Re: [AI] Which will win? vostro or lenovo thinkpad?

2011-12-16 Thread Salman Raafay
Umesha sir, the laptop which I perchased last month is working fine
but I am not satisfied with 15.6 inch screen size as I need smaller
one, and another the keypad is not friendly, even there is no scroll
on, of, key. My brother is need of a laptop therefore I decided to
give this to him and to perchase another for my self.
As u told me that dell xp drivers are not available, I am afraid! but
the customer care told me that they are there!
However please suggest me with which should I go to find a durable,
rugged, small and light waight laptop, I am looking in between
thinkpad, dell vostro and H.P probook business models.

Hai Umesha sir, I need small one, as I have to travel a lot therefore
 I need as lighter machine.
I don't know weather thinkpad is much stronger and robust in
performance but some body told me that vostro is as simeler as
thinkpad. There is thinkpad searies in lenovo called Edge 420 which is
below 50,000 rupees. if I will go with lenovo then I will take this
searies only. I have to enquire H.P also. But I need only light in
 waight

 Hi salman,
what happened to your new laptop? mine is working fine. within one month

regarding xp drivers for dell, it seems you have not seen my last message
 in
the previous thread on audio device problem. you won't get drivers for
xp for dell laptops. for some of the thinkpads you can get xp drivers.
 but
you have to cross check for the particular model you choose. but lenovo
 also
recommends windows 7. so if any problem pops after you purchase as it
happened with audio in your present machine, you can clearly expect
 lenovo
people asking you to change your OS to win 7. windows 7 is future,
 windows
XP is present for some people like me. choice is yours. one more thing,
thinkpads are costlier than dell vostro. you cannot get them below 5
 Rs.

 Hi learned listers,
I perchased last month a lenovo Z570 searies laptop. However I am not
satisfied with the over all performance and 15.6 inchis screen sise of
the laptop. Now I intend to perchase another one, in this quest I am
struck between lenovo thinkpad and Dell vostro searies, both series
are business model searies which is most durable in terms of rough
use, light waight and small sise. I am unable to make decision that
 with which should I go?
If any of listers is having such experience or knowledge of relating
 to this matter, please share.
One another thing I want to ask that those who are using dell with xp,
I want to know weather drivers for xp are available on dell website?
And one very importent but final question that I have option to
perchase windows 7 professional version with 32 bit, how ever the
price difference between dos and win 7 machine is of 7 thousand,
friends should I go to win 7 now?

[AI] Accessible Coin in India

2011-12-16 Thread Mohammed Asif Iqbal
Dear all,

Trust all is well at your end.

It was my good fortune to interact with RBI governor, Sri D Subbarao last
Friday at leadership summit.

I did ask him a question why are coins which are so difficult to identify
by visually impaired or blind citizens of this country as they are all same
size? Why does system discriminate against us? Why are we not consulted on
design of the same prior to launching it in the economy?

His reply was that this question was raised to him earlier and they will
certainly do something about it.

I later on had an opportunity to spend 30 minutes with him over cup of tea
and actually demonstrated how difficult it was to identify Rs. 1 coin, Rs. 2
coin and I actually have to take sighted help to identify them. I leverage
on my US experience where coins such as penny, dime and quarter can easily
be identified based on their size variance. I did inform him about our two
beloved friends harish and Rajesh and he was not aware that visually
impaired folks even work for him.

He did take two visiting cards from me and I was under the impression that
nothing is going to happen this time. Same principal would apply out of
sight is out of mind.

Today I got a call from General manager RBI Calcutta inviting me for a
meeting next week to discuss this in details.

Let's keep our finger across and hope something arise out of this.

Thanks and will keep you posted.

