before sending I have some questions. 1. Cann we send sms like, start
indian news. To get regular automatic latest indian news? 2. What
about cricket news? I mean they update news every session by session.
Like after 10 overs indian scored, 68 run whithout any wickets.

Hi Kapil, to get regular cricket update automatically, just sms 'START
CRIC' to 922119. Otherwise if you want cricked update upon
request, then send 'BAT' to the same number. Hope this helps.

Blind, pregnant woman thrown into well
Staff Correspondent
Rescued by public after 15-hour ordeal
A blind woman, who was pushed into a well, in what appears to be a
premeditated murderous attempt, survived after shepherds heard her
cries for help and rescued her after more than 15 hours, in Bagepalli
village of Chickballapur district.

The police have now launched a manhunt to nab the assailant, Adappa
(47) of a nearby village.

The woman, who is pregnant, has been shifted to a government hospital
in Chickballapur and her condition is stated to be progressing, though
she was complaining of stomach ache.

The police said the assailant Adappa lured the woman into a
relationship with a promise to marry her some seven months ago. After
she became pregnant, there was some pressure on him to marry her.

On Saturday night, the police said, he asked her to accompany him
promising to marry. He took her to the outskirts where she pushed her
into an unused agricultural well. Believing that she died, he fled
from the scene.

However, the gritty woman began shouting for help but none could hear
her. Only on Sunday morning, some 15 hours later, some shepherds who
were passing by heard her cries and rushed to her help.

Though the woman was rescued on Sunday afternoon, the matter was
reported to the police only on Tuesday morning. It was said that the
family members of Aadappa approached the woman’s father seeking a
‘settlement’ of the issue, but the woman’s family declined the
overtures.

Meanwhile, the Chickballapur District Association for People with
Disabilities demanded that the police nab the culprit and prosecute
him. “There is no question of a compromise. The accused person must be
brought to book”, the association president Raghunatha Reddy said. The
association, he said, would lend assistance to the family in the legal
battle that lies ahead. The Bagepally police have registered a case
and investigation is on.

Re: [AI] Listen: World's first engineering college for blind soon

2013-07-09 Thread avinash shahi
Akhilesh, your idea is an interesting one...
Generally, Seats are reserved in educational institutions for
disabled, here this can be vice versa...
So there will be drastic shift indeed.
And Sorry I beg to differ on the understanding of mainstream.
If this University gets fructified, and inovation galore, Who knows we
could teach people look this is mainstream...
Idea has been conceptualised, now hope all goes well.
And yes, as far as courses are concerned, Lets hope to hear from
Devnar Foundation officials.is anybody from this institution on the
list?

2013-07-09 Thread payal
How successful and complete these initiatives are, remains to be seen. Not
just setting it up, but seeing a batch through the first year is something
I'd be waiting eagerly to see.

It is great to talk about these things, but the effectiveness and utility of
such institutions, not just in the inception stage, but sustaining them
through years is something I would look for. Some might say looking too much
into the future, but, that is what is eventually required here, if that at
all.

Aha! Wonderful project is in the offing..
As about to lost in the dreams in this rainy night in Delhi on the
bed, just got alerted this link by my roomy.. So I thought, why to
delay, let this known to hundreds waiting for this dream to come true.
This university, if gets in to existence, will change the entire
conventional understanding about education among visually challenged.

HYDERABAD: The students are waiting and the software and syllabus is
ready for the world's first engineering college for the visually
impaired, but a search for suitable land to set up the multi-crore
campus that could empower hundreds of special children is where the
project is stuck.

An ambitious blueprint to set up an engineering college by the Devnar
Foundation, with help from professors of BITS Pilani, along with 20
different digital and Braille software and initial funding arrangement
is however ready.

Andhra Pradesh has a caseload of 10,000 visually impaired children
below 10 years and only 2,000 manage to go to a special school, a
scenario which reflects a nationwide issue, prompted Devnar
Foundation, which also runs the world's biggest blind school to do
more.

Since eight students from their school completed engineering from
mainstream engineering colleges and one doing further studies in
Boston, USA, Devnar's ophthalmologist founder A Sai Baba Goud decided
to propose setting up an engineering college. Goud says visually
challenged students often encounter pervasive and ongoing
discrimination and lack of facilities. It is due to the same reason
why only a meagre figure is enrolled in schools in the state.

Despite being visually challenged, such students are brilliant with
recent instances of people clearing chartered accountancy and going
for higher studies in the US.

