 Hi friends,

Recently I have installed Jaws 13. I have the following problems.

 1. When I navigate in a composed mail by using arrow keys, Jaws is
saying "message body, followed by text", instead of only the actual
 text.

 2. When I press back arrow or front arrow in fields like user name,
it is saying the entire user name followed by the character instead of
 only the actual character.

 3. Jaws is reading everything twice in the edit fields of internet
 explorer.

These are very irritating. Please guide me in this regard.

Subject: Fw: Another episode of harassment with Airlines: Air India
To: nprd...@gmail.com

Dear Murli,
For your information and immediate circultaion please:

I have just come back from Delhi- Goa -flight Air India (AI 660 dt. 29 Feb
2012) and have experienced similar humiliating instance as with the Jet Airways
during my Raipur visit.

At Bombay (transit from Goa), I requested the Air India crew to get me an aisle
chair while de-boarding at the T3 New Delhi airport.

At Delhi airport, I waited for 20 minutes and finally after lot of hue and cry,
I got to see a luggage trolley for transferring from the aircraft seat.
Attached, herewith are the pics of how I was carried in a luggage trolley/chair
(only two wheels were there instead of four and there was no armrest), as there
was no aisle chair available at T3 New Delhi "the so called world class
airport". I was not able to balance myself on the narrow seat, my feet were
dangling and I was shouting for another aisle chair to be given to me while
carried to the aircraft gate. I not only lost my balance several times, as I
have limb girdle muscular dystrophy, but also felt extremely embarrassed and
insulted while 12-13 persons (both the crew and ground staff) looked at me with
pity! I was transferred again in another wheelchair at the aircraft gate.
After reaching the conveyer belt (luggage belt), I got my wheelchair where I
was transferred to my own wheelchair. Fourth time I was transferred in the
taxi. I think it's quite obvious that it was not only strenuous from me, but
also for my personal care attendant.

Pl see the photo of the luggage trolley (attached herewith) also which is used
by loaders/porters. The aisle chair which was given to me for transfer from the
aircraft is similar! Two wheels only and no arm rest.

In short it was very exhausting, disgraceful, scary and unsafe! Still, people
with disabilities are seen as luggage and they are discriminated. The trauma
and humiliation we face not only demoralize us, but also force us to take
serious action against the airlines.

I, Anjlee Agarwal, Access Consultant and Executive Director, Samarthyam want to
appeal to the entire disability sector to work together to reinforce -training
and amendment of DG CAR alongside the recommendations given below:

1. We will continue the fight, till the DG Civil Aviation comes up with solid
recommendations and take immediate action against all airlines who are
insulting disabled passengers and violating the policy rules.

2. We want training of all ground staff, pilot and crew for transferring and
handling persons with disabilities.

3. Take immediate action against the airlines: suspension of the staff that are
humiliating and insulting persons with disabilities.

4. Airlines to pay heavy penalty for their rude behavior.

5. People with disabilities WILL NOT SIGN INDEMNITY BOND.

6. Availability of aisle chairs right in the aircraft for wheelchair passengers.

7. Wheelchair users i.e. persons with disabilities SHOULD be allotted front &
aisle seat, if requested.

8. Extensive media coverage for sensitization of all airlines.

 Thanks for all your support.

hello umesha,
Portable magnifiers look like a digital camera in handling. we cant
take images from it. they are benefitial for low vision people only.
we can charge it and carry it anywhere with us. it has an auto focus
feature through which we can place it directly right on the page to be
magnified. it has zoom upto 15X. we can change the background colour
as per our requirement. it doesnt read the text. its performance is
nice. i got it from AICB for Rs.20500.
for more details, you can contact me anytime off the list.

 hello list members,
 1. you can try automatic scanning as it gives around 90% accuracy and
speedy as well. you can get it done from any organisation nearby your
 place having this machine.
 2. portable magnifiers like versa proves very benefitial for low
vision people when there is immediate requirement of checking /
 reading document.
 3. there is another device by the name zoom x where the book is placed
below a camera connected with the desktop / laptop and within few
seconds after a click, it starts reading the page.
hope that above mentioned things may prove benefitial for you.

Re: [AI] how a VI can be independent ?