Re: [AI] Accessible Coin in India

2011-12-16 Thread Mujtaba Merchant
Dear Asif,

This is awesome news! Wish you all the best in your quest in addressing this
issue with the coins. There is so much effort on identifying the coins as you
mentioned, you will find it untrue to believe but a lot of sighted people also
complain about the same. This I believe is the first step in addressing how a
visually challenged person handles his money

Your mail also has a surprise that the RBI Governer was not aware that his team
had employed members of the VI community. I will not term it ignorant but
sometimes people are just lost in a system. I would also like you to read this
on wikipedia and gather some material for your meeting, the link is below. A
brief on what to expect on the link is that it talks about the first ATM
machine introduced in the world for visually disabled people, in other words a
talking ATM. My point in sharing this is simply that if they can do it why cant
we?

Again wishing you all the best with your meeting with them. Please find the
link below:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talking_ATM

Dear All,

Greetings from CBM SARO(N)!
I completely agree with you guys about the access to coins.
Indian currencies in different denominations are quite accessible compared
to the US currency which is of same size regardless of the denomination.
I always need to be double careful and check with others before handing out

Thanks for your quick reply!
I checked with Saksham, But they do not have talking cash counter
machine, On checking with Saksham, bangalore office i realised that
RNIB is working on it. BTW Iam aware that there are some talking cash
counting machines available in UK/US/Canada but the challenge is will
it recognise indian currency? These machines are made for Dolor/Pound
curency.
In the current scenario, I am looking for a Talking Cash Counter
machine which can identify/count/sort indian rupee/coin,

Also many banks have cash counting machines but the output is in LED
display - Not accessible to visually impaired,
Again the challenge here is how can we make led talk/VI friendly.
There are some speech enabler solution to make talking LED, Again it
is in US is very very costly. (The product name is digicite)

So we need a feasible and practical solution to enable a visually
imapired to work as cashier in india. (FYI: There are many VI working
as cashiers abroad in US , If VI can work in US why not in india) We
despiratley need a solution.

I would love to hear from visually impaired counter parts who are
currently working on cash or as cashiers handling indian rupee/coins.

Thank you in advance for inputs/suggestions and love to hear from you
all more on this.

why to choose only dating for furthering relationship? Or if it has to
be a dating it should be later when relations get better matured. They
say first 'impression is the last impression' I would never wish bad
should be the last impression with dating between blind a sighted one
which inherently has limitations.

Mostly, as I see, relations beginning with dating even in 2 seeing persons
end up in break ups as one tries to give out hundred% on the occasion,
whereas we well know nobody can be hundred% all the time.

To me relations have better foundations on identical thoughts, thinking
processes, likes/dislikes, choices in life, entertainments, priorities
identical outlook to family relations, society what not. Conceptual
agreements fair intelligence in taking up the things may lead to better
understanding of your friend/life partner. So better go on those lines as
they make a base for lifelong relational adventures, dating could be just
one phase of courting before marriage. as it involves a lot of exposure
in the limits of our impairment, it should be put on backburner tried on
only when relations get mature.

[AI] What Are the Latest Treatments for Retinitis Pigmentosa?

2011-12-16 Thread Mujtaba Merchant
Hello Members,

Sharing this from an news letter I received this evening. I hope it is a
helpful informational tool to you.

Posted: 15 Dec 2011 01:28 AM PST
Source:
http://eyedocnews.com/006368-what-are-the-latest-treatments-for-retinitis-pigmentosa/?utm_source=feedburnerutm_medium=emailutm_campaign=Feed%3A+EyeDocNewsBlog+%28EyeDocNewsBlog%29

Earlier this week, Scientific American published a roundup of exciting new
technologies to help restore vision to individuals stricken with retinitis
pigmentosa.

The article first discussed technology available from Retina Implant, AG, which
recently got approval to extend the yearlong phase II human clinical trial of
its retinal implant to additional European locations. It also struck a deal
with Wills Eye Institute to undertake a clinical trial of its retinal implant
technology in the United States.

The Retina Implant AG technology consists of a tiny microelectronic chip
(0.1-millimeter thick), containing about 1,500 light-sensitive photodiodes,
amplifiers and electrodes surgically inserted beneath the fovea (which contains
the cone cells) in the retina's macula region. The implanted chip helps
generate at least partial vision by stimulating intact nerve cells in the
retina. The nervous impulses from these cells are then led via the optic nerve
to the visual cortex where they finally lead to impressions of sight.