Andhra Pradesh has the highest number of engineering colleges in the
country with the total number crossing 700. But not a single college
is customized to cater to the needs of the differently-abled.

"We need a small plot of about 2-3 acres. We have told the government
that we have donors ready to help and also the faculty to teach," said
Goud.

Goud said he is ready with the syllabus and required softwares and
authorities have identified land in Mahindra Hills in Secunderabad and
have intimated the same to the government.

He said getting affiliation from both Jawaharlal Nehru Technical
University and BITS, Pilani won't be difficult. "But lack of land is
the major stumbling block for the project," said Goud.

"Many students are enthusiastic and eager to study after intermediate
but they have problems in mainstream colleges," he added.

The move had rekindled hopes of hundreds of parents who dreamt of
seeing their sons and daughters holding the coveted engineering
degrees despite their disability.

The Devnar School for Blind has been offering English medium education
right from primary school up to intermediate, and has been shaping
lives of hundreds of students who are challenged by vision loss ever
since 1992.

Currently, there is not a single college for the blind offering
courses in engineering. The school authorities say that if they start
a college in Hyderabad, not just locals but also those from other
parts of the country will get a chance to fulfill their cherished
dreams.

There was a blind man in Chambal, who helped police in nabbing lot of
dacoits and robbers.
If anybody has some information about him, please share it with the list.
He was also a great inspiration for the public like Kannappan.

Hi,
Good one. but the idea of an exclusive college seems not so good.
we're trying hard to come to main Stream. certain number of seats
should be reserved for non-disable people too.

Disable community cannot afford another exclusive college away from mainstream.

The school authorities say that if they start
a college in Hyderabad, not just locals but also those from other
parts of the country will get a chance to fulfill their cherished
dreams.

Hi Vamshi, it seams that you already have earned your master degree
and you didn't enclose your final marksheet while applying for UGC Net
last time. Therefore they are asking you to submit your final
marksheet of master degree . While in my case they will not ask me to
submit it because I have just completed my master degree, in December
2012 I applied as appearing candidate. Now you will have to supply
necessary documents.

Subject: [AI] IBook a book reading App on IOS

Friends

I am posting both on AI and Mobile.AI list.
This is a book reading app, which I suppose came default on IOS. It is
fully accessible and it has Table of Contents, bookmar, Note taking
options etc.

Double Tab on the Library button and you will get a list of all books
available on your system

Double tab on the title to read it.
On the pages spinbox flick down to go to the next page and flick up to go
to the previous page.

Thereafter, flick left and the contents of that page would be read out.
Here, you can also flick 2 fingers down to read continuously. In some
books, I have seen it stop at the end of the chapter.

You can also do 2 finger rotar to select words, letters, heading etc.

I read a few books this way. There are practically no Indian books.
However I chanced on this title: Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan
by Toru Dutt.

There were a few surprises for me. Very strangely, I don't recall hearing
about her in the past. She is the first Indian poetess to have written in
English. It was very surprising a quality work of such great stature is in
wilderness.

This title is also available in Project gutenburg and the link for it is:

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/23245/23245-h/23245-h.htm

The vikipedia info on her is at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toru_Dutt

The default TTS on IOS read it beautifully using the correct pauses. One
can reduce the speech rate to enjoy it better.

I would urge all AI members to read it.

[AI] Times of India: Device that can help blind ‘see’ through ears

2013-07-09 Thread anil kumar
Device that can help blind ‘see’ through ears
PTI | Jul 9, 2013, 02.42 PM IST

LONDON: How well can you 'see' with your ears? Scientists claim to
have developed a "revolutionary" new device that helps blind people
'see' by using sounds to build an image in their minds of the things
around them.

The new sensory substitution device 'vOICe' trains the brain to turn
sounds into images and could be used as an alternative to invasive
treatment for blind and partially-sighted people, researchers said.

The research team from the University of Bath, in UK, led by Dr
Michael Proulx looked at how blind-folded sighted participants
responded to an eye test using the device.

They were asked to perform a standard eye chart test called the
Snellen Tumbling E test, which asked participants to view the letter E
turned in four different directions and in various sizes.

Normal, best-corrected visual acuity is considered 20/20, calculated
in terms of the distance (in feet) and the size of the E on the eye
chart.

The participants, even without any training in the use of the device,
were able to perform the best performance possible, nearly 20/400.
This limit appears to be the highest resolution currently possible
with the ever-improving technology.

