[AI] New device can help visually impaired 'see' using music
New device can help visually impaired 'see' using music Published: Friday, Jul 6, 2012, 15:50 IST Place: Washington, DC | New device can help visually impaired 'see' using music Published: Friday, Jul 6, 2012, 15:50 IST Place: Washington, DC | Agency: ANI Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have developed a new device that converts images into music to help individuals without vision reach for objects in space. Sensory substitution devices (SSDs) use sound or touch to help the visually impaired perceive the visual scene surrounding them. The ideal SSD would assist not only in sensing the environment but also in performing daily activities based on this input. For example, accurately reaching for a coffee cup, or shaking a friend's hand. In a new study, Hebrew scientists trained blindfolded sighted participants to perform fast and accurate movements using their new SSD, called EyeMusic. The EyeMusic employs pleasant musical tones and scales to help the visually impaired "see" using music. This non-invasive SSD converts images into a combination of musical notes, or "soundscapes. The device was developed by the senior author Prof. Amir Amedi and his team at the Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences (ELSC) and the Institute for Medical Research Israel-Canada at the Hebrew University. The EyeMusic scans an image and represents pixels at high vertical locations as high-pitched musical notes and low vertical locations as low-pitched notes according to a musical scale that will sound pleasant in many possible combinations. The image is scanned continuously, from left to right, and an auditory cue is used to mark the start of the scan. The horizontal location of a pixel is indicated by the timing of the musical notes relative to the cue (the later it is sounded after the cue, the farther it is to the right), and the brightness is encoded by the loudness of the sound. The EyeMusic's algorithm uses different musical instruments for each of the five colours: white (vocals), blue (trumpet), red (reggae organ), green (synthesized reed), yellow (violin); Black is represented by silence. Prof. Amedi said "The notes played span five octaves and were carefully chosen by musicians to create a pleasant experience for the users." "We demonstrated in this study that the EyeMusic, which employs pleasant musical scales to convey visual information, can be used after a short training period (in some cases, less than half an hour) to guide movements, similar to movements guided visually," explained lead investigators Dr. Shelly Levy-Tzedek, an ELSC researcher at the Faculty of Medicine, Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and Prof. Amir Amedi. "The level of accuracy reached in our study indicates that performing daily tasks with an SSD is feasible, and indicates a potential for rehabilitative use," they added The study tested the ability of 18 blindfolded sighted individuals to perform movements guided by the EyeMusic, and compared those movements to those performed with visual guidance. At first, the blindfolded participants underwent a short familiarization session, where they learned to identify the location of a single object (a white square) or of two adjacent objects (a white and a blue square) In the test sessions, participants used a stylus on a digitizing tablet to point to a white square located either in the north, the south, the east or the west. In one block of trials they were blindfolded (SSD block), and in the other block (VIS block) the arm was placed under an opaque cover, so they could see the screen but did not have direct visual feedback from the hand. The endpoint location of their hand was marked by a blue square. In the SSD block, they received feedback via the EyeMusic. In the VIS block, the feedback was visual. "Participants were able to use auditory information to create a relatively precise spatial representation," notes Dr Levy-Tzedek. The study lends support to the hypothesis that representation of space in the brain may not be dependent on the modality with which the spatial information is received, and that very little training is required to create a representation of space without vision, using sounds to guide fast and accurate movements. "SSDs may have great potential to provide detailed spatial information for the visually impaired, allowing them to interact with their external environment and successfully make movements based on this information, but further research is now required to evaluate the use of our device in the blind," concluded Dr. Levy-Tzedek. Their results were published in the July issue of Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience. http://www.dnaindia.com/health/report_new-device-can-help-visually-impaired-see-using-music_1711345 Vikas Kapoor, MSN Id: dl_vi...@hotmail.com, Yahoo&Skype Id: dl_vikas, Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. Hi Amar, Most of what the manufacturers say about repair and shipping is useless since you will get a new cane for the cost of shipping it back to them for fixing. Get the right length. Re: [AI] any pay tm user here?
no no no! paytm is obviously reliable at least for me! the main hitch is they will be updating their site in a regular basis. and, their technical support is most appreciable except accessibility issues☺. you know? they have the best option to ad cash to our wallet unlike other sites. and, I love paytm for not verifying each mobiel which is to be recharged. apart from paytm there is another website "easymobilerecharge.com" but, they charge Rs. 2 for every recharge and, only mobile and data card can be recharged from there. but in paytm, you can recharge either mobile, data card and dish TV. indeed that SSL issue which are you telling it has no harm cause they have lot of resources to be implied. - Original Message - From: "akhilesh" To: Sent: Saturday, July 07, 2012 2:28 AM Subject: Re: [AI] any pay tm user here? Re: [AI] vierless net connections.
As far as I know wi fi is used for wireless networking and it helps to access internet only if the internet is available on the connected net work. Wireless internet connection is, on the other hand, connects to the internet directly. There are devices and connections with speed ranging from 80kbps to 7.2 Mbps. The speed you may get depends upon the service provider. The high speed conections are available mostly in cities only. The mobile companies are the main internet service providers. In metropolitan cities, there are some other also some other service providers who claime to be cheaper. [AI] Ordering Graphite Cane with rolling ball tip: U.S. people, recommendations please?