Another technology discussed was the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System from
Second Sight Medical Products, which is already approved for sale in Europe,
and is currently undergoing FDA human clinical trials (expected to conclude in
July 2014). Second Sight's technology converts video images captured by a
miniature camera-housed in a special pair of glasses worn by the patient-into a
series of small electrical pulses transmitted wirelessly to an array of
electrodes implanted on the retina's surface. These pulses are intended to
stimulate the retina's remaining cells and create the perception of patterns of
light in the brain.

Click here for the full article discussing these and other new technologies for
treating retinitis pigmentosa.

Dear Asif,

This is awesome news! Wish you all the best in your quest in addressing
this issue with the coins. There is so much effort on identifying the
coins as you mentioned, you will find it untrue to believe but a lot of
sighted people also complain about the same. This I believe is the first
step in addressing how a visually challenged person handles his money

Your mail also has a surprise that the RBI Governer was not aware that his
team had employed members of the VI community. I will not term it ignorant
but sometimes people are just lost in a system. I would also like you to
read this on wikipedia and gather some material for your meeting, the link
is below. A brief on what to expect on the link is that it talks about the
first ATM machine introduced in the world for visually disabled people, in
other words a talking ATM. My point in sharing this is simply that if they
can do it why cant we?

Again wishing you all the best with your meeting with them. Please find

Subject: [AI] Tailoring by visually challenged

 Friends
We at BGFI Resource centre for the blind at Nagpur have a friend who was
 a tailor while sighted.
He has gone blind about five years ago and has left his job of tailoring.
I know the blind can effectively do the sewing and other tailoring jobs.
Now the challenge is to train him do them without sight and develop his
 confidence...
 He is totally blind.
Please advice where can it be done as a short term course?
I was just wondering whether anybody locally conversant with niceties of
tailoring could also teach him deal with the challenge successfully?

 With thanks and regards

[AI] Fw: [VV] New device puts vision impaired in the picture

Subject: [VV] New device puts vision impaired in the picture

April 28, 2011
Dr. Marriot and Mr Goncu testing out a prototype of the GraVVITAS

(PhysOrg.com) -- Visually impaired people may soon have greater access to
graphical information thanks to a new device developed by Monash
University's

Faculty of Information and Technology.

The device, called GraVVITAS, is a standard tablet PC with touch screen
technology that uses vibration and sounds to guide the visually impaired
user around

a diagram.

It is designed to enable the user to build a picture of the entire graphic
in their mind.

Currently, visually impaired students are using tactile diagrams to
understand graphics. These raised shapes and textures are produced on a
particular type
of paper by special purpose printers, known as embossers. This method can
prove to be extremely costly and can take months to produce a textbook.

The Faculty of Information and Technology's Professor Kim Marriott and PhD
student Cagatay Goncu are working with Vision Australia to develop the new
technology,

that will make accessing diagrams for visually impaired students easier.

The idea stemmed from a visually impaired student that I had years ago in
a unit that was very diagrammatic, Professor Marriott said.

This particular student had major problems understanding the diagrams
using the methods that were available to them at the time. We wanted to
try to increase
accessibility to diagrams and graphics in educational material, which is a
huge issue for the visually impaired.

The device, which is currently a prototype, has small external vibrating
motors that attach to the user's fingers. These motors buzz when an object
displayed

on the screen is touched.

Cagatay Goncu said voice prompts and sounds also help to guide the user to
read the diagram.

The basic idea is to guide the user to find the object by using sound.
Touching the object causes the sound to stop and a voice explains what
that object

is and any other information associated with it, Mr. Goncu said.

If it's something on the left side, you will hear something in your left
ear and vice-versa.

Developing the technology has involved extensive testing with
visually impaired
volunteers, which has allowed researchers to have a better understanding
of how they read diagrams.