2012-03-01 Thread Milan Mittal
hello rajesh sir,
automatic scanner is very expensive. as per my knowledge, a HP
automatic scanner cost around 3 lakhs.
i rush to scanning/printing shops or NGO's for the automatic scanning.
here, in delhi, it costs around 50 to 80 paisa per page scanning
depending on number of pages. i get it done mostly when the book
contains too many tables. it normally gives me approx 90% accuracy. it
takes very less time to scan. normally, i get around 1000 to 1500
pages scanned within 2 days.
for theory subjects, i prefer manual scanning. i use HP lazer jet
which is multi functional i.e., scanning, printing and photocopy. it
gives me good performance. the best part of this machine is that we
can do both manual and automatic scanning through it. its only
negative point is that it doesnt rotate pages on its own during
automatic scanning. first i get all the odd pages scanned and then the
even pages. then i use pdf converter softwares to arrange them in
proper series. it costed me around Rs.25,000.
as per my knowledge, performance of scanned item also depends on
quality of scanner as well. list members like ajay first tried
scanning on their home machine. but when they tried professional
scanner, they felt the difference.
its just my experience that i am sharing. hope it proves benefitial for all.

Re: [AI] how a VI can be independent ?

2012-03-01 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Dear Milan
Thank you for the update.
You say you use HP lazer jet and it can do manual and automatic scanning.
It cost you Rs. 25000
Then, which are 3 lakh rupee automatic scanners you are refering to?
If we can get a scanner for automatic scanning for Rs. 25 thousand, I think I
would go for it...

Re: [AI] Blind person denied job in railways because of diabetesIndeed the said
posts come under the said list. Initially there were doubts cast whether
disqualification is due to diabetes alone or otherwise. But after due
verification through various channels, its indeed diabetes only.

Whether the post of Group D in question was identified/reserved for blind?
If no, I am afraid the disqualification may have other reasons than alleged
diabetes.

  Hi,

I thought you could have gained some attention by putting more
appropriate subject line which explicitly states the story. hence I
  have changed the subject line.

First, this disqualification is not on the ground of disability, but
on the ground of a disease (diabetes). So, I doubt whether PWD Act
  applies to this case.
We should find out whether government can disqualify on the ground of
  such diseases .

Second, I heard of some case where a person with HIV positive has been
disqualified and the court gave the ruling against such denial. So,
if HIV positive can't be denied a job, sure a person with diabetes
shouldn't be. however I'm not sure of any concrete legal remedy.

You may hear more from legal experts.

There is a scanner called HP scan jet 5590 which is for 27,000 rupees.
Its a flatbed as well automatic document feeder. It can scan 8 pages
per minute in ADF mode. You can perchase it.

said posts come under the said list. Initially there were doubts cast
whether disqualification is due to diabetes alone or otherwise. But after
due verification through various channels, its indeed diabetes only.

Whether the post of Group D in question was identified/reserved for
blind?
If no, I am afraid the disqualification may have other reasons than
alleged diabetes.

Dear friends,

I am also searching for a talking land phone. I bought the one
supplied by Sakshum. The price of which was around Rs. 800. The phone
will announce the numbers which we dial and the number of the incoming
call. The maindrawback of the phone is that the menu options and
contacts are really inaccessible to the visually challenged persons.
It will not speak the name and other options.

While googling for an accessible telephone I found one which seems
really wonderful. I got really impressed by the features available in
it. It provides voice support to all menu options and contact names.
Following are the important features of the phone.

Item Code: BDP400 Geemarc BDP400 Talking Amplified Phone with Large Display
Geemarc's BDP400 Talking Amplified Phone with Large Display was
developed according to the requirements and guidelines set forth by
the Royal Institute for the Blind (RNIB) in England. It was tested at
every stage of the development by focus groups of blind users whose
feedback helped in the development process.

The BDP400 announces the numbers and menu options when you press them.
It also offers full vocalization of names, numbers, menu, commands,
date and time. Volume control is adjustable up to 40dB with an
extra-loud hands-free speakerphone, features to aid individuals with
visual impairments or hearing loss. All keys and key functions are
spoken, as well as any contact names stored in the phone memory.
Product Features•Up to 40dB amplification
•Tone and volume control
•Adjustable receiving tone control +/-10dB
•Boost button activates built-in amplifier
•Adjustable extra large LCD display is 7cm x 11.7cm; characters are 2.3cm
high
•LCD display can show light characters on dark background or dark
characters on light background
•Ergonomic design for easy use by blind users
•Contrasting colors and fonts for visually impaired users
•Spoken menu, names, numbers and commands
•Hear each command spoken with a touch of the buttons
•Talking Caller ID
•Record names in the memory and hear them spoken as a call comes in
•Easy-to-use navigational menu
•Three one-touch memory buttons
•Phone book with 85 numbers
•Big button keypad
•Extra loud hands-free speakerphone with adjustable volume setting
•90dB SPL at 1m extra loud ringer with bright visual ring indicator
•Mute function
•2.5mm headset jack
•Four AA batteries required to store phone numbers in case of power
outage (not included)
•Large print user manual
•Hearing aid compatible

