Re: [AI] Assistance on Delhi Metro!
if you are at the origin station you can ask people at the customer care centre to help you. you need to tell them where will you get down and they communicate to the concerned staff at the other station. if you have boarded the train by yourself and need help at any other station then in that condition also you can call this same number and you will get assistance. Re: [AI] Assistance on Delhi Metro!
That is interesting about Toronto. London Underground and national rail in the UK provide excellent services. You can just walk up to a London Underground station and ask for help. They will put you on the train, inform the driver of my destination and call ahead to the destination station. There is usually someone waiting on the other side to escort you out of the station. With long distance trains, it works in a similar fashion although you have to book assistance in advance. You can get to the station and give the number a call about 3 to 4 minutes in advance. Someone will meet you at the gate. If you are already in the metro and want help when you are getting off, again you can call couple of station before your destination. The system looks and sounds interesting. [AI] DU: 484 laptops distributed among disabled students
'Distributing? Distrubuted?' is it a gift? and importantly Tiwariji said: Prof Dinesh's promiss has been fulfilled... How blind fraternity views such steps? food for thought. Delhi University has started distributing laptops but only to students belonging to the persons-with-disability category. As many as 484 laptops have already been distributed through DU's equal opportunity cell. The ones for the general category, however, will take longer. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/484-laptops-distributed-among-disabled-students/articleshow/21498487.cms Till Monday, we had distributed 477. Today we gave seven more, says Bipin Tiwary, deputy dean and officer on special duty, EOC, adding, The vice-chancellor's promise is being fulfilled. Fifty one colleges received laptops and the distribution has been on the basis of admission data provided by them to the EOC. Not all colleges are giving them to the students just yet as admissions are still on but if they end up with extra, they will keep the machines for the use of senior students, says Tiwary. Some colleges are holding functions - Kirori Mal did on Tuesday with Tiwary, Usha Rao and ZVS Prasad (planning and finance officer) attending - for distribution. Students will be allowed to keep the laptops for the entire duration of their four-year undergraduate programme. The laptops - Lenovo Thinkpads - have Windows operating systems and come with a variety of software for accessibility. They come with screen readers and an open-source software to help students study mathematics, says Tiwary, Besides that, the operating system comes with some built-in accessibility features. There will be tools to convert sounds to text for the hearing impaired and students will be able to assign keys for certain functions if they can't use both hands. Shri Ram College of Commerce, however, has already started handing the laptops to the students. We got 17 laptops and have already distributed 14. We have taken the names and signatures of students who have received the machines. They will have to bring the machines back every three months for inspection, says principal, P C Jain. Re: [AI] DU: 484 laptops distributed among disabled students
Now if all blind students who have been empowered with Laptops and will be empowered by the states start using Internet regularly, We can build a very active vibrant community comradeship on the web. And discuss many challenges faced by us in multiple walks of life. So Now we have HCU, JNU, EFLU and DU who have provided laptops for self-studies. Now Banaras Hindu University and others need to be pressurised to facilitate laptops to the persons with blindness. So Urban and Rurar divide among us can be bridged to some extent. we get same kind of help here in Vienna like in London. At 09:51 AM 8/2/2013, you wrote: That is interesting about Toronto. London Underground and national rail in the UK provide excellent services. Re: [AI] The case for switching to the Mac
From: Raaj vennillaicecr...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Tuesday, 30 July 2013 9:45 PM Subject: [AI] The case for switching to the Mac Hello everyone, I just gone through this article and I feel it is interesting and this made me to think of switching over either. So I do hope this could interest some of you here. The case for switching to the Mac 07/29/2012 By Christopher O'Meally For blind users, the choice between a mac or a pc can be a daunting one. Trying to decide what computer would best fit the needs of the user can be a challenge in some situations, so This article will explain why the Mack could be a viable solution and what to look at when making this choice. Operating Systems. The mac's operating system is quite different from Windows, but easy to learn. Let's take a look at some of its features. The finder. When logging in, the desktop is the first window that appears. Unlike Windows, the Mac's desktop does not contain much; most of the shortcuts and files are located elsewhere. In addition, the computer's hard drive and devices that are connected will appear in this window. Digging deeper in to the finder, the user folder is shown first. The main user directory contains documents, downloads, music, movies, pictures, and frequently used folders specific to the user logged on at the time. . The finder is composed of three main windows, with a tool bar and 3 buttons at the top. The tool bar contains navigation buttons and these help control navigation in the finder. Next is the side bar. This is used to quickly switch between the most popular folders on the computer. By default, they will be the folders mentioned in the user folder, as well as any network locations and external devices. Things can be added to the sidebar, but beware that doing this can make it a bit cluttered. Next is the vertical splitter. This just moves the file group left or right depending