A Ph.D.-holder blind woman, who was on a hunger strike in front of the
Divisional Commissioner’s office here since August 15 because she did
not get a job under the disabled quota, was forcibly shifted to a
hospital and made to end her fast on Monday, the police said.

Dr. Fatima, the woman, applied to various government departments for a
job under the quota for the disabled after doing her doctorate in
Political Science in 2010, but in vain.

She hails from Bhabra in Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh.

On Monday, women police personnel forcibly took her to a hospital as
her condition was deteriorating. She was forced to end the fast, the
police added.- PTI

2013-08-20 Thread avinash shahi
The most noticeable part of this report is that she was alone on
hunger strike, yes alone.
This aspect draws two interpretations:
One: She is so depressed and felt low that couldn't share this with
people fearing their reaction to a hunger strike call by a PHD which
is still the privilege of less than 0.5 per cent of Indians.
2. Kudos to this lady, she managed to keep the morale and
determination high that decided to sit on hunger strike alone. hope
she gets jobs as per her qualification and suitability soon.

I think we need more facts to comment on this issue. Just because
someone is a PhD holder, he/she is not entitled to any job.

What is the job/s she has applied for? Is the job reserved for PWD?
How many candidates applied for the job? Is the job allotted to
another disabled or non-disabled?

[AI] Eyeway News Alert

2013-08-20 Thread Eyeway Helpdesk
Hello Everyone,

Our communication team uploaded the following news articles to the Eyeway
website:

1. Indian blind football team set for international tournament

http://www.eyeway.org/?q=indian-blind-football-team-set-international-tourna
ment

Although blind football isn't very well known in India, a team are going to
the Thailand Open Football 5-A-Side Tournament 2013 in Bangkok - the first
time an Indian team will participate in an international football event.

2. Railways to provide Braille signage in coaches for visually impaired
passengers

http://www.eyeway.org/?q=railways-provide-braille-signage-coaches-visually-i
mpaired-passengers

As a part of its social commitment to make the Railways more friendly
towards specially abled passengers, Indian Railways has decided to provide
Braille stickers in coaches to facilitate visually impaired passengers.

(I know Avinash sent around the TOI article to colleagues. This story was
picked up by a wide number of media outlets. I have chosen this one because
the TOI one seemed to have opinion in it, and this one is purely factual).

3. In Jharkhand, kids' eyes bear brunt of poor diet
http://www.eyeway.org/?q=jharkhand-kids-eyes-bear-brunt-poor-diet

Work taking place in Jharkhand to combat preventable blindness in children,
which seems to be poverty related.

Enjoy!!

[AI] Virginia woman with Down syndrome becomes hero to the disabled - The Washington Post

2013-08-20 Thread avinash shahi
http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/virginia-woman-with-down-syndrome-becomes-hero-to-the-disabled/2013/08/17/0da21766-062e-11e3-a07f-49ddc7417125_story.html
block quote
Hundreds of people — including those with developmental disabilities
and their family members, advocates and caregivers — listened as Hatch
spoke about the former life that was forced on her and the one she is
now free to pursue.

“I was moved into four different group homes,” she told the crowd
earlier this month. “I didn’t like it. I was treated like a child. My
cellphone was taken away. My computer was taken away.”

“I deserve my rights,” she said. “I am very happy to be home now.”

When she was done, the audience members gave her a standing ovation.
Then they gave her a second one. Then a third. Afterward, strangers
asked for her autograph.

Hatch, who stands no taller than 5 feet and has an IQ of about 50,
didn’t set out to be a champion for people with disabilities. But
after a Virginia judge declared that she has the right to choose how
she lives, Hatch became an immediate symbol of strength among a
population used to being assessed by its weaknesses.

“Fifty years from now, the disability community will be talking about
the Jenny Hatch case,” said Denille Francis, a board member for the
Down Syndrome Association of Hampton Roads. “She really has become a
symbol of hope, and to so many families, she is a hero.”

The association has asked Hatch to be its grand marshal for its annual
awareness walk and 5K run in October. She has also received speaking
invitations from local and out-of-state organizations.

When Hatch delivered the keynote address to the Arc of Virginia state
convention Aug. 8, “Jenny deserved that stage and she commanded it,”
said Hatch’s attorney, Jonathan Martinis, the legal director for the
D.C.-based Quality Trust for Individuals with Disabilities. He called
her case the most significant of his 20-year career and described the
judge’s ruling as a “landmark decision.” He said he hopes other courts
will recognize that people with disabilities can make their own
decisions with support instead of needing a guardian to do it for
them.

“We’re all told you can do anything you want to do if you put your
mind to it,” Martinis said. “Well, people with disabilities have been
told forever that they can’t do things. Jenny said, ‘I can, and I do.’
”

Martinis stepped onstage after Hatch and told the audience: “If you
support Jenny Hatch, if you want to honor Jenny Hatch, then fight like
Jenny Hatch.”

A court battle over control

During a complicated and unusually long guardianship case, Hatch’s
fight came less in the form of charging forward than in remaining
steadfast.

For a year, she was forced to live in a series of group homes as
Newport News Circuit Court Judge David F. Pugh weighed a request from
Hatch’s mother and stepfather to be appointed her guardians. The
couple sought the right to decide, among other things, where Hatch
lived.