"This level of visual performance exceeds that of the current invasive
technique for vision restoration, such as stem cell implants and
retinal prostheses after extensive training," Proulx said in a
statement.

"A recent study found successful vision at a level of 20/800 after the
use of stem cells. Although this might improve with time and provide
the literal sensation of sight, the affordable and non-invasive nature
of The vOICe provides another option," Proulx said.

He said sensory substitution devices are not only an alternative, but
might also be best employed in combination with such invasive
techniques to train the brain to see again or for the first time.

The findings were published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology.

sorry in advance if this is against list guide lines!

[AI] We Have a Treaty…and It’s Great

2013-07-09 Thread Siddalingeshwar Ingalagi

From: Bookshare

Subject: We Have a Treaty…and It’s Great
To: ingalagisi...@gmail.com

Dear Bookshare Supporter,

We wanted to follow up on our last email regarding the "Treaty for
the Blind" to share some exciting news: we have a treaty...and it's
great!

Thanks to the petition signing, the calls, and the public
conversation you helped generate, the United States government stood
up to private interests who sought to derail the progress we've made.
Ultimately, the United States delegation helped to negotiate a treaty
that will make it possible for people who are blind, or have other
print disabilities such as dyslexia, to get access to the books they
need no matter where they live.

So what does the "Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published
Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired, or Otherwise
Print Disabled" mean for Bookshare? Ideally, that we can serve more
users better! Once the United States ratifies the treaty, it will be
possible for Bookshare to get more content for Americans from more
sources outside of the United States and in more languages. It will
also be possible for Bookshare to deliver our entire library--instead
of only the titles we have permissions from publishers to share--to
people with print disabilities living in other countries.

This is extremely exciting, but to be clear, things won't change
right away. In fact, it could take up to a year, maybe much longer,
for the United States to ratify the treaty. That's why Benetech will
continue working with coalition partners, like the National
Federation of the Blind and the American Council of the Blind, to
determine the best path forward to ratification.

As we move forward, we will update you with any major news--whether
it's big progress we've made or big roadblocks we've encountered. We
may also need to call on the support and power of the Bookshare
community again to help key decision makers see the impact Bookshare
is having on your lives. In the meantime, you can always visit the
Bookshare Blog -
http://cts.vresp.com/c/?Benetech/b1cd00e110/3f32164ae6/f2331dc580 for updates.

Again, thank you. Your support and action helped us to achieve a
historic treaty that will change the lives of millions around the
world.

Sincerely,

Jim Fruchterman & Betsy Beaumon

Dear all Access Indians, We have heard about several visually-challenged people
excelling in their spheres of activity, despite handicap. Likewise, a
28-year-old totally blind man in Trichy (Tamil Nadu) stuns everyone by his
extraordinary talent in repairing any branded motorbikes perfectly. S.
Kannappan, a bachelor, is an inspiration for the people of Pandamangalam in
Trichy city. They admire him for his passion to obtain knowledge and technical
skills needed for the profession. Kannappan is not blind by birth. He lost his
eye-sight after he was afflicted with brain-fever when he was just four years
of age. Nevertheless, he never lost his hope to find his way to succeed in life
and became a two-wheeler mechanic. Born in a poor family, Kannappan now runs a
small workshop at Pandamangalam road in Woraiyur in partnership with his
childhood friend Ramesh. "I can repair any branded bikes, I sense the parts
with my fingers and shoot the troubles. As I lost my eye-sight at an early age,
I
can only visualize bikes in my mind," Kannappan says who became mechanic in
the year 2000. He was initially trained by two mechanics Srini and Moorthy
quite casually in the locality. Earlier, he honed his skills by repairing
bicycles at home. That experience pushed him up to become a two-wheeler
mechanic. "I want to dedicate my whole life in this field, my father, brother
and my sister-in-law always encourage me. I have no personal wishes other than
achieving the pinnacle of success in my profession, I want to provide a good
service to my customers," Kannappan proudly says. His work is highly
appreciated by his customers and the reputation earns him a lot of customers.
Durairaj, a sub-inspector of police knows well Kannappan's talent. "I've been
servicing my bikes for the past seven years here, I never found any fault with
his service, even normal people too commit mistakes sometimes, but Kannappan is
extraordinary," he sums up. Kannappan has his own ways of identifying
mechanical p
roblems by hearing the trademark sound of the bike. He's perfect at his work.
If he's committed to complete a task, he totally involves himself in the work
until he succeeds in it. By appreciating his extraordinary talent, a leading
motorbike manufacturer dealer appointed him as a mechanic in Ramanathapuram,
but he resigned and started his own workshop. The general public in the area
want government to help him financially so that he can grow in his career. I'm
writing this article on Access India domain to illustrate the fact that how a
person challenges blindness and proves his skills efficiently to the world so
that blind individuals may never be deemed as good-for-nothing at all.
He who works with his hands is laborer, he who works with his hands and his
head is a craftsman, he who works with his hands and his head and his heart is
an artist.

