanner for 5 years, but last year
what happened that the scanner driver cd got corrupted and after
formatting my system it went away, I didn't get anywhere. That scanner
is useless now just because of its driver, otherwise the scanner is
best for me.
I will be very thankful to you if you could send me the driver for
this UMax 4100 scanner.

[AI] Nokia unveils Windows smartphone Lumia

Nokia Corp. on Wednesday launched its long-awaited first Windows cell
phones, hoping to claw back market share it has lost in the tough,
top-end smartphone race to chief rivals, Apple Inc.’s iPhone, Samsung
and Google’s Android software.

But some analysts say it may be too little, too late, for the world’s
top mobile phone maker.

With price tags of 420 ($580) and 270, the Lumia 800 and 710 are based
on Microsoft Corp.’s Windows 7 software and come eight months after
Nokia and the computing giant said they were hitching up.

“Lumia is reasonably good ... but it’s not an iPhone killer or a
Samsung killer,” Neil Mawston from Strategy Analytics said. “But where
Nokia does stand out is on their price it looks like they are going to
be very competitive.”

Lumia 800, with Carl Zeiss optics and 16GB of internal memory, will be
available in selected European countries in November, including
France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and Britain. It will be
sold in Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan before the
year-end.

Lumia 710, with a 1.4 GHz processor, navigational applications and
Nokia Music, mobile music-streaming app will first be available in
Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan toward the end of the
year.

The company’s share price jumped almost 3 per cent to 4.96 ($6.90) in
otherwise depressed market in Helsinki.

Nokia also unveiled four cheaper smartphones aimed at emerging
markets, the Asha handsets priced 60 to 115 with cameras, navigation
applications and fast downloads, in a bid to help “the next billion”
users connect to the Internet, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said at the
Nokia presentation in London.

Equipped with QWERTY keyboards and some with the popular dual SIM
cards, the Asha handsets will be shipped globally in the fourth
quarter or early 2012.

Nokia, which claims 1.3 billion daily users, has steadily been losing
ground in smartphones, squeezed in the low end by Asian manufacturers
like ZTE and in the high end by the iPhone, Research in Motion’s
Blackberry, Korea’s Samsung Electronics and Taiwan—based HTC Corp.

The iPhone has set the standard for smartphones among many
design-conscious consumers. The Blackberry has been the favourite of
the corporate set and increasingly Google Inc.’s Android software has
emerged as the choice for phone makers that want to challenge the
iPhone.

Samsung and HTC snapping at Nokia’s heels for third place in top-end
smartphones behind the iPhone and Samsung are the biggest users of the
Android platform.

Nokia is still operating Symbian software, older than Apple’s software
and considered clumsy by many, although it has been upgraded. Nokia
also introduced the MeeGo platform in its flagship N9 model launched
last month.

Mr. Elop has said Windows software will become the cell phone maker’s
main platform but that Nokia won’t stop developing Symbian or MeeGo.

Re: [AI] New iPhone a breakthrough for blind people

2011-10-26 Thread Phen Varghese
It is not having a key pad.
It is a touch screen phone.
It wont be difficult for you.
When you tab each time you can know with the help of voice over what
you are doing.
The cost of this phone is from 30,000 to 35,000.
Even E7 is also having a touch pad.
But the advantage of I phone is that you don't have to buy a screen
reading software it is inbuilt.
But for E7 you have to buy talks for it.

Phen

I think in tuch screen phone there will be difficulty in handling it

this phone, I am supposed to perchase Nokia E7 for 25.5 K, if it is
not much expensive then I will change my mind and I may go to this
 phone.