[AI] FW: [The vOICe] Beginner's guide to echo location - my form of a book review

Subject: [The vOICe] Beginner's guide to echo location - my form of a book
review

One of the reasons am posting this here is do also make specific mention of
the vOICe - not comparing it as such, but, my sort of take on relevant
similarities, etc. - see page content below:
http://www.blindza.co.za/echo_location.php

Beginner's guide to echo location

For the Blind and Visually Impaired - "Learning to See with Your Ears"

Firstly, this page is related to the following website/eBook:
 http://www.humanecholocation.com/

And, if you want to get an idea of if this might be of interest etc., then
maybe have a look at the following page on that site, where you can download
a free 10-minute audio tutorial/lesson relating to sort of getting started
or understanding the concept of echo location, and the sounds generally made
use of therewith:
 http://www.humanecholocation.com/free-lesson/

If you're not sure what the term "echo location" refers to with regard to
blind/visually impaired people, have a look at the following wikipedia page
on the subject:
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_echolocation

the concept/practice of human echo location for the blind is that which
Daniel Kish calls flash sonar - and mentioning that here since Daniel Kish
has probably had the most media coverage worldwide relating to human echo
location for the blind, etc - if you want more of an idea about his
approach/take on that, try searching for him on youTube.

Anyway, while the eBook is available in various/multiple formats, I read
through it in the ePub format, that Tim provided me with, since that suits
me for reading it on my android phone, etc., and, overall, found it very
informative, and indeed a good start to maybe understanding various forms of
what quite a few blind/visually impaired people are probably already making
use of subconsciously if not consciously - you understand your overall
environment better than you would without various forms of audio feedback
interpretation, even if you're not specifically/consciously listening for
specific elements/aspects of audio feedback, all the time.

This also brings up another small thing, in that since I do wear hearing
aids, due to partial need for them to interpret certain types of sounds
better, and, specifically in that if I am not wearing both of them, I find
it a bit more difficult to actually make use of/perform any form of
directional auditory orientation.

And, yes, know in general hearing aids don't work too well when it comes to
proper forms of directional auditory interpretation, but, one thing noticed
quite early on when I started actually trying to interpret any echo location
feedback consciously was that while the hearing aid's directional feedback
wasn't perfect, it was relatively consistent, in that once I got used to the
relatively small bit of adjustment had to implement, it wasn't really an
issue either.

Another thing mentioned to the author of this book, Tim Johnson, was that
with regards to trying to make use of echo location on a too conscious level
doesn't make sense/work too well for me all the time - my comparison was
that when you're listening to a piece of music, or a nice song, you're not
really listening to each and every note, each little piece of the lyrics,
all the time, but are, in general, listening to/absorbing the whole
combination, and, therefore, yes, when starting out trying to make actual,
conscious use of forms of echo location, while you will want to start off
focusing on specific types of sounds, and the specific bits of feedback they
might/can provide with regard to elements of your then current environment,
etc. - especially when carrying out some of the training/learning exercises
detailed in this book - but, besides that part of it, what worked best for
me was to keep a form of open mind, try to implement the right forms of
feedback sounds dependin
g on environment/situation, and then just let my mind carry out the
interpretation for me, in it's own way.

But, that might also have to do with the fact that I am permanently
visualising shapes, forms, elements and parts of what I call my virtual
vision environment - I am literally seeing somewhat vague
shapes/forms/elements all of the time, although I am a certified, B1, 100%
blind person, and no physically measurable signal gets passed through to my
brain via my optic nerve, etc.

Anyway, I do work with other forms of sensory substitution on an ongoing
basis (have a look at the vOICe-seeingWithSound - see link below), and it
also invokes changes in my field of virtual vision - maybe on a more
concr

As reinstalling has not solved your problem, I suggest you should
restore your computer to an early date when the application was
working fine. If anything goes wrong after restoring, you can undo
 the
 restoration.

Re: [AI] Blind Ph.D.-holder fails to get job

2013-08-20 Thread Rahul Bajaj
What worries me more is the fact that her main reason for fasting is not the
fact that she is not getting a job despite being a Ph.D holder, but the fact
that she's not getting a job despite being disabled.
Doesn't this go to show that visually impaired people just want to be treated
as mere objects of charity and sympathy?

Re: [AI] Blind Ph.D.-holder fails to get job

2013-08-20 Thread Rajesh H Mehta
After reading all the mail trail regarding following topic I was just
thinking how does it co-relate that if person is blind or any other kind
disability has to have a job? Isn’t it job required by all? Also it is
nothing to do with any kind of disability but to do with skill-sets and
more over ability to perform the said task?
My purpose of writing is I have met many people who do do prefer saying
they should get consider because they are having some or the weakness,
however these are only the people who also like to be empathetic”

Re: [AI] Hardware and software requirements for setting up a recording studio - inputs please.

2013-08-20 Thread Amiyo Biswas
First talk to any NGO which has a recording studio. I can give you the idea
of a low-cost studio. This is the model we follow. Set up an AC room for
recording studio. Collect a laptop with at least 1 gb ram and 2 ghz
processor. (New laptops come with much better configuration.) Laptop is
preferable for it takes less space.

For recording books you can purchase the noise-cancelling microphone from
Saksham. It costs abour Rs. 3,300. The recording quality is studio-like. In
addition, it does not catch the noise unless it is too loud. AC room is
recommended for summer days. In winter closed room is enough. You may use
the room in shifts for different readers.

You may also lend the noise-cancelling microphone to readers who have AC and
computer at home.

With best regards,
Amiyo Biswas

studio - inputs please.