I think it is quite suitable to meet almost all of our requirements.
You can see the full details and video demonstration of it from the
following link.

http://www.assistech.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?preadd=action&key=BDP400

I have no personal experience with this phone. All the details
mentioned above are copied from their web site. I don’t know whether
some one in our country is using it or not. If somebody is using it or
having any more information please be kind enough to share it over the
list. If If it can work well with our system, it will be very much
useful to the visually challenged people, especially those who are
working with phone

[AI] FW: WHY THE STATUS QUO WILL NEVER CHANGE: PART 2

2012-03-01 Thread Suhas Karnik

Subject: WHY THE STATUS QUO WILL NEVER CHANGE: PART 2
From: dnis.in...@gmail.com
To: edi...@dnis.org

Dear Friends,

It has been exactly one week since a person with Cerebral Palsy was forced to
deplane from a Spicejet flight from Kolkata to Goa. Since the incident, much
has been written and said about it, both in the disability sector and in the
media.

SO FAR:

1: Spicejet 'apologising' for the 'inconvenience', announced that they will
start an internal inquiry into the incident.

2: Office of the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (CCPD) issued
a show cause notice to Spicejet.

3: Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE) wrote to Secretary,
Ministry of Civil Aviation seeking an inquiry into the incident and for action
to be taken against those guilty.

4: After facing flak, Minister, MSJE finally met his Civil Aviation counterpart
to discuss the issue.

5: Ministry of Civil Aviation has been silent on this issue.

6: The second time Chairperson of National Trust for Welfare of Persons with
Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation & Multiple Disabilities has not
utterted a single word so far!

TANGIBLE RESULTS TILL NOW: NOTHING

LATEST NEWS: SPICEJET HAS FINISHED ITS 'FORMAL INQUIRY'.

Here is the bombshell.

Spicejet has said, "We regret the inconvenience caused to the passenger as the
entire incident was inadvertent. Further to the inquiry, we have sensitised all
our employees on the needs of these passengers (suffering from Cerebral Palsy)
for better care."

"In order to improve general understanding of Cerebral Palsy, Spicejet will
make a donation of Rs. 1 lakh to a charity which supports in improving the
understanding of the disease," the spokesperson added.

The full media report is appended below.

Please note that for Spicejet, this incident was only an 'inconvenience'. That
too, caused 'inadvertently'. To a young lady "suffering" from a "disease"
called Cerebral Palsy. They already have 'sensitised' ALL their employees and
incase any further awareness is required to be created in the country on this
"disease", they have magnanimously decided to contribute a whopping sum of
Rupees 1 lakh to a "charity".

This extraordinary development provides an excellent opportunity for the Civil
Aviation Minister, the Social Justice Minister, the Civil Aviation Secretary,
the Social Justice Secretary, the Chief Commissioner for Persons with
Disabilities, the National Trust Chairperson, Padma Shri Dr. Mithu Alur and
Padma Shri Dr. Sudha Kaul to form yet another Committee in order to decide as
to what should be now done with this more than generous offer made by
Spicejet!!!

The Spicejet today said the incident of a differently-abled woman being
offloaded from its Kolkata-Mumbai flight last Sunday was "inadvertent" and due
to lack of information about and understanding of Cerebral Palsy.
The airline said "the formal inquiry in this regard has been completed. We
regret the inconvenience caused to the passenger as the entire incident was
inadvertent."
"Further to the inquiry, we have sensitised all our employees on the needs of
these passengers (suffering from Cerebral Palsy) for better care," a Spicejet
spokesperson said in a statement.
"In order to improve, general understanding of Cerebral palsy, Spicejet will
make a donation of Rs1 lakh to a charity which supports in improving the
understanding of the disease," the spokesperson said.
J Ghosh (40) was not allowed by the crew members of Spicejet's Kolkata-Mumbai
flight to fly alleging she was a mental patient and that it was not safe for
the airline to allow her inside the aircraft on Sunday last at the NSC Bose
International Airport in Kolkata.
After being denied the permission to fly, Ghosh had lodged a complaint with
SpiceJet authorities.

Subject: [AI] problems in Jaws 13 in internet explorer

Hi friends,

Recently I have installed Jaws 13. I have the following problems.

1. When I navigate in a composed mail by using arrow keys, Jaws is
saying "message body, followed by text", instead of only the actual
text.

2. When I press back arrow or front arrow in fields like user name,
it is saying the entire user name followed by the character instead
of

only the actual character.

3. Jaws is reading everything twice in the edit fields of internet
explorer.

These are very irritating. Please guide me in this regard.