on what the slider is set to. Note: this is strictly a visual thing; it doesn't make a difference when listening with a screen reader,. Next is the file group. Once a folder is selected in the sidebar, enter the file group to browse these files. Most, if not all finder windows will be laid out this way. This is because if there are many elements on the screen, it is not necessary to navigate through all of one group to get to another. This eliminates the need for tabbing and groping around crowded and complicated dialog boxes and interfaces. Selecting a file brings up the quick look window. If the file is large, the size will be displayed. If the file is video or audio, it will start playing. That comes in handy when browsing unnamed tracks, so it is not necessary to open a new program just to sample them. In windows, the equivalent is windows explorer. Once logged in, as on the Mac, the desktop is the starting location, which in most cases is a bit more cluttered than the mac's. Most program shortcuts and folders will be put here. Most programs will place icons on the desktop by default, but this setting can be changed in setup. But all in all, it serves the same purpose. Unlike with the Mac, there is no quick look option when viewing files. The properties window in the applications context menu gives a bit of feedback on the file, but quick look gives faster feedback when it's really needed. A useful feature of OS 10 is the dock. Any IPhone users will know what that feature is. It is a place at the bottom of the screen to store the most used applications and folders, so navigation to them is possible, no matter where the user is located in the operating system. In windows, a fast way to get to applications is the start menu. The start menu will show the programs used most frequently, as well as letting users choose the most recent files opened in a particular program. A notable feature of the Mac is spotlight. Searching by file type, name, and location are some of its basic features. Locations can be added and removed, and external drives as well as network shares can be included or excluded in the indexing preferences. This can be done by opening spotlight with command space, then command comma to open preferences. The search bar in windows can also be customized to include or exclude file locations and types. This can be done by typing indexing options in the search bar, or navigating to start, then control panel, and typing indexing options in the search box. The menu bar in OS 10 is a way of browsing most options in the system, and the application that is currently open. First is the apple menu, where the user can view their system information, perform software updates, get to the app store, force quit applications, and shut down the computer. the application menu, which changes names depending on the application one has open, will always be there. The file, edit, and view menus normally stay in the menu bar, unless the application

Re: [AI] Wikipedia boom in Marathi, Malayalam and other desi languages
hi, who's the blind contributor mentioned here??? i wish they had mentioned his name. On 8/1/13, Siddalingeshwar Ingalagi ingalagisi...@gmail.com wrote: Wikipedia boom in Marathi, Malayalam and other desi languages Aug 1, 2013, 01.46AM IST TNN[ Sandhya Soman ] Wiki, the world’s largest online encyclopaedia where anyone can write and edit articles, didn’t have much content in vernacular till a few years ago.MUMBAI: A vibrant vernacular Wikipedia seems to be taking root in India. In the last eight months, the number of Wikipedia entries has grown substantially in 20 Indian languages, says a study by the Bangalore-based Centre for Internet and Society (CIS). Wiki, the world's largest online encyclopaedia where anyone can write and edit articles, didn't have much content in vernacular till a few years ago. According to the study, Wikis in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi have added thousands of new articles on various subjects from September 2012 to April 2013. A few of these pages were viewed more during this period. Marathi, which had 30 lakh page views per month previously, had another 10 lakh visitors, while Bengali Wikipedia had 14 lakh page views. While Malayalam Wiki took the top position with an enviable team of 100 plus editors, the number Hindi, Marathi and Sanskrit editors came down. Marathi has 40,000 articles. But most editors in Mumbai prefer to work on English. Pune has more Marathi editors,' says T Vishnu Vardhan, programme director, Access to Knowledge project at CIS. In the last two years, the demand for knowledge in Indian languages has grown as we have moved to the motto of 'roti, kapda and internet', says Vardhan. One of the reasons for growth is that many browsers now support Indian language scripts. But this was not the case in early 2000. Though many wanted to read and type in their own language, there was no browser support, says Shiju Alex, blogger and Malayalam Wiki editor. Moreover, many didn't know how to type in their mother tongues. But once Indian languages were encoded in Unicode, the fonts became accessible. There was no need to write Malayalam in English and people started blogging in their mother tongues, says Alex. According to Vardhan, communities with better literacy rates seem to have taken the lead online. Telugu Wiki is stronger as internet penetration in Andhra Pradesh is higher than in places where Bhojpuri or Assamese is spoken. As with most online language initiatives, the Wiki movement was also fuelled by the diaspora. Tinu Cherian Abraham, a former board member of the Wikimedia India chapter, talks about how an NRI's love for Malayalam kick-started the project. But now there are many Wiki foot soldiers in India, including a blind editor of Hindi Wikipedia and an elderly contributor from Kerala whose passion for free knowledge has helped him forget his ailments. source link is: http://m.timesofindia.com/tech/tech-news/internet/Wikipedia-boom-in-Marathi-Malayalam-and-other-desi-languages/articleshow/21518534.cms -- thanks and regards. [AI] Learn about FITTLE, a toy that helps blind children read: from ted.com.
