They have just returned yesterday night from a world totally different than ours. This competition on Information Technology skills was for youths with disabilities and was a part of Incheon Conference on Disability which included several mega high level events including UNESCAP meetings. More than 3500 persons with different disabilities had gathered at this most modern highly developed city near Seoul, South Korea. In the I T Challenge competition more than 300 persons with disabilities in the age of 16-25 participated from over 28 countries. All of them were invited by the Korean Society for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities. The Leonard Cheshire Disability India Office and its Young Voice program had facilitated the visit of Indian participants. Kartik won the first prize in the e-tools event and Ajay won the second prize in the e-life event. Kartik also won the best poem contest. Considering that the two Indian participants won prizes in three out of the five competitions it is indeed a remarkable achievement. Kartik received a brand new laptop and Ajay has got a Samsung Tablet-multimedia player. I accompanied them as the team leader and I also submitted a paper in the Global I T Seminar on status of I T proficiency for persons with disabilities in India. I hope to share my paper, media reports and photographs on these events soon. It was satisfactory to note that the level of education and I T skills among disabled in India is much better as compared to some Asia pacific countries. But in comparison to developed countries like Korea we are nowhere in terms of accessibility of infrastructure, use of technology, security, productivity, income, human rights, justice, equality and more.