The next stage of development will involve collaborating with haptic
feedback specialists from the Faculty of Engineering who will further
refine the touch

technology associated with the device.

Subject: Problem While Restarting The System

Hello friends, Some time back, when I used to try shutting down my system, the
computer would generally hang while the screen continued to show Windows
Shutting Down. At that point, I mostly had to press the switch off/on button
on the c p u cavenet. Only then would the system finally shut down and enable
me to switch it on again. At that time I was using Windows x p professional, s
p 3.
After several system restores, my system did start to shut down
properly, but the same problem would reoccur when I tried to restart the
system. Later on, I formatted my c drive and installed Windows x p s p 2. But
still, whenever I try to restart the computer, the computer is stuck at
windows shutting down. At that point I either have to press the reset button,
or the off/on switch in order to get out of this problem temporarily. Please
suggest some remedy, through which I can get rid of this nuisance. Hope you
will oblige with an early solution.
With care and regards.

AP This product image provided by Facebook shows the Facebook
application as shown on an iPad screen.

One of the enduring questions of the technology world: “When will iPad
users get their very own Facebook app?”

That questioned was answered Monday as Facebook said it was set to
release an updated version of its iPhone application, one that’s also
designed to fill out the iPad’s larger screen.

The lack of an iPad app for the world’s most popular social network
has confounded users ever since Apple launched its tablet computer a
year and a half ago. Third—party developers have made money selling
their own apps that show Facebook pages.

“We’re releasing it now because it’s done,” Bret Taylor, Facebook’s
chief technology officer, said in an interview Monday.

Two weeks ago, Facebook engineer Jeff Verkoeyen announced on his
personal blog that he was leaving to take a job with Google and that
the iPad app he had worked on was nearly complete in May. It was then
“repeatedly delayed through the summer,” he said, without saying why.

Rumours have swirled that Apple and Facebook were in talks about
deepening the integration of the social network into the system
software of the iPhone and iPad. But Apple’s updated system software,
announced this summer, will feature integration with Twitter, another
social networking service, rather than Facebook. That will make it
easier to “tweet” from other applications besides Twitter’s.

Like the previous Facebook app for the iPhone, the new “universal”
iPhone and iPad app is free.

The updated Facebook app deals with one shortcoming of the old iPhone
app, which didn’t play well with apps developed for Facebook’s
 website. They simply weren’t available.

In the new iPhone and iPad app, some applications developed for
 Facebook will work.

thinkpads are costlier than dell vostro. you cannot get them below 5

 Dear all,

It was my good fortune to interact with RBI governor, Sri D Subbarao last

I did ask him a question why are coins which are so difficult to

 same
size? Why does system discriminate against us? Why are we not consulted
 on
design of the same prior to launching it in the economy?

His reply was that this question was raised to him earlier and they will
 certainly do something about it.

I later on had an opportunity to spend 30 minutes with him over cup of
 tea
and actually demonstrated how difficult it was to identify Rs. 1 coin,
 Rs. 2
coin and I actually have to take sighted help to identify them. I
 leverage
on my US experience where coins such as penny, dime and quarter can
 easily
be identified based on their size variance. I did inform him about our
 two

impaired folks even work for him.

He did take two visiting cards from me and I was under the impression
 that
nothing is going to happen this time. Same principal would apply out of

Today I got a call from General manager RBI Calcutta inviting me for a
meeting next week to discuss this in details.

Let's keep our finger across and hope something arise out of this.

Thanks and will keep you posted.

[AI] a nightmarish experience using IRCTC

2011-12-16 Thread Bharat
I was considering booking a couple of tickets for myself using IRCTC
but when i clicked on find trains, I realised, there was next to
nothing i could do on that page. with a great difficulty after
choosing the options for the train i wanted, i thought of proceeding
with booking the tickets but couldn't find the options for the same!

am i missing something here. I thought the government of idia was to
launch a portal of its own for online reservations but poking around,
realised that, the government URL also directed me to irctc!

any suggestions? Aby ideas? tips tricks?
