Subject: [AI] FM Transmitter and wireless keyboard

Hi,

I love playing around with gadgets. Offlate I have this crazy idea of
interacting with my desktop or laptop quite away from it, rather than
sitting there at a table for a long time and getting back aches etc. I've
been thinking of a cost-effective solution that I believe might work and
somewhat reduce the number of hours spent sitting at the computer and still
be able to interact with it at least at home.

The solution that I have in my mind is to get an FM transmitter and plug it
into the 3.5mm audio port of my computer, tune my FM radio to the frequency
of the transmitter, and control my computer using a wireless keyboard.

I have a foldable waterproof wireless keyboard and an FM radio. The maximum
working range of the keyboard is up to 15 meters or 49 feet in radius. But
the thing I'm worried about is how far does a typical FM transmitter work?
Anyone using it?

Do you have any other good alternatives to the above apart from suggesting
me to take breaks frequently?

I think an FM transmitter should not cost me more than INR.800. What do you
think?

Thanks

Re: [AI] Some doubts regarding braille

2013-04-04 Thread Ekinath Khedekar
Hi Ajay,

Braille certainly becomes handy during ppts as you don’t have to hear
and then speak. Also you are utilizing one more of your senses; touch.

Listening and then speaking breaks the rhythm of the presentation.
Learning Braille is not a big deal, but it takes time to use it
speedily. Also it’s bulky, but great tool when you don’t want to be
loaded with gadget all over your body. It gives me free mind and I
speak better that way.

Do learn it. Learning is never a waste.

And yah, congratulations for your short listings.

Good luck

CEDAW Alternative Report: On “Women with Disabilities”

8th April 2013, YMCA, Quartergate, Pune

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women
(CEDAW), adopted in 1979 by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, defines
what constitutes discrimination against women and sets up an agenda for
national action to end such discrimination. For more information on CEDAW, you
can visit http://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/cedaw/cedaw.htm.

CEDAW establishes Universal Minimum Standards of Women’s Human Rights, by which
all countries must abide; it also provides a mechanism through which the
implementation of obligations by state parties (i.e. signatory members) under
the Convention can be monitored. By demanding the practical realization of
rights, CEDAW promotes the ‘Substantive Model of Equality: Equality of
Opportunity, Equality of Access, and Equality of Results’.

Member States including India that have ratified CEDAW are required to report
to the CEDAW Committee every four years on progress made in the implementation
of CEDAW at national level. Members may like to access the Government of
India’s (GoI) II and III Periodic Report on CEDAW at
http://wcd.nic.in/cedawrep2005.pdf (PDF; Size: 638KB). The Draft Report of
combined Fourth and Fifth Periodic Reports of India to CEDAW can be accessed at
http://wcd.nic.in/cedawdraft20nov2011.pdf (PDF; Size: 2.99MB).

Alternative report serves as important complements to the official government
report. It provides the CEDAW Committee with insight as to the questions that
might be posed to governments as they present their reports. National Alliance
of Women (NAWO; http://www.nawoindia.org/main.asp) has been co-coordinating the
efforts of writing and presenting the Alternative Report in the previous years
(the initial report in 2000; and the II and III report in 2007), while the GoI
report was under review by the CEDAW Committee. Previous reports by NAW can be
accessed on their website.

I invite you to join in the meeting and give your specific inputs to the
preparation of the IV and V Govt and Alternative Report on the UN CEDAW. While
providing your inputs, members may specifically like to share the following in
the context of disability:

Overview and assessment - Prevalence of the problem pertaining to particular
article / Special concerns / General Recommendation(the present status of
women).
Cases where human rights of women have been violated – discrimination faced by
women which led to deprivation of rights.
Information on the impact and progress made by the State/GoI in implementing
the CEDAW Convention
Inadequacies and gaps in laws and policies, and their implementation (e.g.
obstacles women face in accessing laws or how these obstacles can be addressed)
Obstacles or contributory factors preventing women from realizing their rights
(e.g. social, political, legal, economic rights, etc)
Suggestions and Recommendations – Policies, Programmes, Legislative measures.
It would help you, if you also go through some of the useful documents
(mentioned below), which provides guidelines in preparing the Alternative
Report. I look forward to a highly engaging discussion and enthusiastic inputs
from all our members.

Re: [AI] Two Eyeway alerts

2013-04-04 Thread Raaj
I think this has to be taken up with CCPD. If that is given under the
visually handicapped quota, how come they can say low vision can apply? I
think it has to be only for those who are having only 40% of vision. If I'm
correct. I think United India is trying to cheat visually handicapped quota
by recruiting sighted persons.

 Reply-To: WebAIM Discussion List webaim-fo...@list.webaim.org

It is with sadness that I learned this morning of the passing of our
friend Dr. Cynthia Waddell. I consider Cynthia one of the matriarchs
of the field of web accessibility. She authored some of the very first
web accessibility standards in 1995... before most anyone else even
considered the impact of web accessibility, or even the web for that
matter. She was a staunch advocate for the rights of people with
disabilities, having testified before US Congress, the UN, and well,
she just seemed to be everywhere that mattered. She was a very active
participant on this list until recent years, always willing to provide
 helpful answers.

In nearly every one of WebAIM's webinars and trainings, we begin with
a definition of web accessibility that Cynthia coined: Development of
information systems flexible enough to accommodate the needs of the
broadest range of users... regardless of age or disability. She
certainly helped further that cause and will be missed.

2013-04-04 Thread Ekinath Khedekar
Hi

I have always been interested in geography. It’s interesting to know
how countries of the world are placed on our planet.

Thankfully, I remember my school maps when I could see, but not sure
if point to point audio description gives an over all picture.

Even tactile maps if on the flat surface, does not offer proper
understanding of placements of various countries on the round planet.

Therefore, kindly refer any ball like globe with Braille designations
to understand world better for Vis who haven’t seen it before.

Thanks and regards