Ophthalmologist Anthony Vipin Das is currently working on a new toy for the blind, FITTLE, with Tania Jain, a designer from National Institute of Design, Gandhinagar. The toy will help blind children learn to read Braille while getting a sense of the shape of the world around them. We asked him to tell us all about it. Below, his essay on what this toy is … and how it came about. For blind children, learning Braille is an integral part of how they interface with the world, and most current haptic technology for the blind focuses on Braille. However, teaching Braille at a young age is definitely a challenge. For example, a child who needs to be taught the word “fish” in Braille has no idea what a real fish looks like. He feels four Braille letters that stand for F-I-S-H, and cannot even try to visualise how a fish looks. I feel that learning of Braille can be made a lot more fun if it’s taught in an interactive way. Tania Jain approached me with this idea at a DIY workshop “Engineering the Eye” that I co-organized with the Camera Culture Group of Ramesh Raskar from the MIT Media Lab. Her concept involves breaking down objects into as many blocks as there are letters in the word. So, the word “fish” is constructed by joining together four puzzle blocks, which have the letters F-I-S-H on them, each embossed in Braille. When the visually challenged kid fits together the blocks by feeling and matching the right shapes, he can read the word “fish” embossed in Braille, as well as feel around the contours of the entire block, which is shaped like a fish. In this way, it becomes easy for the kid to understand shapes of various objects — and it can be taught by a parent or a teacher. The possibilities are endless. A look at the FITTLE puzzle for the word ‘fish.’ This new toy, which we call FITTLE (“fit the puzzle”), helps children learn individual letters of Braille, construct words, and understand the form of objects, all through a playful game. Essentially, we are changing the way that blind children at a young age are going to perceive the world around them. We wish to help spread this idea as far and wide as possible. With current technology, FITTLE can be downloaded through open-source platforms and the pieces can be 3D printed by anyone who wishes to do so. We are in the process of creating the first alphabet series, as well as a graded curriculum where the child can progress to different levels according to age at LV Prasad Eye Institute, India. We are excited at how these toys can radically change the learning process of Braille and the way children will feel form. Moving forward, Tania and the FITTLE team want to experiment with different materials that would feel like the original object’s texture — like rubber to give the feel of a real fish — for kids to understand even better. It’s been an amazing experience to mentor the team so far, and we are really looking forward to reaching every blind child with FITTLE to help them perceive and understand the world around them in a playful way! source- http://blog.ted.com/2013/08/02/the-shape-of-things-fellows-friday-with-anthony-vipin-das-on-fittle-a-toy-that-helps-blind-children-read/ Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] reseting passward
if you have enabled the 2 step varification on the account, probbably you might get the varification code to reset the password on that number as wel. see if you are getting the option to send the code to that phone number? if it doesnt works, you can even recover your account, the system a little trickey though. on the recovery page, you need to select the appropriate option. google will ask you to fill a form where you need to provide some account specific details such as, witch was the last mail received, whom to last email was sent etc. one more guess, ask your friend to try to login to there account from the same computer that he usually uses to access that account.