Warm regards.

For all probability it is the recovery folder where the image of the OS is
kept. Don't delete it. It should be pretty huge in size.

I have got a folder in d drive with a strange name.
I did not create it, and I am also not aware about how did it come in d

Whenever I try to delete it, it says "access is denied".
Please guide me on how to delete it.

Dear Amiyo

As I mentioned, the app came by default in IOS.
She learnt French first, thereafter English and finally Sanskrit. At such
a tender age she left a huge legacy behind. It is indeed remarkable how
she could develop such mastery on the language in such a short time. It
seems she was in a hurry to finish her work which would ordinarily take
many a life time.
I really can't understand why she did not get the fame she richly
deserves.

Toru Dutt was also the first Indian to write in French. She wrote some
prose

in French. Edmund Goose, a noted Victorian critic, wrote that only two
Indians wrote Englishman's English, Toru Dutt and Aravinda Ghosh. It is
unfortunate that this young lady died of consumption at a tender age of
21.

What is the link for this book reading application?

Subject: [AI] Can blindness really be challenged in life?

Dear all Access Indians, We have heard about several visually-challenged
people excelling in their spheres of activity, despite handicap. Likewise, a
28-year-old totally blind man in Trichy (Tamil Nadu) stuns everyone by his
extraordinary talent in repairing any branded motorbikes perfectly. S.
Kannappan, a bachelor, is an inspiration for the people of Pandamangalam in
Trichy city. They admire him for his passion to obtain knowledge and
technical skills needed for the profession. Kannappan is not blind by birth.
He lost his eye-sight after he was afflicted with brain-fever when he was
just four years of age. Nevertheless, he never lost his hope to find his way
to succeed in life and became a two-wheeler mechanic. Born in a poor family,
Kannappan now runs a small workshop at Pandamangalam road in Woraiyur in
partnership with his childhood friend Ramesh. "I can repair any branded
bikes, I sense the parts with my fingers and shoot the troubles. As I lost
my eye-sight at an early age, I can only visualize bikes in my mind,"
Kannappan says who became mechanic in the year 2000. He was initially
trained by two mechanics Srini and Moorthy quite casually in the locality.
Earlier, he honed his skills by repairing bicycles at home. That experience
pushed him up to become a two-wheeler mechanic. "I want to dedicate my whole
life in this field, my father, brother and my sister-in-law always encourage
me. I have no personal wishes other than achieving the pinnacle of success
in my profession, I want to provide a good service to my customers,"
Kannappan proudly says. His work is highly appreciated by his customers and
the reputation earns him a lot of customers. Durairaj, a sub-inspector of
police knows well Kannappan's talent. "I've been servicing my bikes for the
past seven years here, I never found any fault with his service, even normal
people too commit mistakes sometimes, but Kannappan is extraordinary," he
sums up. Kannappan has his own ways of identifying mechanical problems by
hearing the trademark sound of the bike. He's perfect at his work. If he's
committed to complete a task, he totally involves himself in the work until
he succeeds in it. By appreciating his extraordinary talent, a leading
motorbike manufacturer dealer appointed him as a mechanic in Ramanathapuram,
but he resigned and started his own workshop. The general public in the area
want government to help him financially so that he can grow in his career.
I'm writing this article on Access India domain to illustrate the fact that
how a person challenges blindness and proves his skills efficiently to the
world so that blind individuals may never be deemed as good-for-nothing at
all.
He who works with his hands is laborer, he who works with his hands and his
head is a craftsman, he who works with his hands and his head and his heart
is an artist.

Re: [AI] Help needed to resolve work place issues .

2013-07-09 Thread Ajay Minocha
Hello,
I am forgetting the name but some desktop magnifiers can prove like a
boon for you.
their price is around rs 4500/- to the best of my information.
unfortunatley, there is no practical sollution for scanning and
reading hindi books with screen reader at least without editing.
So I would suggest you to either buyy a hand held video magnifier or a
desktop size video magnifier.