Hi Guys, I have to order one graphite cane with rolling ball tip for myself, and to the best of my knowledge they are not available in India. In such a case, U.S. is my choice for ordering the same. I have spoken with Able Data people, and will be speaking with AFB and some others. My research shows that there are two good manufacturers: Ambutech and Revolution Enterprises. Since I have no idea of U.S. manufacturers, I would be obliged if listers could suggest some good names so that I could choose the best from the available options. Also, what are the things to be considered while selecting a good cane manufacturer? So far I have got recommendation for Ambutech. Look forward for guidance. Regards -- Amar Jain. Re: [AI] Resisting exclusion
Thanks for this posting on AI. Since, I was a member of the new bill drafting committee, I want to respond to some of the issues mentioned in the article. You all know that I am a silent reader of the postings on AI and very rarely wrote. It is absolutely true that mental disability is not only among the most deprived human beings in the world, they are also the most neglected and face lifelong barriers to access education, work, play, social participation, marriage, and a life of ordinary human aspirations. Firstly, we had a number of detailed civil society consultations all over our country and almost all suggestions emerged in these consultations have been included in the new bill. So, I state that consultations have been done, of course, we can discuss more. We must recognize that legal capacity is a very serious issue facing the mental health sector in particular. There has been a serious deliberations in the committee about legal capacity and many schools of thought emerged. If we talk about legal capacity, we all will have to strongly advocate amendments to the Constitution of India. Article 326, explicitly excludes mentally unsound persons from voting and disability, unlike SC, ST, senior citizens, etc. has not been mentioned in any of the articles in a deterministic fashion. So, unless and until we advocate to amend the Constitution, the discussion about legal capacity will only remain a dream. We must also strongly advocate with the Government to be a part of the optional protocol of UNCRPD and do the needful. Since, plenary guardianship is fraught with possibilities of exploitation, the committee suggested limited guardianship. I agree that this is not the best solution, but, we should not make a law, wherein, fearing exploitation by 10%, we punish the remaining honest 90%. Not all guardians are dishonest and there are some people, who will be sensitive to the problems of mentally disabled. But, in any case, there should be a detailed discussion with the advocates of mental health sector and such matters should be decided and not by mere articles in news papers. I am not in agreement that the present PWD act is acknowledged to be out-dated. Let us remember that many of us benefited from this act. We should recognize that disability is an evolving concept, which is mentioned even in UNCRPD and no law will ever remain relevant for all times to come. There are very strong case laws and judgments generated by the PWD act and disabled persons withstood the discrimination on account of the intervention of courts from time to time, based on PWD act. As regards the definition of disabilities, the new bill has taken a twin approach. Disabilities are defined based on social model, but, when it comes to entitlements, the medical model will have to be depended up on. We had also suggested that the Government must put in place a medical model, which is contemporary and globally relevant. We must note that, inn the absence of a medical model, disabled persons will be left to whims and fancies of the medical profession for certification for various entitlements, which will only make our lot worse. It is for discussion, if all those under poverty, sociel economic exclution etc. should be covered under the present bill. In that case, I am afride that not less than 50% to 60% of our country will have be trreated as disabled. I saw a rreport from PTI about the delibarations at the National Advisary Council (NAC). Whhile, I agree with the most of the statements in that write-up, I think that one law and multiple laws have been wrongly reported. NAC only said that all the four acts viz. RCI, MH, NT and PWD acts relating to the disability sector should be revviewd for any internal contrediction, which In any case, the committee had taken care of, it was reported that NAC favours marging all the four laws in to one law. I am sorry that this is incorrect. In this contect, people should see the original write-up from NAC. Finally, all the stands taken by the three blind welfare institutions, NAB, NFB and AICB has totally vindicated by the NAC, which includes, among other things, choice among alternative education model viz. special schools, integrated education, inclusive education, home based education, etc. by the candidate, a single law and no need for any forther review, etc. But, we don't agree with the creation of national commissions, which has been a failure earlier. There has to be a very strong grevence redress machanism, may be in the form of district, state and national tribunal, which has been clearly outlined in the draft. Let us all hope that we will see the new law sooner rather than latter. regards - Original Message - From: "avinash shahi" To: "accessindia" ; "jnuvision" Sent: Sunday, July 01, 2012 3:22 AM Subject: [AI] Resisting exclusion July 1, 2012 As the Government looks at a new law to protect the ri

Re: [AI] Want to learn brail.
Hi Salim, Greetings from Eyeway Helpdesk! In order to learn Braill, would suggest you the following: 1. locate some organisation working for visually impaired people or some special school where you can go and learn Braille. NAB India is one such organisation we know but how far it is from your location is something you'll need to figure out. 2. Also, you might like to explore the possibility of someone coming to your place and teach you the Braille. 3. Saksham in Delhi and Vidya Vriksha in Chennai have self learning kit for learning Braille. Do get back if you need further information on this. With best regards, Satguru Rathi | Helpdesk Executive Project Eyeway - A knowledge resource for living a fuller life with vision loss C/o Score Foundation, 17/107 L.G.F., Vikram Vihar, Lajpat Nagar - 4, New Delhi - 110024.
